Electrospun Ethyl Cellulose Nanofibers With Phase Change Materials: Designing Temperature-Responsive Drug Delivery Systems, Michael Wildy
Electrospun Ethyl Cellulose Nanofibers With Phase Change Materials: Designing Temperature-Responsive Drug Delivery Systems, Michael Wildy
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, ethyl cellulose (EC) nanofibers loaded with either Rhodamine B (RhB) or Doxorubicin HCl (DOX) and phase change materials (PCM) were fabricated by blend electrospinning. EC is a cellulose derivative widely used as an excipient in the pharmaceutical industry and an ideal polymer for controlled drug release. Lauric acid (LA) and stearic acid (SA) were used as a material with a melting point close to physiological body temperature. Good drug-polymer compatibility and an amorphous distribution of drugs were shown by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. The release rate of RhB was shown to …
The Implications Of Ferroptosis In Antibiotic Resistance, Marysol Hohl
The Implications Of Ferroptosis In Antibiotic Resistance, Marysol Hohl
Senior Honors Theses
Bacterial infections in the United States are becoming increasingly resistant to existing antibiotic treatments. Due to projected increases in resistance and the recent decrease in novel antibacterials, experts have determined that the United States is in the “post-antibiotic era.” The scientific community has failed to resolve resistance despite the continual discovery of new antibiotic compounds. In the past decade, a novel form of cell death called ferroptosis has been implicated in antibiotic treatment by employing the use of nanotechnology. This literature review will describe the problem of bacterial resistance and demonstrate how current research is pioneering a new age of …

Background
In industrialized populations, low male testosterone is associated with higher rates of cardiovascular mortality. However, coronary risk factors like obesity impact both testosterone and cardiovascular outcomes. Here, we assess the role of endogenous testosterone on coronary artery calcium in an active subsistence population with relatively low testosterone levels, low cardiovascular risk and low coronary artery calcium scores.
Methodology
In this cross-sectional community-based study, 719 Tsimane forager-horticulturalists in the Bolivian Amazon aged 40+ years underwent computed tomography (49.8% male, mean age 57.6 years).
Results
Coronary artery calcium levels were low; 84.5% had no coronary artery calcium. Zero-inflated negative binomial models …

When measuring physiological data, the central limit theorem typically implies a consistent variance, resulting in data that closely follow a Gaussian distribution. However, physiological measurements often deviate from this expectation, increasing variance due to nonlinear correlations across various scales. The challenge lies in testing these tails, which comprise only rare and extreme values. We introduce multiscale probability density function (PDF) analysis, a method that estimates this non-Gaussianity parameter for physiological fluctuations in each of multiple timescales. We gain valuable insights into the observed distributions with heavier tails and nonlinear correlations by exploring the relationship between non-Gaussianity and logarithmic scale. To …

Bilateral Differences In Vascular Stiffness And Blood Pressure Of Female College Tennis Players And Controls, Chanhtel E. Thongphok, Abena O. Gyampo, Anneli O. Ramolins, Elianna G. Hills, Claire E. Coates, Stephen J. Ives
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Vascular stiffness is highly correlated to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and has been attenuated by regular aerobic exercise in older adults. Additionally, body composition strongly predicts vascular stiffness and CVD risk. Previous research has documented that bilateral differences in shear stress lead to differences in vascular endothelial function in tennis players. However, whether this translates into bilateral differences in vascular stiffness and blood pressure remains to be elucidated. The SphygmoCor is a gold standard for assessing arterial stiffness but is not readily accessible. In comparison, the TicWatch GTH Pro, which uses the SphygmoCor algorithm to provide a cardiovascular health (CVH) score …

Effects Of Aging On Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption: A Preliminary Study, Steven Klepacz
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Aging and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) is something that has not been adequately studied. Studies looking at EPOC mostly are compiled of young college age individuals. Aging in humans is a topic of much research with still more to be learned. The study in this paper attempts to answer the question of whether age affects EPOC when performing a certain exercise. Preliminary findings based on general age-related research suggest the possibility. This thesis will explore the current research related to age and EPOC, analyze the findings, and discuss additional avenues for future research.

Deweyan “Soul” As Conceived In His Early Work, Becky L. Noël Smith, Randy Hewitt
Deweyan “Soul” As Conceived In His Early Work, Becky L. Noël Smith, Randy Hewitt
Education and Culture
The term “soul” is found throughout John Dewey’s work, particularly when discussing self-realization and meaningfulness. Soul can be easily associated with religious connotations, and yet it is well accepted that he did not imply such. So, then, what did he mean? In his early writings, he shifted away from theologically inspired language and toward a conception composed in naturalized terms. This, no doubt, can be confusing to uninitiated readers. While extensive analyses have been written on his philosophy of spirit and metaphysics, they can leave one wondering: what is a conception of soul that is consistent with Dewey’s philosophy of …

