Where Did All The Bed Bugs Go?, Lauren Friedman
Where Did All The Bed Bugs Go?, Lauren Friedman
Capstones
In the early 2000s in New York City, everyone was talking about bed bugs. The disc-shaped, bloodsucking pests had been a common domestic nuisance up to the World War II era, but in the decades since, they’d mostly faded into obscurity. That was until bed bug infestations, which are often psychologically distressing and sometimes impossible to overcome, suddenly became routine across the five boroughs, driving people from their apartments and stoking fear about everything from upholstered theater seats to thrift stores.
But then, just as quickly as bed bugs had invaded, they seemed to fade away. In a 2022 study …
Hospital Characteristics Impact On Left Without Being Seen, Anthony Roberts
Hospital Characteristics Impact On Left Without Being Seen, Anthony Roberts
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Emergency Department (ED) care is provided to patients for urgent and life-threatening emergencies. Inefficiency and overcrowding of ED continues to be a problem for the U.S. Health systems threaten the ability to provide care for the most vulnerable patients. The inefficiency of ED and hospital throughput creates challenges in being able to provide timely and effective care for ED patients. Prolonged ED wait times can be related to the availability of ED and hospital beds, inefficiencies in the emergency department, staffing, and other factors. Timely and effective care is important to providing high-quality care and decreases the risk of serious …
Single-Nuclei Resolution Kidney Profiling In Physiological And Disease Settings, Ruiyang Liu
Single-Nuclei Resolution Kidney Profiling In Physiological And Disease Settings, Ruiyang Liu
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The kidney is a critical organ responsible for the maintenance of fluid, electrolyte and metabolites in the body. Recent advancements in kidney research, including the use of single-nuclei RNA Sequencing (snRNA-Seq), have uncovered a complex landscape that encompasses both physiological and pathological conditions. The scope of my thesis covers two important aspects: (1) the exploration of kidney sexual dimorphism, (2) a detailed investigation of polycystic kidney disease (PKD). To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the molecular regulation of kidney sexual dimorphism, we integrated single nucleus RNA and ATAC sequencing (snRNA-Seq and snATAC-Seq) and Visium spatial transcriptomics (ST) data to build …
Covid-19 And The Italian Legal System, Laura Maria Franciosi
Covid-19 And The Italian Legal System, Laura Maria Franciosi
Journal of Civil Law Studies
COVID-19 hit Italy with particular violence. Then spreading around Europe and worldwide, the virus raised unprecedented issues requiring the implementation of urgent measures to prevent its propagation. This Article focuses on selected topics of the Italian civil law particularly affected by the rise of COVID-19 and tries to provide brief comparative remarks. Namely, after summarizing the most important events that occurred in Italy––originating from the discovery of the first Italian case of COVID-19 in Codogno––it outlines relevant social and legal scenarios. This Article also concentrates on commercial lease contracts, and subsequently addresses the legal implications of vaccination, with reference to …

Examining Policy Innovation Process And The Roles Of Policy Entrepreneurs: A Case Of Smart City Initiative In Khon Kaen, Thailand, Thitisak Duadsuntia
Dissertations and Theses
Innovation is a necessary process for public sector organizations and governments to adapt to social and economic changes. Innovation helps governments improve public service performance and address wicked challenges. Although the significance of public sector innovation has long been realized, how it occurs, and how it is influenced by contextual factors is not well explored. Particularly, policy innovation that emerges in an open and dynamic social system is understudied. Policy entrepreneurs mobilize policy change in their social systems, but their roles in a public sector innovation process still needs further investigation.
This study explores the policy innovation process and explicates …

No Trespassing: The Legal Origins Of Louisiana’S Water Access Dispute, Karly Kyzar Dorr
No Trespassing: The Legal Origins Of Louisiana’S Water Access Dispute, Karly Kyzar Dorr
Journal of Civil Law Studies
Since the birth of the civil law tradition, the public’s right to access and use running waters has been recognized and protected through written legal sources, statutes, and codes. However, although the State of Louisiana is often lauded as the “Sportsman’s Paradise,” the current judicial interpretation of water access rights has restricted the public’s ability to use waterways, in particular running waters, for recreational pursuits such as fishing and hunting. The purpose of this essay is first to highlight the trajectory of the development of the law relative to the public’s right to access and use running waters. The analysis …

