"When we proposed this special issue, we sought to illuminate the conceptual and embodied contact zones we discuss above. Tensions that, for us, were centered by scholars and attendees who participated in any of the three CCCC Feminist Workshop between 2021-2023 when the majority of the editors of this special issue co-chaired. During that time frame, CCCC’s shifted from in-person to fully online to hybrid due to COVID-19 and attempted to move toward more national and international attendance inclusivity. With this organizational backdrop, it was during the 2021 CCCC Feminist Workshop that we grappled with coalition as a commonplace."
Integration Taxes And Gestural Integration: Access And Limits To Integration Through New Citizens’ Participation In State-Sponsored Grassroots Volunteerism In Singapore, George Wong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Integration is a contested topic in Singapore’s public discourse. One such area is integration through state-sponsored grassroots community volunteerism. Little is however known about such experiences of grassroots volunteerism to integration outcomes. This paper addresses the gap by exploring how new citizen and permanent resident grassroots volunteers make sense of their experiences through ‘integration taxes' and ‘gestural integration'. In doing so, this paper argues that while grassroots volunteerism offers lower barriers to entry for new citizens, it constraints the diversity of integration by and through new citizen volunteers due to discrimination, marginalisation and staged integration faced in grassroots work.

Digital Media, Ageing And Faith: Older Sri Lankan Migrants In Australia And Their Digital Articulations Of Transnational Religion, Shashini Gamage, Raelene Wilding, Loretta Baldassar
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
To date, older adults have received little attention in the newly emerging technological narratives of transnational religion. This is surprising, given the strong association of later life with spiritual and religious engagement, but it likely reflects the ongoing assumption that older adults are technophobic or technologically incompetent. Drawing on ethnographic interviews with older Sinhalese Buddhist migrants from Sri Lanka, living in Melbourne, this paper explores the digital articulations of transnational religion that arise from older migrants’ uses of digital media. We focus on how engagements with digital media enable older Sinhalese to respond to an urgent need to accumulate merit …

From Aura To Awra: Toward A Tropical Queer Decolonial Performativity In The Philippines, John Paolo Sarce
From Aura To Awra: Toward A Tropical Queer Decolonial Performativity In The Philippines, John Paolo Sarce
English Faculty Publications
If datíng is to literary texts, awra is to queer decolonial performances. From the works of Bienvenido Lumbera and Walter Benjamin, this paper discusses the queering of the term aura and how it operates in tropical performances and discourses, through beki (gay language), as awra. The sign “awra” is resuscitated from the imperial lexis and queered by the topical imagination in the Philippine media. Three media texts expound these claims: Awra Briguela’s song “Clap, Clap, Clap, Awra”; Maymay Entrata’s dance “Amakabogera”; and the noontime TV game show “Beklaban,” a portmanteau of Beki (gay) …

Budget Participation: Interaction Effects Of Work Engagement And Empowerment, Yew-Ming Chia Dr, Lewis Grant Mr
Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia
This study investigates the two-way interaction effects of work engagement and empowerment on the degree of employees' budget participation industry in Scotland. Data are collected from 159 employees via an online questionnaire and analyzed using multiplicative regression analysis. The results confirm the presence of a two-way interaction effect between work engagement and empowerment on the degree of budget participation at a statistically significance level (p = 0.0002). Further analysis indicates that the higher the empowerment, the greater its enhancing effect on the positive relationship between work engagement and the degree of employees' budget participation. This study provides one of the …

Original Pilipino Music (OPM) has been significant to Filipino culture and society for years, reaching its peak at the height of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Its influence continues to cross borders globally and locally, echoing individual experiences, emotions, ideas, and alike. The popular music composed by Filipinos has been a powerful catalyst for organizing, unifying, and mobilizing individuals around a shared goal. It serves as a means of expression and communication, allowing individuals to expand their feelings on timely subjects and bring them to the surface. Hence, this study aims to pinpoint Filipino youth's preference for OPM through an online …

