Graduate, 1st Place: World War I War Front And Home Front: The Correspondence That Brought Them Together, Michelle Thole Apr 2023

Graduate, 1st Place: World War I War Front And Home Front: The Correspondence That Brought Them Together, Michelle Thole

2023 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

The First World War was the first time American soldiers had participated in a war at a distance from home that did not easily facilitate home furloughs. Although the United States and Europe are physically separated by more than 3,500 miles, the relative distance between American World War I soldiers on the war front and their families on the home front was minor; the correspondence between them mitigated the physical and cognitive distance.

Historians of the First World War have explored soldiers’ contact with their families while in training camps and the US military’s intentional cultivation of a balance between …

Effects Of Topography On Tornado Paths Using Navier Stokes Equations, Kayleigh Smith Apr 2023

Effects Of Topography On Tornado Paths Using Navier Stokes Equations, Kayleigh Smith

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

Tornadoes are relatively common in Louisiana with an average of 55 tornadoes per year. Predicting tornado paths has been extremely challenging due to the many factors that play into the formation of a tornado. According to NASA/ADS topography can have significant influence on tornado direction. The main goal of this research is to analyze tornado patterns and to determine if local topography has an effect on tornadic activity. Navier-Stokes partial differential equations will be used to model the data that is collected from the national weather service and a finite difference method will be used to solve the equations. Data …

The Fourth Amendment In A Digital Age: Defining Boundaries In Law Enforcement Surveillance Of The Home, Josh Hoffman, Jared Xia Apr 2023

The Fourth Amendment In A Digital Age: Defining Boundaries In Law Enforcement Surveillance Of The Home, Josh Hoffman, Jared Xia

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

As our country enters a new digital age, emerging technologies have increased the ability of law enforcement to monitor American citizens more closely. The tracking of suspects through thermal imaging, video monitoring, and cell phone GPSs are just a few examples of the unlocked potential now available to investigating authorities. When directed at the home, these technologies allow for unprecedented encroachment of our most intimate sphere of daily life. With this accelerating prevalence of technology in surveillance practices comes the need to reassess what boundaries the Fourth Amendment defines for our privacy. This paper explores the application of the Reasonable …

Building The Bridge And Crossing It: Using Digital Media To Connect Churches With Their Local Community, Andrew Blair Farley Apr 2023

Building The Bridge And Crossing It: Using Digital Media To Connect Churches With Their Local Community, Andrew Blair Farley

Doctor of Ministry

This project is designed to address the NPO statement “Churches need strategies to both engage in and measure the effectiveness of digital ministry and discipleship expressions that reflect the unique character and context of their physical gatherings.” During the discovery phase of this project, it was found that many churches want to use digital ministry methods that enhance their in-person ministry and not as a replacement for it. I have found this to be true both in my research and a pastor and pioneer in the field of church communications. The project outlined includes a website to act as a …

The Strategic Application Of Alternative Grading To Improve Retention And Enhance Equity (Spring 2023), Teshome Abebe, Michael Gillespie Apr 2023

The Strategic Application Of Alternative Grading To Improve Retention And Enhance Equity (Spring 2023), Teshome Abebe, Michael Gillespie

EIU Think Tank Reports and White Papers

Universities across the United States have been using the Pass/Fail grading system for a variety of reasons and in many different ways. There are so many uses of the system as there are universities.

In general, universities have used the Pass/Fail grading system to: help reduce stress and pressure on students; provide more flexibility in course selection and encourage students to explore and pursue interest without fear of damaging their GPA; reduce perceived discrimination and bias in grading, providing more equitable opportunities for all students regardless of race, socioeconomic status or prior academic background; and to improve retention rates by …

The Future Of The Workforce Depends On Generation Z: A Study On Generational Workforce Preferences, Laura Urgal

