Newcastle disease virus is a significant avian pathogen with the potential to decimate poultry populations all over the world and cause enormous economic losses. Distinct NDV genotypes are currently causing outbreaks worldwide. Due to the high genetic diversity of NDV, virulent strains that may result in a lack of vaccine protection are more likely to emerge and ultimately cause larger epidemics with massive economic losses. Thus, a more comprehensive understanding of the circulating NDV genotypes is critical to reduce Newcastle disease (ND) burden. In this study, NDV strains were isolated and characterized from backyard poultry farms from Tanzania, East Africa …

Objective: This review analyzed the microbiological safety of bushmeat consumed in Africa over the past decades. Methodology:Previous Studies mainly focused on large animals like antelopes and smaller ones like grasscutter. Most microbes studied were similar to those in domestic animal meat, except for rare pathogens such as Salmonella spp, E.coli. Sampling, experiments, and microbe prevalence varied among studies. Results:All studies confirmed the presence of zoonotic pathogens dangerous to human beings. Therefore, more investigations are needed, especially for the chronic and severe cases of pathogens, since only few studies have addressed the bushmeat's microbiological safety in Africa. Conclusion:Efforts should be made to …

Bauhinia rufescens, Ocimum basilicum and Salvadora persica are well known plants used in African traditional medicine, especially in Chadian traditional medicine. They are mostly used in the treatment of infectious diseases, inflammatory diseases, fever, and so on. Studies using various in vitro and in vivo bioassay techniques support the scientific rationale for most of these usages. In this review, ethnobotanical uses, chemistry of natural products, and pharmacological and clinical data for these plants are presented

Bovine trypanosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by protozoans of the genus Trypanosoma . The disease cause economic losses in livestock production. In order to determine the status of research on this disease in Côte d’Ivoire, we used the systematic review method and meta-analysis. Three electronics databases, namely Google Scholar, PubMed and CrossRef were used to search for publications on trypanosomiasis prevalence that met our inclusion criteria. Twenty five articles were identified, 11 of which met the inclusion criteria. Bovine trypanosomiasis prevalence of 2.99% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.96% – 3.01%) to 25.28% (95% CI: 25.17% – 25.38%) were recorded …

Heat stress is an important problem for dairy industry in many parts of the world owing to its adverse effects on productivity and profitability. Heat stress in dairy cattle is caused by an increase in core body temperature, which affects the fat production in the mammary gland. It reduces milk yield, dry matter intake, and alters the milk composition, such as fat, protein, lactose, and solids-not-fats percentages among others. Understanding the biological mechanisms of climatic adaptation, identifying and exploring signatures of selection, genomic diversity and identification of candidate genes for heat tolerance within indicine and taurine dairy breeds is an …

Dairy cattle are highly susceptible to heat stress. Heat stress causes a decline in milk yield, reduced dry matter intake, reduced fertility rates, and alteration of physiological traits (e.g., respiration rate, rectal temperature, heart rates, pulse rates, panting score, sweating rates, and drooling score) and other biomarkers (oxidative heat stress biomarkers and stress response genes). Considering the significant effect of global warming on dairy cattle farming, coupled with the aim to reduce income losses of dairy cattle farmers and improve production under hot environment, there is a need to develop heat tolerant dairy cattle that can grow, reproduce and produce …

Since its discovery, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has emerged as an important technol- ogy for the diagnosis and identification of infectious diseases. It is a highly sensitive and reliable nucleic acids (NA) detection tool for various sample types. However, stool, which carries the most abundant micro-organisms and physiological byproducts, remains to be the trickiest clinical specimen for molecular detection of pathogens. Herein, we demonstrate the novel application of hydrogel mi- croparticles as carriers of viral RNA from stool samples without prior RNA purification for real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). In each microparticle of primer-incorporated network (PIN) as a self-sufficient reaction …

Advances in tau biology and the difficulties of amyloid-directed immunotherapeutics have heightened interest in tau as a target for small molecule drug discovery for neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we evaluated OLX-07010, a small molecule inhibitor of tau self-association, for the prevention of tau aggregation. The primary endpoint of the study was statistically significant reduction of insoluble tau aggregates in treated JNPL3 mice compared with Vehicle-control mice. Secondary endpoints were dose-dependent reduction of insoluble tau aggregates, reduction of phosphorylated tau, and reduction of soluble tau. This study was performed in JNPL3 mice, which are representative of inherited forms of 4-repeat tauopathies with …

