Introduction To Leadership For Complex Problems And The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Rian Satterwhite, Kate Sheridan, Whitney Mcintyre Miller

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"Alarming headlines referencing catastrophe and our perilous proximity to a tipping point from which we cannot return create a common refrain when it comes to climate change: the time to act is now—or has already passed—and if we do not reorient ourselves and our relationship to the world immediately, we are doomed. The urgency of the climate crisis is real, and with it comes a need to reckon with the deeply rooted systems and structures that have created this and other interdependent complex global challenges. However, our demise is not a foregone conclusion. Despite the doomsday headlines so common to …

Centering Intersectional Sustainability In Leadership Education: A Case For The Sustainable Development Goals, Kate Sheridan, Whitney Mcintyre Miller, Rian Satterwhite

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Sustainability leadership has the transformative potential of helping to center an array of skills and mindsets needed for leaders and leaderful organizations and collectives to successfully address the many interrelated and connected challenges of the 21st century. This article makes the case that the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a useful framework for integrating sustainability into leadership education and development broadly and can advance these needed skill sets and learning orientations. Leadership educators should consider centering this in their work in order to effectively prepare learners for the challenges of today and tomorrow.

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

This study aims to identify the characteristics of air inversions and Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5) in the city of Keene, New Hampshire. PM2.5 is a type of particulate pollutant with a diameter of less than 2.5 microns that exists naturally, and can be created through industrial processed and the combustion of biomass. The combustion of wood as a home heating fuel is considered the main source of PM2.5 in Keene. Meteorological factors were investigated by searching through quality assured meteorological record provided by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. Wintertime temperature inversions are of particular concern as they trap …

Community Resilience Yes, Junkyards No!, Ashley Valentin Gonzalez, Alberto López Pulido

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Analytical studies on environmental racism have focused on the interconnections between policymakers and environmental hazards in low-income communities to determine the degree of racial inequality. Yet, the majority of these studies ignore the arrival and permanence of toxic spaces such as junkyards and polluting industries impacting poor bayfront neighborhoods such as Logan Heights. We purport to examine this topic on two fronts. First, I plan to investigate the historical connection between the battle over greenspace between the Chicano Park takeover and the junkyard. Junkyards in Barrio Logan play a crucial role in how environmental racism came to be in this …

Global Goals, Local Future Stories: Unpacking Contrasts And Visions Of Circular Economy Activities In Neighbourhood Makerspaces, María Laura Ramírez Galleguillos, Damla Çay, Aykut Coşkun

IASDR Conference Series

Circular makerspaces have the potential to contribute to sustainable development goals (SDGs) by promoting circular-making activities such as reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling. However, community building is essential for maintaining a circular makerspace, which requires engaging the makers and future users in circular-making activities. In this paper, we argue that involving locals in the design of circular makerspaces can facilitate community building and support makers' sense of belonging to the space. We present the experience of involving citizens in establishing circular makerspaces in seven European cities as part of the EU-funded H2020 project, [Project Name]. We developed a technique, called …

Aqueous Logics: Towards A Hydro Feminism Approach To Sustainability, Beatrice Maggipinto, Valentina Nisi, Sarah Fox, Nuno Nunes, Tom Ainsworth Oct 2023

Aqueous Logics: Towards A Hydro Feminism Approach To Sustainability, Beatrice Maggipinto, Valentina Nisi, Sarah Fox, Nuno Nunes, Tom Ainsworth

IASDR Conference Series

In the popular imagination, sustainability is often synonymous with environmentalism, but it encapsulates much more. While environmentalism and conservation are often a focal point of sustainability efforts, so too are the people who impact the environment through their actions and associated activism. In this paper, we examine the discourse on sustainability, nature conservation and climate change. We focus, in particular, on the relationship between humans and the seas, where three main topics entangle: eco-feminism, ocean conservation and well-being. This paper highlights its implications for research on sustainability, nature conservation and climate change by outlining an aqueous logic — a fluid …

Provi – A Transforming Vision Emerging From Reflective Practice, Pierre Lévy, Caroline Hummels Oct 2023

Provi – A Transforming Vision Emerging From Reflective Practice, Pierre Lévy, Caroline Hummels

IASDR Conference Series

Over the past decades, design education has embraced notions related to self-directed learning, reflective practices, and lifelong learning. This perspective has led to the creation of various resources for design education and design practice, among which the Personal Development Plan which has played a central role in the ID Competence Framework at the ID Department of Eindhoven University of Technology. Over nearly 15 years of use, we propose an “updated” version of the PDP to strengthen its benefits from a programmatical and methodological perspective. The updated version, named Projected Vision (ProVi), is composed of five elements to structure a reflective …

