The Third Horseman: Preventability Versus Apocalypse In The Great Famine Of 1315 And The Irish Potato Famine, Luke Ziegler
The Third Horseman: Preventability Versus Apocalypse In The Great Famine Of 1315 And The Irish Potato Famine, Luke Ziegler
Honors Theses
Famine is a huge problem for societies, even in the modern world. Throughout history, famine has reared its ugly head and brought about demographic and societal collapse. The Great Famine of 1315 Famine and the Irish Potato Famine, despite their differences, had similar underlying factors of land management and overpopulation paired with an environmental catalyst, and also show that governmental response has the potential to both cause and prevent a famine, but only if the scale of the problem is limited. They both examine the question of national identity and create a multitude of debates in later historiography. Although these …

Hantu Laut: The Ghosts Of Colonialism In Indonesia’S Marine Conservation, Nara Wisesa
Graduate Student Scholarship
In this paper, I investigate the enduring influence of Dutch colonial legacies on contemporary marine conservation governance in the Indonesian archipelago. Using Banu Subramaniam’s concept of interdisciplinary haunting and Bruno Latour’s Black Box metaphor, I critically examine how historical power structures established over three centuries of colonial rule shape present-day environmental policies. The analysis begins with my critique of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) definition of conservation, highlighting inherent ambiguities regarding equity that may have enabled global power imbalances and the uneven distribution of costs and benefits. I continued by tracing the evolution of marine resource governance …

Quantification Of Tumor Biophysical Heterogeneity Through Mechanical And Ultrastructural Analysis., Bradley James Mahaffey
Quantification Of Tumor Biophysical Heterogeneity Through Mechanical And Ultrastructural Analysis., Bradley James Mahaffey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly invasive, aggressive brain cancer that carries a median survival of 15 months. This poor prognosis is due, in part, to its resistance to standard therapeutic intervention. Recent studies have demonstrated that tumor heterogeneity plays a critical role in facilitation therapy resistance by mediating tumor adaptation through microenvironmental cues. Efforts to describe these microenvironmental differences may aid in the development of strategies to combat resistance. GBM can be separated into two distinct regions – a core and a rim, which are thought to drive specific aspects of tumor evolution. The core is proliferative as evidenced by …
Possible Futures For Colonial Collecting Institutions: A Study Of Historical Societies In The United States, Jen Hoyer
Publications and Research
This article explores how collecting institutions with deeply colonial roots can move into a decolonial future existence, through an in-depth study of historical societies in the United States. Examining their historic roots in colonialism of the United States and the persistence of these colonial identities in spite of a variety of evolutionary trends over the 20th century, this article asks: what decolonial possibilities exist for their future? If institutional shifts have not undone the colonial identities of some collecting institutions, what can? Turning to Sarah Ahmed’s theory on queer use and Saidiya Hartman’s method of critical fabulation, I suggest practical …

Who’S Next? Proposals To Reform New York’S Gubernatorial Line Of Succession, Fordham Law School Rule Of Law Clinic, Jolie Gentzkow, Alex Kasdan, Greta Kaufman
Rule of Law Clinic
A workable line of succession to the governor's office is necessary to maintain stable leadership in a variety of possible scenarios. New York's line of succession is flawed in several ways. Some of the weaknesses stem from the designation of lawmakers as the next successors after the lieutenant governor, which raises separation of powers concerns. Additionally, there are significant ambiguities in the constitutional and statutory succession provisions. And the statutory line of succession statute is impossible to use in many situations because it only covers cases where the governor's office is "vacant" due to "an attack or natural or peacetime …
How Self-Criticism Predicts Momentary Suicidal Ideation Differently For Overcontrolled And Undercontrolled Personality Styles, Ethan Dennis
How Self-Criticism Predicts Momentary Suicidal Ideation Differently For Overcontrolled And Undercontrolled Personality Styles, Ethan Dennis
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and nearly everyone who attempts suicide engages in ideation. Suicidal ideation varies over time and across contexts, indicating the need to untangle the interaction of momentary processes associated with ideation. We predict that people will experience increased ideation in moments of emotional pain when they engage in self-criticism. Moreover, people with differing interpersonal motives, such as that of agency (i.e., valuing competence at tasks deemed important to one’s self-worth) and communion (i.e., valuing the degree of closeness in one’s relationships) may be prompted to self-criticize in moments …
Historians Wear Robes Now? Applying The History And Tradition Standard: A Practical Guide For Lower Courts, Alexandra Michalak
Historians Wear Robes Now? Applying The History And Tradition Standard: A Practical Guide For Lower Courts, Alexandra Michalak
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
Never before has the Supreme Court relied on the history and tradition standard to such a magnitude as in the 2021 term to determine the scope of a range of constitutional rights. [...] In reaffirming this standard, the Supreme Court provided no guidance to lower courts on how to apply and analyze the history and tradition standard. Along with balancing the lack of resources in deciding cases with the history and tradition framework, lower courts must face the reality that this standard presents ample opportunity for one-sided historical analysis. To combat the temptation of conducting unbalanced and cursory reviews of …
Remedying The Insular Cases: Providing Tribal Sovereignty To Unincorporated Territories To Ensure Constitutional Rights For All U.S. Nationals And Citizens, Allison Ripple
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
This Note will focus on the Supreme Court’s decisions in the Insular Cases to demonstrate the origins of denying jus soli citizenship to those born in unincorporated territories and to analyze its direct contradiction to the Fourteenth Amendment and other Supreme Court decisions. It will argue that the Court’s decisions in the Insular Cases were influenced by colonial rule and rooted in racism. Furthermore, this Note will argue that because of these influences, the continued application of the Insular Cases by Congress and the Supreme Court to deny constitutional rights for U.S. nationals and citizens born in unincorporated territories violates …

