Palliative Care Quality Of Life Outcomes In Adults With Chronic Illness, Jackie Steigerwald

Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner

In adult populations with chronic illnesses, implementation of palliative care may provide the opportunity to slow the disease process, manage symptoms, and improve patients' overall quality of life. Without palliative care implementation, the aspects of psychosocial needs may go clinically unaddressed with disease progression. Palliative care provides an opportunity for multidisciplinary providers to make interventions to improve all aspects of quality of life. The aim of this project is to evaluate the implementation of palliative care services in patients with chronic illnesses, the World Health Organization Quality of Life Abbreviated (WHOQOL BREF) quality of life scale and compare them with …

Analysis Of Benefits Of Udot's Expanded Incident Management Team Program, Joel Clegg Hyer Nov 2023

Analysis Of Benefits Of Udot's Expanded Incident Management Team Program, Joel Clegg Hyer

Theses and Dissertations

In 2019, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) funded a research study evaluating the performance measures of UDOT's expanded Incident Management Team (IMT) program. The number of IMTs patrolling Utah roadways increased from 13 to 25 between 2018 and 2020. Crash data were collected from the Utah Highway Patrol's Computer Aided Dispatch database and from the UDOT TransSuite database to compare IMT performance measures between the two years and to evaluate the benefits of the expanded IMT program. However, these data were compromised due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study collected data for 2022 using the same …

Circulating Metabolites May Illustrate Relationship Of Alcohol Consumption With Cardiovascular Disease, Patricia Emogene Miller, Xiuqing Guo, Jerome I Rotter, Jennifer A Smith, Bing Yu, Matthew Nayor, Daniel Levy, Chunyu Liu, Jiantao Ma Nov 2023

Circulating Metabolites May Illustrate Relationship Of Alcohol Consumption With Cardiovascular Disease, Patricia Emogene Miller, Xiuqing Guo, Jerome I Rotter, Jennifer A Smith, Bing Yu, Matthew Nayor, Daniel Levy, Chunyu Liu, Jiantao Ma

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Metabolite signatures of long-term alcohol consumption are lacking. To better understand the molecular basis linking alcohol drinking and cardiovascular disease (CVD), we investigated circulating metabolites associated with long-term alcohol consumption and examined whether these metabolites were associated with incident CVD.

METHODS: Cumulative average alcohol consumption (g/day) was derived from the total consumption of beer, wine, and liquor on average of 19 years in 2428 Framingham Heart Study Offspring participants (mean age 56 years, 52% women). We used linear mixed models to investigate the associations of alcohol consumption with 211 log-transformed plasma metabolites, adjusting for age, sex, batch, smoking, diet, …

Background: Selpercatinib, a highly selective potent and brain-penetrant RET inhibitor, was shown to have efficacy in patients with advanced RET fusion-positive non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in a nonrandomized phase 1-2 study.

Methods: In a randomized phase 3 trial, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of first-line selpercatinib as compared with control treatment that consisted of platinum-based chemotherapy with or without pembrolizumab at the investigator's discretion. The primary end point was progression-free survival assessed by blinded independent central review in both the intention-to-treat-pembrolizumab population (i.e., patients whose physicians had planned to treat them with pembrolizumab in the event that they were …

Addressing The Unmentionable At The Circulation Desk: An Unlikely Library Partnership For An Often-Overlooked Cause: Period Equity, Jessica Garner Nov 2023

Addressing The Unmentionable At The Circulation Desk: An Unlikely Library Partnership For An Often-Overlooked Cause: Period Equity, Jessica Garner

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

The role of libraries at universities has grown over the years in surprising ways to improve service to the academic and student community. One such surprising change came from a project aimed at decreasing period poverty. The Period Equity Movement (PEM) was created in collaboration with the university’s Office of Student Wellness and Health Promotion through funding that came from a $48,000 Sustainability Fee grant and other internal funding. The grant specifically focused on purchasing reusable products such as menstrual cups and fabric pads and organic disposable tampons and pads. The Access Services Department became an impactful partner in this …

We use data from Waves 1–3 of Growing Up in Ireland (Cohort ’98). Our analytic sample consisted of n = 6,039 participants reporting in all 3 Waves. Data were collected in Waves 1 and 2 when the children were 9 and 13 years old and in Wave 3 at age 17/18 years. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) models were used to analyse teenage substance use at Wave 3. Parental smoking was associated with …

Asymmetric Intramolecular Hydroboration Via A Unique Chiral Chloroborane, Breanna N. Von Dollen Nov 2023

Asymmetric Intramolecular Hydroboration Via A Unique Chiral Chloroborane, Breanna N. Von Dollen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A novel enantiomerically pure, internally coordinated alkylchloroborane monomer was synthesized using commercially available materials. The applications of this unique chiral borane (11A) were explored. It was known that H. C. Brown had developed a chloro?derivative of his monoalkyl borane (IpcBCl(OR)) and was able to convert symmetrical epoxides into chlorohydrins with reasonable ee’s. For example, Brown obtained the chlorohydrin from cyclohexene oxide with a 35% ee. It was unlcear if this novel chiral chloroborane would generate chlorohydrins or simply alcohols since there is still a hydrogen present unlike Brown’s chloroborane. The application of the chiral chloroborane for reduction of ketones was …

