Surveying And Evaluating Pests And Beneficial Insects In Utah's Vegetable Production, Nick Volesky, Amelia Olds, Marion Murray

All Current Publications

The Utah State University (USU) Extension Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program conducted a season-long survey evaluating arthropod pests, plant diseases, pollinators, and other beneficials on a ¼-acre vegetable farm and adjacent pollinator habitat located in Logan, Utah. Understanding the roles of these groups on plant health and the efficacy of nonchemical pest management approaches critically impacts the sustainability of Utah’s vegetable industry. Survey findings have been used as a reference for developing video content, fact sheets, and presentations to educate Utah’s commercial and small-acreage farmers.

Assays to quantify natural killer (NK) cell killing efficacy have traditionally focused on assessing either direct killing or antibody dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) independently. Due to the probability that immunotherapeutic interventions affect NK cell-mediated direct killing and NK cell-mediated ADCC differently, we developed an assay with the capacity to measure NK cell-mediated direct killing and ADCC simultaneously with cells from the same human donor. Specifically, this design allows for a single NK cell population to be split into several experimental conditions (e.g., direct killing, ADCC), thus controlling for potential confounders associated with human-to-human variation when assessing immunotherapy impacts. Our Natural …

Workplace Violence In Emergency Departments, Education And De-Escalation Training: A Benchmark Study, Summer Block

MSN Capstone Projects

Most people do not go to work and fear being assaulted or harassed daily. However, for emergency nurses in this county that is exactly what it has come to. Up to 96% of emergency department nurses state they have been verbally abused. This entails name calling, verbal threats, being shouted at and being sworn at. Anywhere from 25% to 60% of these nurses have had to face physical assaults while on the job. (Al-Aadi, 2020; Copeland & Henry, 2017; Grinberg, 2022; Li et al., 2019; McDermid et al., 2019). Physical assaults can include being spit on, slapped, punched, kicked, choked, …

Preliminary Content And Construct Validity Of A New Model To Differentiate Research Skills From Evidence‐Based Practice Skills: Core, Evidence Application, Research (Cear) Model, Raeanne Jordan, Rosanna P. Watowicz, Catherine Phillips, Rita Obeid, Rosa K. Hand

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Research is the scientific basis for the profession of dietetics, as it must be located and applied in evidence‐based practice (EBP). EBP is often presented as a foundational skill for research. CEAR – Core, Evidence Application, Research – is a newly proposed model that separates Research and Evidence Application skills into distinct domains, jointly supported by a set of Core skills, thus acknowledging that education and advancement in one domain neither requires nor precipitates education and advancement in the other. The goal was to investigate the content and construct validity of the new CEAR Model. Methods: A cross‐sectional online …

Cytomegalovirus And Varicella Zoster Virus Coinfection-Associated Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (Ondine's Curse), Marine Isakadze, Benjamin Zwain, Alan J. Velander, Jesus Lovera

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Central hypoventilation syndrome (CHS) is a rare condition resulting from damage to the respiratory centers in the central nervous system (CNS). It can be congenital or acquired and can cause hypoventilation, inadequate gas exchange, and respiratory failure, often during sleep but sometimes even while awake. CHS can lead to respiratory failure and life-threatening complications if not identified promptly. In this report, we present a rare case of a patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), who developed CHS likely due to an opportunistic infection by cytomegalovirus (CMV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV), manifesting as a lesion in the …

Southern California experienced unprecedented megadrought between 2012 and 2018. During this time, Malosma laurina, a chaparral species normally resilient to single-year intense drought, developed extensive mortality exceeding 60% throughout low-elevation coastal populations of the Santa Monica Mountains. We assessed the physiological mechanisms by which the advent of megadrought predisposed M. laurina to extensive shoot dieback and whole-plant death. We found that hydraulic conductance of stem xylem (Ks, native) was reduced seven to 11-fold in dieback adult and resprout branches, respectively. Staining of stem xylem vessels revealed that dieback plants experienced 68% solid-blockage, explaining the reduction in water transport. Following Koch's …

Exploring Crowdsourcing Accountability For Mapping Antarctica: A Case Study Using 5 Years Of Social Media Data, Ayşe Gi̇z Gülnerman Gengeç

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The continent of Antarctica is one of the most challenging regions in terms of generating and updating geodata. Extensive research has been conducted on geodata acquisition, primarily focusing on earth observation satellites and local surveys in polar regions. Earth observation satellites offer limited spatial, temporal, and semantic data, while local surveys are constrained by polar regions' size and challenging conditions. This article delves into the crowdsourced data, aiming to significantly enhance geodata contribution in polar regions beyond current methods. To our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to address social media data, a form of crowdsourcing, specifically …