Residual Pulmonary Vascular Obstruction Following Mechanical Thrombectomy For Submassive Pulmonary Embolism: A Single-Center Analysis, Brian Stegman, Thom G. Dahle, Wade Schmidt, Jacob R. Dutcher, Tanya Glenz
Articles
Background:
Residual pulmonary vascular obstruction (RPVO) following pulmonary embolism (PE) is associated with residual dyspnea, recurrent venous thromboembolism, and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Historically, acute PE treated with anticoagulation alone results in high rates of significant RPVO. Contemporary treatment of submassive PE often involves catheter-based interventions, including mechanical thrombectomy (MT), although their relation to RPVO is not characterized. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the rate of greater than or equal to 10% RPVO in patients treated with MT.
Methods:
Twenty consecutive patients with submassive PE in a single center underwent MT and subsequent planar ventilation/perfusion scintigraphy scan at …

From The Pen Of The Secretary: Latter-Day Saint Women And Relief Society Minute Books, 1868–1889, Mckall Erin Ruell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
In 1868, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as the Mormon church) re-organized their women's organization, the Relief Society. The secretaries of each local ward or congregation of the Relief Society in Utah kept a record of their meetings in their own minute books. These records have largely been neglected by scholars and much can be learned about nineteenth-century Latter-day Saint women through their pages. This thesis examines Relief Society minute books from Cedar City, Fillmore, Meadow, Holden, Spring Lake, Provo, Salt Lake City, and Millville, Utah, looking specifically at Latter-day Saint women's discourse, testimonies, and …

Specialized Recreation, Spatial Behavior, And Ecological Implications In The Nature Reserve Of Orange County, Ca, Jake Van Deursen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
A widespread surge in park and protected area (PPA) visitation strikes managers with the imminent challenge of preserving ecological conditions and maintaining accessibility in the open spaces that are a fundamental component to the health and wellness needs of society. In the field of recreation resource management, recreation specialization, the selective channeling of interests and abilities into a specific recreational activity, has contributed to comprehensive understandings of recreation behavior, site preference, management perceptions and conservation support. Contributing to historical understandings of specialization can inform recreation planning on the diversity of uses occurring in urban-proximate PPAs. Survey data providing information on …
A Revisionist History Of Products Liability, Alexandra D. Lahav
A Revisionist History Of Products Liability, Alexandra D. Lahav
Michigan Law Review
Increasingly courts, including the Supreme Court, rely on ossified versions of the common law to decide cases. This Article demonstrates the risks of this use of the common law. The main contribution of the Article is to demonstrate that the traditional narrative about early products law—that manufacturers were not liable for injuries caused by their products because the doctrine of privity granted producers immunity from suit by the ultimate consumers of their goods—is incorrect. Instead, the doctrinal rule was negligence liability for producers of injurious goods across the United States in the nineteenth century. Courts routinely ignored or rejected privity …

Contra Radicalism Through The Interpreting Verse Of Jihad (Case Study On Nu Online Platform), Kholifah Rahmawati, Heriyanto Heriyanto
Journal of Terrorism Studies
This research attempts to map counter-radicalism in religious-based efforts carried out by a religious organization through digital platforms. With a virtual ethnographic model that focuses on text analysis, it is known that NU Online has carried out counter-radicalism through a religious interpretation approach. By targeting jihad verses, counter-radicalism is done in three ways, namely, deconstruction of the meaning of jihad, reconstruction of the meaning of jihad, and counter-narrative of jihad verses with peace verses. Apart from that, NU Online is also increasing its influence in the digital space by strengthening its narrative and identity as a moderate group with national …

Mixture priors provide an intuitive way to incorporate historical data while accounting for potential prior-data conflict by combining an informative prior with a noninformative prior. However, prespecifying the mixing weight for each component remains a crucial challenge. Ideally, the mixing weight should reflect the degree of prior-data conflict, which is often unknown beforehand, posing a significant obstacle to the application and acceptance of mixture priors. To address this challenge, we introduce self-adapting mixture (SAM) priors that determine the mixing weight using likelihood ratio test statistics or Bayes factors. SAM priors are data-driven and self-adapting, favoring the informative (noninformative) prior component …

