From "Proletariat" To President:The Educational History Of Dr. Cleveland L. Sellers, Jr., Franklin J. Gause
Theses and Dissertations
The focus of my study is the life of Dr. Cleveland L. Sellers, Jr. as a Black activist educator. Using oral history interviews, autobiographical, and biographical resources, alongside a thorough examination of Sellers’ (1973) published works, speeches, and archival materials, I explore how his formative experiences and his experiences as a student activist during the 1954 - 1968 Civil Rights Movement shaped his understanding of education as a tool for liberation. Sellers was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. He later became a faculty member in the History department and the chair of the …

Clusters In The Storm: Regional Economic Specialization Before And After Hurricane Harvey, Gwyneth King Waddington
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, large-scale disaster events have dominated headlines. As the world faces an increasing number of such disasters, it is crucial to understand their impacts beyond immediate monetary losses. Disasters not only directly impact individuals and businesses but may also reshape the spatial patterns of the regional economy. Through a case study of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana, this study examines how disaster events influence regional economic specialization patterns and contribute to uneven impacts across economic supersectors and geographies. Expanding on previous methodologies, this study incorporates temporal analysis tools to identify and investigate case studies of economic change. …

Investigating Environmental And Socioeconomic Contributors To Adult Obesity In The Rio Grande Valley, John Nicholas Cauba, Jihoo Woo, Russel Wiggins, Shizue Mito
School of Medicine Publications
Obesity in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) of Texas remains a critical public health concern, with rates (46.9%) significantly exceeding those of Texas (36%) and the U.S. (34%) (p < 0.001). This study used 2024 County Health Rankings data to analyze environmental and socioeconomic contributors to obesity across 240 Texas counties, with a population-weighted focus on Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr, and Willacy counties. The RGV exhibited markedly poorer access to exercise, higher rates of physical inactivity, lower Food Environment Index scores (FEI = 4.3 vs. 5.7 in Texas), higher rates of uninsurance, worse patient-to–primary care physician (PCP) ratios (2152:1 vs. Texas 1660:1), and increased preventable hospitalizations. Multiple linear regression identified physical inactivity (β = 0.6, p = 0.01) and access to exercise (β = −0.02, p = 0.02) as significant predictors of obesity. Notably, higher uninsured rates were associated with lower reported obesity, likely due to underdiagnosis in the absence of routine care. These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions addressing food access, environmental and recreational infrastructure, along with healthcare infrastructure in the RGV, where socioeconomic disadvantage and structural barriers magnify the impact of national obesity trends on the regional level.
Lessons From Mysticism For Healthcare Providers: Health Care As A Space For Intersubjective Encounters Of Care, Micaela Plantinga, Alexandre A. Martins
Lessons From Mysticism For Healthcare Providers: Health Care As A Space For Intersubjective Encounters Of Care, Micaela Plantinga, Alexandre A. Martins
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Society’s deep divisions, fueled by individualism, competition, consumerism, rigid ideologies, and limited dialogue, have impacted health care, leading to weakened connections between providers and patients. In the U.S., heavy reliance on medical technology and the rise of AI have further eroded these intersubjective bonds, reducing empathetic engagement in care. To address this challenge, the paper explores insights from Christian mystics Saint Teresa of Avila and Edith Stein. Teresa’s teachings on self-examination and humility, despite her life as a cloistered nun, influenced both her religious order and the broader Church. Meanwhile, Stein’s phenomenological approach emphasized empathy and "suffering with" others, viewing …

BACKGROUND: Tracheostomy is a common procedure in intensive care medicine, involving the insertion of an artificial airway through the front of the neck into the trachea. The size of tracheostomy tube in relation to the trachea is important, influencing clinical outcomes and patient experience. Ultrasound is readily available at the bedside and airway applications have been reported, including airway measurement. However, the presence of air within airway lumina presents challenges to ultrasound and causes artefact. Guidance is lacking on tracheal sonography and measurement.
AIM: to characterize the sonoanatomy of the inner tracheal wall and determine reference points for measuring tracheal …

The choroid plexus (ChP) regulates cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) composition, providing essential molecular cues for brain development; yet, embryonic ChP secretory mechanisms remain poorly defined. Here we identify apocrine secretion by embryonic ChP epithelial cells as a key regulator of the CSF proteome and neurodevelopment in male and female mice. We demonstrate that the activation of serotonergic 5-HT

Claims for reparations in international law commonly reflect two competing visions--one transformative, the other corrective. The transformative vision looks to reparations to end the long tail of injustices that are associated with large-scale historic harms. The corrective vision is more confined; it focuses on repairing specific, legally cognizable harms and returning the agents or entities involved as closely as possible to the status quo ante. We argue in this Essay that these two visions have distinct conceptual logics, even though they often overlap in practice, and that the transformative vision cannot carry the burdens that are placed on it.