Honors Projects in Management

This research paper closely analyzes Gen Z in order to better understand their views, preferences, and expectations of the workforce. We are living in the era with the largest generational diversity to date. The idea of a multigenerational workforce has become an integral part of the workforce itself. With Gen Z’s coming of age and beginning to enter the workforce en masse – with them a unique set of skills, values, and expectations. It becomes of utmost importance for businesses and organizations to understand Gen Z workforce preferences as the demographic group is determined to shape the workforce. As Gen …

Partial Centralization In A Durable-Good Supply Chain, Jin Li, Xiaodong Yang, Victor Shi, Gangshu (George) Cai Apr 2023

Partial Centralization In A Durable-Good Supply Chain, Jin Li, Xiaodong Yang, Victor Shi, Gangshu (George) Cai

Information Systems and Analytics

There has been extensive research on the strategic choice between supply chain centralization and decentralization. However, most research assumes complete centralization or complete decentralization but omits the commonly adopted supply chain structure of partial centralization. With partial centralization, a firm owns a portion, but not all, of its partner. To help fill this research gap, in this paper, we make a major contribution by explicitly analyzing partial centralization in a supply chain where a durable-good manufacturer owns a portion of its downstream retailer. We start with a two-period model and derive analytical equilibrium outcomes of the supply chain and its …

Ex-Ante Regulation In Digital Markets In India: Some Practical Considerations, Gaurav Ghosh, Subhashish Gupta Apr 2023

Ex-Ante Regulation In Digital Markets In India: Some Practical Considerations, Gaurav Ghosh, Subhashish Gupta

Working Papers

Countries around the world have been perturbed by the business practices of big-tech firms, notably GAFA. Concerns have been raised about (i) fairness, (ii) contestability, (iii) innovation and (iv) transparency. Several countries have felt that they could no longer rely on standard usage of competition law which acts ex-post. They have felt the need to implement some form of ex-ante regulation to procatively address these concerns. Practices that have come under the radar include (i) self-preferencing, (ii) tying and bundling and (iii) Most Favoured Nation (MFN) clauses and across-platform parity agreements. There are also prescriptions on data portability, access and …

Raising Farmer Income And Sustainable Farming: A Roadmap For Agtech Evolution In India, V Ravi Anshuman, Venkatesh Akella Apr 2023

Raising Farmer Income And Sustainable Farming: A Roadmap For Agtech Evolution In India, V Ravi Anshuman, Venkatesh Akella

Working Papers

Significant venture capital investments are being made in agricultural technology (Agtech) start-ups in India. The main benefit of a technology-based solution is its potential for scalability. However, there is also huge uncertainty about how these efforts will pan out in the future. In this study, we present a framework to understand how the Agtech sector in India is likely to evolve in the coming decades. We argue that a trust deficit issue arises due to an information asymmetry problem between producers and consumers, causing a breakdown in the market mechanism – thus, hindering the flow of investments in business opportunities …

Hospitality And Questions In Classical Christian Education, Lynn Doto Apr 2023

Hospitality And Questions In Classical Christian Education, Lynn Doto

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

Christian parents continue to have few education options suitable for kingdom children. While textbooks and test scores hold prominent consideration for many Christian parents, neither cultivate a love of learning nor human flourishing. Rather, it is the language used in the learning environment that invites or repels engagement and learning. An expository exploration of sentence purposes and the type of sentence most commonly used by Christ to engage His learners reveals the power of the question. Appropriately asked, questions welcome learners to actively participate as well as to attentively listen. It is the workhorse of humility, for the question is …

The Individual Environmental Niche: Drivers, Specialization, And Geometric Configuration, Ben S. Carlson Apr 2023

The Individual Environmental Niche: Drivers, Specialization, And Geometric Configuration, Ben S. Carlson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The ecological niche is a central concept for understanding how species will respond to climate and land-use change. Although ecologists traditionally assess niches at the species level, emerging research shows that niche variation below the species level, for example, among individuals and populations, affects many ecological processes, such as population growth rates, community assembly, and ecosystem dynamics. Thus, niche variation may be integral to accurately forecasting biodiversity responses to global change. However, it is largely unknown whether individuals vary in their environmental niches (i.e., niches with axes for environmental conditions such as habitat or land cover) or whether this variation …