Glutamine is a critical metabolite for rapidly proliferating cells as it is used for the synthesis of key metabolites necessary for cell growth and proliferation. Glutamine metabolism has been proposed as a therapeutic target in cancer and several chemical inhibitors are in development or in clinical trials. How cells subsist when glutamine is limiting is poorly understood. Here, using an unbiased screen, we identify ALDH18A1, which encodes P5CS, the rate-limiting enzyme in the proline biosynthetic pathway, as a gene that cells can downregulate in response to glutamine starvation. Notably, P5CS downregulation promotes de novo glutamine synthesis, highlighting a previously unrecognized …

Background and objective: Tumor treating fields (TTFields) therapy have emerged as a potentially effective treatment for various malignancies by delivering low-intensity, intermediate-frequency electrical fields that disrupt many processes inside cells, resulting in the interruption of cell division in cancer cells. Additionally, TTFields therapy has been found to be synergistic with existing therapeutic approaches. In this review, we provide an introduction and background to the primary mechanisms of TTFields and discuss the emerging preclinical and clinical outcomes of this novel cancer treatment technology.
Methods: We performed a literature search on PubMed, ClinicalTrials.Gov, and Google Scholar using the terms 'TTFields' and 'cancer'. …

The Social Determinants Of Health And Genocide: Towards A Public Health Integrated Framework Of Genocide And Mass Violence, Sian Persad, Cheng Xu
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This paper makes a normative argument about transformations of public health as a necessary condition required in any transitional justice process. We seek to bridge the gap between the fields of genocide and public health to understand the recursive relationship between genocide and the social determinants of health. We show that structures and institutions established during genocide create enduring impacts on the public health outcomes of victim and survivor groups even after the ousting of the original perpetrators. Our comparative analysis of the Rwandan Genocide and the colonial genocide of Indigenous communities in Canada surveys the available public health literature …

Broadcast History Gaps When Archival Material Exists: Inserting Peg Lynch And Ethel And Albert Into Sitcom History, Lauren Bratslavsky
Journal of 20th Century Media History
Lucy and Desi. Burns and Allen. Ozzie and Harriet. Ethel and Albert? The first three television couples tend to be the familiar husband-wife pairs that typify American 1950s sitcoms. These characters and their namesake programs, along with the Andersons in Father Knows Best and the Cleavers in Leave it to Beaver, are credited as templates for the domestic sitcom genre, where the narrative logic oscillates between morality lessons and outlandish plots to escape domestic life. When we study or reminisce about 1950s television, Ethel and Albert and their namesake program do not readily come to mind. However, the popularity …

Collaborative Policing For Handling Communalconflicts (Case Study: Conflicts Betweenpapuans And Yogyakartans), Tagor Hutapea
International Review of Humanities Studies
In this study, there are 2 (two) groups of conflicting citizens, namely the Papuans living in Yogyakarta which consist of students and working residents, and Yogyakartans, that is several ethnic groups other than ethnic Papuan. This study uses a qualitative approach and the paradigm of constructivism. The root of the conflicts is the Papuans’ perception of their historical past as well as cultural elements such as poverty, lack of education, and lifestyle. The triggers of conflict is the Papuans’ negative lifestyles, namely frequently get drunk, eating without paying the bill, breaking traffic rules, and always shouting “merdeka” (meaning independence) when …

Interrogating Households In Anticipation Of Disasters: The Feminization Of Preparedness, Chika Watanabe, Celie Hanson
Critical Disaster Studies
It is now a maxim among scholars and policy-makers alike that disaster preparedness needs to involve community-based approaches in order to be effective. These include preparedness strategies in the household. But how do disaster preparedness policies and public discourses define “the household” in the first place? In this article, we explore how particular gendered notions of the household are reproduced in disaster preparedness policies and activities in Japan and the UK. Drawing on historical and cross-cultural analyses, we suggest that household preparedness efforts place the burden of labor on people coded as women—a phenomenon we call “the feminization of preparedness.” …

Emerging evidence indicates a previously unrecognized, clinically relevant spectrum of abnormal aldosterone secretion associated with hypertension severity. It is not known whether excess aldosterone secretion contributes to hypertension during pregnancy. We quantified aldosterone concentrations and angiotensin peptides in serum (using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry) in a cohort of 128 pregnant women recruited from a high-risk obstetrics clinic and followed prospectively for the development of gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, superimposed pre-eclampsia, chronic hypertension, or remaining normotensive. The cohort was grouped by quartile of aldosterone concentration in serum measured in the first trimester, and blood pressure, angiotensin peptides, and hypertension outcomes …
