Between Person And Place : Modernist Ecopoetics In The Work Of Muriel Rukeyser And H.D, William F. Pattee Jan 2023

Between Person And Place : Modernist Ecopoetics In The Work Of Muriel Rukeyser And H.D, William F. Pattee

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This project examines ecopoetics as a means of decentering the industrial and urban tropes so heavily focused on in modernist studies. Through the ecopoetics of Muriel Rukeyser (1913-1980) and H.D. (1886-1961), the natural world and its influence on human subjects prove to be as emblematic of modern literature as artificial places and spaces are. While ecocritical theorists like Scott Knickerbocker and Andreas Weber point to the natural world as a paramount guide to navigating social and cultural dynamics, the presence of ecopoetics in modernism is a particularly significant field. Rukeyser’s long poem, The Book of the Dead (1936) puts ecopoetics …

Selections From Jars Of Wilda Point, Christian H. O'Callaghan-Leue Jan 2023

Selections From Jars Of Wilda Point, Christian H. O'Callaghan-Leue

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

My creative thesis is titled Selections from Jars of Wilda Point. It consists of five short stories from a larger linked collection. These stories are linked through the theme of what and why the character keep what they do in jars or bottles and by the fictitious town in Coastal Maine called Wilda Point. The five stories are titled by what is in the jar and the year it’s taking place, “Keys, Year 1984” “Ghosts, Year 2008,” “Cross Words, Year 1951,” “Jude’s Life, Year 2014,” and “Crosswords, Year 2016.” They are character-driven, and each reflects the larger project for their …

Understanding And Targeting The Tph1-Serotonin-Htr3a Axis In Small Cell Lung Cancer, Yanning Hao Jan 2023

Understanding And Targeting The Tph1-Serotonin-Htr3a Axis In Small Cell Lung Cancer, Yanning Hao

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC), which accounts for 10-15% of all lung cancer, is the most malignant type that tends to grow fast and spread in its early stages. The 5-year survival rate remains low at 6% overall. Thus, new therapeutic methods and pharmacological targets for SCLC patients are urgently needed. We present novel data indicating that the synthesis of serotonin is upregulated in SCLC compared to normal bronchial epithelial cells and non-small cell lung cancer. Serotonin signaling plays a critical role in various physiological and pathological processes. However, its contribution to SCLC development has not been well understood. The …

Wisdom From The Center Of The Heart: The Life And Work Of Pamela Ayo Yetunde So Far, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Jan 2023

Wisdom From The Center Of The Heart: The Life And Work Of Pamela Ayo Yetunde So Far, Karma Lekshe Tsomo

Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

In recent years, Dr. Pamela Ayo Yetunde has emerged as a prominent figure in the Black, Buddhist, and queer communities. As I caught a glimpse of her amidst the excited crowds at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Toronto in 2018, a gathering of 10,000 delegates from 80 countries and nearly 200 religious, spiritual, and Indigenous traditions, her humble free spirit immediately captured my attention. Unpretentious, unaffected by the grandeur of the immense gathering, and unfazed by the power and prestige of the luminary figures assembled there, she flowed through the hallowed halls with confidence and grace. In an …

Migrant-Activist Evidentiary Practices In The Aegean Sea, Beatrice A. Abbott Jan 2023

Migrant-Activist Evidentiary Practices In The Aegean Sea, Beatrice A. Abbott

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

This project examines digital maps and images made by migrants and activists traversing or helping others to traverse the Greek-Turkish maritime border in 2015 and early 2016, when over a million people arrived to European shores, mostly by way of the Aegean Sea. These maps were made using applications such as Google Maps, Bing Maps, Maps.me, and WhatsApp and circulated on public Facebook groups and pages. Through a visual analysis of these digital artifacts, I look at how they can be read to witness and contest deadly border geographies produced through migratory policies and practices of deterrence. Further, I argue …

Hoarding Lifesaving Knowledge While Millions Die: The Political Economy Of Global Covid-19 Vaccine Apartheid, Kenneth Stancil Jan 2023

Hoarding Lifesaving Knowledge While Millions Die: The Political Economy Of Global Covid-19 Vaccine Apartheid, Kenneth Stancil

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

Coronavirus vaccines saved millions of lives, but experts estimate that the suboptimal production and inequitable distribution of shots resulted in nearly 3 million preventable Covid-19 deaths in 2021 and 2022 as well as millions of indirect deaths during the pandemic. These avoidable fatalities are inseparable from the grotesquely unequal vaccination rates between rich and poor nations. Dose hoarding by high-income countries contributed to vaccine inequality, but the “vaccine apartheid” inflicted on low-income countries reflects an even more fundamental injustice: knowledge hoarding by profit-maximizing pharmaceutical corporations—aided and abetted by wealthy governments—which deprived generic manufacturers of the right to produce additional lifesaving …