Essays On Labor Economics, Lucas Finamor Apr 2023

Essays On Labor Economics, Lucas Finamor

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Labor earnings account for almost the totality of household earnings for most families. In the United States in 2019, salaries and wages correspond to 68.3% of the total income reported to the Internal Revenue Service. Labor market choices are dynamic decisions often chosen in an environment with substantial uncertainty. Various risks are associated with and influence labor market choices. Business cycle fluctuations can have long-lasting effects, particularly when hitting individuals in key stages of their professional careers. During their time in the labor market, individuals are exposed to considerable employment, productivity, and health shocks. Even after retirement, individuals continue to …

Apollon’S Gift: Musical Therapy From Asklepieia To Bīmāristāns, Chihiro Larissa Tsukamoto Apr 2023

Apollon’S Gift: Musical Therapy From Asklepieia To Bīmāristāns, Chihiro Larissa Tsukamoto

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines the history of music’s use for healing purposes in Antiquity and the Middle Ages and explores the contributions of Islamic medicine on historical musical therapy. It begins in ancient Greece with an examination of polytheistic ancient Greek music and medicine, moves to the role of music in Byzantine healing institutions after the Christianization of Greece, and to its role in bīmāristāns during the Abbasid, Mamluk, and Ottoman periods. Ultimately, it seeks to describe how music was used therapeutically in ancient Greek, Byzantine, and Islamic institutions of healing. Several ancient Greek philosophers believed music could affect the body, …

Essays In Urban And Spatial Economics, Zijian He Apr 2023

Essays In Urban And Spatial Economics, Zijian He

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines the impact of emerging technologies on the reduction of spatial barriers and its consequent effects on consumer welfare, firm strategy, and regional development. Specifically, Chapters 1 and 2 investigate the rise of e-commerce, while Chapter 3 examines the implications of the High-Speed-Railway (HSR). Chapter 1 studies how the growth of e-commerce has altered consumer welfare and its distributional implications in the context of retail oligopoly. We use novel shopping receipt data to demonstrate consumer heterogeneity in online retailing markets, with households in rural areas and higher income brackets being more likely to shop online. To assess the …

Essays On The Provision Of Transportation, Lucas Conwell Apr 2023

Essays On The Provision Of Transportation, Lucas Conwell

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Chapter 1: Are There Too Many Minibuses in Cape Town? Privatized Provision of Public Transit Workers in low- and middle-income countries waste significant time commuting, partly due to gaps in public transit. In many African cities, privately-operated minibuses provide 50–100% of urban transit, at the cost of long wait times and poor personal safety for riders. Which externalities does the private provision of transit generate, and can policy interventions improve the market allocation? I build a micro-founded model of privatized shared transit subject to externalities in matching between buses and passengers, security provision, and road congestion. I then estimate the …

Essays On The Economic History Of The American South, William Steadson Damron Apr 2023

Essays On The Economic History Of The American South, William Steadson Damron

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The first chapter studies the effect of factory electrification at the establishment level. Between 1900 and 1930, the share of power in American manufacturing coming from electricity grew from 10% to 80%. Although electrification has been attributed with dramatic productivity gains, data limitations have constrained previous research to rely on aggregate data. Using a newly-collected dataset covering manufacturers in North Carolina in the early 1900s, I examine the effects of electrification at the establishment level. Manufacturers who electrified increased their productivity and output relative to manufacturers who did not. The effects on workers were mixed. While electrification increased average wages, …

Essays On Growth And Inequality, Trevor Colton Williams Apr 2023

Essays On Growth And Inequality, Trevor Colton Williams

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

I present three essays in growth and inequality. The first chapter considers the geographic distribution of research and development (R&D). A few cities perform a large share of R&D in the United States. The social return to R&D depends not only on the size of knowledge spillovers but also on the size of profits. To the extent that knowledge transmission is imperfect across space, these two objects vary across space. While prior literature has documented local knowledge spillovers, there is little systematic evidence on geographic variation in private profits from R&D. In this direction, I document a new fact from the …

