The Federal Government Must Revise Public Housing Policies To Protect Vulnerable Populations From Evictions, Caroline Grabowski
Population Health Research Brief Series
Over 100,000 Americans are now dying from drug overdoses annually, signifying that the goal of the 1986 Anti-Drug Abuse Act (ADAA) to end illicit drug use has not been achieved. What’s more, numerous statutes within the ADAA have created or worsened housing instability among people who use drugs and their families. This is because the ADAA allows public housing officials to use their own discretion when determining evictions and lease refusals and has disproportionately harmed individuals in public housing who did not participate in the drug-related activities that led to their eviction. This brief describes how the ADAA negatively affects …

Investigating The Relationship Between Smoking, Genomics, And Brain Imaging, Yoonhoo Chang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Cigarette smoking has been linked to adverse health outcomes, including several forms of cancer, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, and dementia. Despite the public health campaigns aimed at reducing tobacco use, the behavior remains prevalent, and its association with various organs is an active area of research. Recent studies showed that smoking behaviors have strong genetic contributions. Through genome-wide association studies, the genetic risk score of individuals can be created and used as a basis for more effective and precise healthcare solutions. Chapter 2 explores the creation of a polygenic risk score (PRS) for smoking cessation and its utility in two …

Best Practices For Serving Lbgtq+ Students In The 21st Century: A Systematic Literature Review, Mary Elizabeth Turner
Best Practices For Serving Lbgtq+ Students In The 21st Century: A Systematic Literature Review, Mary Elizabeth Turner
Library Faculty Publications
To best serve LGBTQ+ students in an academic library, it is necessary to develop a list of best practices. While there is ample literature on the topic of the needs of LGBTQ+ students in academic libraries and how to address those needs, there is no readily accessible list of evidence-based best practices for general implementation. To address this need, the author identified an initial pool of 210 articles published in library journals between 2000 and 2022. Of those 210 articles, 109 articles met all conditions for further review. A total of 21 articles within the review pool contained specific recommendations …

Overview Of Urinary Tract Infection Caused By Bacteria, Ahmed Talib Abdulkarem, Shaimaa M.S. Zainulabdeen, Saif Mazeel Abed
Muthanna Medical Journal
Urinary tract infections [UTIs], a significant public health concern, can be brought on by a wide variety of bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. The high recurrence rates and evolving antibiotic resistance of uropathogens constitute a serious threat to the financial burden of these disorders. Pathogens in urine can be detected using a variety of diagnostic approaches, which are broadly divided into laboratory-based and point-of-care [POC] detection methods. Many research institutions and companies working in this subject have strived to establish a rapid and accurate pathogen identification because traditional approaches may be time-consuming. …

Traffic Congestion Analysis Using Sir Epidemic Model, Zani Anjani Rafsanjani, Ratna Herdiana, R Heru Tjahjana, Yogi Ahmad Erlangga
All Works
In this work, we propose a mathematical model to represent traffic congestion in the street under some consideration. A congestion problem in a city highway becomes a critical issue since congestion at one point affected congestion propagation on the other points. We focus on the propagation of traffic propagation by adopting the concept of disease spread using the SIR model. We consider that the disease in traffic problems is congestion. Meanwhile, vehicles that enter the highway are susceptible to congestion. In contrast, vehicles free from traffic jams represent individuals free from disease. The SIR model can explain the spread of …

Fisheries Research Articles
High-intensity, impulsive sounds are used to locate oil and gas reserves during seismic exploration of the seafloor. The impacts of this noise pollution on the health and mortality of marine invertebrates are not well known, including the silverlip pearl oyster (Pinctada maxima), which comprises one of the world's last remaining significant wildstock pearl oyster fisheries, in northwestern Australia. We exposed ≈11,000 P. maxima to a four-day experimental seismic survey, plus one vessel-control day. After exposure, survival rates were monitored throughout a full two-year production cycle, and the number and quality of pearls produced at harvest were assessed. Oysters from two …

Improving The Quality Of Micronutrient Food Composition Data In Sub-Saharan Africa Using Predictive Analytics, Junior Mbuyamba Muka
Theses and Dissertations
High-quality food composition data are indispensable for decision making in several health, agricultural, and nutrition-related activities. Analytical data are the most accurate type of food composition data (FCD). Yet, most food composition databases (FCDBs) compiled in Sub-Saharan Africa only contain a small amount of analytical data collected from foods consumed in this region. Most of the data are either borrowed / copied from FCDBs collected in other parts of the world, calculated, imputed, or presumed data. Even with these alternative types, FCDBs in Sub-Saharan Africa have not reached a satisfactory level of completeness, as they still have missing data for …

Epidermal growth factor receptor variant III (EGFRvIII, the deletion of exons 2-7) is a recurrent intragenic EGFR::EGFR.E1E8 fusion that occurs in high-grade gliomas. The presence of EGFRvIII in other solid tumors has not been well characterized. We retrospectively reviewed advanced malignant solid tumor cases tested by a custom hybrid capture 610-gene next-generation sequencing platform from 2021 to 2022. EGFRvIII was identified in 17 of 4331 (0.4%) cases, including 16 of 238 (7%) brain tumors and 1/301 (0.3%) breast tumors. EGFRvIII-positive brain tumors were all glioblastoma IDH-wildtype, most with concurrent TERT promoter mutation (14 of 16), EGFR amplification (13 of …

Photolabeling of intracellular molecules is an invaluable approach to studying various dynamic processes in living cells with high spatiotemporal precision. Among fluorescent proteins, photoconvertible mechanisms and their products are in the visible spectrum (400-650 nm), limiting their in vivo and multiplexed applications. Here we report the phenomenon of near-infrared to far-red photoconversion in the miRFP family of near infrared fluorescent proteins engineered from bacterial phytochromes. This photoconversion is induced by near-infrared light through a non-linear process, further allowing optical sectioning. Photoconverted miRFP species emit fluorescence at 650 nm enabling photolabeling entirely performed in the near-infrared range. We use miRFPs as …

Extended-Synaptotagmin-1 And -2 Control T Cell Signaling And Function, Nathalia Benavides, Claudio G. Giraudo
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
Upon T-cell activation, the levels of the secondary messenger diacylglycerol (DAG) at the plasma membrane need to be controlled to ensure appropriate T-cell receptor signaling and T-cell functions. Extended-Synaptotagmins (E-Syts) are a family of inter-organelle lipid transport proteins that bridge the endoplasmic reticulum and the plasma membrane. In this study, we identify a novel regulatory mechanism of DAG-mediated signaling for T-cell effector functions based on E-Syt proteins. We demonstrate that E-Syts downmodulate T-cell receptor signaling, T-cell-mediated cytotoxicity, degranulation, and cytokine production by reducing plasma membrane levels of DAG. Mechanistically, E-Syt2 predominantly modulates DAG levels at the plasma membrane in resting-state …

ncreased breast cancer (BC) mortality risk posed by delayed surgical resection of tumor after diagnosis is a growing concern, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Our cohort analyses of early-stage BC patients reveal the emergence of a significantly rising mortality risk when the biopsy-to-surgery interval was extended beyond 53 days. Additionally, histology of post-biopsy tumors shows prolonged retention of a metastasis-permissive wound stroma dominated by M2-like macrophages capable of promoting cancer cell epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and angiogenesis. We show that needle biopsy promotes systemic dissemination of cancer cells through a mechanism of sustained activation of the COX-2/PGE2/EP2 feedforward loop, …
