Retention And Persistence Of Low-Income, First-Generation Rural College Students From West Virginia, Rachel D. Nieman
Retention And Persistence Of Low-Income, First-Generation Rural College Students From West Virginia, Rachel D. Nieman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A considerable body of research demonstrates that first-generation college students face greater obstacles to college retention, persistence and completion compared to their non-first-generation counterparts. However, the extant literature rarely explores rurality as a salient factor to understand these challenges. Even less visible in the literature are the experiences and voices of West Virginians. West Virginia is a predominantly rural state and ranks 49th in the nation in terms of educational attainment, with only 19.6% of residents over the age of 25 having earned at least a bachelor’s degree. While rural areas may experience multifaceted struggles, the educational attainment of …

Descriptions Of Breast Self-Care From Inner-City African American And Hispanic Women Seeking Care In A Comprehensive Breast Care Center, Salamata Yoda
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: A plethora of inquiries has irrefutably revealed a decline in the death rates of breast cancer in some ethnic populations due to timely diagnoses, and enhancement in treatment measures. However, not all women have gained equal access to these innovations in healthcare. Certainly, as a repercussion of the noted disparity, the overall breast cancer prevalence among African American and Hispanic women has steadily escalated. Although no single test can detect all breast cancers early, practicing breast self-care consisting of breast self-awareness (BSA) in combination with other screening methods such as clinical breast exam (CBE), mammogram screening, and a suitable …
Driving After Marijuana Use Among Us College Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Yuni Tang
Driving After Marijuana Use Among Us College Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Yuni Tang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Adolescents and college-aged adults account for a large proportion of the United States population and are susceptible to drugs, including marijuana. Since the late 1960s in the United States, numerous states have legalized marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. These recent policy changes may alter people’s attitudes and behaviors about marijuana use, particularly young adults. The expansion of state-level marijuana legalization may also increase accessibility in younger populations and increase reckless driving behavior associated with marijuana use, including driving after marijuana use. During the COVID-19 pandemic, adolescents and young adults experienced heightened stress and anxiety, which have significantly contributed …
Hypoxia Regulates Vessel-Modifying Macrophages And Vice Versa In Tumors, Kayla Jo Steinberger
Hypoxia Regulates Vessel-Modifying Macrophages And Vice Versa In Tumors, Kayla Jo Steinberger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Hypoxia, or low oxygen, is a common feature of solid tumors correlating with poor survival in cancer patients. Growing tumors need a blood supply to deliver oxygen. Tumors attempt to re-acquire oxygen by forming new blood vessels from nearby, pre-existing vessels, a process known as angiogenesis. Past treatments aimed at preventing this process yielded not only disappointing results in the clinic but sometimes worsened the patient’s prognosis making the tumor more hypoxic, emphasizing the urgent need for novel targets. In tumors, angiogenesis is notoriously dysfunctional resulting in leaky, under-perfused blood vessels which cannot adequately deliver oxygen and exacerbates hypoxia. Emerging …
The Enigmatic Nature Of Toxic Masculinity: Utilizing Quasi-Photovoice Methodology To Make Distinctions Between Hegemonic And Toxic Masculinity, Taylor Elizabeth Remsburg
The Enigmatic Nature Of Toxic Masculinity: Utilizing Quasi-Photovoice Methodology To Make Distinctions Between Hegemonic And Toxic Masculinity, Taylor Elizabeth Remsburg
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Studies of masculinity are fraught by inconsistent and unclear definitions. A comparison of literature which uses either hegemonic or toxic masculinity as a framework reveals that toxic masculinity can be virtually indistinguishable from hegemonic masculinity. I posit that toxic masculinity is and should be distinct from hegemonic masculinity. Failure to distinguish toxic masculinity from hegemonic masculinity makes toxicity difficult, if not impossible, to operationalize. I designed a vignette survey to clarify the conceptualization and operationalization of toxic masculinity. My vignette survey, which asks participants to respond to prompts regarding both toxic masculinity and masculinity, uses quasi-photovoice methodology to allow participants …
A Comparison Of Endodontic Root-End Filling Techniques: A Micro-Computed Tomography Analysis, Leslie P. Wolford
A Comparison Of Endodontic Root-End Filling Techniques: A Micro-Computed Tomography Analysis, Leslie P. Wolford
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction:
Researchers have compared the differences between hand compaction of root-end filling bioceramics with compaction of these materials by hand followed by ultrasonic activation (hand/ultrasonic compaction). Additionally, most of these researchers did not utilize Micro-Computed Tomography (Micro-CT) analysis. The purpose of this study is to evaluate total porosity volume of three different bioceramics when compacted by hand alone versus hand/ultrasonic compaction using Micro-CT Analysis.