Design For Social Imagination, Qian Sun, Mary Loveday Oct 2023

Design For Social Imagination, Qian Sun, Mary Loveday

IASDR Conference Series

This paper reports findings from a research project, ‘Connecting Roots’, funded by the AHRC UK. Based on the learning from delivering six co-creation workshops to local communities, this paper discusses how design can be applied to support communities to collaboratively imagine future possibilities of health and wellbeing. It sits within the context of scaling up nature and nature based activities (e.g. park runs, community gardens) as a non-clinical approach for better health and wellbeing. These workshops aimed to address the challenge of inequality of access focusing on Walsall, a metropolitan borough in the UK exhibiting some extremes of deprivation, a …

Reimagining Design Education: Renewal And Transformation, Elena Caratti, Silvia Ferraris, Silke Lange, Yingchun Zang

IASDR Conference Series

We live in a time when change is happening globally to an unprecedented extent. The awareness of the phenomena underpins the current discourse and research activities in design and design education. Many design educators understand the demand for change and are looking for new strategies to respond to it. The challenge is how to transform and renew design disciplines and its learning processes so that the next generation of designers can actively and responsibly promote change. Some educators are already focusing on the dimensions of change, namely, contemporary issues such as climate change and sustainable goals. Others are reflecting on …

Limiting Possibilities: The Imagined Futures Of Social Studies Teachers, Elaine Alvey Oct 2023

Limiting Possibilities: The Imagined Futures Of Social Studies Teachers, Elaine Alvey

Faculty and Staff

This paper analyzes the imaginings of sustainable futures and possibilities for action toward these imaginings articulated by social studies teachers. Participant stories about a day in the life of an imagined future largely leave intact major systems and discourses including those which have actively contributed to problems they identify including climate change. I argue that weakened imaginations and aspirations of possibility function to increase toleration for the most traumatic ecological tragedies both impending and already unfolding. Importantly for the field of social studies education, this data illustrates that while teacher participants consistently articulated desires to include issues of climate crisis …

Intelligence Versus Inferno: How Artificial Intelligence Can Be Used To Monitor And Manage Wildfires In Europe, Maxwell Feldman Oct 2023

Intelligence Versus Inferno: How Artificial Intelligence Can Be Used To Monitor And Manage Wildfires In Europe, Maxwell Feldman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Escalating wildfire occurrences in Europe, particularly in the southern Mediterranean region, are presenting significant challenges to socioeconomic, environmental, and ecosystem services. The increasing frequency and severity of these wildfires are straining resources and emphasizing the need for a better understanding of the relationship between suppression capacity and fire behavior in wildfire management. The following research addresses the urgent need for more proactive, knowledge-based, and technologically driven fire management strategies, throughout all four stages of wildfire response – fuel and land management, fire preparedness, fire suppression, and post-fire management. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly significant in climate change adaptation, especially …

Portugal To New Mexico: Investigating The Applicability Of Syntropic Agriculture To A Semi-Arid Continental Climate, Arielle Nathan Oct 2023

Portugal To New Mexico: Investigating The Applicability Of Syntropic Agriculture To A Semi-Arid Continental Climate, Arielle Nathan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Conventional industrial agriculture has numerous detrimental effects on the environment including high carbon emissions, pollution and overconsumption of water, soil degradation, and reduction of biodiversity (FAO, 2018). Large-scale alternatives are needed to combat these negative consequences and provide climate solutions. Syntropic Agriculture is a promising farming alternative especially in arid systems subject to degraded soils and desertification. New Mexico is a semi-arid continental climate in a prolonged period of drought and predicted to experience worsening agricultural conditions due to desertification, wildfire intensification, and exacerbated water scarcity. In an area with similar agricultural challenges, a project in Mértola, Portugal (Terra Sintrópica) …

Environmental Loss, Displacement, And Anxiety In Portugal: Analyzing News Articles To Differentiate Manifestations Of Environmental Distress, Robin Greene Oct 2023

Environmental Loss, Displacement, And Anxiety In Portugal: Analyzing News Articles To Differentiate Manifestations Of Environmental Distress, Robin Greene

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Expressions of environmental distress can take different forms, with different symptoms, causes, and treatments. Existing literature generally identifies three primary categories of environmental distress responses: environmental grief, solastalgia, and eco-anxiety. This paper explores these distinctions and identifies words typically associated with each category in Portuguese news articles using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). LDA is a Natural Language Processing (NLP) technique that groups words into topics and identifies connections between those words based on how often those words appear together in sequences. This paper uses a modified LDA algorithm called GuidedLDA to identify additional keywords within topics defined by a list …
