“Pms Is Not Just A Cliché”? A Media Framing Analysis Of Pms And Pmdd In The New York Times, Gleyce Any Sales De Castro

Communications Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Journalists in health news are often responsible for creating, adapting, and editing scientific information for media consumers. This inherently involves some media “framing”, even if neither they nor the audience is attuned to it. Scholars agree that news media can increase awareness about health, as well as jeopardize individuals’ notion of health. Importantly, news outlets can also encourage social equality through education (du Pré, 2017). One such health news topic, severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), is emerging in journalistic discussion regarding its distressing impact upon women and assigned females at birth (AFAB). Analyzing a top-read newspaper …

A Parent’S Right To Obtain Puberty Blockers For Their Child, Megan Medlicott Dec 2023

A Parent’S Right To Obtain Puberty Blockers For Their Child, Megan Medlicott

Connecticut Law Review

Since Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned Roe v. Wade, many scholars have expressed concern over how the Dobbs decision may impact other privacy interests that previously have been recognized as protected rights under the Fourteenth Amendment’s Due Process Clause. The substantive due process right associated with a parent’s right to the care, control, and custody of their child, however, is situated differently in comparison to those rights presumably displaced by the Dobbs opinion. A parent’s right, unlike other rights recognized under the substantive due process doctrine, is objectively deeply rooted in our nation’s history and tradition, and is …

Disrupting Dominance, Cinnamon P. Carlarne, Keith H. Hirokawa Dec 2023

Disrupting Dominance, Cinnamon P. Carlarne, Keith H. Hirokawa

Connecticut Law Review

Climate change poses one of the greatest threats to human health and well-being. It also poses enormous challenges to the rule of law. As climate change progresses and climate impacts intensify, it becomes increasingly urgent to consider whether and how we are drawing upon the law as a tool to advance human adaptation to climate change. Equally, we must consider whether and how the evolving rule of law around climate change responds to existing patterns of social, political, and economic inequality. These are the questions this article engages.

As a starting point, this Article centers human vulnerability as a necessary …

Time Allocation Changes For Family Life Extension Educators: The Impact Of Covid-19, Brian J. Higginbotham, Joshua J. Turner, Stephen Duncan, David G. Schramm

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

COVID-19 has caused a shift in Extension educators’ daily routines and a transition to virtual programming. This case study analyzed time logs and interview data of Extension educators hired by Utah State University to facilitate fatherhood education programming. Comparison data indicate less time was spent teaching and traveling while more time was spent managing technology and marketing, following restrictions imposed by COVID-19. Educators recommended that aspiring educators should be made aware of expectations for virtual teaching. They also stressed that supervisors should look for these skills and technological competence in future hiring. Implications for best practices for future programming are …

Investigating The Microbiome Of The Eye And The Potential Of Probiotic Use In Optometry, Rachel Hartgerink Dec 2023

Investigating The Microbiome Of The Eye And The Potential Of Probiotic Use In Optometry, Rachel Hartgerink

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

While the eye was once considered free of resident bacteria due to its efficient immunity mechanisms, recent studies have determined that most healthy eyes contain a variety of microbiota. Many studies have been aimed at classifying bacteria that are part of the core microbiome of the eye and the conditions under which they differ. As with gut health, a dysbiosis of ocular bacteria could correlate to disease, which presents the idea of treatment with probiotics to help regulate the microbiota of the eye. This study utilized growth assays to determine a common probiotic’s effect on bacteria that can be found …

Characterization Of Ocular Surface Pathology And Tear Film Dysfunction Due To Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Judy Weng Dec 2023

Characterization Of Ocular Surface Pathology And Tear Film Dysfunction Due To Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Judy Weng

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

Untreated diabetes mellitus leads to development of microvascular and macrovascular complications affecting heart, nerves, kidney, and eyes. While the etiological mechanisms of diabetes-associated retinopathy and cataract have been well characterized, the time kinetics and the severity of diabetes-mediated injury to the ocular surface and its various components like tear film, goblet cells and glycocalyx, has not yet been investigated. These pathological changes can potentially cause dry eye and corneal injury including epithelial erosion, impaired wound healing and keratopathy. As the mainstay treatment option for the management of dry eye disease due to diabetes mellitus, artificial tears are frequently used. Therefore, …

Planners Vs. Non-Planners: Do Preterm Births Impact Future Contraceptive Use?, Jessie Moore

