Digitizing The Cultural Capital: Harnessing Digital Humanities For Heritage Preservation In Bujumbura, Burundi, James Hutson, Pace Ellsworth, Matt Ellsworth, Jean Bosco Ntungirimana
Faculty Scholarship
In an era where the erosion of cultural heritage is increasingly prevalent, there exists a critical imperative to explore and implement innovative methods for the preservation and revitalization of cultural identities, as exemplified by the urgent situation in Bujumbura, Burundi. Central to this study is the exploration of innovative digital methodologies for archiving a wide spectrum of cultural artifacts, including both notable and everyday heritage elements, in Bujumbura. Traditional approaches to biographical and historical profiling have predominantly focused on official records and significant events, often neglecting the richness of personal experiences and everyday interactions that substantially shape cultural identities. To …

Ex Post Facto Study Of The Effect Of Generational Cohort And Employment Tenure On Employee Satisfaction Of United States Federal Employees, Justin Lee Reed
Ex Post Facto Study Of The Effect Of Generational Cohort And Employment Tenure On Employee Satisfaction Of United States Federal Employees, Justin Lee Reed
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Generational differences and the socialization process within the workplace are often seen as opposing theoretical approaches when attempting to explain or understand employee satisfaction. Generational cohort theory asserts that the perceptions and outlooks developed during an individual’s formative years are based on historical events and location, which become instrumental in how they see and interact with the world around them. Social identity theory asserts that exposure and inclusion into a group or organization creates acceptance for the individual and this assists in structuring their outlook. The purpose of this quantitative ex post facto study was to determine if and to …

Some Are More Equal Than Others: U.S. Supreme Court Clerkships, Tracey E. George, G. Mitu Gulati, Albert H. Yoon
Some Are More Equal Than Others: U.S. Supreme Court Clerkships, Tracey E. George, G. Mitu Gulati, Albert H. Yoon
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The most elite and scarce of all U.S. legal credentials is serving as a Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. A close second is clerking for a Justice. A Court clerkship is a prize as well as a ticket to future success. Rich accounts of the experience fill bookshelves and journal pages. Yet the public lacks a clear story about who wins this clerkship lottery. Original analysis of forty years of clerkships tells that story. New datasets detail clerks’ paths from college to the Court to careers. Research shows that Court clerkships favor educational pedigree and status over pure achievement. …
Exemplary Centre And "Terra Incognita"; Excursions, Diplomacy, And Appropriation Of Colonial Knowledge In Belu, Timor, Hans Hägerdal
Exemplary Centre And "Terra Incognita"; Excursions, Diplomacy, And Appropriation Of Colonial Knowledge In Belu, Timor, Hans Hägerdal
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The article analyses early European knowledge about Belu, a historical region in Central Timor which, although “belonging” mostly to the Dutch colonial sphere, still had a position of cultural-ritual centrality on a Timor-wide level. Before the mid-nineteenth century, the region was, from a Dutch point of view, largely unknown in terms of political hierarchies, social structure, and economic opportunities. However, three officially commissioned authors, A.G. Brouwer, W.L. Rogge, and H.J. Grijzen, wrote extensive reports about Belu in 1849, 1865, and 1904, in which they attempted to understand local society and the opportunities they offered the colonial state. The article explores …
A Case Study In The Ethics Of Queer Oral History, Mackenzie Harrison
A Case Study In The Ethics Of Queer Oral History, Mackenzie Harrison
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
During work on a queer archival project at a small liberal arts university, tension arose when an oral history participant unintentionally misnamed and misgendered a transgender individual. As this case study demonstrates, the project team had to balance the ethics of oral history, which discourage the editing of recordings, with queer ethics that view this type of misnaming as actively harmful. The team created their own solution, taking into account general guidance regarding third-party naming, trans-inclusivity in archives, and the overall goals of the project.
Traces Of An Imperial Japanese Imaginary: Positioning The Japanese & Okinawan Settlements Of Southern Alberta, Canada, 1910s-1930s, D Aoki
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This article develops a case study of two settlements of Japanese colonists—one ethnically Japanese, and one Okinawan—in the southern region of the Canadian province of Alberta between the 1910s and 1930s. It explores these communities’ aims and institutional structures to propose that these shaped membership in the trans-Pacific imperial Japanese imaginary, one that—in the navigation of dual Japanese and British Dominion imperial loyalties—sought to promote Japanese racial progress and cultivate the Japanese identity of future generations. It adds to scholarship on imperial Japan’s projection into North America through its diaspora. Highlighting southern Alberta’s Japanese communities, a distinctive opportunity is opened …
"Lifting As We Climb": A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Speeches Of Hallie Quinn Brown, Natonya Listach
"Lifting As We Climb": A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Speeches Of Hallie Quinn Brown, Natonya Listach
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The accomplishments of Hallie Quinn Brown can be separated into segments of her teaching career, her experiences as a public speaker and elocutionist, and her work as an activist. She successfully educated various students, spoke before dignitaries, and moved her audiences to tears on multiple occasions. She fought for civil and women’s rights until her death at 100. Yet, while her membership and participation in specific organizations are not disputed, her importance, significance, and impact on African American rhetoric are relatively ignored. This dissertation analyzes Brown’s speeches and (re)introduces Brown to the study of rhetoric. By examining Brown’s speeches through …
Out Of The Mouths Of Babes: Children And The Formation Of The Rio De La Plata Spanish Address System, Israel Sanz-Sánchez, María Irene Moyna
Out Of The Mouths Of Babes: Children And The Formation Of The Rio De La Plata Spanish Address System, Israel Sanz-Sánchez, María Irene Moyna
Languages & Cultures Faculty Publications
This paper analyzes the effects of child language acquisition as a critical factor in a morphological change, namely, the replacement of the etymologically singular second person paradigm (tuteo) by its plural counterpart (voseo) in 19th century Rio de la Plata Spanish. The account applies a sociohistorical model which proposes that young children can function as language change agents in environments characterized by unpredictable input variation, lack of normative mechanisms, and the emergence of peer networks among young learners. The model is then applied to explain the rapid generalization of voseo in the late 1800s, a well-documented but poorly understood process. …