Organizing And Communicating Health: A Culture-Centered And Necrocapitalist Inquiry Of Groundwater Contamination In Rural West Bengal, Parameswari Mukherjee
Organizing And Communicating Health: A Culture-Centered And Necrocapitalist Inquiry Of Groundwater Contamination In Rural West Bengal, Parameswari Mukherjee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As a discursive point of praxis, this dissertation project seeks to record knowledge from below around the overlaps between health, water and health interventions emerging from rural communities located in North 24 Parganas and Purulia in West Bengal that are disproportionately impacted by water-insecurity. My dissertation also documents how multiple-stakeholders such as local NGOs, international NGOs, non-profits, and donor agencies organize access to safe water and health interventions for the water-insecure communities located in North 24 Parganas and Purulia. The integration of the CCA and necrocapitalism afford theoretical and methodological guidance in this dissertation to help document the localocentric stories …

Illustrating Postcolonial Margins: Locating Experimental, Collaborative, Indian Graphic Narratives In The Twenty-First Century, Sayanti Mondal
Theses and Dissertations
This interdisciplinary research project reassesses the genre of postcolonial Indian graphic narratives through a case study of an independent publisher in South India, Tara Books. Following a sociocultural and materialist approach to literary and cultural studies and drawing from scholarship in postcolonial studies, graphic narrative studies, and museology, the study analyzes the important contributions of postcolonial Anglophone graphic narratives in the twenty-first century. Specifically, through this project, I examine the unique ways subaltern subjects construct and take charge of their narratives to create and curate an alternate space for binary cultures to interact, partner, co-construct, and share histories and stories. …

A Rare Case Of Pancolonic Ischemia Complicated By Fusobacterium Necrophorum Bacteremia: A Review Of Colonic Ischemia For Internists, Alaina Chodoff, Diana Whitehead, Beryl Otieno, Joseph Fuscaldo
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
The varied clinical presentation and objective findings associated with colonic ischemia (CI) overlap with multiple disease processes. A high index of suspicion is critical for timely diagnosis and prognostication to avoid delays in treatment. We present a case that highlights the challenges of diagnosing CI and the high morbidity associated with severe disease. Case report: A sixty-four-year-old female presented to our community hospital with acute onset abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea, complicated by septic shock. She was initially given a diagnosis of infectious colitis until a colonoscopy was performed revealing extensive pancolonic ulcerations. Histopathological features on biopsy were most consistent …

Convergence And Transdisciplinary Teaching In Quantitative Biology, Robert Mayes, Joseph Dauer, David Owens
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The United States National Science and Technology Council has made a call for improving STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education at the convergence of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The National Science Foundation (NSF) views convergence as the merging of ideas, approaches, and technologies from widely diverse fields of knowledge to stimulate innovation and discovery. Teaching convergency requires moving to the transdisciplinary level of integration where there is deep integration of skills, disciplines, and knowledge to solve a challenging real-world problem. Here we present a summary on convergence and transdisciplinary teaching. We then provide examples of convergence and transdisciplinary …

Intertextuality And Narrativization Of Multiple Perspectives: Covid-19 Pandemic In Popular Songs In Tanzania, Spemba E. Spemba
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Close to the end of 2019, COVID-19, an infectious disease that still wreaks havoc, was discovered in Wuhan – China. The pandemic has become a major worldwide health problem to date. Its socioeconomic and cultural aftermaths have dominated the world’s public discourse. Media and literary artefacts reflect the ongoing debate, education, and communication regarding the pandemic. This paper examines how popular songs represent multiple (social-cultural, economic, and political) perspectives regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in Tanzania. The article focuses on secular and religious song lyrics to ascertain how they convey multiple perspectives regarding an understanding of COVID-19, and whether such views …

Immersion Vs. Engaged Interactivity In The Autobiography Of Jane Eyre’S Storyworld; Or What We Can Learn From Paratextual Traces, Kate Faber Oestreich
English
This paper uses The Autobiography of Jane Eyre (Nessa Aref and Alysson Hall’s 2013–2014 transmedia adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, hereafter AoJE) to explore the impact of characters’ social media accounts on user interactivity and immersion. AoJE employs the powers of social media to create a modernized and fully-fledged storyworld, yet the users’ overall experience is undermined by the very strategies meant to facilitate engaged interactivity. When social media posts become sites where users not only actively seek additional content but also ‘read’ traces of other users’ interactions with the content, those traces function as paratextual commentary, creating dialogic …
Lexical Studies On The Concept Of Dirtiness In Ancient Egyptian Daily Life, Paul David Larson
Lexical Studies On The Concept Of Dirtiness In Ancient Egyptian Daily Life, Paul David Larson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation is a study of ancient Egyptian conceptions of dirtiness. While the subjects of ritual purity and taboo in ancient Egypt have been examined in Egyptological studies, less attention has been paid to understanding the general conceptions of dirtiness and impurity in the day to day, mundane lives of the ancient Egyptians, including its role in social distinctions. This is partly because Egyptian texts, while frequently mentioning purity, often in a ritual or cultic context, usually do not state or explain exactly what is defiling or dirty. Rather than another study of ritual purity or taboo, this dissertation attempts …

