Recent advancements in autonomous vehicle (AV) technology have the potential to reduce road accidents caused by human error. However, to enhance their safety and performance, it is crucial to understand the patterns of AV collisions. This study examines AV collisions by analyzing their temporal and spatial patterns. Based on reports from the California DMV between 2014 and 2022, the analysis reveals that rear-end collisions are the most common type, while incidents involving pedestrians and overturned vehicles are rare. The majority of collisions involve mid-sized vehicles, and AVs are responsible for a minority of accidents. The study also identifies clusters of …

Exploring Food Bank Deserts And Child Hunger In The Socioeconomic Contexts Of K-12 Schools, Cathy Thompson Pope
Exploring Food Bank Deserts And Child Hunger In The Socioeconomic Contexts Of K-12 Schools, Cathy Thompson Pope
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Food insecurity is of great concern in this country as more and more children, seniors, and families experience inadequate nutritious food to live healthy, productive lives. A case study of Mid-South Food Bank examines the concept of food bank deserts and looks at how children and families in low-income neighborhoods might have access to food. Previous definitions of food bank deserts have neglected to include two criteria present in food deserts, that is low-income and low accessibility to food resources. Utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS), this paper will define, create, and analyze spatial connections between bus stops, food bank partner …

Transformative Dynamics: Reframing The Role Of Reparations In Transforming Social Order, Emily J. Kawahara
Transformative Dynamics: Reframing The Role Of Reparations In Transforming Social Order, Emily J. Kawahara
San Diego Law Review
According to Kathryn Sikkink, a revolution of human rights advocacy in tandem with heightened levels of accountability for human rights abuses has led to a “justice cascade,” where it is now expected that human rights violators will be held criminally accountable for transgressions. This normative shift of prosecuting individual perpetrators for human rights violations has also affected the larger picture of justice: human rights violations do not live in a silo and often occur against a backdrop of much-needed institutional reform. This Article considers the relationship between transitional justice, development programs, and social services, specifically using reparations as an example …
No Apology Until Abolition: Redressing The Ongoing Atrocity Of Slavery, Brandee Mcgee
No Apology Until Abolition: Redressing The Ongoing Atrocity Of Slavery, Brandee Mcgee
San Diego Law Review
There are currently more Black adults under correctional control than there were enslaved at the height of slavery. Despite Black Americans making up only 12% of the domestic population, states imprison them at more than five times the rate of White Americans. In California, the ratio is even higher: the “Black/white disparity [is] larger than 9:1.” Although many White Americans are also imprisoned, Michelle Alexander in The New Jim Crow argues that these White prisoners are “collateral damage” to mask a racialized prison-industrial complex (PIC)—with mass incarceration as the main feature.
In 1865, after decades of activism by the abolitionist …
Affirming And Supporting Black Women’S Lactation Agency As Redress, Dorothy Couchman
Affirming And Supporting Black Women’S Lactation Agency As Redress, Dorothy Couchman
San Diego Law Review
This Article opens with Truth baring her breasts for four reasons. First, for many women like Truth who survived enslavement, lactation was a specifically gendered and racialized site of atrocity. Under chattel slavery in the United States, enslaved women were prevented from breastfeeding their infants as needed, compelled to wean their children far too early at the demands of their enslavers, or made to wet-nurse their enslavers’ White children in place of their own. This lactational coercion was part of a larger atrocity of reproductive abuse perpetuated against enslaved women.
Second, as Truth notes, enslaved women’s children were harmed when …

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers
General anesthesia (GA) during surgery is commonly maintained by inhalational sevoflurane. Previous resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) studies have demonstrated suppressed functional connectivity (FC) of the entire brain networks, especially the default mode networks, transitioning from the awake to GA condition. However, accuracy and reliability were limited by previous administration methods (e.g. face mask) and short rs-fMRI scans. Therefore, in this study, a clinical scenario of epilepsy patients undergoing laser interstitial thermal therapy was leveraged to acquire 15 min of rs-fMRI while under general endotracheal anesthesia to maximize the accuracy of sevoflurane level. Nine recruited patients had fMRI acquired during …

Latinx Social Work Students’ Well-Being Prior To And During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Leyla Feize
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
This is a reflection on social work students’ well-being before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This narrative was indirectly written by the students, as it is their interpretations of their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors derived from drawing their own mandalas daily for one month. It is a comparison of two stories of struggle, hope, and change during two different periods which were close in time, but far in reality.

Unmasking The Exploitation Of Minority Voices In American Theatre Throughout The 21st Century, Rhea Chhagan
Unmasking The Exploitation Of Minority Voices In American Theatre Throughout The 21st Century, Rhea Chhagan
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Theatre has been a practiced art form for many centuries; it has no beginning and no end, no preference for space or time, and no bias toward cultures and people. Specifically, theatre in America has been around for as long as its people have been. It is important to study the errors of American theatre, notably its mistreatment of minority voices, in order to create a healthy, inclusive environment and provide diverse opportunities for all. Racism and discrimination are subconsciously woven into almost every aspect of our lives, just as Critical Race Theory implies. Therefore it is essential to investigate …

