Who Is Interested In Participating In Participatory Budgeting?, David Doherty, Raluca G. Pavel, Madeline Jackson, Dana Garbarski
Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Inequalities in terms of who participates in politics yield policy outcomes that fail to reflect the interests of the broader public. Because these processes fail to engage the full citizenry in political decision-making processes, they are also markers of an anemic civic culture. Advocates of participatory budgeting (PB) – a process implemented at the subnational level in thousands of cities in the United States and beyond that invites residents to participate directly in the process of allocating public resources for local projects – argue that it can alleviate these inequalities. They argue that features of the PB process make it …

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus is the site of a central circadian clock that orchestrates overt rhythms of physiology and behavior. Circadian timekeeping requires intercellular communication among SCN neurons, and multiple signaling pathways contribute to SCN network coupling. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is produced by virtually all SCN neurons, and previous work demonstrates that this transmitter regulates coupling in the adult SCN but is not essential for the nucleus to sustain overt circadian rhythms. Here, we show that the deletion of the gene that codes for the GABA vesicular transporter Vgat from neuromedin-S (NMS)+ neurons—a subset of neurons …

Moral Distress As A Predictive Variable Of Perceived Job Retention In Senior Nursing Students, Rebekah L. Barber
Moral Distress As A Predictive Variable Of Perceived Job Retention In Senior Nursing Students, Rebekah L. Barber
Honors College Theses
New Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) graduate nurses are leaving careers within inpatient healthcare facilities presumably because of moral distress related to the anticipated workload of registered nurses (RN). BSN curriculums are responsible for providing practical education through clinical instruction; however, many students experience inconsistencies in best practice recommendations. The inconsistencies predominantly originate between didactic nursing instruction and clinical learning within inpatient healthcare facilities. Using a cross-sectional descriptive research design, this thesis utilized the validated Moral Distress Scale-Revised (MDS-R), a 21-item instrument that assesses the frequency and intensity of moral distress experienced by healthcare workers. Student responses to the …

The Impact Of Trauma On The Behavior And English Language Arts Performance Of Middle-School Black Boys In An Urban Setting, Thelma A. Ramsey Bryant
The Impact Of Trauma On The Behavior And English Language Arts Performance Of Middle-School Black Boys In An Urban Setting, Thelma A. Ramsey Bryant
Student Theses and Dissertations
Black boys are exposed to traumatic experiences at significantly higher rates than other demographic groups (Graham, 2017). Black boys in urban schools face many challenges that often lead to poor life outcomes. These outcomes can be caused by trauma and can have an impact on their behavior and academic performance, especially literacy skills. Labels such as “criminal,” “aggressive,” “anti-school,” and “hardcore” are all used to describe Black males when they enter American schools (Hawkins-Jones, & Reeves, 2020). Lack of grade-level literacy performance is measured annually through statewide assessments that address English Language Arts (ELA) performance. While trauma for Black boys …

Stronger Regulations On Air Pollution Could Reduce Cardiovascular Disease Mortality Rates, Yue Sun
Population Health Research Brief Series
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States, but there are large disparities in CVD death rates across the country. Air pollution also plays an important role in shaping geographic disparities in CVD mortality, as air pollutants can become absorbed in human circulation systems, and cause inflammation, damage nervous systems, and trigger poor CVD outcomes. This brief reports the results of a study that used data on air pollution and from death certificates to estimate the association between fine particulate matter and cardiovascular disease mortality rates in the U.S. in 2016-2018. Results show that cutting …

Alarm With Care-A De-Implementation Strategy To Reduce Fall Prevention Alarm Use In Us Hospitals: A Study Protocol For A Hybrid 2 Effectiveness-Implementation Trial., Kea Turner, Molly Mcnett, Catima Potter, Emily Cramer, Mona Al Taweel, Ronald I. Shorr, Lorraine C. Mion
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
BACKGROUND: Fall prevention alarms are commonly used among US hospitals as a fall prevention strategy despite limited evidence of effectiveness. Further, fall prevention alarms are harmful to healthcare staff (e.g., alarm fatigue) and patients (e.g., sleep disturbance, mobility restriction). There is a need for research to develop and test strategies for reducing use of fall prevention alarms in US hospitals.
METHODS: To address this gap, we propose testing the effectiveness and implementation of Alarm with Care, a de-implementation strategy to reduce fall prevention alarm use using a stepped-wedge randomized controlled trial among 30 adult medical or medical surgical units from …

Digital Flourishing In The U.S.: Validation Of The Digital Flourishing Scale (Dfs) And Demographic Exploration, Sophie Janicke-Bowles
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
An increasing number of research studies have focused on exploring both the negative and positive effects of computer-mediated communication on individuals’ mental health and well-being. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive scale that measures an individual’s online well-being. The 25-item Digital Flourishing Scale (DFS) was introduced to measure the 25-item Digital Flourishing Scale (DFS) to measure individuals’ positive perceptions of experiences and behaviors in mediated social interactions. The current pre-registered study aimed to establish the convergent, discriminant, and concurrent criterion validity of the DFS and its five subscales (connectedness, authentic self-presentation, civil participation, positive social comparison, self-control). Additionally, …

Purification And Characterization Of L-Asparaginase Produced From Bacillus Sp., Sahar I. H., Zaid A. H., Milad A.
Baghdad Science Journal
The objective of this study was to isolate and identify the asparaginase-producing bacteria, then purify and characterize the enzyme in order to investigate their properties in the future. Fifteen local bacterial isolates were isolated from various sites in the city of Baghdad, identified by conventional morphological and biochemical procedures, and confirmed using vitek 2 methods, and submitted to primary screening processes for asparaginase production. For secondary screening, eight isolates with the greatest yellow zone ability on a specific solid medium were chosen. Bacillus sp. was reported to have the highest enzyme production (7.5 U/mg proteins). After 24 hours of incubation, …