Ai Regulation In Health Care: How Washington State Can Conquer The New Territory Of Ai Regulation, Natalie Shen Jan 2023

Ai Regulation In Health Care: How Washington State Can Conquer The New Territory Of Ai Regulation, Natalie Shen

Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law

  1. The use of artificial intelligence both generally and in the health care field has exploded over the last decade. AI is now used in the health care field in areas like disease diagnostics, patient engagement, and administrative tasks. In disease diagnostics specifically, AI is being used to make life-altering diagnoses. This technology, however, does not come without its risks. Specifically, inherent bias is deeply rooted in the AI algorithms. This is because humans are inherently bias, and humans are the people creating the AI algorithms. The problem is, however, is that there are no federal regulations to mitigate the risks …

The Impact Of Single-Gender Middle School Dance Classes On Participants' Emotional Development, Social Development, And Academic Progress, Cynthia Poke Jan 2023

The Impact Of Single-Gender Middle School Dance Classes On Participants' Emotional Development, Social Development, And Academic Progress, Cynthia Poke

Doctor of Education Dissertations

Implementing single-gender dance elective programs may promote male students’ social development, emotional development, and academic progress and offset the negative preconceptions of males in dance. Schools that provide their students with single-gender classes vary in their motivation and include a range of learning opportunities that, combined with supportive school and classroom environments, are more likely to result in variable student results (Datnow & Hubbard, 2008). The schools chosen for this analysis were a district public middle school and a private academy that have conducted single-gender dance classes for males over the last few years. There is a need for data …

Scheming: The Consulting Criminal Of The Vices, Drew E. Craddock Jan 2023

Scheming: The Consulting Criminal Of The Vices, Drew E. Craddock

Theology Projects & Theses

Scheming is a multifaceted perversion of character that is often found in the person who has enough knowledge to understand what is good but has not inculcated the habits that would allow them to properly pursue a virtuous end. The schemer, acting from the vicious root of pride, is deluded into thinking that their self-serving ends are not only permissible but morally preferable. Scheming is defined by its five essential aspects: collusion with a capital vice, self-deception of the agent, operation from a place of vulnerability, movement of action from passion to malice, and ever-growing need for greater challenge.

How Cost-Effective Are Electric Vehicle Subsidies In Reducing Tailpipe-Co2 Emissions? An Analysis Of Major Electric Vehicle Markets, Tamara L. Sheldon, Rubal Dua, Omar Abdullah Alharbi Jan 2023

How Cost-Effective Are Electric Vehicle Subsidies In Reducing Tailpipe-Co2 Emissions? An Analysis Of Major Electric Vehicle Markets, Tamara L. Sheldon, Rubal Dua, Omar Abdullah Alharbi

Faculty Publications

We estimate the cost-effectiveness of plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) subsidies in reducing tailpipe-CO2 emissions in China, the U.S., and nine European countries. We find that the per-tonne cost of tailpipe-CO2 avoided increases linearly with the government-subsidized percentage of the PEV price. Costs are relatively higher in the Netherlands and Denmark, which subsidized high-priced PEVs including plug-in hybrids, and lower in the U.S., where PEVs replaced higher-emissions cars. Chinese PEV subsidies have a short-run static cost of up to $1,600 per tonne, far exceeding the social cost of carbon, suggesting that subsidies are more a part of China’s industrial policy than …

Assumptions And Understanding Of Success In Home Buyout Programs, Simon Manda, Alessandra Jerolleman, Elizabeth Marino Jan 2023

Assumptions And Understanding Of Success In Home Buyout Programs, Simon Manda, Alessandra Jerolleman, Elizabeth Marino

Research, Publications & Creative Work

In the US, the role and importance of voluntary buyout and property acquisition programs (buyouts) as a policy tool to relocate property owners out of flood risk riverine and coastal environments has increased since the 1990s, but how federal and other agencies frame success remains less understood. This review paper uses the case of an early implementation of a buyout program that encompassed a portion of Valmeyer to illustrate how success has been framed, and why. Analysis shows definitions of success by different actors emphasized acquisition of properties, construction of new residential and business areas including the incorporation of sustainable …

Opening Pandora’S Box: Comparing Airline Passenger Protection In Korea And Europe In Light Of Global Treaties, Pablo Mendes De Leon, Jin Choi Jan 2023

