Early Management Of Nutritional Deficiencies To Reduce Musculoskeletal Disabilities Of Pediatric Populations In Africa, Kristin Freitas, Justin Gambini, Curt C. Stilp, Kara Roman, Ryan Mather
Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)
An estimated 1.3 billion individuals live with disabilities across the world, however many of these impairments are developed throughout childhood and could be prevented or treated with prompt and early intervention. In Africa, nutritional deficiencies are a common reason for disability in pediatric populations, often due to a limited supply of resources and diets high in grains and beans. This results in the development of genu varum and valgum deformities, which are most commonly caused by rickets attributed to calcium deficiencies in these areas. The children often go untreated, evidently causing musculoskeletal disabilities and further complications of osteomalacia or fractures …
Aiming To Connect: Do College Students Of Color Feel As Though They Belong In The Psychology Major?, Sarah Smith
Aiming To Connect: Do College Students Of Color Feel As Though They Belong In The Psychology Major?, Sarah Smith
Honors Program Theses and Projects
At Bridgewater State University (BSU), the psychology department consists of many students of differing backgrounds and demographics. Certain student demographics that can lead to marginalization could potentially influence a student’s connection to their academic program. This project aims to determine if students of color experience a lack of connection within the psychology program. Students in each PSYC 150 (Orientation to the Psychology Major) course at BSU are invited to complete pretest/posttest surveys. We assessed results of surveys completed from Fall 2020-Spring 2023. We hypothesized that students of color would report lower connectedness through measures of sense of belonging, challenges faced, …
Tikaram And Chandrakala Dhananjaya: A Collaborative Couple In Mathematics From Nepal, Deepak Basyal, Brigitte Stenhouse
Tikaram And Chandrakala Dhananjaya: A Collaborative Couple In Mathematics From Nepal, Deepak Basyal, Brigitte Stenhouse
Mathematics and Statistics
Within the history of mathematics and mathematics education in Nepal, Tikaram and Chandrakala Dhananjaya are relatively well-known figures for their two books Śiśubodha Taraṅgiṇī and Līlāvatī. This is despite there being almost no archival or manuscript materials offering a window into their lives: we have no letters, notebooks, diaries, or school records. Rather than focusing on either individual in isolation, in this article we present an argument for considering the Dhananjayas as an analytically indivisible collaborative couple in mathematics. Of the two aforementioned books, one is attributed to Chandrakala and the other to Tikaram; but in fact, both are translations …

Office of the Provost
Although great progress has been made in the diagnostic and treatment options for dyslipidemias, unawareness, underdiagnosis and undertreatment of these disorders remain a significant global health concern. Growth in digital applications and newer models of care provide novel tools to improve the management of chronic conditions such as dyslipidemia. In this review, we discuss the evolving landscape of lipid management in the 21st century, current treatment gaps and possible solutions through digital health and new models of care. Our discussion begins with the history and development of value-based care and the national establishment of quality metrics for various chronic conditions. …

Ai Empire: Unraveling The Interlocking Systems Of Oppression In Generative Ai's Global Order, Jasmina Tacheva, Srividya Ramasubramanian
Media Studies - All Scholarship
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to captivate the collective imagination through the latest generation of generative AI models such as DALL-E and ChatGPT, the dehumanizing and harmful features of the technology industry that have plagued it since its inception only seem to deepen and intensify. Far from a “glitch” or unintentional error, these endemic issues are a function of the interlocking systems of oppression upon which AI is built. Using the analytical framework of “Empire,” this paper demonstrates that we live not simply in the “age of AI” but in the age of AI Empire. Specifically, we show that …

The Gender Load: Case Assignment Differences In A University Counseling Center, Samantha Kristine Brumble Heder
Theses and Dissertations
Recent research has explored the unique case load of mental health professionals working in university counseling centers (UCCs) and is working to better understand therapist burnout. However, there is a gap in the literature surrounding therapist caseload composition and how this composition can impact the experience of therapists in UCCs. Specifically, more research is needed to understand how therapist caseloads might differ by gender identity of therapist. The current study explored this topic by looking at how therapist caseload varies by gender. Retrospective data gathered at a large western United States UCC from 2014 to 2021 was analyzed using Hierarchical …

Addressing Chronic Violence From A Gendered Perspective: Fostering People-Centered Approaches At The National Level (Case Study: Jamaica), Elena B. Stavrevska, Nattecia Nerene Bohardsingh, María Dolores Hernández Montoya, Tania Cecilia Martínez, Briana Mawby, Aliza Carns
Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
Violence has traditionally been viewed through the lens of armed conflict or specific, concrete violent incidents. However, it is necessary to understand that violence may be a chronic phenomenon— a persistent, deeply ingrained aggression affecting daily lives.
The report makes the case for reconceptualizing violence in the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and gender equality fields, building upon feminist conceptions of the continuum of violence to recognize that societal structures, systemic discrimination and even pervasive cultural norms can be sources of violence. This comprehensive view has significant implications for policy, demanding multisectoral strategies that address not just symptoms but the …
A Pilot Study In Healthcare: Salivary Cortisol Levels And Burnout, Hannah Oggerino
A Pilot Study In Healthcare: Salivary Cortisol Levels And Burnout, Hannah Oggerino
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
This pilot study investigated levels of burnout in non-clinical workers in a healthcare setting and compared them to salivary cortisol concentrations. Mashlach’s Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS(MP)) was used to evaluate self-perceived levels of burnout and saliva samples were collected to determine cortisol concentrations at four times during participants’ shift. The study was comprised of subjects exposed to multiple high-stress factors, including working in a healthcare setting, post-COVID ramifications, and demographic effects of Montana. The data revealed a statistically significant correlation (P-value < 0.05) between morning salivary cortisol secretion concentrations and mean survey scores. Significance (P-value < 0.05) was also found between the three dimensions measured by the MBI-HSS(MP): burnout, depersonalization, and personal achievement. The study discusses several limitations that should be considered when interpreting results. Findings do suggest that future investigation among this group is needed. Results may help guide interventions that support the mental health and wellbeing of medical support personnel, reduce stress, and avoid burnout.

