Egonyu, Fathiya M. Khamis, Chrysantus M. Tanga, Sunday Ekesi, Samuel Kyamanywa, Sevgan Subramanian

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Natural enemies are major challenges in laboratory rearing of grasshoppers, but the identity and virulence of these towards the edible long-horned grasshopper Ruspolia differens (Serville) is scarcely known. In this study, fungi and bacteria were isolated from R. differens collected from Mbarara, Masaka, Hoima, Kampala and Kabale districts in Uganda in 2018, cultured on standard microbial media, identified using molecular techniques and screened for virulence against the insect in laboratory bioassays. Fourteen and nine species of fungi and bacteria were isolated from R. differens, respectively, with the number of isolates varying based on collection site. The most prevalent entomopathogenic fungal …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The root-burrowing nematode, Radopholus similis, is reputedly the most damaging nematode pest of banana and responsible for major production losses. In this study, the endophytic potential of 13 fungal isolates was assessed for the management of R. similis in East African Highland bananas (‘Ng’ombe’). All isolates successfully colonised tissue-cultured banana roots, with isolates from Trichoderma, Fusarium and Hypocrea producing the highest (≥49.1%) and Beauveria isolates the lowest (≤14.4%) colonisation. The fungal endophytes T. asperellum (ICIPE 700) and H. lixii (ICIPE 697) were the most effective in reducing R. similis densities (>81%) relative to the non-inoculated control. However, the combined …

International Investment Agreements And Regulation Of Utilisation Of Water Resources In Africa, Dominic Npoanlari Dagbanja Jan 2023

International Investment Agreements And Regulation Of Utilisation Of Water Resources In Africa, Dominic Npoanlari Dagbanja

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

African constitutions and domestic water legislation provide for the human right to clean and safe drinking water. This right is also sourced from international human rights treaties and declarations to which African states are parties or signatories. Both municipal law and public international law impose the duties of protection and fulfilment of the right to safe drinking water on states. Domestic water laws and regulations require African states to regulate and manage the utilisation of water resources including by approving the grant of rights, concessions, or contracts in respect of the exploitation of water resources. These laws also require the …

Turf Wars And Red Herrings: Recent American Legislations And Their Impact On Global Evs And Semiconductors Trade, Manya Gupta, Arnav Sharma

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

In 2022, the United States began a new journey dedicated to revitalizing its long-lost industrial potential through the Inflation Reduction and CHIPS Acts. While appearing to be classic industrial policies aimed at boosting manufacturing potential in concerned areas, the Acts also mark an attempt at shifting global supply chains to the advantage of the United States. The seemingly innocuous titles of these legislations point towards combating inflation and producing microchips. However, the Acts mask the US’ attempts at shifting critical supplies to domestic or allied territories and must be approached with caution. The Acts contain measures that may attract some …

Regulating Subsidies Contributing To Overcapacity And Overfishing: How India Proposes To Align Trade Policy With Sustainable Fisheries, Pallavi Arora, Ketakee Gondane, Mumrita Gaurdwaj

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

In light of the growing impetus to integrate sustainability issues into the World Trade Organisation (WTO), facilitating coordination between the trade and sustainability regimes has taken centre stage. Managing regime interaction was integral to negotiating the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (AFS), the WTO’s first sustainability agreement. As the outstanding element of the AFS, the overcapacity and overfishing (OCOF) pillar also aims to foster harmony between the principles and concepts of international environmental law, particularly fisheries law and international trade law. Notable in this regard are the principles of sustainable development and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities. Also relevant …

Longevity, as a complex life-history trait, shares an ontogenetic relationship with other quantitative traits, such as epigenetic and environmental factors. Therefore, it is important to identify environmental factors that may modify the epigenome to establish healthy aging. This study explored the association between tap drinking water and longevity in Cilento, Italy, to understand whether trace elements in local drinking water may have an influence on old, nonagenarian, and centenarian people and promote their health and longevity. Data on population and water sources were collected through the National Demographic Statistics, the Cilento Municipal Archives, and the Cilento Integrated Water Service. Ordinary …

Medication Initiation, Patient-Directed Discharges, And Hospital Readmissions Before And After Implementing Guidelines For Opioid Withdrawal Management, Jillian Zavodnick, Md, Nicolette M. Heinsinger, Angelo C. Lepore, Robert C. Sterling Jan 2023

Medication Initiation, Patient-Directed Discharges, And Hospital Readmissions Before And After Implementing Guidelines For Opioid Withdrawal Management, Jillian Zavodnick, Md, Nicolette M. Heinsinger, Angelo C. Lepore, Robert C. Sterling

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVES: Rising rates of hospitalization for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) result in high rates of patient-directed discharge (PDD, also called "discharge against medical advice") and 30-day readmissions. Interdisciplinary addiction consult services are an emerging criterion standard to improve care for these patients, but these services are resource- and expertise-intensive. A set of withdrawal guidelines was developed to guide generalists in caring for patients with opioid withdrawal at a hospital without an addiction consult service.

METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed to determine PDD, 30-day readmission, and psychiatry consult rates for hospitalized patients with OUD during periods before (July …

Effect Of Low-Level Laser On Miniscrew Displacement During Canine Retraction: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial, Aly Osman, Nadia El Harouni, Mohamed Shokry

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Background: Anchorage is an important consideration for successful orthodontic treatment. Skeletal anchorage by miniscrews provided better anchorage control then the ordinary extra-oral and intra-oral appliances. However, the stability of the miniscrews is still questionable since they might move under orthodontic loading.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Low Level Laser on the miniscrew displacement when subjected to orthodontic force during canine retraction using CBCT.

Methods: Twelve patients who required bilateral extraction of upper first premolar and absolute anchorage were recruited from the outpatient clinics of the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of …