Sickness behavior was conceptualized initially as the behavioral counterpart of the fever response to infectious pathogens. It helps to raise body temperature to its higher setpoint and to maintain it at this new level and it has the additional benefit of enabling a weakened organism to protect itself from other dangers. The discovery of the behavioral effects of proinflammatory cytokines produced by activated immune cells provided a cellular and molecular basis to this phenomenon. The administration of cytokines or cytokine inducers like lipopolysaccharide to healthy rodents allowed to reveal the similarities and differences between inflammation-induced sickness behavior and the fever …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Scale drop disease virus (SDDV) is a significant pathogen affecting Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) in Southeast Asia, causing scale drop syndrome (SDS) and resulting in high mortality and substantial economic losses in aquaculture. Recently, SDDV has been reported in Asian sea bass farms throughout the Asia-Pacific region including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and China. This study employed metagenomic methods to analyze bacterial and viral communities in infected fish tissues from Southeast Asia, leading to the recovery and characterization of the complete genome of SDDV strain TH7_2019. The genome, comprising 131 kb with 134 putative ORFs, showed high amino acid …
Characterization Of Antimicrobial Resistance And Virulence Factors In Multidrug-Resistant Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia Coli Isolated From Canine Urinary Tract, Reproductive Tract And Bloodstream Infections, Parinya Sroithongkham
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Despite extensive characterization of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) causing urinary tract infections (UTIs), the genetic background of non-urinary extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) in dogs, such as those causing canine pyometra, prostatic abscesses (PAs), and bloodstream infections (BSIs), remains inadequately understood. This study characterized the virulence determinants of 101 E. coli isolates from canine pyometra (n=61), PAs (n=38), and BSIs (n=2). The analysis revealed a stronger association of pyometra strains with UPEC compared to PA strains. Forty-one isolates were resistant to third-generation cephalosporins and/or fluoroquinolones, with 14 being extended-spectrum β-lactamase producers and carrying blaCTX-M. Whole-genome sequencing was performed on 10 …

Novel Vaccination Strategy Against Vibrio Harveyi Infection In Asian Seabass (Lates Calcarifer) Using A Chitosan – Oxygen Nanobubble - Vaccine Complex, Nguyen Giang Thu Lan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Vibriosis is a bacterial disease caused by Vibrio harveyi (V. harveyi; Vh ) that poses a substantial threat to Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) aquaculture. In this study, we investigated alternative approaches to conventional injection vaccination for prevention of V. harveyi in Asian seabass. The first approach involved an immersion prime with heat-inactivated V. harveyi vaccine, followed by two oral booster doses (day 14-18 and day 28-32). Immunized fish demonstrated higher expression levels of immune genes (i.e. TNFα, IL1β, CD4, CD8, and IgM) following the immersion prime and the first oral booster dose, peaking at 14 and 28 days post vaccination …

Modal Shift From The Metro Rail Transit (Mrt) To The Bus Rapid Transit (Brt) Along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue, Metro Manila, Rommar Jaie Reyes
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Traffic congestion in Metro Manila, particularly along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), is a long-standing issue. Hundreds of thousands of commuters travel along EDSA daily, utilizing major transit systems such as the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Line 3 and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Route 1, which run parallel to each other. Despite the BRT operating for more than four years since the Covid-19 pandemic, few studies have examined its effects on the MRT, particularly concerning commuter demographics. This research fills this gap by examining the shift from MRT to BRT along EDSA, comparing user demographics, and identifying factors …

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a highly contagious virus known to cause severe respiratory illnesses, poses a significant health threat, particularly impacting vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. It is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections, often resulting in serious complications like pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Despite its substantial impact, there is currently only an approved RSV vaccine specifically designed for the elderly, emphasizing the urgency of continued research in this area for developing broader coverage of the population. The plant expression platform for producing therapeutic proteins offers a cost-effective and scalable solution, presenting a …
Development Of A Pseudotype-Based Neutralization Test For Sars-Cov-2 Antibody Measurement, Kunlanan Charsangbong
Development Of A Pseudotype-Based Neutralization Test For Sars-Cov-2 Antibody Measurement, Kunlanan Charsangbong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The gold standard for measuring anti-SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody is a live-virus neutralization test (VNT). However, VNT is rather complex and must be performed in a biosafety level 3 facility. Therefore, a gene-encoding spike protein of the original SARS-CoV-2 variant was designed to develop a lentivirus-based SARS-CoV-2 pseudotype in this study to replace the live virus, which can be conducted in a biosafety level 2 facility. The 2nd generation lentiviral pseudotype with green fluorescent protein (GFP) and the 3rd generation lentiviral pseudotype with luciferase as a reporter system, respectively, provided a sufficient titer (TCID50/mL) for a neutralization test. However, the 3rd …