The precise control over small volumes of liquids is of great interest to various fields such as biotechnology, drug development, and diagnostics. Working at small scales reduces cost, time, and waste, which is why microfluidic lab-on-chip technologies have become popular in a wide range of industries and applications. Additionally, there are differences in properties such as mass transport and heat dissipation at the micron scale compared to in bulk. Microfluidic devices contain several interfaces to consider when preparing to fabricate devices. The substrate/device, substrate/solution, and solution/device interfaces are all of importance and must carefully be tuned depending on the desired …
Development Of An Angiogenic Tissue-On-A-Chip Microenvironment, Eric Stuehr
Development Of An Angiogenic Tissue-On-A-Chip Microenvironment, Eric Stuehr
Master's Theses
Preclinical testing is necessary to investigate the safety and efficacy of novel therapeutics before moving to clinical trials, yet approximately 90% of these therapies fail once tested in humans. This has led to increased interest in developing robust preclinical models that accurately mimic the complex human in vivo physiology. Microfluidic devices that can introduce dynamic conditions to 3D cell/organoid cultures, also known as tissue-on-a-chip, have emerged as physiologically relevant in vitro preclinical models that can achieve high throughput screening of therapeutics. The research presented here aimed to develop an angiogenic environment within a novel microfluidic device to stimulate formation of …
The Federal Circuit’S Experimental Prism, Jeremy W. Bock
The Federal Circuit’S Experimental Prism, Jeremy W. Bock
Fordham Law Review
Whether the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is succeeding in its role as the steward of decisional patent law has been the subject of considerable debate and many empirical studies for the past forty years. Based on these studies, some observers have expressed skepticism of the utility of that court’s exclusive, nationwide jurisdiction over patent appeals. But the substantial body of empirical literature on the Federal Circuit has been viewed largely from a single vantage point, one that attributes any negative or undesirable outcomes to the court’s specialization. This Article argues that there is another way to …

Urban Versus Lake Impacts On Heat Stress And Its Disparities In A Shoreline City, T. C. Chakraborty, Jiali Wang, Yun Qian, William Pringle, Zhao Yang, Pengfei Xue
Michigan Tech Publications
Shoreline cities are influenced by both urban-scale processes and land-water interactions, with consequences on heat exposure and its disparities. Heat exposure studies over these cities have focused on air and skin temperature, even though moisture advection from water bodies can also modulate heat stress. Here, using an ensemble of model simulations covering Chicago, we find that Lake Michigan strongly reduces heat exposure (2.75°C reduction in maximum average air temperature in Chicago) and heat stress (maximum average wet bulb globe temperature reduced by 0.86°C) during the day, while urbanization enhances them at night (2.75 and 1.57°C increases in minimum average air …

Background:
Helios (encoded by IKZF2), a member of the Ikaros family of transcription factors, is a zinc finger protein involved in embryogenesis and immune function. Although predominantly recognized for its role in the development and function of T lymphocytes, particularly the CD4+ regulatory T cells (Tregs), the expression and function of Helios extends beyond the immune system. During embryogenesis, Helios is expressed in a wide range of tissues, making genetic variants that disrupt the function of Helios strong candidates for causing widespread immune-related and developmental abnormalities in humans.

The Acute Impacts Of Resistance Training Performed With And Without Blood Flow Restriction On Lower Body Muscular Power, Justin Faller, Brian Thompson, Stephen Ives
The Acute Impacts Of Resistance Training Performed With And Without Blood Flow Restriction On Lower Body Muscular Power, Justin Faller, Brian Thompson, Stephen Ives
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 16(6): 1320-1333, 2023. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends resistance training using at least 70% one repetition maximum to improve muscular strength and hypertrophy; however, these intensities may not be safe for all populations. A training technique that has been reported to elicit increases in strength and muscle size uses low intensity resistance training or low load training in combination with blood flow restriction (BFR) to the working muscle. Although the acute effects of BFR on muscle strength and size are well established, the effects of BFR on muscular power are not definitively known. …

Knowledge Integration In Domain-Informed Machine Learning And Multi-Scale Modeling Of Nonlinear Dynamics In Complex Systems, Phat K. Huynh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nonlinear dynamical systems have been extensively used to model various phenomena in the changing world around us, especially in science and engineering fields. Thanks to breakthrough advancements in sensing technologies, an increasingly high volume of multi-modal sensor data has been collected, which enables us gain better insights into complex systems dynamics and build sophisticated data-driven machine-learning-based dynamic models without having the access to the underlying governing equations. However, integrating domain-specific knowledge in machine learning algorithms remains pivotal for various reasons: it promises enhanced predictive accuracy, better model interpretability, and increased generalizability. This dissertation delves into three core research questions, each …

Tolkien Dogmatics: Theology Through Mythology With The Maker Of Middle-Earth By Austin M. Freeman, Alex (Oleksiy) Ostaltsev
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
The powerful and highly informative definitions that Freeman applies to Tolkien’s Middle-earth phenomenon in the title of his book create a productive interpretational framework. Myth and mythology in Inklings’ writing were always understood, in an almost Jungian way, as a cultural paradigm flexible enough to embrace the free creativity of the playful human mind and a philosophical postulate, or credo, of the humanistic religious intuition of Christianity. In Freeman’s interpretation, Tolkien’s literary myth in some ways requires a theological background, which, in its turn, leads to inevitable dogma, a statement that reveals the sensitive mechanics of literary myth as it …

Salsolinol (1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-6,7-diol) is a close structural analogue of dopamine with an asymmetric center at the C1 position, and its presence in vivo, both in humans and rodents, has already been proven. Yet, given the fact that salsolinol colocalizes with dopamine-rich regions and was first detected in the urine of Parkinson's disease patients, its direct role in the process of neurodegeneration has been proposed. Here, we report that

Nearly all undergraduate biology courses rely on quizzes and exams. Despite their prevalence, very little work has been done to explore how the framing of assessment questions may influence student performance and affect. Here, we conduct a quasi-random experimental study where students in different sections of the same course were given isomorphic questions that varied in their framing of experimental scenarios. One section was provided a description using the self-referential term “you”, placing the student in the experiment; another section received the same scenario that used classmate names; while a third section's scenario integrated counterstereotypical scientist names. Our results demonstrate …