The 2020 Revision Of The Puerto Rican Civil Code: A Brief Explanation Of Major Changes, Luis Muñiz-Argüelles
Journal of Civil Law Studies
Puerto Rico is with Louisiana one of the two United States jurisdictions having kept the civil law tradition as the bedrock of its private law. One of the last Spanish colonies, Puerto Rico became a US Territory in 1899. The Spanish Civil Code was replaced by a Puerto Rican Civil Code in 1930. A revision process spanned over a period of 23 years, ending with the adoption of a new Civil Code in 2020. After a presentation of the revision process, this report presents and discusses the changes and innovations in family law, property, contractual obligations, torts, and successions, also …

Where Do I Fit In God’S Plan? Mixed-Orientation Marriages In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Camron Angell
Student Works
Mixed-Orientation marriages (MOMs) are a complex reality of many Latter-day Saints. A MOM is when one or both partners in a relationship are either lesbian, bisexual, or gay (Kort, 2015). This paper overviews the effects on mental health and the sustainability of MOMs. Research suggests that MOMs have a negative effect on mental health, and LGB members are much less likely to get help from mental health professionals due to stigma and fear of rejection (Dyer et al., 2023; Legerski et al., 2016; McGraw et el., 2023). MOMs are also up to 30% more likely to end in divorce (Dehlin, …

Moving On: An Overview Of Approaching Trauma Through Dance/Movement Therapy, Eliza Barber
Student Works
Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT), an approach meant to facilitate holistic integration, has been historically associated with treating symptoms of trauma. Because it is a relatively new field, many questions still remain regarding appropriate interventions. In this extensive review of existing literature on the topic, I explored how DMT is applied in relation to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, culture-specific trauma and oppression, multigenerational trauma, and developmental trauma. Additionally, I delved into interventions with specific populations including refugees and young people. To identify the 26 items of literature referenced in this review, I conducted searches with appropriate terms on two scientific databases and filtered …

Whose Library Is It? A Youth Participatory Action Research Study Examining School Libraries As Culturally Sustaining Environments From The Students' Perspectives, Salamah Adjoua-Mullen
Theses & Dissertations
Traditionally, school libraries are assumed to be spaces of positivity and inclusion free from bias and discrimination. However, school libraries have not remained untouched by harmful school policies and state educational laws. Recently, new policies and laws have begun to restrict the role of librarians and library spaces are continuously being eliminated from school districts across the United Sates. One issue is the library profession has examined the library as a room but not the concept of what a library space is or can be. One approach to addressing this gap is by examining school libraries through the lens of …

Effect Of Timing Of Energy Intake On Blood Glucose And Body Composition In Women With Overweight Or Class One Obesity, Michael Wade Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Overweight and obesity has increased in the U.S. Unfortunately, this increases the risk of metabolic dysfunction, such as diabetes. Meal timing has recently shown promise as viable options to minimize the risk of overweight or obesity and metabolic dysfunction. The primary purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate the effect of timing of energy intake on blood glucose in females with overweight or class one obesity (BMI=27-35 kg/m2). This study utilized crossover design with two conditions counterbalanced in random order. Participants completed two 2-week 1500kcal dietary interventions: 1) a big breakfast diet or BB (50% of energy intake between …

INTRODUCTION: Machine learning algorithms are expected to work side-by-side with humans in decision-making pipelines. Thus, the ability of classifiers to make reliable decisions is of paramount importance. Deep neural networks (DNNs) represent the state-of-the-art models to address real-world classification. Although the strength of activation in DNNs is often correlated with the network's confidence, in-depth analyses are needed to establish whether they are well calibrated. METHOD: In this paper, we demonstrate the use of DNN-based classification tools to benefit cancer registries by automating information extraction of disease at diagnosis and at surgery from electronic text pathology reports from the US National …

Anesthesia Agents And The Risk Of Postoperative Delirium In Adult Non-Cardiac Surgical Patients: An Integrative Review, Narah Latortue
Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects
Introduction: As patients recover from surgery, it has been recognized that anesthetic agents are an external risk factor for the development of acute postoperative delirium. Postoperative delirium (POD) manifests as inattention with changes in perception or cognition, altered levels of consciousness, and changes in motor activity such as agitation or lethargy up to seven days after surgery. POD is linked to increased morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospitalizations and recovery, and persistent cognitive decline.
Purpose: The purpose of this integrative review was to determine which anesthetic agents decrease the risk of postoperative delirium (POD) development in adult non-cardiac surgical patients.

