This study examines the role of water in binding equilibria with a special focus on secondary solutes (cosolutes) that influence the equilibrium but are not constituents of the final product. Using a thermodynamic framework that includes an explicit term for the release of water molecules upon binding, this investigation reveals how solutes may alter equilibria by changing the activity of the reactants, reflected in ΔG°(obs), and by changing the chemical potential of the solvent, reflected in ΔGS. The framework is applied to four experimental binding systems that differ in the degree of electrostatic contributions. The model …

A Mixed-Method Study Of Music Playing-Related Injuries In Secondary School Band Students: A Case Study From Schools In Bangkok, Sittiporn Wisuttipaet, Dneya Udtaisuk
Journal of Education Studies
Musculoskeletal injuries are commonly found among both professional and student. This mixed-method study will address the survey of self-reported injuries among student in secondary school bands in Bangkok. A convergent design was used to collect data for this study, in which the participants were 117 instrumental and marching band students. A questionnaire and semi-structured interview on perceived musculoskeletal injuries were administered. Descriptive statistics and content analysis were used to analyze the data. The results showed: 1) Physical preparations were used sparingly (moderate and low level) during pre and post rehearsal time. 2) During normal times, rehearsal was conducted five days …

Remote Teaching For Collaboration And Creative Problem-Solving Skills In Undergraduate Urban Science: A Case Study, Yuan Lai, Rea Lavi
Journal of Education Studies
Conventional urban studies pedagogy approaches rely on highly situated experience through site visits, ground surveys, and neighborhood engagement that require learning on the scene with social interaction. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted higher education worldwide, with undergraduate urban studies education being no exception. Such public health protocols have caused unfortunate disruptions but have also created unique opportunities for experimenting with new learning approaches augmented by information technology. This paper describes actions and reactions towards learning adaptation throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This two-week learning unit challenged instructors’ facilitation of students’ collaborative and creative problem-solving skills. The findings reveal how we (a) …

BACKGROUND: Visual biomarkers of Parkinson's disease (PD) are attractive as the retina is an outpouching of the brain. Although inner retinal neurodegeneration in PD is well-established this has overlap with other neurodegenerative diseases and thus outer retinal (photoreceptor) measures warrant further investigation.
OBJECTIVE: To examine in a cross-sectional study whether clinically implementable measures targeting outer retinal function and structure can differentiate PD from healthy ageing and whether these are sensitive to intraday levodopa (L-DOPA) dosing.
METHODS: Centre-surround perceptual contrast suppression, macular visual field sensitivity, colour discrimination, light-adapted electroretinography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were tested in PD participants (n = …

Higher Learning Research Communications
We are pleased to publish the second regular issue (Volume 13, Issue 2) of Higher Learning Research Communications (HLRC) for 2023. If there is a common theme that emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is the increased role that technology did and will continue to play in teaching and learning activities in tertiary education. The range of articles reflects the interest in digital teaching and learning and includes the use of scaffolded simulations, the influence of immersive virtual reality in the classroom, and gamification. In addition, guidelines around instant messaging are proposed that should continue the conversation around the ethical …

Purpose: Retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS) have varied treatment practices with regard to the use of radiation therapy (RT). Preoperative RT ∼50 Gy is commonly used, but the Surgery With or Without Radiation Therapy in Untreated Nonmetastatic Retroperitoneal Sarcoma (STRASS-1) randomized trial demonstrated no improvement in abdominal recurrence-free survival with preoperative RT. Dose escalation has been proposed to improve the efficacy of preoperative RT. We analyzed RPS treated with preoperative intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) to an escalated dose of 63 Gy at a single institution.
Methods and materials: Patients who received preoperative RT with IMPT with RPS between January 2015 and …

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a controversial and uncommon syndrome. Three different diagnoses can be made based on the compressed structure: arterial TOS, venous TOS, and neurogenic TOS. Diagnosing TOS, especially neurogenic TOS, remains difficult since a single diagnostic tool does not exist. Although this resulted in a lot of confusion, standardization of care and outcome improved daily care practice measures in the last decade. Current treatment algorithms consist of both conservative and surgical treatment approaches, which should be chosen depending on the type of TOS and extend of the complaints. Surgical treatment of TOS is performed via thoracic outlet …

BPJS Health experienced various challenges in achieving Universal Health Coverage / Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN), including a referral system. According to the 2018 National Health Account, curative spending costs reached 69.1%. The Case Mix Index (CMI) is a benchmark for hospital performance abroad, but Indonesian hospitals have not used it. In 2019, BPJS Health tested CMI in 30 hospitals. The research uses sample data from 2019-2020 based on province, hospital type and ownership. The methods used are anova test, independent T, linear regression and multiple linear regression. The research results show a decrease in cases in 2019-2020. The highest CMI …

Despite ongoing efforts and commitment to reducing Low Birth Weight (LBW) babies, globally, the incidence of LBW has stagnated. This study uses a combined factor of maternal and husband/partner education variables to analyze the complexity of LBW incidents. This research uses secondary data from the 2017 SDKI with a multilevel logistic regression analysis method to look at the relationship between the similarity of parental education and the baby's birth weight at the individual and community levels. The results of the research show that mothers who have husbands/partners with equivalent education and higher education (≥high school or equivalent) have a lower …

Health is the main priority of the Indonesian government in order to improve the health status of the Indonesian people in order to become a healthy, qualified and productive society. Health insurance is one of the programs held by the government to make this happen. Health insurance ownership from year to year continues to increase, but this increase is not accompanied by high utilization of health services, both outpatient and inpatient. The low utilization of health services raises the questions of how health insurance ownership affects the utilization of health service utilization. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the impact …
