Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The study explored the readiness and challenges of social media adoption at the Public Records and Archives Administration Department (PRAAD) in Ghana and was guided by the Iacovou, Charalambos L., Izak Benbasat, and Albert S. Dexter model of Electronic Data Interchange adoption. Using the qualitative approach, 13 participants drawn from the Archives Division were interviewed to explore their perspectives. The results showed that besides the participants high understanding and awareness of the benefits of social media adoption, clients were interested to engage PRAAD on social media. However, PRAAD’s readiness to adopt and effectively use social media was inadequate due to …

Community Resilience And Creating Capacities For Risk Reduction In First Nations Communities, Case Study In Minegoziibe Anishinabe (Pine Creek First Nation), Brittany S. Lavallee
Capstone Collection
The colonization of Indigenous peoples in Canada has serious consequences on First Nations, including forced removal and displacement from their ancestral lands, environmental degradation, declining resources and capacities, and human rights violations. First Nations communities are currently facing the amplified effects of human-driven climate change. Sustainability of the environment is not just a concept, but a practiced way of life, that recognizes the interdependence of all living things. This deep respect for Aki (earth) is at the foundation of First Nations cultures and continues to guide their actions to insure better futures for Seven Generations. The community of Minegoziibe Anishinabe …

Artistic Workshops With Patients Of A Psychiatric Day Hospital In France, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau
Presidential Fellows Articles and Research
This article delineates a study conducted within a psychiatric day hospital in France, adhering to the principles of institutional psychotherapy and therapeutic clubs that originated from the anti-psychiatric movement of the 1970s. The study specifically explores two activities within this framework: a music club and a video club. The primary objective of each club was to establish activities involving both the patients and the care staff to dissolve the boundaries between them. Additionally, these activities aimed to engage both patients and care staff in the conceptualization and execution processes, thereby fostering a collaborative approach within the psychiatric care setting.

Role-Reversibility, Ai, And Equitable Justice - Or: Why Mercy Cannot Be Automated, Stephen E. Henderson, Kiel Brennan-Marquez
Role-Reversibility, Ai, And Equitable Justice - Or: Why Mercy Cannot Be Automated, Stephen E. Henderson, Kiel Brennan-Marquez
JCLC Online
A few years ago, we developed the concept of “role-reversibility” in AI governance: the idea that it matters whether a party exercising judgment is reciprocally vulnerable to the effects of judgment. This idea, we argued, supplies a deontic reason to maintain certain spheres of human judgment even if (or when) truly intelligent machines become demonstrably superior in every utilitarian sense. While computer science remains far from that holy grail, generative AI is raging through systems as diverse as healthcare, finance, advertising, law, and academe, making it imperative to further shore up our claim. We do so by situating role-reversibility within …
The Show Soldiers: The Rifle Volunteers And The First World War, Kyle Lierman
The Show Soldiers: The Rifle Volunteers And The First World War, Kyle Lierman
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The British Rifle Volunteer movement came about as a response to the perceived threat of invasion by France in 1859. One of the primary responsibilities of the Volunteers was to function as an auxiliary force for the defense of Britain. However, no invasion would come, and the Volunteers would see no combat outside a small deployment during the Second Boer War. The Volunteer Force eventually became a new organization named the Territorial Force in 1908 during the sweeping series of British Army reforms after 1900. Despite the limited military experience, the Volunteer movement would considerably influence the British military and …
Health Insurance Determinants Of The Working-Class, Lall Ramroo
Health Insurance Determinants Of The Working-Class, Lall Ramroo
Student Theses
Abstract:
This research delves into healthcare coverage disparities within the working class, spotlighting challenges in accessing essential services. Leveraging data from the 2021 American Community Survey, we scrutinize coverage intricacies for those above Medicaid eligibility yet unable to afford private insurance. Findings unveil a worrisome trend: the working class faces limited healthcare access due to income thresholds, placing them in precarious situations. Those earning too much for Medicaid but lacking private insurance means or employer-sponsored coverage grapple with significant obstacles. This paper underscores the need for targeted policies to bridge healthcare gaps for the working class, advocating for equitable access …