Materials and methods:
Seventy-two human maxillary central incisors were selected for the study. All were subjected to orthograde endodontic treatment followed by root tip resection 3-mm from the apex at a 90° to the long axis …
Nature Based Interventions For Human Health And Wellbeing, Samantha I. Moyers
Nature Based Interventions For Human Health And Wellbeing, Samantha I. Moyers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background. Nature exposure is beneficial to human health and wellbeing, but the evidence base for nature-based interventions (NBI) is still developing. Heterogeneous naming conventions, study designs, and intervention contexts create difficulty in accessing and assessing the evidence for such programming. While NBI have been utilized in a wide array of human populations, no interventions have been reported among clinical health professions students. Aims. The objectives of this dissertation project were to review the existing body of NBI literature exploring health and wellbeing outcomes, and to conduct a feasibility trial of forest bathing, a type of NBI, among clinical students. Specifically, …
Investigating The Role Of Nudt7-Mediated Peroxisomal Coa Degradation In The Regulation Of Hepatic Coa Levels And Lipid Metabolism, Schuyler Dan Adams Vickers
Investigating The Role Of Nudt7-Mediated Peroxisomal Coa Degradation In The Regulation Of Hepatic Coa Levels And Lipid Metabolism, Schuyler Dan Adams Vickers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coenzyme A (CoA) is a crucial cofactor required to support many essential metabolic processes, including fatty acid oxidation and synthesis, the TCA cycle, and bile acid synthesis. In order to support the proper functioning of these pathways, CoA levels within the cell must be properly regulated. The regulation of CoA levels is achieved through a balance between CoA synthesis and CoA degradation. While the regulation of CoA synthesis has been extensively characterized, the degradation of CoA has received less attention. As such, the contribution of CoA degradation to the regulation of metabolism is poorly understood. NUDT7 is a CoA-specific Nudix …
Shear Bond Strength Comparison Of Bioceramics To Root Dentin., Yasmin Alma Hoffman
Shear Bond Strength Comparison Of Bioceramics To Root Dentin., Yasmin Alma Hoffman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: The purpose of this study is to compare the push-out bond strength of four bioceramic materials to root dentin that are used during regenerative endodontics. The bioceramics being tested are: 1. Biodentine®(Septodont); 2. EndoSequence BC Putty Fast Set® (Brasseler); 3. NeoPutty® (Avalon Biomed); and 4. ProRoot MTA White® (Dentsply). A high bond strength of a bioceramic material to root dentin will provide excellent seal. An improved seal may correlate with less potential for contamination of the pulp space that is undergoing regenerative activity. This in turn will lead to long-term clinical success. The null hypothesis is that there is …
The Role Of Nedd9 In Her2-Driven Breast Cancer., Marc Louis Purazo
The Role Of Nedd9 In Her2-Driven Breast Cancer., Marc Louis Purazo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tumor initiation is often driven by unrestricted proliferation. One such driver of proliferation is Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). HER2 is a receptor tyrosine kinase that is part of the epidermal growth factor receptor family (EFGR) that is commonly overexpressed in breast cancer. HER2 positive (+) breast cancers often respond to anti- HER2 therapy, yet many patients eventually develop resistance. Multiple mechanisms contribute to resistance, including activation of HSP90, PI3K/Akt or Src that rely on adaptor molecules (GRB2, p130cas, NEDD9). Neural precursor cell expressed, developmentally downregulated protein 9 (NEDD9) is an adaptor protein that promotes integrin signaling. We …