The Fantasy Of National Rice Barn And Reality Of Farmers In Indramayu, Rhino Ariefiansyah, Rivaldo Herman
The Fantasy Of National Rice Barn And Reality Of Farmers In Indramayu, Rhino Ariefiansyah, Rivaldo Herman
Antropologi Indonesia
This paper centers on Indramayu's designation as the "national rice barn" (Daerah Lumbung Padi Nasional). Contrary to the believed narrative, our findings show that Indramayu’s agricultural dreams have been subsidized by other income generating activities, particularly from migrant remittance. We argue that the extensive environmental degradation and ecological vulnerabilities experienced in Indramayu have compelled small-scale farmers to pursue opportunities as migrant workers to sustain and expand their agricultural endeavors. Considering the inherent risk of fraud, robbery, blackmailing, human trafficking, physical and mental torture experienced by migrant workers, we suggest this agrarian imagination as "cruel optimism" that Indramayu farmers endure while …
Paul And Economics: A Theology Of The Gospel And Economics, Brent Allen Myers
Paul And Economics: A Theology Of The Gospel And Economics, Brent Allen Myers
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
An often overlooked biblical theology that the Apostle Paul addresses is economics. Economics impacts every area of an individual's life and even more so in the ancient world. Paul's chief concern is with the gospel of Jesus and one of the chief components of a believer's new life in Christ is how they handle their own economic situation. This work seeks to analyze the writings of Paul and explore his comments on the economic realities of individuals based on God's authority.
A Research Into The Influence Of Jewish Priests, Scribes, And Canonical And Non-Canonical Jewish Apocalyptic Literature On M Materials, Rajesh Sebastian
A Research Into The Influence Of Jewish Priests, Scribes, And Canonical And Non-Canonical Jewish Apocalyptic Literature On M Materials, Rajesh Sebastian
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
M materials refer to any content in Matthew that is not found in Mark and Luke and hence considered to be not part of the hypothetical Q. Questions are raised regarding the source and historical reliability of M materials. Many scholars consider M narratives to be fictional. Research work has been lacking among Matthean scholars to identify a source for M narratives. The primary goal of this research is to identify the Jewish priests as a plausible source of some M narratives. The research also attempts to unravel the reason for the Jewish apocalyptic influence on M materials and argues …
The Faithful Vassal: The Suzerain-Vassal Covenant Relationship As A Biblical-Theological Theme Connecting The Old And New Testament Narratives, Tyler Matthew Brown
The Faithful Vassal: The Suzerain-Vassal Covenant Relationship As A Biblical-Theological Theme Connecting The Old And New Testament Narratives, Tyler Matthew Brown
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Much has been written within the scholarly literature regarding the nature of the Mosaic Law as being one which reflects a suzerain-vassal covenant between Yahweh and the nation of Israel in the Old Testament, and particularly in the book of Deuteronomy. Likewise, it has been well established by scholars that this covenant relationship serves as a key biblical-theological theme within the narrative of the former prophets, the so-called “Deuteronomistic history.” At the same time, however, there have been relatively few attempts to examine the ways in which this critical theme features throughout the remainder of the biblical narratives, from the …
Playing With Time: Writing History In Neo-Zionist Hebrew Literature, Huiruo Li
Playing With Time: Writing History In Neo-Zionist Hebrew Literature, Huiruo Li
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The term neo-Zionism can be used to group ideologically much of contemporary Hebrew literature. However, since neo-Zionism shares similar critical tools with post-Zionism, while also sharing a common political vision with Zionism, it has been difficult to find the definitive signifiers of neo-Zionist writing. This paper offers a way to determine the nuanced ideological inclination of Hebrew literature: the presentation of time. First, this paper recognizes the metamorphosis of time in Israeli literary history that reflects the writers’ historical view of the Zionist agenda. Zionist Hebrew literature was engaged in re-establishing Jewish historical time by emphasizing the relationship between time …