Combinedeepnet: A Deep Network For Multistep Prediction Of Near-Surface Pm2.5 Concentration, Prasanjit Dey, Soumyabrata Dev, Bianca Schoen-Phelan

Conference papers

PM2.5 is a type of air pollutant that can cause respiratory and cardiovascular problems. Precise PM2.5 ( μg/m3 ) concentration prediction may help reduce health concerns and provide early warnings. To better understand air pollution, a number of approaches have been presented for predicting PM2.5 concentrations. Previous research used deep learning models for hourly predictions of air pollutants due to their success in pattern recognition, however, these models were unsuitable for multisite, long-term predictions, particularly in regard to the correlation between pollutants and meteorological data. This article proposes the combine deep network (CombineDeepNet), which combines multiple …

Cytomulate: Accurate And Efficient Simulation Of Cytof Data, Yuqiu Yang, Kaiwen Wang, Zeyu Lu, Tao Wang, Xinlei Wang Nov 2023

Cytomulate: Accurate And Efficient Simulation Of Cytof Data, Yuqiu Yang, Kaiwen Wang, Zeyu Lu, Tao Wang, Xinlei Wang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Recently, many analysis tools have been devised to offer insights into data generated via cytometry by time-of-flight (CyTOF). However, objective evaluations of these methods remain absent as most evaluations are conducted against real data where the ground truth is generally unknown. In this paper, we develop Cytomulate, a reproducible and accurate simulation algorithm of CyTOF data, which could serve as a foundation for future method development and evaluation. We demonstrate that Cytomulate can capture various characteristics of CyTOF data and is superior in learning overall data distributions than single-cell RNA-seq-oriented methods such as scDesign2, Splatter, and generative models like LAMBDA.

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests are being developed, but little is known about patient receptivity to their use for cancer screening. The current study assessed patient interest in such testing. Our team conducted a prospective, observational study among primary care patients in a large, urban health system. They were asked to complete a telephone survey that briefly described a new blood test in development to identify multiple types of cancer, but was not currently recommended or covered by insurance. The survey included items to assess respondent background characteristics, perceptions about MCED testing, and interest in having such an MCED test. …

Nurses' Experience Of Family-Centered Rounds In The Intensive Care Unit, Kaitlyn King Nov 2023

Nurses' Experience Of Family-Centered Rounds In The Intensive Care Unit, Kaitlyn King

Theses

A paradigm shift in the Canadian healthcare system has transitioned the patient and family from care recipients to integral and valued members of the multidisciplinary team. Implementation of family-centered care within the context of the adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) remains slow to adopt in Canada despite evidence that open visitation and family presence offer many benefits to improve the delivery of quality care, and satisfaction with the overall patient experience. The COVID-19 pandemic has further complicated the ability of the healthcare team to effectively include patients and families into their daily multidisciplinary rounds. Restricted visitation policies, infection control and …

Prosecutors Or Helpers: An Institutional Ethnography Of Child Protective Services Casework, Anna Maria Rockhill Nov 2023

Prosecutors Or Helpers: An Institutional Ethnography Of Child Protective Services Casework, Anna Maria Rockhill

Dissertations and Theses

The mission of child welfare is to strengthen the ability of families to care for their children and to protect children and provide aid, services, or referrals to families where maltreatment is said to have occurred. The vast majority of the families who become involved with child welfare are multiply disadvantaged and child welfare is a key feature of the array of public supports for struggling families. However, the institution fails many of the families it serves. Despite recent efforts by those in the field to promote collaboration and engagement, many parents experience child welfare as neither empowering nor helpful …

Historical Kinship And Categorical Mischief: The Use And Misuse Of Doctrinal Borrowing In Intellectual Property Law, Mark Bartholomew, John Tehranian Nov 2023

Historical Kinship And Categorical Mischief: The Use And Misuse Of Doctrinal Borrowing In Intellectual Property Law, Mark Bartholomew, John Tehranian

Journal Articles

Analogies are ubiquitous in legal reasoning, and, in copyright jurisprudence, courts frequently turn to patent law for guidance. From introducing doctrines meant to regulate online intermediaries to evaluating the constitutionality of resurrecting copyrights to works from the public domain, judges turn to patent law analogies to lend ballast to their decisions. At other times, however, patent analogies with copyright law are quickly discarded and differences between the two regimes highlighted. Why? In examining the transplantation of doctrinal frameworks from one intellectual property field to another, this Article assesses the circumstances in which courts engage in doctrinal borrowing, discerns their rationale …

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CIs) restore hearing to deafened patients. The foreign body response (FBR) following cochlear implantation (post-CI) comprises an infiltration of macrophages, other immune and non-immune cells, and fibrosis into the scala tympani, a space that is normally devoid of cells. This FBR is associated with negative effects on CI outcomes including increased electrode impedances and loss of residual acoustic hearing. This study investigates the extent to which macrophage depletion by an orally administered CSF-1R specific kinase (c-FMS) inhibitor, PLX-5622, modulates the tissue response to CI and neural health.