Addition Of Apple Pomace To Feeding Substrate On Growth, Development, And Survival Rates Of Yellow Mealworms (Tenebrio Molitor) And Characterization Of Their Proteins Extracted By A Ph-Shift Process, Michelle Duvall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The weight changes, survival/mortality rates, and proximate compositions of Tenebrio molitor (yellow mealworm) larvae whose diets were supplemented with apple pomace were analyzed after a 4-week feeding study to examine the nutritional quality of the insects for use as a future potential food source. Going forward, the terms “mealworm(s)”, "yellow mealworm(s)”, “T. molitor” will be used interchangeably and will always refer to the same species. The mealworm larvae were randomly divided into two groups: in addition to standard worm chow, one group was given 15 g/week of non-nutritive water-storing polymer crystals and the other was given apple pomace …
Personality And Academic Performance In College, Jacob E. Alderson
Personality And Academic Performance In College, Jacob E. Alderson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite mounting evidence for the role of personality in predicting college level academic performance, there are aspects of this association that are still unexplained. With a sample of U.S. undergraduates at a large Appalachian university, this study sought to further establish what is already known about the association between personality and grade point average, credits earned, and retention rates by testing for both linear and quadratic effects. Results showed linear positive effects of conscientiousness, negative linear effects of openness and nonlinear effects of neuroticism for GPA. However, personality traits were not associated with either retention or credits earned. These findings …
Utility Of An Emotion Coding System For Parent-Child Interaction Therapy With Toddlers, Christopher Kyle Owen
Utility Of An Emotion Coding System For Parent-Child Interaction Therapy With Toddlers, Christopher Kyle Owen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Numerous efficacious early interventions target and alter caregiver-child interactions to promote optimal social-emotional outcomes for young children (Bagner et al., 2014). However, research has primarily relied on the use of caregiver report to assess caregiver-child emotion-focused practices, revealing the need for a behavioral observation assessment (Zinsser et al., 2021). Preliminary evidence suggests that Parent-Child Interaction Therapy with Toddlers (PCIT-T) is a well-received and efficacious intervention for reducing disruptive behaviors, improving child internalizing and externalizing behavior, reducing parental stress, and increasing parental sensitivity (Kohlhoff et al., 2021; Kohlhoff, Cibralic, & Morgan, 2020). PCIT-T strives to train caregivers to interact with their …
Understanding And Evaluating Stereotypes Towards Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Symptom Subtypes, Gabriella T. Ponzini
Understanding And Evaluating Stereotypes Towards Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Symptom Subtypes, Gabriella T. Ponzini
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Public stigma has detrimental impacts on those with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet, stereotypes associated with OCD are poorly understood. Given the heterogeneity of OCD symptom presentations, a conceptualization of stereotypes associated with symptom subtypes is warranted to inform stigma reduction efforts.
