Against The Tide: Indigenous Knowledge And Education For Humanization, Arturo Rodriguez, Kevin Russel Magill
Against The Tide: Indigenous Knowledge And Education For Humanization, Arturo Rodriguez, Kevin Russel Magill
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Power brokers and their market economies enforce education on a global level. According to the United Nations, the effects of global neoliberal capitalism cause human rights violations in all parts of the world, yet democratic countries scoff at these findings (Pogge, 2002 & 2005). People of the world continue to believe that tying minoritized students to existing structures and ensuring enculturation is the best possible outcome for all involved (Suárez-Orozco & Suárez-Orozco, 2015). That is, minoritized children are educated to ensure first-world countries produce a minimally educated and willing labor force. In this paper we argue the following: 1) power …

An Evolutionary Pathway For Coping With Emerging Infectious Disease, Scott Lyell Gardner, Daniel R. Brooks, Walter A. Boeger, Eric P. Hoberg
Zea E-Books Collection
Emerging infectious disease (EID) represents an existential threat to humanity. EIDs are increasing in frequency and impact because of climate change and other human activities. We are losing the battle against EIDs because of improper assessment of the risk of EID. This stems from adherence to a failed paradigm of pathogen-host associations that suggests EIDs ought to be both unpredictable and rare. That, in turn, leads to policies suggesting that crisis response is the best we can do. Real-time and phylogenetic assessments show EIDs to be neither rare nor unpredictable—this is the parasite paradox that shows the failures of the …

Rice-Med, An Integrated Assessment Model For The Mediterranean Basin: Assessing The Climate-Economy-Agriculture Nexus, Chiara Castelli, Marta Castellini, Camilla Gusperti, Veronica Lupi, Sergio Vergalli
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
In this work we update the regionalization and the calibration of the Regional dynamic Integrated model of Climate and the Economy (RICE) in its 1999 version developed by Nordhaus and Boyer (2000), with a focus on the Mediterranean countries. Our aim is to assess the impact of climate change damages on their main macroeconomic variables in a context where all economies are fossil fuel based. In addition, we extend the model by introducing the uncertainty associated with a possible future catastrophic event, triggered by the temperature increase and variation over time, following the approach of Castelnuovo et al. (2003). We …

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
The study aimed to measure the towards the environment pollution among university students, and in this a measure was prepared that contains students knowledge of environmental pollution and its effects, and students participation in facing environmental problems. The study relied on the sample social survey method by designing a sample representative of the study community consisting of 300 students at the University of Khorfakkan. A scale was designed to measure students awareness of the environment. To design the scale, a guiding program was relied upon to determine measurement criteria in modifying students behavior towards the environment. This program is composed …

A New Multivariate Product Kernel Functions Of The Beta Polynomial Family, I. U. Siloko, E. A. Siloko, S. A. Ojobor, Wasan S. Awad, E. Enoyoze, C. C. Ishiekwene
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Multivariate analysis of data is of wide applicability in data science especially in big data analytic due to the volume of concealed information to be analyzed. Accurate analysis of multivariate variables is pertinent because predictions from analyzed data are good statistical indicators for making helpful decisions economically and industrially. One of the statistical analytic tools for analyzing multidimensional observations is the kernel density estimator in data exploration and visualization. The functionality of the kernel depends on the kernel function and bandwidth which influences smoothness of estimates. Several kernel functions and bandwidth selectors exist in literature; however novel estimators are being …
The Methods Of Communication And Education Used To Train Forest And Fire Personnel Through The Swanton Pacific Ranch, Christine Brittney Johnson
The Methods Of Communication And Education Used To Train Forest And Fire Personnel Through The Swanton Pacific Ranch, Christine Brittney Johnson
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
California does not have a cohesive curriculum for educating and training forest and fire professionals. The Swanton Pacific Ranch Fuels Management Training Program is Cal Fire affiliated and provides online and in person training to assist in equipping fire and forest professionals throughout California with the necessary skills to be successful fire and forest practitioners and managers. An exit survey was offered to all workshop participants after the Swanton workshop concluded. The survey was answered by 331 Swanton workshop participants to assess the effectiveness of the training program, the educational practices used to teach participants, and what factors of a …

Evidence That Bivalve Burrowing Is Mediated By Serotonin Receptors: Activation Of Foot Inflation And Protrusion By Serotonin, Serotonergic Ligands And Ssri-Type Antidepressants In Three Species Of Freshwater Bivalve, Peter P. Fong, Rebecca Blaszczyk, Mary Butler, Jake Stergio
Biology Faculty Publications
Foot inflation and protrusion in bivalve mollusks is part of a sequence of events necessary for burrowing into the substrate. Although this process been observed after exogenous exposure to the neurotransmitter serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] and by some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) type antidepressants, no study has shown that foot inflation and protrusion as a precursor to burrowing is under serotonergic control. In order to elucidate the physiological mechanism mediating this response, we tested over 2,000 freshwater bivalves in three species by exposing them to 5-HT, two 5-HT receptor agonists, two receptor antagonists and five antidepressants. Fingernail clams (Sphaerium striatinum), …

Environmental Conditions And The Fertility Intentions Of Utahns, Mufti Nadimul Quamar Ahmed, Jennifer E. Givens
Environmental Conditions And The Fertility Intentions Of Utahns, Mufti Nadimul Quamar Ahmed, Jennifer E. Givens
Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)
One of the most important decisions a person may make in their lifetime is whether to have children. Many factors shape fertility intentions and outcomes. A better understanding of individual reproductive intentions can shed light on current fertility patterns, enable more accurate population projections1-2 and planning efforts, and improve our ability to address environmental drivers and implications.
Who Counts In Climate Resilience? Transient Populations And Climate Resilience In Boston And Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Johnna Flahive, Katsyris Rivera Kientz, Dlynzee Damas, Chris Watson, Evan Stewart, Ellen Douglas
Who Counts In Climate Resilience? Transient Populations And Climate Resilience In Boston And Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Johnna Flahive, Katsyris Rivera Kientz, Dlynzee Damas, Chris Watson, Evan Stewart, Ellen Douglas
Sustainable Solutions Lab
In the Northeast U.S., climate change impacts are predicted to increase and intensify unless global carbon emissions are reduced enough to mitigate impacts on local municipalities. As a result, thousands of people in Massachusetts are vulnerable to dynamic and extreme weather conditions, including temperature fuctuations and precipitation patterns, particularly those who are socially, politically, or economically marginalized. While decision-makers in Boston and Cape Cod municipalities must consider diverse stakeholder needs, one population is notably missing from most climate resilience efforts: people experiencing transience due to housing insecurity. Within the Commonwealth, there are two transient populations who are among the most …

This reading list gathers together literature focused on buffalo (also known as bison) to support ongoing efforts to restore this iconic species to its keystone cultural and ecological role. The books and articles compiled here are grounded in a wide range of academic disciplines and approaches, representing many distinct ways of thinking about buffalo within the realm of Western sciences. This is not intended to be an exhaustive account of what is known about buffalo, much of which is held in Indigenous knowledge systems and communities. This academic list is designed as a resource for those working towards buffalo restoration, …