Collaborating With An Amazonian Tree: A Bio-Product Design Experiment With Ancestral References, Andrea Bandoni, Raul Cunca, Carla Paoliello, Gabriela Forman
IASDR Conference Series
In this article, we describe and discuss the findings from a design study aimed at producing objects with an Amazonian tree by employing a design technique based on collaboration with living organisms, adopting approaches to design that prioritizes respect for the environment, as well as shedding light on the potential of ancestral knowledge in shaping sustainable design practices. The Crescentia cujete species produces cuias, fruits that turn into domestic objects through an ancestral artisanal process that can be considered highly ecological from a design perspective. The study starts with a literature review in Biodesign, Biology, and Anthropology. Then, a mixed …

This study aims to shed light on the role of the Islamic Waqf in the equitable distribution of wealth in Jordan between 2015 and 2020. It is the role of the Ministry of Awqaaf and Islamic Affairs as the official government body responsible for the Islamic Waqf in Jordan whose endowment funds directed to mosques, health, education, needy and public sector. The results showed that a disproportionate percentage of spending was directed to the mosques, and the need for the Islamic Waqf to allocate the funds raised from the rich people to support the poor people, and vulnerable population as …

The Sugar War : The Response Of Guangdong Brown Sugar To The Provincial Industrial Sugar System, 1933-1936, Yiqun Mao
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Thanks to the tariff imposition in the 1930s, Guangdong’s brown sugar trade, once shrinking due to the dumping of refined sugar, revived with soaring annual sales from hundreds of thousands to 1.3 million piculs. Meanwhile, Chen Jitang’s warlord regime in Guangdong established several provincial sugar factories and implemented a sugar monopoly policy from 1933 until its reign in 1936. Faced with the threats posed by refined sugar and the official disruption of the brown sugar system, Guangdong’s brown sugar maintained its prosperity with increasing output. Current sugar history studies mainly focused on how worldwide colonial regimes successfully built industrialized sugar …