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Background: In the United States, 45% of all pregnancies are unintended and occur when contraception is not used or is used inconsistently. Among those pregnancies, 1 in 10 women will experience a preterm birth, which is defined as a birth occurring before 37 weeks gestation. Women who have delivered preterm are at an increased risk for preterm birth in future pregnancies and are encouraged to wait at least 18 months between giving birth and getting pregnant again. Among women who have experienced a preterm birth, the desire to delay future pregnancy or avoiding it all together often becomes a necessity …

New Paths Of Attacks: Revealing The Adaptive Integration Of Artificial Intelligence In Evolving Cyber Threats Targeting Social Media Users And Their Data, Larry Teasley

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

The intersection between artificial intelligence tools and social media has opened doors to numerous opportunities and risks. This research delves into the escalating threat landscape in a society heavily dependent on social media. Despite the efforts by social media companies and cybersecurity professionals to mitigate cyber-attacks, the constant advancements of new technologies render social media platforms increasingly vulnerable. Malicious actors exploit generative AI to collect user data, enhancing cyber threats on social media. Notably, generative AI amplifies phishing attacks, disseminates false information, and propagates propaganda, posing substantial challenges to platform security. Ease access to large language models (LLMs) further complicates …

Lip(S) Service: A Socioethical Overview Of Social Media Platforms’ Censorship Policies Regarding Consensual Sexual Content, Sage Futrell

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

The regulation of sexual exploitation on social media is a pressing issue that has been addressed by government legislation. However, laws such as FOSTA-SESTA has inadvertently restricted consensual expressions of sexuality as well. In four social media case studies, this paper investigates the ways in which marginalized groups have been impacted by changing censorship guidelines on social media, and how content moderation methods can be inclusive of these groups. I emphasize the qualitative perspectives of sex workers and queer creators in these case studies, in addition to my own experiences as a content moderation and social media management intern for …

A Review Of Threat Vectors To Dna Sequencing Pipelines, Tyler Rector

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

Bioinformatics is a steadily growing field that focuses on the intersection of biology with computer science. Tools and techniques developed within this field are quickly becoming fixtures in genomics, forensics, epidemiology, and bioengineering. The development and analysis of DNA sequencing and synthesis have enabled this significant rise in demand for bioinformatic tools. Notwithstanding, these bioinformatic tools have developed in a research context free of significant cybersecurity threats. With the significant growth of the field and the commercialization of genetic information, this is no longer the case. This paper examines the bioinformatic landscape through reviewing the biological and cybersecurity threats within …

Social Work And The Platform Economy: A Labor Process Theory Analysis, Lauri Goldkind, Barbara Pohl, Lea Wolf Dec 2023

Social Work And The Platform Economy: A Labor Process Theory Analysis, Lauri Goldkind, Barbara Pohl, Lea Wolf

Social Service Faculty Publications

Therapy is now available via digital platforms brokering relationships between practitioners and clients. Licensed clinical social workers contract with direct-to-consumer digital platforms to provide tele–mental health services. We employ labor process theory (LPT) to explore the interpersonal work of therapy as a labor arrangement, arguing that the core theory of LPT is useful for analyzing the overlapping clinical and material dynamics of conducting social work in online environments. We extend LPT analyses of gig work to the behavioral health field. Although platforms attract social workers by promising autonomy, the managerial controls that platforms exert and the emotional labor that social …

To help provide insight on the nature of patient’s seizures, Epilepsy Monitoring Units (EMUs) were developed. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between a patient’s length of stay against the stress and comfort experienced by the patient. The survey used to evaluate stress and comfort levels was the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit Comfort Questionnaire (EMUCQ), which was given on the first …

Isomorphic Trends In State Nil Laws, Andrew Godfrey Dec 2023

Isomorphic Trends In State Nil Laws, Andrew Godfrey

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

On July 1, 2021, the NCAA released their interim NIL policies, reversing its stance from prohibiting college athletes from being compensated for their name, image, or likeness to permitting college athletes to acquire compensation in return for the use of their NIL by third parties unrelated to the athlete’s institution. As such, state NIL laws, which have only existed since 2019, have become the primary measure on what is or is not permissible in relation to NIL. State NIL laws have already evolved repeatedly since their creation, thus causing confusion on what the state NIL laws permit and prohibit. These …