Introduction: Glyphosate is a widely used, non-selective herbicide. Glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are considered safe for non-target organisms and environmentally benign at currently allowed environmental exposure levels. However, their increased use in recent years has triggered questions about possible adverse outcomes due to low dose chronic exposure in animals and humans. While the toxicity of GBHs has primarily been attributed to glyphosate, other largely unstudied components of GBHs may be inherently toxic or could act synergistically with glyphosate. Thus, comparative studies of glyphosate and GBHs are needed to parse out their respective toxicity. Methods: We performed such a comparative …

(Special Section) Sonic Congregating: The Hymn As National British Spectacle, Erin G. Johnson-Williams
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Hymn singing as an expression of national identity pervades mass sporting events in Britain. From the use of “Abide With Me” at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games (and, annually, at the opening of the Football Association Cup Final and the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final), to recent discussions by the England Rugby Football Union (RFU) around banning “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” in the wake of Black Lives Matter, hymns sung in British sporting events strategically frame quasi-religious notions of class, character, and nation. The tradition of singing hymns at national sporting events in Britain has its …

False Memories For Stereotypes: Effects Of Attention And Delay, Maria Corea Dubon
Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigated the conditions in which stereotype-based beliefs elicit the creation of false memories for information consistent with racial-occupational expectations and the extent to which attentional depletion increases this likelihood. This was examined in the context of racial-occupational stereotypes for White and Latino individuals. Participants were presented with pictures of faces paired with stereotype-consistent and -inconsistent occupational information. One group of participants was exposed to these stimuli while also completing an additional task designed to divide their attention. Their memory for these pairings was tested in both an immediate and delayed recognition test. Due to the social reliance …

Problematizing Management Learning And Education In The Development Of A Critical Management Pedagogy, Jennifer Manning
Problematizing Management Learning And Education In The Development Of A Critical Management Pedagogy, Jennifer Manning
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
In this essay, I try to answer Contu’s (2018; 2020: 738) call for management scholars to embrace and work towards intellectual activism in business schools whereby she invites her readers “to add your ‘two cents’ by working in ways that participates in building a more progressive, equitable, freer, justice-centred world”. I problematize management learning and education in regard to perpetuating inequalities and offer a critical management pedagogy to help infuse management learning and education with a critical and socially conscious awareness.

The Power Of The Virtual Platform: A Look Into Fandom Interactions Via Twitter (X), Samantha Hacker
Undergraduate Theses
Using social media to communicate has become increasingly popular since the medium was created. Twitter has been a popular breeding ground for fan communities to form social spaces. Parasocial relationship theory, as well as face negotiation theory, tie heavily into the discussion of fandoms and the creation of safe spaces on the platform. How people present themselves online is entirely dependent on the user and their level of comfort on the app. One fandom in particular that utilizes this app the most is the fan base for the seven-member South Korean boy band, BTS, who in reference to the band, …

The Role Of Online Discursive Action In Subjects' Emancipatory Repositioning In Egypt: Assault Police Case Study, Christine Saad Guirguis Ma
Theses and Dissertations
The current study's central question is how social change is discursively constructed. I studied an online feminist social movement that sparked in Egypt on Instagram in July 2020 and labeled "Assault Police." Within the critical social theory and feminism framework, I reviewed the literature on (critical) discourse, social change, and social movements. I tried to unravel the complexity around emancipation as a vital concept in the current study. I located and discussed areas of tension and identified a conceptualization that loosens the theoretical entanglement around it. The research problem sought to specify how the online discursive action facilitated desired …
