Is The Declining Birthrate Really An Issue For The Economy?, Harsh Ramesh Pednekar, Theodore Lee, Darrion Chin
Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202
This study aims to explore the complex implications of declining birth rates on the economy, focusing on GDP per capita as a crucial metric, and aims to uncover both potential opportunities and challenges stemming from this demographic transformation using regression analysis. Using a quantitative methodology and secondary data from OECD.stat, World Population Review, and World Bank, the study explores the relationship between declining birth rates and economic impacts. GDP per capita serves as an essential dependent variable, and it accounts for control variables such as labour force participation, literacy, and education levels, child dependence ratio, and physical capital. Past studies …

Slapp Suits: An Encroachment On Human Rights Of A Global Proportion And What Can Be Done About It, Laura Lee Prather
Slapp Suits: An Encroachment On Human Rights Of A Global Proportion And What Can Be Done About It, Laura Lee Prather
Northwestern Journal of Human Rights
Freedom of expression is the underpinning of all other freedoms. Yet, increasingly, journalists, citizens, advocacy groups, whistleblowers, academics, and media organizations are being targeted and subjected to judicial harassment for informing the public about matters of public concern, denouncing authoritarian regimes, and exposing wrongdoing. These meritless lawsuits do not seek to right a wrong, but rather to silence and intimidate critics. They are known as “Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation” (“SLAPP” suits) and are on the rise globally. Because SLAPP suits are designed to inhibit ongoing investigations, stifle informed public debate, and prevent legitimate public interest reporting, they present a …

Interest In And Barriers To Online Esol Instruction For Adults During And Beyond Covid-19: Exploring Relationships With Sociodemographics And English Proficiency, Jessica G. Cox, Lauren Y. Chen, Harriet Okatch
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
Digital divides mean that marginalized groups such as adults who speak English as a second or other language (ESOL) are less likely to have access to online instruction. Higher levels of English proficiency are associated with better health and employment; therefore, access to ESOL classes is essential. We investigated how sociodemographics and English proficiency relate to adult learners' preferences for, and barriers to, online instruction of ESOL during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. Sixty-one adults completed a survey on their pandemic experiences, demographics, and ESOL classes. Analyses showed nonsignificant relationships between interest in online instruction and internet access, education, income, …
Analysis Of Phlebotomy Training Implementation To Reduce Lab Errors In The Clinical Setting, Sandy King
Analysis Of Phlebotomy Training Implementation To Reduce Lab Errors In The Clinical Setting, Sandy King
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The primary responsibility of a laboratory technician is to obtain patient blood samples through venipuncture as well as collect, transport, and store other clinical specimens. Poor blood collection can lead to erroneous and misleading results for the provider in addition to the annoyance of repeat testing for the patient. The lack of formal phlebotomy training provided to nurses could be contributing to laboratory rejections. For patients receiving lab services, how effective is an implementation of formal phlebotomy training for nurses compared to non-formal phlebotomy-trained nurses, in reducing failed lab results? The purpose and aim of this quality improvement project are …
Medication Overrides In Emergency Departments Defy Safety Culture, Jennifer Holt
Medication Overrides In Emergency Departments Defy Safety Culture, Jennifer Holt
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Medication errors are a growing problem in healthcare systems. Emergency Departments (ED) are especially susceptible to this. Automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) help promote patient safety, but ED nurses commonly override the safety steps built into that workflow. This quality improvement project aims to reduce the number of medication overrides in three rural emergency departments. Data was compiled for the six months before the education and then for the four-week time frame post-education. Education was developed concerning the effects of medication override and errors were presented to all ED nursing staff at the three facilities. Implementation occurred over four weeks and …