Opening Pandora’S Box: Comparing Airline Passenger Protection In Korea And Europe In Light Of Global Treaties, Pablo Mendes De Leon, Jin Choi

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

Passenger protection will continue to ask for attention. The involved bodies and persons include policymakers and legislators, media, courts, compliance departments of airlines, law firms, consumer protection organizations, and airports. All parties must announce the conditions for such protection on their premises. In 2020, around 50% of all cases in the Netherlands, around 4,000 to 5,000 claims submitted to the lower courts, concerned passenger protection in aviation. In the Republic of Korea (Korea), these numbers are more limited but still significant; that is, around 2,500 claims form the aggregate number presented to Korean courts and Korea’s Consumer Protection Agency.

The …

Ecologies Of Learning For Inclusive Pedagogy In Spanish Secondary Education, Inmaculada Orozco, Anabel Moriña

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

From the theoretical basis of the ecology of learning and inclusive pedagogy, this article explores the activities, resources and interactions practised by 25 Spanish teachers in compulsory secondary education. This qualitative study involved semi-structured and individual interviews. A progressive analysis of the data was carried out using an inductive system of categories and codes. The results show that the activities were varied and all of them put students at the centre of the teaching-learning process. The resources that stood out were technologies and peer support. Interactions were characterised by the need to nurture affection and get to know and motivate …

Measuring Australian Preservice Teachers’ Asia Capability And Perceived Readiness To Teach The Asia Cross-Curricular Priority., James F. Toohey, Peter R. Grainger, Michael Carey

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Preservice teachers are soon-to-be graduates expected to deliver the Cross-Curricular Priority ‘Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia’. Teachers of all learning areas are expected to teach about Asia, irrespective of their knowledge or capabilities in Asian contexts. The curriculum review has revised expectations for ‘Asia literacy’ in graduates. The changes de-emphasise cultural knowledge, and instead, promote relationship-building and intercultural understanding. This research identified 31 preservice teachers’ perceptions of their Asia literacy and preparedness to teach the related curriculum initiative. Grainger and Christie’s (2016) linguistic model was used to define and measure Asia literacy. Thematic analysis identified (1) how participants conceptualised …

The objective of the current study is to check the endolichenic fungal diversity within lichen genus Parmotrema. The study resulted in a total of 450 endolichenic fungi (ELF) isolates from 15 species of Parmotrema. Out of these, 73 sporulating isolates were identified using ITS sequences which resulted in 47 species under 23 genera. The phylogenetic assemblage of the fungi comprised Sordariomycetes (84.50%), Dothideomycetes (5.63%), Eurotiomycetes (7.04%), Pezizomycetes (1.40%), …

Centering Consumer Dignity Within Volunteer Operations, Meghan Loftus Jan 2023

Centering Consumer Dignity Within Volunteer Operations, Meghan Loftus

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Volunteerism has become so commonplace in the United States that it is often considered the third sector of our economy. To maximize output and stretch every dollar, many nonprofit agencies rely on volunteers to assist with the provision of their direct services. This unfettered access to their service population, without the same trainings and safeguards as implemented with paid staff, potentially create the opportunity for these volunteers to violate the dignity of the nonprofit consumer, either intentionally or unintentionally. The purpose of this study is to explore this phenomenon and determine if it is in fact a shared experience. Through …

Assessment Of Founders In Venture Capital Investment Decisions, Gregory Gerald Hennessy Jan 2023

Assessment Of Founders In Venture Capital Investment Decisions, Gregory Gerald Hennessy

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This manuscript documents a research project that employs grounded theory to determine what criteria contemporary investors in early-stage startups use to assess founders. One of the first questions posed by entrepreneurship researchers - even before entrepreneurship had formalized as a field - was, what criteria do investors consider when making investments in startups? Initially, the central concern was whether it was the founder(s) or the business model, often characterized as the “jockey” or the “horse.” From the start, it was generally accepted that the founder was the primary consideration, especially in early-stage ventures. Nonetheless, while business model considerations were parsed …

The objective of this study is to analyze Tai Dam funeral manuscripts called Kwam Bok Tang or Kwam Song Phi Khuen Mueang Fa. It is a comparative study conducted among Tai Dam or Lao Song in Thailand and Tai Dam in northwestern Vietnam. The texts reveal that Mueang Lo, Nghĩa Lộ in Vietnam, is the place of origin where the first community was established. It illustrates that the Khwan, the spirit or essence of life of the deceased, will be sent from the current settlement back along the route of migration to Mueang Lo before ascending to …