In Study 1 (N = 60), participants read one of five vignettes on OCD subtypes (Symmetry/Just Right, Contamination, Sexual, Harm/Aggression, or Scrupulous) prior to responding to Internet-delivered open-ended questions. Study 1 methods followed the qualitative description framework, such that data were derived from participant responses and findings were presented using participant language. Prior to final coding and …
Relationships Between Watershed Factors And Community Size Spectra Of The Fish And Macroinvertebrate Communities Of Mid-Appalachian Streams, Jarrett Hunter Landreth
Relationships Between Watershed Factors And Community Size Spectra Of The Fish And Macroinvertebrate Communities Of Mid-Appalachian Streams, Jarrett Hunter Landreth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Freshwater lotic communities are complex, dynamic, and quick to respond to changes to their environment. However, some of the specific mechanisms driving those changes are yet to be fully understood. Here, I will use the community size spectrum (CSS) approach to assess how the CSS slope, elevation, and food chain length of the fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages as well as the combined CSS of 15 mid-sized (2nd-4th order) streams in north-central West Virginia respond across gradients of watershed factors (drainage area, mean drainage slope, mean drainage elevation, drainage % forest, and stream specific conductance). Field sampling was carried out in …
First Year Teacher In Appalachia: Place, Identity, Tensions, Michael Renee Lane
First Year Teacher In Appalachia: Place, Identity, Tensions, Michael Renee Lane
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study centers on one first-year Social Studies teacher who is beginning her teaching career in a rural middle school in central Appalachia. Grounded in sociocultural theory, this qualitative study focuses understanding how the focal teacher discursively constructs her teaching identity including how she makes use of sociocultural resources, social practices, and the discourses she draws from as she describes her experiences. Data is drawn from a five-month interpretive qualitative case study that included semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and the focal teacher’s personal journals. Data analysis indicated that place is crucial in shaping teachers’ beliefs and practices—including their conceptions of …
Assessment Of Regional Bike And Pedestrian Equity In Transportation Plans, Drew Reiter
Assessment Of Regional Bike And Pedestrian Equity In Transportation Plans, Drew Reiter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
While community involvement is legally required as a crucial part of the planning process, historically the traditional state-centric approaches to transportation planning have led to the underrepresentation of transportation-disadvantaged individuals in the process and, thus, to automobile-oriented regions. Planning practices for small urban and rural areas especially, which often lack funding and other resources, have generally overlooked accessible pedestrian, bicycling, and multimodal infrastructure and facilities, resulting in underdeveloped and poorly connected networks. I conducted a social equity evaluation of the regional planning, investment prioritization, and programming processes for pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure using the case study of Monongalia County, West …

Spatial Distribution And Insect Associations Of Frangula Alnus In The Allegheny National Forest, Pennsylvania: Implications For Management, Jennifer S. Greenleaf
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Glossy buckthorn (Frangula alnus) (Rosales: Rhamnaceae) is an invasive European shrub that threatens to displace native vegetation in roadsides and disturbed forests in North America due to its lack of natural enemies, long leaf-out periods, and its ability to survive in a multitude of soil conditions. While well understood in its native range, information regarding F. alnus in North America is lacking. Currently, the management of this invasive shrub relies on an understanding of where it can be found and thus where treatments should be applied. This research investigated the spatial distribution patterns of F. alnus and profiled …

Effects Of Climate Change And Landscape-Scale Forest Management On Avian Communities, Abundance, And Nest Success In The Appalachian Mountains, Hannah L. Clipp
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Birds are integral components of ecosystems and account for billions of dollars in tangible benefits to humans. As such, recent continental declines of bird species have ecological and economic consequences, providing the impetus for my dissertation research. I identified knowledge gaps and proposed novel questions about how birds in the Appalachian Mountains are influenced by changing environmental conditions due to climate change and forest management. The Appalachian Mountains encompass an important biogeographical region with high conservation value due to its myriad habitats and corresponding bird species diversity. Thus, there is a critical need to evaluate the effects of shifting climate …

Role Of Cytochrome P450-Epoxygenases And Adenosine A2a Receptor In The Modulation Of Vascular Response, Stephanie Onyeka Agba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and endothelial dysfunction is a major precursor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Arachidonic acids in the vascular endothelial membrane are metabolized by the cytochrome P450-epoxygenases (CYP-2Js and 2Cs) to produce epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (EETs). These anti-inflammatory metabolites or oxylipins have been shown to be cardio-protective against ischemic/reperfusion injury and mediate vasodilation through hyperpolarization of smooth muscle cells. However, the enzyme called soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), mainly hydrolyzes EETs to its inactive form (DHETs) and an increase in sEH upregulates Angiotensin-II type1-receptor and facilitates endothelial dysfunction.