Palmitate Induces Integrated Stress Response And Lipoapoptosis In Trophoblasts, Prakash Kumar Sahoo, Chandan Krishnamoorthy, Jennifer R. Wood, Corrine Hanson, Ann Anderson-Berry, Justin L. Mott, Sathish Kumar Natarajan
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Maternal obesity increases the risk of childhood obesity and programs the offspring to develop metabolic syndrome later in their life. Palmitate is the predominant saturated free fatty acid (FFA) that is transported across the placenta to the fetus. We have recently shown that saturated FFA in the maternal circulation as a result of increased adipose tissue lipolysis in third trimester of pregnancy induces trophoblast lipoapoptosis. Here, we hypothesized that palmitate induces integrated stress response by activating mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and granular stress and lipoapoptosis in trophoblasts. Choriocarcinoma-derived third-trimester placental trophoblast-like cells (JEG-3 and JAR) referred …
Evaluating To What Extent The ‘Scientific Exemption Clause’ Acts As A Loophole And Influences International Whaling, Amy Wick
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The purpose of the study was to identify if the scientific exemption clause of the international whaling ban is a loophole for commercial hunting to continue under disguise and to evaluate the level of public perception towards whaling exemptions and longevity of policy. The study used secondary data from the International Whaling Commission to calculate total catch data for commercial and scientific brackets. It also used primary data in the form of questionnaires to identify public knowledge and belief. From the results, it was identified that Japan had the most consistent scientific programme and Norway the most consistent commercial programme. …
How Can Informal Education Settings Be Best Used To Influence Engagement With Environmental Issues?, Hayley L. Hill
How Can Informal Education Settings Be Best Used To Influence Engagement With Environmental Issues?, Hayley L. Hill
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Increasing global impacts of environmental issues will affect children’s futures. Formal primary school curriculums are insufficient in providing the information children need to understand these issues which increases the need for informal education settings, such as extracurricular eco clubs. By studying how classroom-based clubs engage primary school children with environmental issues through motivations to join, activities undertaken within clubs, and level of engagement they inspire outside the sessions, recommendations can be made to maximise knowledge and engagement opportunities for children both in and out of sessions. Primary school children attending an after school eco club over five weeks were given …
A Landmark Environmental Law Looks Ahead, Robert L. Fischman
A Landmark Environmental Law Looks Ahead, Robert L. Fischman
Articles by Maurer Faculty
In late December 1973, the United States enacted what some would come to call “the pitbull of environmental laws.” In the 50 years since, the formidable regulatory teeth of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) have been credited with considerable successes, obliging agencies to draw upon the best available science to protect species and habitats. Yet human pressures continue to push the planet toward extinctions on a massive scale. With that prospect looming, and with scientific understanding ever changing, Science invited experts to discuss how the ESA has evolved and what its future might hold.

Cohesion: A Core Outcome Set For The Treatment Of Neonatal Encephalopathy, Fiona A. Quirke, Shabina Ariff, Malcolm R. Battin, Caitlin Bernard, Linda Biesty, Frank H. Bloomfield, Mandy Daly, Elaine Finucane, Maira Niaz, Farhana Tabassum
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Background: Heterogeneity in outcomes reported in trials of interventions for the treatment of neonatal encephalopathy (NE) makes evaluating the effectiveness of treatments difficult. Developing a core outcome set for NE treatment would enable researchers to measure and report the same outcomes in future trials. This would minimise waste, ensure relevant outcomes are measured and enable evidence synthesis. Therefore, we aimed to develop a core outcome set for treating NE.
Methods: Outcomes identified from a systematic review of the literature and interviews with parents were prioritised by stakeholders (n = 99 parents/caregivers, n = 101 healthcare providers, and n = 22 …

Peer review is an essential process in scientific research, ensuring the comprehensiveness, accuracy, and suitability of manuscripts for publication. Neurology education research differs from biomedical clinical research in several ways. These differences encompass specific paradigms, the use of theoretical frameworks, and different methodological approaches. Despite the high number of studies and journal publications on neurology education, there is a dearth of resources and guidance on how to perform a formal review on this specific literature. This article aims to review the distinctive features of neurology education from clinical research while proposing an organizational framework and model for performing peer reviews …
Divergent Self-Assembly Of Block Heterochiral Stereoisomer Arrays, Conor Louis O'Neill
Divergent Self-Assembly Of Block Heterochiral Stereoisomer Arrays, Conor Louis O'Neill
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The autonomous organization of parts into ordered architectures, or biomolecular self-assembly, is an elementary natural process that defines and guides the construction and function of living organisms. This phenomenon has emerged as a potent tool for the creation of novel biomaterials, with peptide-based instances benefitting from intrinsic modularity, ease of de novo design and synthesis, biocompatibility, and chemical versatility. These properties enable methodical modifications that generate suprastructures with a wide variety of morphologies and functionalities, supporting a broad range of biomedical applications. Further, the chiral nature of amino acids permits synthesis of either left- or right-handed peptides; in recent years, …

Building A Recovery Ecosystem For The Catawba Region, Mary Beth Dunkenberger, David Moore, Lara Nagle, Sam Rasoul
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
The opioid and addiction crisis has become a defining characteristic of
21st century America, profoundly affecting the Commonwealth of Virginia in
terms of lives lost, families devastated, communities compromised, and
economic and opportunity costs at multiple levels. This scenario originated
with a rapid increase in opioid prescriptions issued to patients by health care
providers for various pain diagnoses during the 1990s and into the early
2000s. Despite early warnings that the new opioid formulations were far
more addictive than indicated by faulty research trials and marketing claims,
treating pain as the “fifth vital sign” became a widespread practice as a …

The “Mother's Heart”: Social Networks And Smallpox Inoculation In The 18th Century, Jennalyn Welsh Mackay
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
In 1721 the practice of inoculation was put on trial in the American colonies. This incredible medical advancement, practiced for centuries in different parts of the world, had an irregular but unforgettable impact on the eastern seaboard of the North American continent. Inoculation provided individuals and families with an opportunity to control this terrible scourge, however, few were keen to initially take on the risk. The history of inoculation throughout the world and especially in Europe has been well studied. Even as the debate raged, physicians wrote their own histories on the subject. Less studied is the impact that women’s …