The Influence Of Nature On Well-Being During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Views From New England Island Residents, Nicole Kras Apr 2023

The Influence Of Nature On Well-Being During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Views From New England Island Residents, Nicole Kras

Publications and Research

Researchers are beginning to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on island populations, but little is known about the experiences of the residents of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard in the Northeast region of the United States. In this study, islanders (N=41) provide insight into how spending time in nature influenced their well-being, especially their mental well-being, during this unprecedented time. For the majority of participants, the influence of nature on their well-being increased during the pandemic. Additionally, participants shared benefits of island living such as isolation from the mainland, as well as challenges such as food and supply shortages. …

Cultural Pride & Transmission: How Nonprofit Leaders Aid Filipinos & Shape Transnational Identity, Lauren Cristine Castillo Williamson Apr 2023

Cultural Pride & Transmission: How Nonprofit Leaders Aid Filipinos & Shape Transnational Identity, Lauren Cristine Castillo Williamson

Master's Projects and Capstones

Filipino identity is marked by its openness and diversity as part of the Asian & Pacific Islander community. Yet the unique history and experiences of Filipinos is underrepresented, particularly in discourse in relation to the diaspora of the Philippines. Though there is positive representation, very strongly in healthcare and media, there are great needs in the community that go unheard. Such adversity helps prepare Filipino leaders for the challenges they face when addressing issues in nonprofit work. The research in this project explores not only how Filipino identity is shaped, but also how Filipinos are bringing communal aspects of the …

Migration And Spatial Misallocation In China, Xiaolu Li, Lin Ma, Yang Tang Apr 2023

Migration And Spatial Misallocation In China, Xiaolu Li, Lin Ma, Yang Tang

Research Collection School Of Economics

We structurally estimate the firm-level frictions across prefectures in China and quantify their aggregate and distributional implications. Based on a general equi-librium model with input and output distortions and migration, we show that the firm-level frictions are less dispersed and less correlated with productivity in richer prefectures. Counterfactual exercises show that reducing the within-prefecture mis-allocation increases the aggregate welfare, discourages migration towards large cities, and narrows the spatial inequality. Moreover, internal migration alleviates the impacts of micro-frictions on aggregate welfare and worsens their impacts on spatial inequality.

What Do Americans Think About Federal Tax Options To Support Transportation? Results From Year Thirteen Of A National Survey, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Hilary Nixon Apr 2023

What Do Americans Think About Federal Tax Options To Support Transportation? Results From Year Thirteen Of A National Survey, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Hilary Nixon

Mineta Transportation Institute

This report summarizes the results from the thirteenth year of a national public opinion survey asking U.S. adults questions related to their views on federal transportation taxes. A nationally-representative sample of 2,620 respondents completed the online survey from January 31 to March 10, 2022. The questions test public opinions about raising the federal gas tax rate, replacing the federal gas tax with a new mileage fee, and imposing a mileage fee just on commercial travel. In addition to asking directly about support for these tax options, the survey collected data on respondents’ views on the quality of their local transportation …

The Geography Of Altithermal Subsistence Adaptations On The North American Great Plains, Ryan Breslawski Apr 2023

The Geography Of Altithermal Subsistence Adaptations On The North American Great Plains, Ryan Breslawski

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

On the Great Plains, the Middle Holocene (8200–5000 yr BP) was a warm period where foraging peoples expanded into new food resources and developed new food processing technologies. It is unclear precisely what drove these cultural changes, and environmental explanations tend to assume that climatically mediated causes occurred along latitudinal gradients, with the southern Plains experiencing severe water shortages and declining abundances of important resources relative to the northern Plains. A decline in one such resource, bison, has been repeatedly proposed as the mechanism that drove the adoption of new resources and technologies, with the most pronounced consequences at southern …
