Background
Treatment adherence is a vital aspect in the management of chronic diseases like leprosy; however, most studies on treatment adherence focus on patients. This study aims to examine the perceptions of healthcare providers on factors that can promote or prevent patients from adhering to treatment.
Methods
We conducted three focus group discussions (FGDs) with healthcare providers who have at least one year experience in managing leprosy in three large leprosy case-holding hospitals in Metro Manila, Philippines. We audio-recorded, transcribed, translated the FGD proceedings, and analyzed the transcripts thematically to identify patient-intrinsic and patient-extrinsic enablers and barriers to treatment adherence …

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the significance of wastewater surveillance in monitoring and tracking the spread of infectious diseases, including SARS-CoV-2. The wastewater surveillance approach detects genetic fragments from viruses in wastewater, which could provide an early warning of outbreaks in communities. In this study, we determined the concentrations of four types of endogenous viruses, including non-enveloped DNA (crAssphage and human adenovirus 40/41), non-enveloped RNA (enterovirus), and enveloped RNA (SARS-CoV-2) viruses, from wastewater samples using the adsorption-extraction (AE) method with electronegative HA membranes of different pore sizes (0.22, 0.45, and 0.80 µm). Our findings showed that the membrane with …

Objective: To collect qualitative data on approaches that can potentially reduce barriers to, and create strategies for, increasing SARS-CoV-2 testing uptake in underserved Black communities in Louisiana. Methods: A series of eight focus groups, including 41 participants, were conducted in primarily Black communities. The Nominal Group Technique (NGT) was used to determine perceptions of COVID-19 as a disease, access to testing, and barriers limiting testing uptake. Results: Common barriers to SARS-CoV-2 testing were identified as lack of transportation, misinformation/lack of information, lack of time/long wait times, fear of the test being uncomfortable and/or testing positive, the cost of testing, and …

Gradenigo's Syndrome And Vernet Syndrome As Presenting Signs Of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, Ciji Robinson, Diva Maraj, Jasdeep S. Minhas, Mehakmeet Bhatia, Vivek Kak
Infectious Diseases Articles
Both Gradenigo's syndrome and Vernet syndrome are rare pathologies of the intracranial space; both involve compression of a particular anatomic location in the skull, thus affecting structures nearby or within that space. A patient presenting with one or both of these syndromes should raise concern for malignancy, head trauma, or an intracranial infection. We present a case of a 39-year-old female with three weeks of left-sided ear, face, and neck pain along with difficulty swallowing and reduced vision in the left eye. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed fullness in the left nasopharyngeal region, raising concern for malignancy or …

The Hipaa Privacy Rule At Age 25: Privacy For Equitable Ai, Barbara J. Evans
UF Law Faculty Publications
This Article argues that unconsented access to data is not ethically problematic in and of itself. What has made it problematic is the weak framework of alternative protections that the Privacy Rule prescribes when data are used without individual consent. This Article proposes specific measures to strengthen those protections so that the pursuit of greater health care equity need not imply a loss of meaningful privacy standards.
Part I describes two competing visions of how to protect data privacy, examining the roots of ongoing discontent with the Privacy Rule and tracing policymakers’ original rationale for fashioning a major federal privacy …

Implementation Of Daily Multidisciplinary Rounding Audits Of Adherence To An Indwelling Catheter Protocol Impact On Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Jacqueline April Wright
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) among critical care patients negatively impact the trajectory of the patient’s hospitalization through increased mortality, morbidity, length of stay, and cost. To combat this, hospitals have implemented bundles in compliance with evidence-based practice models to reduce CAUTIs. Purpose: Determine if implementing a daily multidisciplinary rounding audit of established CAUTI prevention protocol decreases the occurrence of CAUTIs in critical care patients with indwelling urinary catheters. Methods: Participants in this quality improvement project included critical care nurses and providers participating in daily multidisciplinary rounds on all critical care patients with indwelling urinary catheters admitted to …

Caesar’S Gambit: Coherence, Justification Of Legal Rules, And The Duty Test: Towards An Interactional Theory Of Government Liability For Negligence In Disaster Management, Irehobhude O. Iyioha
Dalhousie Law Journal
This article examines barriers posed by the duty of care test for government liability for negligence in disaster management. It argues that various aspects of the test raise concerns about coherence, legitimacy of judicial decision-making, and ultimately how we justify liability in tort law. In examining the coherence of the duty test through multiple prisms, including through theoretical justifications for tort principles, this article contends that the duty test, in its framing and interpretations, fails to meet the formal and substantive demands of coherence, correctness and legitimacy. Arguing that justificatory theories offer necessary theoretical lenses through which to understand, critique, …

Immobilization using external or internal splints is a standard and effective procedure to treat minor skeletal fractures. In the case of major skeletal defects caused by extreme trauma, infectious diseases or tumors, the surgical implantation of a bone graft from external sources is required for a complete cure. Practical disadvantages, such as the risk of immune rejection and infection at the implant site, are high in xenografts and allografts. Currently, an autograft from the iliac crest of a patient is considered the “gold standard” method for treating large-scale skeletal defects. However, this method is not an ideal solution due to …