Palliative Care And Quality Of Life Improvement: A Benchmark Study, Rebecca Daniels
MSN Capstone Projects
This project provides an overview of the standard and regular implementation of palliative care versus early implementation of palliative care in patients with chronic or terminal illnesses. Palliative care is an essential component of healthcare that focuses on improving the quality of life and providing support to patients through holistic elements to patients and their families facing chronic and terminal illnesses. With evidence-based research, many articles have been published with implementation of early palliative care showing improvement in patient and even caregiver quality of life. This project includes evidence gathered from mixed methods of systematic review of existing literature, randomized …
Care Work, Jennifer Nedelsky
Care Work, Jennifer Nedelsky
Articles & Book Chapters
Care is routinely provided both as a commodity (paid care) and as unpaid care, usually by women. Virtually all care is treated as of low value, and care givers, paid and unpaid, are seen as low status. This devaluing of care and those who do it make care a major part of hierarchy and inequality. I argue that the solution is not more commodification (like wages for housework), but a norm of universal, unpaid care-giving. This would be made possible by a corresponding norm of limiting paid work to 30 hours a week. Part Time for All: A Care Manifesto …

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is highly immunogenic and high levels of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) have been associated with a better prognosis and higher probability to achieve pathological complete response. Here, we explore the potential role of stromal TILs level and composition as a prognostic and predictive biomarker in TNBC. 195 Tumor biospecimens from patients diagnosed with TNBC were included. Stromal TILs (sTILs), positive CD4/CD8 cells were evaluated. Differences in clinic-pathological characteristics according to immune infiltration were assessed. The predictive and prognostic value of immune infiltration was analyzed by multivariate models. Higher immune infiltration was observed in patients with …
Fostering Critical Thinking Through Simulation: An Integrative Review, Sarah Knapp, Raymonta Green
Fostering Critical Thinking Through Simulation: An Integrative Review, Sarah Knapp, Raymonta Green
Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects
Over the past decade simulation has become a staple of nursing education with increasing use during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both manikin-based and virtual simulation are used to increase the preparedness of nursing students for their roles at the bedside. With the increasing experience-complexity gap, it is important that students enter the workforce prepared to effectively care for patients. Simulation allows students to work with a patient scenario without the possibility of injury; in simulation, mistakes are opportunities instead of harm. This integrative review searched the literature questioning if in pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing students, do virtual simulation and …

Academic Outcomes Of The Covid-19 Pandemic: Awareness And Action, Tanner B. Howe
Academic Outcomes Of The Covid-19 Pandemic: Awareness And Action, Tanner B. Howe
Masters Projects
Research has shown that the online learning implemented during the COVID-19-related school closures had impacts on academic outcomes among secondary students. As schools operate in proximity to this event, it is crucial to investigate and understand those academic outcomes. Research suggests that mathematics and reading/language courses displayed negative academic outcomes for the period of online learning. Through this investigation, stress was observed to have played a major role during this period for secondary students and may have also contributed to the academic outcomes observed. This project seeks to raise awareness of possible student educational needs by shining light on the …

Advance Care Planning: Best Practice Toolkit For Improving Access To Advance Care Planning Using Telehealth Visits, Jae Jackson
Advance Care Planning: Best Practice Toolkit For Improving Access To Advance Care Planning Using Telehealth Visits, Jae Jackson
Student Scholarly Projects
Advance care planning (ACP) predominately occurs during a life-threatening crisis or during an inpatient admission. The primary care provider (PCP) is generally not the healthcare provider addressing ACP at the time of a crisis or during an inpatient admission. Being proactive in limiting ACP decisions with unfamiliar providers, uncomfortable environments, and increasing access to ACP discussions with PCPs are supportive reasons to utilize an ACP telehealth toolkit in primary care. Patients risk having ACP discussions with random providers, environments that don’t provide comfort when having such personal discussions, or not having the peaceful death they deserve without having an ACP …