we previously showed vascular …

Growing awareness of the fashion industry's environmental footprint in terms of water and chemical use, carbon emissions, textile waste, energy usage, and water pollution has focused international attention on sustainability issues in apparel industries. To showcase their commitment to sustainability, many fashion companies turn to certifications and accreditations from third-party organizations. These certifications and accreditations not only help improve a company's performance and marketability but also give them an advantage over their competitors. US textile buyers are also becoming more selective in their purchasing decisions, looking for high-quality products that are produced in a sustainable and socially responsible manner. This …
Vaping With Nicotine During Pregnancy Affects Aortic Structure And Function In Rat Offspring, Sydney Alexis Nassabeh
Vaping With Nicotine During Pregnancy Affects Aortic Structure And Function In Rat Offspring, Sydney Alexis Nassabeh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Electronic cigarette (E-cig) use during pregnancy has grown in popularity due to the marketing of these devices as safer alternatives to traditional cigarettes. However, nicotine is a constituent in cigarettes that is cause for concern and is also present in a majority of E-cig devices. Little has been reported regarding the implications of E-cig use with nicotine during pregnancy on offspring health outcomes. This study tested the hypothesis that in-utero exposure to nicotine-containing E-cig aerosol would result in a wattage-dependent increase in vascular endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffening that would persist throughout the lifespan of the offspring. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats …
A Comparison Of Fish Health Indices Applied To Freshwater Species Of The Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Josiah B. Jensen
A Comparison Of Fish Health Indices Applied To Freshwater Species Of The Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Josiah B. Jensen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fish kills, increased disease prevalence, and endocrine disruption have been observed in multiple freshwater fish populations of the Chesapeake Bay watershed (CBW). Some of these health issues occur in conjunction with declining abundance. A combination of multiple stressors is believed to be weakening sensitive fish species in non-tidal regions of the CBW. Fish health indices such as Deformity, Erosion, Lesion, and Tumor counts (DELTs), and the Health Assessment Index (HAI) are simple tools designed to evaluate the general health of fish populations. Both indices could be widely applied in the watershed because they require limited training and equipment. However, their …

Machine Learning Assisted Framework For Advanced Subsurface Fracture Mapping And Well Interference Quantification, Mohammad Faiq Adenan
Machine Learning Assisted Framework For Advanced Subsurface Fracture Mapping And Well Interference Quantification, Mohammad Faiq Adenan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The oil and gas industry has historically spent significant amount of capital to acquire large volumes of analog and digital data often left unused due to lack of digital awareness. It has instead relied on individual expertise and numerical modelling for reservoir development, characterization, and simulation, which is extremely time consuming and expensive and inevitably invites significant human bias and error into the equation. One of the major questions that has significant impact in unconventional reservoir development (e.g., completion design, production, and well spacing optimization), CO2 sequestration in geological formations (e.g., well and reservoir integrity), and engineered geothermal systems (e.g., …
An Analysis Of Urban Land Use Land Cover (Lulc) Changes In Lilongwe City, Central Malawi (2002–2022), Zola Manyungwa
An Analysis Of Urban Land Use Land Cover (Lulc) Changes In Lilongwe City, Central Malawi (2002–2022), Zola Manyungwa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital city, has grown nearly tenfold in the last 40 years with a 4-5% annual population growth rate, and the city’s population is projected to double over the next decade. Rural to urban migration and natural increase are the driving factors of the city’s urban expansion. Characterised by the urbanisation of poverty, Lilongwe is experiencing uncontrolled and unplanned urban expansion that has led to the growth of informal settlements. Urbanisation leads to land use land cover (LULC) changes that negatively impact the quality of life and the environment. Lilongwe faces many challenges, including high levels of poverty, inequality, …

Essays On Public Policy, Justin Craig Heflin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The first chapter examines the impact of Red Flag Laws on homicide rates and suicide rates. Red Flag Laws seek to implement gun control measures by allowing the removal of firearms from individuals who pose a danger to themselves or others. Using a two-way fixed effects (TWFE) difference-in-differences (DiD) estimations, I demonstrate a negative and plausibly causal relationship between a state implementing a Red Flag Law and homicide rates. While there is also a reduction in suicide rates, I am unable to make causal claims. This study is the first to empirically examine Red Flag Laws, with an eye towards …