Haiti’S Legal Claim For Restitution: The Political Context For The Recovery Of The Double-Debt, Ira J. Kurzban
Haiti’S Legal Claim For Restitution: The Political Context For The Recovery Of The Double-Debt, Ira J. Kurzban
University of Miami Inter-American Law Review
This article discusses Haiti’s efforts to seek restitution from France for the “Double-Debt” imposed in 1825. After Haiti gained independence in 1804 following a slave revolt, France threatened to invade and re-enslave the Haitian people if they did not pay compensation to French slave owners for their lost “property.” This became known as the Double-Debt, as French and American banks profited by converting the debt into high-interest loans. In 2003, on the 200th anniversary of Haitian hero Toussaint Louverture’s death, Haiti’s president Jean-Bertrand Aristide announced his intention to demand repayment from France. This sparked retaliation from France and Haiti’s elite, …

Restitution For Haiti, Reparations For All: Haiti’S Place In The Global Reparations Movement, Brian Concannon Jr., Kristina Fried, Alexandra V. Filippova
University of Miami Inter-American Law Review
Haiti’s claim for restitution of the debt coerced by France in exchange for Haiti’s 1804 independence has unique legal advantages that can open the door to broader reparations for the descendants of all people harmed by slavery. But in order to assert the claim, Haiti first needs help reclaiming its democracy from a corrupt, repressive regime propped up by the powerful countries that prospered through slavery and overthrew the Haitian President who dared to assert his country’s legal claim. This article explores Haiti’s Independence Debt, and the fight for restitution of it, in the context of two centuries of continued …

This note explores the complex relationship between climate change and Human migration, and the ensuing complications for the United States immigration scheme. Climate change can both directly and indirectly contribute to human migration, yet the United States’ regulatory scheme is unprepared for this reality and its consequences. Through analyzing several separate migratory events in Haiti, the specific failures of the United States status quo immigration systems become clearer. Further, the note will identify frameworks that could offer relief to climate-related migrants.
The War On Gangs: El Salvador’S Playground For International Human Rights Violations, Sanobar Valiani
The War On Gangs: El Salvador’S Playground For International Human Rights Violations, Sanobar Valiani
University of Miami Inter-American Law Review
International human rights law was developed with the underlying philosophy that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. However, since its development, we have seen a vast number of human rights violations persist with no recourse. The War on Gangs in El Salvador is just one example of this. This Note examines the history of the War on Gangs in El Salvador, the tumultuous political landscape that has spurred as a result, and how political efforts to address gang violence have been used as a tactic to strip Salvadorans of their fundamental rights and dignity. …

Analyzing Aberrant Dna Methylation In Colorectal Cancer Uncovered Intangible Heterogeneity Of Gene Effects In The Survival Time Of Patients, Saeedeh Hajebi Khaniki, Farhad Shokoohi, Habibollah Esmaily, Mohammad Amin Kerachian
Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research
Colorectal cancer (CRC) involves epigenetic alterations. Irregular gene-methylation alteration causes and advances CRC tumor growth. Detecting differentially methylated genes (DMGs) in CRC and patient survival time paves the way to early cancer detection and prognosis. However, CRC data including survival times are heterogeneous. Almost all studies tend to ignore the heterogeneity of DMG effects on survival. To this end, we utilized a sparse estimation method in the finite mixture of accelerated failure time (AFT) regression models to capture such heterogeneity. We analyzed a dataset of CRC and normal colon tissues and identified 3406 DMGs. Analysis of overlapped DMGs with several …

Role Of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone 2 And Its Receptor In Human Reproductive Cancers, Dr. Amy T. Desaulniers, Brett White
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH1) and its receptor (GnRHR1) drive reproduction by regulating gonadotropins. Another form, GnRH2, and its receptor (GnRHR2), also exist in mammals. In humans, GnRH2 and GnRHR2 genes are present, but coding errors in the GnRHR2 gene are predicted to hinder full-length protein production. Nonetheless, mounting evidence supports the presence of a functional GnRHR2 in humans. GnRH2 and its receptor have been identified throughout the body, including peripheral reproductive tissues like the ovary, uterus, breast, and prostate. In addition, GnRH2 and its receptor have been detected in a wide number of reproductive cancer cells in humans. Notably, GnRH2 analogues …

The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted foundational challenges in managing the public's health and the persistent health inequities in our communities. Within the private sector, companies witnessed how adverse health events impact the economy at large, their employees, and their customers. As a result, many companies have begun to see that they have a critical role in improving the long-term well-being of the communities in which they work and how health equity can build resilience. This recognition has driven many to action. Either on their own or in collaboration with established public health players, companies are deploying private sector points of view …

Mental health and trauma is affecting students in NYC schools; yet according to New York State comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s report, schools are not equipped to provide them with the support they need. For my practicum, I created three videos that all have one thing in common - NYC public school students and their mental health. Two videos feature DOE officials, and one features community members and a therapist. The videos were shared with community members and DOE officials upon completion.