Students’ Optimal Engagement In Efl Large Classes: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study In East Nusa Tenggara, Yohanis Nurak Siwa, Yazid Basthomi
The Qualitative Report
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in researching students’ engagement in English as foreign language (EFL) classes as students’ language learning achievement is shaped by their engagement in class. Yet, the study of students’ engagement in EFL large classes has received relatively little empirical attention. This qualitative phenomenological study aims at exploring how teachers perceive the factors boosting students’ optimal engagement and what strategies they use to boost students’ optimal engagement in EFL large classes. Ten university teachers with adequate experience of teaching EFL large classes in East Nusa Tenggara-Indonesia participated in this study. Semi structured interviews …

Experiencing Transformative Learning During Participatory Needs Assessment Of A Public School: Journeys And Arrivals To Relational Ontology(Ies), Shree Krishna Wagle Dr., Parbati Dhungana Dr., Bal Chandra Luitel Prof., Erling Krogh Prof., Niroj Dahal
The Qualitative Report
This paper discusses experiences from school-based needs assessment within a Participatory Action Research (PAR) project aimed at facilitating quality education in public schools of rural Nepal. Being often a first stage in the process of research-action, Participatory Needs Assessment (PNA) offers space for community members’ perceptions and attitudes toward their collective needs. In this light, this paper takes evidence from the first and the second authors’ Ph.D. experiences, under the supervision of the third and the fourth authors to initiate PNA of a school. Also, incorporating the reflections from the fifth author as a critical friend, it observes the political, …

Doctoral Students Balancing The Roles And Relationships Of Counselor Education, Isabel C. Farrell, Casey A. Barrio Minton, Amanda C. Dediego
The Qualitative Report
Aspiring counselor educators in Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP)-accredited programs must learn to be counselors, teachers, supervisors, researchers, and leaders. These roles can overlap, creating multiple complex relationships during their programs. To examine these roles, we conducted a constructivist grounded theory investigation of how counselor education doctoral students (n = 9) balanced multiple roles and relationships and boundary crossings. We utilized chain referral sampling and continued until we reached theoretical saturation. We used semi-structured interviews conducted via videoconferencing (Zoom) for data collection and coded the interviews using two main phases: an initial phase and …

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transitional stage between normal aging and early Alzheimer's disease (AD). The presence of extracellular amyloid-beta (Aβ) in Braak regions suggests a connection with cognitive dysfunction in MCI/AD. Investigating the multivariate predictive relationships between regional Aβ biomarkers and cognitive function can aid in the early detection and prevention of AD. We introduced machine learning approaches to estimate cognitive dysfunction from regional Aβ biomarkers and identify the Aβ-related dominant brain regions involved with cognitive impairment. We employed Aβ biomarkers and cognitive measurements from the same individuals to train support vector regression (SVR) and artificial neural network …

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Libman-Sacks endocarditis (LSE) is a characteristic but rare feature of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which can be found in association with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), exposing the patient to an increased embolism risk, particularly the occurrence of ischemic stroke. We present a case involving a 64-year-old man who was admitted for ischemic stroke accompanied by a fever. Cardiac investigation revealed mitral vegetations along with severe mitral regurgitation. The diagnosis of Libman-Sacks endocarditis associated with SLE and APS was made after a laboratory work-up showing negative blood cultures and positive antibodies. This case underlines the importance of early diagnosis for better management …

The Influence Of Body Mass Index On Ready-To-Wear Clothing Preferences Of Young African-American Female Consumers, Jung-Im Seo, Vadel Shivers
Faculty Publications
Although consumers’ body shapes are various, the sizes of bust, waist, and hips of ready-to-wear (RTW) are fairly standardized in the apparel manufactures’ sizing charts, leading to clothing fit issues for many consumers. Body Mass Index (BMI) is an important factor that has an impact on body image perception, but there is little research on the influence of the obesity prevalence on RTW clothing preferences. The purposes of this study are to examine the correlation between African-American women’s obesity prevalence represented by BMI and RTW clothing preferences such as store preference and clothing benefit sought as well as clothing fitting …
