Stemnesscore: An R Package To Estimate The Stemness Of Glioma Cancer Cells At Single-Cell Resolution, Necla Koçhan, Yavuz Oktay, Gökhan Karakülah
Turkish Journal of Biology
Background/aim: Glioblastoma is the most heterogeneous and the most difficult-to-treat type of brain tumor and one of the deadliest among all cancers. The high plasticity of glioma cancer stem cells and the resistance they develop against multiple modalities of therapy, along with their high heterogeneity, are the main challenges faced during treatment of glioblastoma. Therefore, a better understanding of the stemness characteristics of glioblastoma cells is needed. With the development of various single-cell technologies and increasing applications of machine learning, indices based on transcriptomic and/or epigenomic data have been developed to quantitatively measure cellular states and stemness. In this study, …

Asphalt-paved Road junctions frequently encounter deformation and degradation challenges due to heavy vehicular traffic and varying climatic conditions, such as temperature fluctuations and precipitation. This study employs a multifaceted approach, incorporating a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model, ancillary machine learning techniques, and optimization methodologies, to address these challenges effectively. The primary objectives are the prediction and analysis of pavement deformation, the optimization of maintenance strategies, and the evaluation of road effectiveness. Our findings underscore the substantial contribution of heavy vehicles to road erosion and the profound impact of vehicular retention and braking at intersections. A Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model is utilized …

Infernal Symbioses: Reading Dante’S Inferno In The Chthulucene, Rawitawan Sophonpanich
Infernal Symbioses: Reading Dante’S Inferno In The Chthulucene, Rawitawan Sophonpanich
Journal of Letters
This article explores the possibility of foregrounding Dante’s Inferno from the epic La Divina Commedia in this day and age of environmental crises. This catastrophic state has androgenic origins and has been labeled by climate scientists as the “Anthropocene” – a new geological era marked by the ways in which humanity has irrevocably altered the earth system. Nevertheless, Donna Haraway has voiced her opposition against this classification, postulating that it contains too much nihilistic and pessimistic connotations that function to discourage humans from doing the work necessary to alleviate the crises. Haraway therefore proposes “Chthulucene” to denote the temporally and …

The changes in Thailand’s electoral system over a period of more than 20 years have influenced the use of language that reflects the perspectives of people in Thai society. This article aims to (1) study Thai political metaphors before the 2023 elections in political analysis articles in the ThaiRath online newspaper between October 1 and December 31, 2022, and (2) compare Thai political metaphors before the 2023 elections with those in 2001 and 2007 using a conceptual metaphor framework for comparing one thing to another through a process of mapping meaning from a source domain to a target domain, as …
Chinese Ecological Attitudes In The Modern Era And Foundations Of Taoist Philosophy: A Case Study Of The “Biodiversity Conservation In China” Whitepaper, Yao Siqi
Journal of Letters
This paper analyzed (1) the language representations of attitude resources in the “Biodiversity Conservation in China” whitepaper based on Martin and White’s appraisal theory, and (2) hidden modern Chinese eco-attitudes as reflected in the whitepaper. The findings were that the whitepaper used all three attitude subcategories: (1) judgment, (2) appreciation, and (3) affect, in decreasing order of significance. Judgment and appreciation were highly proportional and positive, while distribution of affect was minimal. Chinese eco-attitudes in the new era, as reflected in the white paper, may be considered from three perspectives: overall outlook, equality and future perspective. Ecological awareness of respecting …

A Case For The Negotiation Of Agency By Disenfranchised Subjects In Contemporary Nigerian Literature, Chinelo Eneh
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis diverges from conventional narratives that predominantly focus on the challenges faced by women and children in Nigeria, particularly in the aftermath of colonial rule. While existing scholarship tends to underscore the myriad difficulties and constraints experienced by these individuals, this study takes a departure from such well-trodden paths. Instead, it endeavors to bring to the forefront the endeavors undertaken by these subjects to assert a measure of agency and autonomy, specifically during two tumultuous periods in Nigeria's history. Through a focused examination of Chimamanda Adichie's "Half of A Yellow Sun" and Adaobi Nwaubani's "Buried Beneath the Baobab Tree," …

Psychology Faculty Publications
Trichotillomania, also known as Hair-Pulling Disorder, is characterized by recurrent pulling out of one’s hair over brief episodes or sustained periods of time and results in hair loss. ACT-enhanced behavior therapy (A-EBT) has been shown to be an effective approach in the treatment of trichotillomania by promoting psychological flexibility around hair pulling urges and teaching stimulus control and habit reversal training. However, there is limited support of A-EBT for clients with an ethnic minority identity. This case report focuses on an adult, Hispanic female client, Luna (pseudonym), who received eight sessions of A-EBT for the treatment of trichotillomania. At post-treatment, …

The Effect Of Gameplay On The Creative Self-Efficacy Of Educators In Hypothetical Classroom Management Situations, Weihsuan Lo, Erin C. Wachter, Chelsea R. Miller
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
In an ever-changing emotional, psychological, and physically developing world of education, it is important for educators to adapt creative skills to meet learners' needs. It is paramount for educators to develop creative skills to meet the needs of their learners and demonstrate effective classroom management. There is a gap between preservice teacher preparation and the reality of the day-to-day demands of educators. Game-based learning can provide a measure to fill that gap by providing a simulated experience for preservice teachers to encounter possible challenging scenarios. This concept of educational gameplay uses interactive learning that can improve the classroom response to …