In Don Quixote, there is a moment when all the knightly novels are thrown into the fire for their fantastical depictions of chivalry. Yet one book is spared: Tirant lo Blanc. It is saved because, unlike the others, it portrays knights who die in their beds-offering a more realistic depiction of medieval battles. Similarly, Liquid Asset stands out as the book that should be preserved from the extensive body of scholarship on water markets. Many works in this field are influenced by ideological biases that shape their analyses. In contrast, Buzz Thompson's books provides the nuance and balance often lacking …

Climate change-driven increases in drought risk pose a critical threat to global carbon and water cycles. However, ecosystem-scale responses remain poorly quantified, particularly for severe, multiyear drought events. We addressed this gap by examining ecosystem-scale carbon and water flux sensitivity to the extreme 2018–19 drought in Australia using data from 14 eddy covariance flux sites. The ecosystems span grasslands and semi-arid woodlands to tropical and temperate forests. The driest sites (classed as “grass” and “very dry”) experienced drastic productivity impacts, with a 65% decrease in Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) over 2 years relative to the pre-drought average. However, fluxes in …

Introduction : Emergent Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents a transitional stage where cognitively unimpaired (CU) individuals exhibit subthreshold but increasing amyloid-β (Aβ) levels. The impact of Aβ accumulation on brain volume loss and cognition during this early stage remains unclear. Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from 408 CU participants who were initially Aβ− (< 15 Centiloids) and followed for up to 15 years. Changes in basal forebrain and hippocampal volume, along with domain-specific cognitive performance, were compared between those who progressed to Aβ+ (≥20 Centiloids) and those who remained Aβ−. Results: Sixty-five CU participants progressed to Aβ+, indicating emergent AD, and showed faster Aβ accumulation and subtle memory decline. However, no significant differences in rate of BF and hippocampal atrophy were observed between groups. Discussion: The results suggest that during this emergent phase of AD, Aβ accumulation is associated with episodic memory loss, in the absence of detectable accelerated brain atrophy. Highlights: Identified cognitively unimpaired individuals in the emergent stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Emergent AD exhibits a greater rate of amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation. No accelerated volume loss detected in the basal forebrain or hippocampus. Emergent AD is also associated with a subtle decline in memory. Early Aβ accumulation may impair cognitive function before structural atrophy.

Disposal of food waste (FW) in landfills remains an unsustainable practice for organic waste management. Simultaneously, pulp and paper mills produce significant amounts of recalcitrant organic waste that is difficult to decompose due to its high lignocellulosic content. In this study, we developed an innovative approach to improve the digestion of pulp and paper mill sludge (PPMS) by amending FW to produce a low chemical oxygen demand (COD) sludge while recovering methane in the process. This codigestion process was evaluated through lab-scale biogas production experiments coupled with a comprehensive economic and environmental sustainability assessment. Biomethane production results revealed that the …

Ecological disturbances are discrete events that alter or transform the physical, chemical, or biological characteristics of ecosystems. Disturbance can cause animal populations to decline and, according to the risk-disturbance hypothesis and population collapse framework, these declines can be predicted by declines in animal body condition. However, no research has empirically examined the general relationship between body condition and abundance, nor their relationship in response to disturbance. We used a combined dataset representing 33 studies and > 42,000 observations of 75 species from Australia, New Zealand, Spain and the United States of America to test predictions relating to the relationship between reptile …

Mechanical Engineering
Electronic waste (e-waste) generation is significantly escalating, while traditional recycling methods, failing to meet sustainability criteria, are still used. The implementation of sustainability requirements calling for recycling will not be achieved unless intensive research is conducted for mitigating and tolerating the presence of accumulating tramp elements in the recycled alloys and even revising the existing standard specifications. This study explores an innovative approach to recycling electronic waste (e-waste) by integrating it with aluminum scrap through conventional melting techniques to produce high-performance industrial alloys aiming to develop novel aluminum alloys with enhanced properties suitable for various industrial applications. The experimental process …