Heartburn's Hidden Impact: A Narrative Review Exploring Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (Gerd) As A Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factor, Jacob J Gries, Bing Chen, Salim S Virani, Hafeez Ul Hassan Virk, Hani Jneid, Chayakrit Krittanawong
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a very common disease with an estimated 442 million cases worldwide. It is a well-documented independent risk factor for many gastrointestinal pathologies, however, its role in cardiovascular disease (CVD) is unclear, despite its high prevalence in patients with CVD. Although traditionally considered a causative agent of noncardiac chest pain, a common imitator of cardiac chest pain, or an incidentally shared comorbidity in patients with CVD, a number of studies have implicated GERD and its therapies as risk factors for CVD. This narrative review will explore the relationship between GERD and CVD, including medical and mechanical …

Autogenous Reproduction By Ornithodoros Turicata (Ixodida: Argasidae) Females And Vertical Transmission Of The Tick-Borne Pathogen Borrelia Turicatae (Spirochaetales: Borreliaceae), Serhii Filatov, Aparna Krishnavajhala, Job E Lopez
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Ornithodoros turicata is a vector of relapsing fever spirochetes in North America and transmits Borrelia turicatae to a variety of vertebrate hosts. The remarkably long lifespan of O. turicata and its ability to maintain spirochetes horizontally (between life stages) and vertically (to progeny) promote the perpetuation of B. turicatae in nature. Nevertheless, the reproductive biology of O. turicata is poorly understood. In this report, we collected ticks from a park within a neighborhood of Austin, TX. They were reared to adulthood, and male ticks were individually housed with females. We observed autogenous reproduction, which is the ability to produce eggs …

Staphylococcal nuclease Tudor domain containing 1 (SND1) protein is an oncogene that 'reads' methylarginine marks through its Tudor domain. Specifically, it recognizes methylation marks deposited by protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), which is also known to promote tumorigenesis. Although SND1 can drive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), it is unclear whether the SND1 Tudor domain is needed to promote HCC. We sought to identify the biological role of the SND1 Tudor domain in normal and tumorigenic settings by developing two genetically engineered SND1 mouse models, an Snd1 knockout (Snd1 KO) and an Snd1 Tudor domain-mutated (Snd1 KI) mouse, whose mutant SND1 can …

Self-Directed Versus Peer-Supported Digital Self-Management Programmes For Mental And Sexual Wellbeing After Acquired Brain Injury (Hope4abi): Protocol For A Feasibility Randomised Controlled Trial, H Wright, A Walker-Clarke, A Drummond, L Kidd, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Background Acquired brain injury (ABI) can lead to biopsychosocial changes such as depression, low self-esteem and fatigue. These changes can cause, and be caused by, sexual issues affecting relationships and wellbeing. Given the relationship between sexual wellbeing and mental health, it is feasible that supporting sexual wellbeing will benefit psychological wellbeing. However, neurorehabilitation is inconsistent and often fragmented across the UK, and psychological, sexual and social support are lacking. Research shows that self-management and peer-support programmes can improve quality of life, self-efficacy and psychological wellbeing after brain injury. This protocol describes a feasibility randomised controlled trial (RCT) of a digital …

Benefits of Ocean Observing Catalog (BOOC)
Marine heatwave data sets are calculated by NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information using Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST) data. The NOAA 1/4° OISST is a long-term Climate Data Record that incorporates observations from different platforms (satellites, ships, buoys and Argo floats) into a regular global grid. The in situ component of this input is critical.

Childrens are inseparable from using technology. Using this technology also has a negative impact, which is misuse of one's personal data. This threat is quite troublesome, especially for children, in the eyes of the law, that are considered as incompetent individuals. Unfortunately, Regulation Number 27/2022 concerning Personal Data Protection does not regulate and explain in detail the protections that children can get for the security of their personal data. Therefore, this research will discuss child regulations, sanctions, and compensation in protecting personal data; child rights provisions; and the comparison. The aim is to provide an explanation of what provisions have …
An Analysis Of Poverty Convergence: Evidence From Pennsylvania Counties, Angel Alcantara, Stephanie M. Brewer, James J. Jozefowicz
An Analysis Of Poverty Convergence: Evidence From Pennsylvania Counties, Angel Alcantara, Stephanie M. Brewer, James J. Jozefowicz
The Journal of Economics and Politics
This paper extends applications of unconditional and conditional β-convergence and σ-convergence analysis to poverty rates in a panel data sample of Pennsylvania counties during the period 1990-2019. Spatial structural breaks between rural and urban counties in Pennsylvania plus the possibility that Philadelphia County is an outlier are acknowledged to avoid spurious inferences. The findings support the existence of unconditional β-convergence in the pooled, urban, and rural samples with non-metropolitan areas exhibiting the greatest convergence. However, the largest conditional β-convergence is observed for urban counties, and this outcome is robust to the exclusion of Philadelphia County. Graphical evidence evinces a greater …

The Political Divergence Of Ohio And Michigan, Dominic D. Wells, David J. Jackson
The Journal of Economics and Politics
Ohio and Michigan are demographically similar states whose politics have diverged since 2016. This research aims to explain why these two Midwestern states have taken such different political paths in recent years. A comparative case study is used to examine a number of possible explanations. The results of this research show that institutional factors such as registration and voting laws, redistricting processes, and ballot measures have contributed to the political divergence of Ohio and Michigan. Further, data on policy preferences are compared to show that the differences between the states are not the result of different policy preferences among their …