A Sociology Approach: Dance can be a useful tool for teaching students about culture and community. Through the language of Dance and Music (Caribbean Dance), context is given to social facts, which engages and informs students about such social issues as history, Colonialism, social class, gender, race/ethnicity, and social justice. The added bonus of using Dance as a lens is that it involves active, embodied learning (Dewey, English, Mead), making the material more memorable, meaningful, and relevant to the learner. A Communicative Approach (Task-based Learning Activity) & Language for Specific Purposes:Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is a derivative of the Communicative Approach …

Case Report And Literature Review Of An Atypical Polymyalgia Rheumatica And Its Management, Saad Bilal Ahmed, Saara Ahmad, Hanmei Pan
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a systemic inflammatory disease of the elderly population that increases in incidence as age advances. It is characterised by the sudden or sub-acute onset of symptoms affecting the shoulder and pelvic girdles, often accompanied by constitutional symptoms. Due to the lack of consensual diagnostic criteria and specific laboratory or radiological investigations for PMR, its diagnosis can be very challenging, particularly because it can be mimicked or masked by other geriatric syndromes. PMR responds well to glucocorticoid treatment, but if left untreated, can lead to morbidity and poor quality of life. We present the case of an …

Writing Centers & The Dark Warehouse University: Generative Ai, Three Human Advantages, Joe Essid
Interdisciplinary Journal of Leadership Studies
Institutions are scrambling, at an unaccustomed pace, to adapt to generative artificial intelligence. While justified concerns focus on plagiarism, the nature of student learning, and changes to assignments, recent scholarship has largely ignored the potential for faculty and staff unemployment that may accompany acceptance and deployment of the new technology. As we ponder seismic changes in higher education, one voice should join, indeed lead, campus discussions. Writing center professionals have proven adept at weathering technological changes, budget cuts, administrative big ideas, and professional marginalization for more than half a century. Early on, centers were sometimes dismissed as mere “fix-it shops” …

Protected areas comprise of some of the most precious and sensitive habitats on the planet. However, many of these areas are also used as major tourism and leisure destinations. Managed well, these areas can safeguard biodiversity conservation with multiple positive benefits to local populations and economies. Yet, where not carefully planned and managed, there has long been recognition of the possibility of negative impacts on natural environments and social consequences for local communities. This chapter considers such impacts experienced in Dorset, UK, post the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It reviews how effective some of the most commonly used tools …

“Any”, James J. Brudney, Ethan J. Leib
BYU Law Review
Our statute books use the word “any” ubiquitously in coverage and exclusion provisions. As any reader of the Supreme Court’s statutory interpretation docket would know, a large number of cases turn on the contested application of this so-called universal quantifier. It is hard to make sense of the jurisprudence of “any.” And any effort to offer a unified approach—knowing precisely when its scope is expansive (along the “literal-meaning” lines of “every” and “all”) or confining (having a contained domain related to properties provided by contextual cues)—is likely to fail. This Article examines legislative drafting manuals, surveys centuries of Court decisions, …
Byte A Carrot For Change: Uprooting Problems In Data Privacy Regulations, Sarah Terry
Byte A Carrot For Change: Uprooting Problems In Data Privacy Regulations, Sarah Terry
BYU Law Review
There is a growing gap between technology advancement and a lagging regulatory system. This is particularly problematic in consumer data privacy regulating. Companies hold collected consumer data and determine its use largely without accountability. As a result, ethical questions that carry society-shaping impact are answered in-house, under the influence of groupthink, and are withheld from anyone else weighing in.
This Note poses a solution that would address multiple data privacy regulation issues. Namely, an incentive approach would help even out the information-imbalanced system. Incentives are used as tools throughout intellectual property law to foster commercial progress, discourage trade secrets, and …

Appealing Magna Carta, Thomas J. Mcsweeney

In 1999, Professor Richard Helmholz published Magna Carta and the Ius Commune, in which he argued that some of the ideas and language found in Magna Carta provide evidence that the early common law was engaging with the ius commune, the ancestor of modern civil law traditions. This Essay examines one piece of evidence highlighted by Helmholz and more recently by Professor Charles Donahue: that the Articles of the Barons, a preparatory document for Magna Carta, uses a phrase borrowed from canon law, appellatione remota (without possibility of appeal). Helmholz and Donahue pointed to its use as evidence that …

Employing An Abolitionist, Critical Race Pedagogy In Cs: Centering The Voices, Experiences And Technological Innovations Of Black Youth, Tiera Tanksley
Journal of Computer Science Integration
This paper proposes a pedagogical extension of culturally responsive praxis called abolitionist, critical race pedagogy in CS. To showcase the power and potentiality of this pedagogy, this paper examines the experiences of 2 cohorts of Black high school students (n = 30) who participated in a critical race technology course that was taught during the dual pandemic of COVID-19 and anti-Black racism. The goal of this summer course was to employ an abolitionist, critical race pedagogy in CS to foster Black students’ ability to critically examine the ubiquity of anti-Black racism within the socio-technical architectures (e.g. code, data, algorithms and …