A Peculiar Case Of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever: A Case Report Of Radical Outcomes: A Case Study, Neelam Ubaid-Ur-Raheem
Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)
Dengue is the arthropod-borne flavivirus infection, its severity increases during pregnancy, and results in worst maternofetal outcomes, which is an alarming issue. Dengue fever (DF) is the most common cause for preterm delivery and abortion. Dengue-related thrombocytopenia increases the risk of bleeding during pregnancy and delivery and can also leads to high maternal mortality rates. Globally 3.9 billion people are at risk of dengue fever, especially in Asia.
This case study focuses on a 22-years old pregnant woman from Pakistan without known co-morbidities. She presented in an emergency department with high fever, nausea, vomiting, and bleeding gum. She was positive …
Improving Influenza Vaccination Rates In A Primary Care Clinic: A Quality Improvement Crusade, Janet Lowe
Improving Influenza Vaccination Rates In A Primary Care Clinic: A Quality Improvement Crusade, Janet Lowe
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Research consistently shows that influenza vaccines prevent medical appointments, treatments, and disabilities. In the United States (U.S.), 25-49 million individuals contracted influenza from October 2022 through January 2023. However, despite a greater community consciousness regarding viral contagions and the improved availability of vaccinations through primary care settings, ambulatory clinics, and local pharmacies, adults in the U.S. continue to miss the national influenza vaccination goals of 70%.
Purpose: This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aimed to boost influenza immunization rates and comprehension of vaccination benefits among patients in a primary care setting during the influenza season. The DNP student …
Improving Early Sepsis Recognition And Treatment By Utilizing The Surviving Sepsis Campaign In Emergency Department Patients, Rebecca Smith
Improving Early Sepsis Recognition And Treatment By Utilizing The Surviving Sepsis Campaign In Emergency Department Patients, Rebecca Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Sepsis is a physical reaction to infection that can cause bodily injury, organ deterioration, and death (Sepsis Alliance, 2022). Early sepsis identification and intervention requires staff engagement in quick recognition and implementation of care (Jorgensen, 2019). Septic patients require prompt initiation of intravenous fluids, hemodynamic observation, and appropriate laboratory testing (Evans & Rhodes, 2021). Rapid detection of sepsis can prevent patients from progressing to severe sepsis and septic shock, increasing the risk of mortality (Jorgensen, 2019). As a result of the high mortality rates and complications associated with this health disparity, evidenced-based care bundles were developed to improve care …
Utilizing The Cdc T-Dap Educational Material To Increase Parental Consent Of T-Dap Vaccination Rates Among Children 11-14 Years, Anita Pates
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background:The T-dap vaccine is vital to combating vaccine-preventable diseases. "T-dap vaccine can prevent tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis" (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). Therefore, providers must identify and educate parents whose child is unvaccinated with the T-dap vaccine. "If an increase in unvaccinated children continues to rise, there is risk for a resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases and potential increase in deaths related to these infectious diseases" (Bowling, 2018, p. 128).
Purpose: The purpose of this DNP project was to implement an educational session targeting parents of children aged 11-14 in a pediatric clinic in an urban area …
Overuse Of Broad-Spectrum Antibiotics In The Acute Care Setting, Adaline Morris
Overuse Of Broad-Spectrum Antibiotics In The Acute Care Setting, Adaline Morris
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: The identified problem discussed for the DNP project is antimicrobial resistance in acute care settings associated with the overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Antibiotics are often started before obtaining cultures, thus skewing the results. The overuse of antibiotics can lead to almost complete resistance. In a study reviewed by Olesen, et al., performed in 2011, 34% of people received an antibiotic, and 10% of people received 57% of all antibiotic prescriptions (Olesen, et al., 2018). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), for example, a 92% resistance rate prescribing Ciprofloxacin for urinary tract infections with an E.Coli bacteria. (World Health …

Laboratory Management Models In Core Facilities, Karmen Michael Owen
Laboratory Management Models In Core Facilities, Karmen Michael Owen
Theses and Dissertations
Core biotechnology facilities are often defined as laboratories that house shared resources for research. These laboratories are of great importance to research communities because a large portion of scientific research data is generated at these facilities. Different investigators can use core facilities to help further their research. In a university setting, there are several management strategies from small cores that house a specific type of instrument, to large cores that house many different technologies. Funding strategies also differ significantly, from those that are funded by a small group of well-funded investigators, to cores managed by a specific department or school, …

Brain and Mind Institute
Background and objectives: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are taking a toll on Africa’s youth at younger ages than in other regions. These are attributed to risk factors that usually advance in adolescence, such as unhealthy diets and reduced physical activity. Young adults in South Africa, particularly women, tend to be sedentary, consume energy-dense diets low in micronutrients, and are more likely to develop NCDs much earlier in life than those in high-income countries. With an intersectionality perspective, this study explored young adults’ barriers and solutions to addressing these risk factors in Soweto.
Setting: Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa, is one …
