Journal of Health Research
Background: Undernutrition remains a fundamental public health challenge responsible for impaired growth, mortality, and morbidity in children under five years. This review aimed to assess the current evidence on child undernutrition determinants within the Southern African subregion.
Methods: The review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews. The search was conducted from electronic databases: PubMed, Cochrane, Google Scholar, Scopus, Embase, HINARI, EbscoHost and CINAHL. The search focused on studies on child undernutrition determinants conducted in the Southern African subregion and published in English between January 2000 and November 2022.
Results: The review showed that there …

Reaching The Hard To Reach: Effective Early Detection Of Breast Cancer In Low Income Communities, Sapir Flank, Sacha Roberts, Klaudia Koziol, Giulia Diraimo, Abbas Smiley, Maria Castaldi
Journal of Health Research
Background: Breast cancer disproportionately affects low-income communities. A handheld, portable breast scanner (iBE, Intelligent Breast Exam) offers access to breast screening to improve early detection rates for these populations. The objective of this study is to assess usefulness of a handheld breast scanner, iBE, in screening breast lesions as a public health initiative in communities with historically low rates of breast cancer screening.
Methods: Women presenting to inner city and suburban community center outreach events May 2021 through October 2021 were recruited. Women overdue for mammography or with positive clinical breast exams (CBE) and/or iBE were referred for mammography. The …

Journal of Health Research
Background: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) puts tremendous burdens upon affected patients and their support persons in Nepal. The health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among Nepalese persons with hemodialysis-dependent ESRD is not well understood. This study aimed to examine HRQoL and its predicting factors among persons undergoing hemodialysis in Nepal.
Methods: A purposive sampling was applied to recruit 106 persons with ESRD receiving hemodialysis at a tertiary hospital in Nepal between October and December 2021. The structured questionnaires included personal information, the World Health Organization Quality of Life instruments (WHOQOL-BREF), the fatigue assessment scale (FAS), the Hamilton depression rating scale (HDRS), …

The Effects Of Cigarette Price Incentive And Regulatory Policies In Taiwan, Che-Ning Yang, Yi-Fan Lin
Journal of Health Research
Background: Price affects the demand for cigarettes, but its direct impact on smoking behaviors remains unclear. This study evaluated the effects of cigarette price increases and non-pricing tobacco control policies on adult smoking behaviors in Taiwan, using data from national annual survey during 2004~2015 with 166,325 valid respondents.
Methods: We established mixed-effects models of logistic regression for each of the three dependent variables, “smoking,” “quit attempts,” and “cessation maintenance,” to characterize smoking behaviors. Socioeconomic and sociodemographic factors were also included in the models.
Results: Non-pricing tobacco control policies had no significant effects on smoking behaviors. Conversely, cigarette price …

Educational leadership
Collective efficacy has become a prominent feature in educational policy and practice with growing evidence that a strong sense of collective efficacy amongst educators leads to better outcomes for students. With growing interest in the importance of collective efficacy and how to cultivate it, the Collective Efficacy Tracking Tool was created to address challenges associated with understanding, diagnosing, and developing collective efficacy. This Framework describes the development of the Collective Efficacy Tracking Tool, defining collective efficacy in a way that it can be operationalised to leverage improvement efforts. The Framework and accompanying Collective Efficacy Tracking Tool provide a practical resource …

Investigating The Correlation Between Teachers’ Instructional Communication And Students’ Motivation, Reza Anggriyashati Adara, Josi Nur Panuntas Al Amin
Informasi
There is an anecdotal evidence that teachers’ instructional communication can affect students’ communication. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the correlation between teachers’ instructional communication and students’ motivation. The present study applies a quantitative approach by distributing a set of questionnaires to 52 participants in a senior high school in Bekasi, Indonesia. The findings of the present study indicate a strong correlation between teachers’ instruction communication and students’ motivation. In addition, the most salient factors of teachers’ instructional communication are feedback and organization of instructional units or teachers’ ability to deliver the materials. Regarding students’ motivation, the majority of …

Healthcare Access Among Low-Income Latinx Communities: A Culturally Sensitive And Intersectional Approach, Gabriela Meza
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Various factors, including immigration status, language barriers, age, and socioeconomic status, influence healthcare service utilization among the Latinx population. This study seeks to assess whether culturally sensitive care addressing intersectional factors enhances health access and outcomes in low-income Latinx communities (Purpose). The research proposes a longitudinal quasi-experimental study involving 400 Latinx participants aged 18 and above in low-income urban Los Angeles neighborhoods. A control group of 200 participants and an intervention group of 200 will be established, with the latter receiving culturally sensitive interventions when seeking care during the study. A pre-study survey will collect demographic information, health history, healthcare …
Spinoza And Enlightened Pleasures, Charlie Huenemann

Communication Studies and Philosophy Faculty Publications
Spinoza recognizes that worldly pleasures are not contrary to the life of the philosophical sage, but such pursuits must be carefully directed. He distinguishes between a joy that affects only some parts of the body (titillatio) and joy that extends through the body as a whole (hilaritas or "cheerfulness"). Titillation can be excessive, since it can blind us to our other needs. But cheerfulness cannot be excessive, since the whole body is improved at once. In his account of cheerfulness, Spinoza can be understood to be describing the life of a liefhebber, which is the Dutch …

The Spectrum Of Federal Funding's Impact: A Texas-Vermont Case Study, Nicholas Lupone
Washington Semester Program
This multivariable analysis of the Economic Development Administration’s allocation decisions examines the EDA’s post-pandemic impact through cross-state funding discrepancies. This research uses a comparative case study design focusing on two states, Texas and Vermont, that have different economic characteristics and receive varying levels of EDA funding. The key variables analyzed include the amount and programmatic category of EDA funding received, and the relationship between funding and broad economic indicators, such as employment statistics, economic output, and industry growth. Additional variables will be impact-based and include private leveraged funding, jobs created or retained, and industrial base pre- and post-funding. The study …

Effects Of Dimerization On The Deacylase Activities Of Human Sirt2., Jie Yang, Nathan I Nicely, Brian P Weiser
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
Human sirtuin isoform 2 (SIRT2) is an NAD+-dependent enzyme that functions as a lysine deacetylase and defatty-acylase. Here, we report that SIRT2 readily dimerizes in solution and in cells and that dimerization affects its ability to remove different acyl modifications from substrates. Dimerization of recombinant SIRT2 was revealed with analytical size exclusion chromatography and chemical cross-linking. Dimerized SIRT2 dissociates into monomers upon binding long fatty acylated substrates (decanoyl-, dodecanoyl-, and myristoyl-lysine). However, we did not observe dissociation of dimeric SIRT2 in the presence of acetyl-lysine. Analysis of X-ray crystal structures led us to discover a SIRT2 double mutant (Q142A/E340A) that …

Community Engaged Learning Final Projects
This research report presents an overview of the feasibility and reliability of a National Disability Insurance Plan (NDIP) in Canada. Several Global North countries are leading the way in disability legislation and disability funding in comparison to Canada's inaction on the matter. A National Disability Insurance Plan in Canada will have social and economic benefits for everyone in Canada. The report concluded that Canada is capable of implementing a NDIP and doing so is the right choice.