Effect Of Different Pre-Growth Temperatures On The Survival Kinetics Of Salmonella Enterica And Listeria Monocytogenes In Fresh-Cut Salad During Refrigerated Storage, Avninder Kaur, Veerachandra K. Yemmireddy

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The effect of the pre-growth temperature of bacterial cultures on their subsequent survival kinetics in fresh-cut produce during refrigerated storage was investigated in this study. Three-strain cocktails of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica, cultured at different growth temperatures (4, 21, and 37 °C) were inoculated on fresh-cut mixed salad and on individual produce in the mixed salad. The inoculated samples were stored at 4 °C and 80 ± 2% relative humidity (RH) for up to 72 h and the growth, survival, or death kinetics were determined at regular intervals. The results indicate that depending upon the type of pathogen …

Stressors, Academic Performance, And Learned Resourcefulness In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Anne-Marie Goff Nov 2023

Stressors, Academic Performance, And Learned Resourcefulness In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Anne-Marie Goff

Dissertations

Despite extensive research establishing that stress affects problem-solving ability and coping, and leads to decreased learning, academic performance, and retention in nursing students, a paucity of research explores specific factors that could enhance these learning processes and outcomes. This explanatory correlational study examines the mediating effect of learned resourcefulness, the ability to regulate emotions and cognitions, on the relationships of stressors—both personal and academic—to academic performance in baccalaureate nursing students. Gadzella's Student-life Stress Inventory (SSI) and Rosenbaum's Self-Control Scale (SCS), a measure of learned resourcefulness, were administered to 53 junior level baccalaureate nursing students (92.5% female; 84.9% Caucasian; 9.4% African-American …

Multidimensional Comparison Of Underwater Soundscapes Using The Soundscape Code, Dylan C. Wilford, Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds, S. Bruce Martin Nov 2023

Multidimensional Comparison Of Underwater Soundscapes Using The Soundscape Code, Dylan C. Wilford, Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds, S. Bruce Martin

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The soundscape of a given habitat is a product of its physical environment, human activity, and presence of soniferous marine life, which can be used to understand ecosystem processes, habitat quality, and biodiversity. Shallow coral habitats are hotspots of biodiversity and marine life. Deep-sea coral environments, in comparison, are generally poorly understood. Four soundscapes along the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) and one soundscape from the Great Barrier Reef were quantified to explore how differences in habitat, depth, and substrate manifest acoustically. Comparisons were made between (1) deep, cold-water and shallow, warm-water coral reefs and (2) deep-sea coral and sandy …

Reducing Stress After Trauma (Reset): Study Protocol For A Randomized, Controlled Trial Of An Online Psychoeducational Program And Video Therapy Sessions For Children Hospitalized After Trauma, Heather T Keenan, Shari L Wade, Devi Miron, Angela P Presson, Amy E Clark, Linda Ewing-Cobbs Nov 2023

Reducing Stress After Trauma (Reset): Study Protocol For A Randomized, Controlled Trial Of An Online Psychoeducational Program And Video Therapy Sessions For Children Hospitalized After Trauma, Heather T Keenan, Shari L Wade, Devi Miron, Angela P Presson, Amy E Clark, Linda Ewing-Cobbs

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress symptoms develop in a quarter to half of injured children affecting their longer-term psychologic and physical health. Evidence-based care exists for post-traumatic stress; however, it is not readily available in some communities. We have developed an eHealth program consisting of online, interactive educational modules and telehealth therapist support based in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, the Reducing Stress after Trauma (ReSeT) program. We hypothesize that children with post-traumatic stress who participate in ReSeT will have fewer symptoms compared to the usual care control group.

METHODS: This is a randomized controlled trial to test the effectiveness of the ReSeT …

A Preliminary Study Connecting School Improvement And Mtss With Student Outcomes, Hank Bohanon, Meng-Jia Wu, Ali Kushki, Cheyne Levesseur

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

Schools have an increased focus on implementing schoolwide initiatives (e.g., multi-tiered systems of support; MTSS) to address risk factors related to dropping out. These interventions can involve multiple domains, including academic, behavioural, and social and emotional supports. Although researchers suggest that schoolwide interventions are effective, school staff may need help implementing various content (e.g., academic, behaviour) domains into a cohesive plan. This preliminary study focused on nine schools in the Midwestern United States that implemented schoolwide interventions as part of a statewide technical assistance approach. The research included using survey and extant data for all students to determine the connections …