The thioredoxin (TXN) system is an NADPH + H+/FAD redox-triggered effector that sustains homeostasis, bioenergetics, detoxifying drug networks, and cell survival in oxidative stress-related diseases. Elovanoid (ELV)-N34 is an endogenously formed lipid mediator in neural cells from omega-3 fatty acid precursors that modulate neuroinflammation and senescence gene programming when reduction-oxidation (redox) homeostasis is disrupted, enhancing cell survival. Limited proteolysis (LiP) screening of human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells identified TXNRD1 isoforms 2, 3, or 5, the reductase of the TXN system, as an intracellular target of ELV-N34. TXNRD1 silencing confirmed that the ELV-N34 target was isoform 2 or 3. This …

Plants influence the abiotic and biotic environment of the rhizosphere, affecting plant performance through plant–soil feedback (PSF). We compared the strength of nutrient and microbemediated PSF and its implications for plant performance in domesticated and wild grasses with a fully crossed greenhouse PSF experiment using four inbred maize genotypes (Zea mays ssp. mays b58, B73- wt, B73-rth3, and HP301), teosinte (Z. mays ssp. parviglumis), and two wild prairie grasses (Andropogon gerardii and Tripsacum dactyloides) to condition soils for three feedback species (maize B73-wt, teosinte, Andropogon gerardii). We found evidence of negative …

The Impact Of Sea-Level Rise On Coastal Wetlands Using In-Situ Mesocosm Experiments, Landscape Modeling, And Traditional Ecological Knowledge Mapping, Kelly San Antonio
Master's Theses
Sea-level rise is an escalating threat to coastal wetlands as increased inundation and saltwater intrusion can lead to lowered productivity, decreased biomass, and plant death – and ultimately land loss. In chapter one, I detailed the interactive effects of inundation and nitrogen on two commonly found saltmarsh species, Spartina alterniflora and Spartina patens. I examined productivity and metrics to these stressors using a controlled mesocosm experiment in the western channel of the Pascagoula River, Mississippi. I found varying strategies of growth between species and differing responses between the short- and long-term. Overall Spartina alterniflora performed better with increased inundation …

Nitrogenase is the only enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of nitrogen gas into ammonia. Nitrogenase is tightly inhibited by the environmental gas carbon monoxide (CO). Many nitrogen fixing bacteria protect nitrogenase from CO inhibition using the protective protein CowN. This work demonstrates that a conserved glutamic acid residue near the C-terminus of Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus CowN is necessary for its function. Mutation of the glutamic acid residue abolishes both CowN’s protection against CO inhibition and the ability of CowN to bind to nitrogenase. In contrast, a conserved C-terminal cysteine residue is not important for CO protection by CowN. Overall, this work …

Cannabis-Induced Psychotic Disorder And Schizophrenia Diagnostic Comparison, Tyanna Brodhagen
Cannabis-Induced Psychotic Disorder And Schizophrenia Diagnostic Comparison, Tyanna Brodhagen
Honors Theses
Recent changes in cannabis legalization will have broad societal impacts for decades to come, not the least of which are the unknown consequences to neuropsychiatric health, particularly for adolescents and young adults. Cannabis-induced psychotic disorder (CIPD) is a controversial and poorly understood neuropsychiatric condition characterized by a psychotic experience brought on by excessive cannabis intoxication and/or withdrawal. Although CIPD is currently an uncommon diagnosis, the overlapping symptomology and comorbidity with schizophrenia indicates CIPD may be underdiagnosed. Some authors suggest the under diagnosis of CIPD may be correlated to physician diagnostic practices. This honors thesis constitutes a scholarly literature review and …

Purpose
Given the burden of depression in young adulthood, identifying protective early life factors is important. Protective factors like positive psychological well-being may be challenging to assess via conventional methods if early adolescents lack personal insight or informants disagree. We investigated whether essays written by 11-year-olds could indicate the presence of positive psychological well-being and predict depressive symptom levels in young adulthood, beyond informant reports of problematic behaviors. Methods
Data were from 4,599 individuals in the 1958 National Child Development Study who wrote an essay at age 11 about how they imagined their life at age 25. Coders rated essays …Case Study Of A 2016 Upward Bound Cohort’S Preparation For College, Kimberly Collins
