Artistic Approaches: A Study Of Creative Writers Who Teach First-Year Writing, Tyler Gillespie
Artistic Approaches: A Study Of Creative Writers Who Teach First-Year Writing, Tyler Gillespie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Currently, Writing Studies and Creative Writing occupy different disciplinary positions, but this relationship doesn’t need to be adversarial. This project illustrates “line-crossing” pedagogies of creative writers who teach first-year writing (FYW) to further discussions of how they can situate themselves into Writing Studies. To help bridge disciplinary gaps, I narrate the practices of participants and put them in conversation with existing Writing Studies scholarship and the field’s expertise. For several years, I interviewed 26 creative writers who teach FYW at 15 different institutions, which included R1s, Community Colleges, Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), Private Art Schools, Small Liberal Arts …
The Survival Of Manuscripts: Resistance, Adoption, And Adaptation To Gutenberg's Printing Press In Early Modern Europe, Kaitlin Jean Kojali
The Survival Of Manuscripts: Resistance, Adoption, And Adaptation To Gutenberg's Printing Press In Early Modern Europe, Kaitlin Jean Kojali
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper seeks to provide a brief survey of three types of responses to Gutenberg’s moveable type printing press and its effect on early modern Europe: resistance, adoption, and adaptation. Analyzing the respective examples of these three responses to print will help to explain why manuscript production survived in a world that was seemingly dominated by print. Although several different arguments for the survival of the manuscript may be derived from the exhaustive examples of print reactions, the theme of the newfound overabundance of information is the most prominent. This paper opens with an introduction, which is followed by a …
An Analysis Of Communication-Related Information And Services Offered To Parents Of Deaf Children In Puerto Rico, Brenda Belcher
An Analysis Of Communication-Related Information And Services Offered To Parents Of Deaf Children In Puerto Rico, Brenda Belcher
Capstone Collection
The period from birth to five years is a critical stage for human language acquisition, and inadequate access to language during this period can cause far-reaching negative effects. Young deaf and hard-of-hearing children face barriers to acquiring language through speaking and listening techniques, and their parents must make consequential decisions about what communicative strategies to pursue for their child. In Puerto Rico, information and support around communication approaches flow to parents from a variety of sources, including the Island’s local Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI) system, three dedicated schools for the deaf, and a variety of community-based organizations. This …

An Intercultural Study Of Refusal Strategies Used In Jordanian Arabic And American English, I. F. Huwari, F. M. Al-Khasawneh, L. M Rababah, K. A. Alruzzi, M. H. Alqaryouti
An Intercultural Study Of Refusal Strategies Used In Jordanian Arabic And American English, I. F. Huwari, F. M. Al-Khasawneh, L. M Rababah, K. A. Alruzzi, M. H. Alqaryouti
Information Sciences Letters
The present study compares and contrasts the refusal speech act in Jordanian Arabic and American English. The refusal speech act is among the most dominant issues in disciplines such as educational environment and social work. Researchers become more interested in such topics as it helps them to compare and contrast between native and non-native speakers of English. Therefore, the topic is quite common regarding identifying the strategies among non- native speakers. However, very little research discovered the similarities and differences between native and non-native speakers of English. Thus, the researchers of this study tried to fill the gap by presenting …
Architectura Transtopica: Totems Of A Journeyman, Ioannis Galanopoulos Papavasileiou
Architectura Transtopica: Totems Of A Journeyman, Ioannis Galanopoulos Papavasileiou
All Works
The project Architectura Transtopica: Totems of a Journeyman argues in favour of using and interpreting fixed architectural structures as metaphors and symbols of expatriation. The primary inquiry of this paper is to consider how autobiographic re-enactments of lived experiences with architecture, triggered by non-country specific places, illustrate one’s life journey. Building on studies that are at the intersection of social and cultural studies, humanistic geography, evolutionary ecology, anthropology, art and architecture (Alahdadi, 2018; Avci et al., 2017; Kunz, 2016; Martin et al., 2015; Cotton, 2015; Mathur, 2011; Cresswell, 2006; Relph, 1977), I argue here that producing creative parallels of expatriation …
People And Power: Person-First Language Usage And The Criminal Justice System, Casey E. Orr
People And Power: Person-First Language Usage And The Criminal Justice System, Casey E. Orr
Amplify: A Journal of Writing-as-Activism
Language is power. Word choice and terminology, especially those referring to people, are expressions of societal norms and institutional power. Dehumanizing crime-first terms and labels are abundant and common in criminal justice contexts despite being protested by system-involved individuals and activists. Instead, many advocate for person-first terms wherein identifying language emphasizes an individual’s humanity. With a peace-focused anthropological framework, this paper presents the case for person-first language in criminal justice contexts. It is evident that adopting first-person language usage regarding the criminal justice system is necessary after analyzing and considering the multiple sources, such as the voices of those who …

Too Tired To Codeswitch: Analyzing The Prophetic Rhetoric Of Critical Black Language Awareness, Lionnell Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation examines the rhetorical discourses of three critical Black Language teacher-scholar-activists through the lens of Black or African American prophetic rhetoric. This transdisciplinary project aims to expand the conversation regarding the role of rhetorical communication in the activity of instruction. This research brings teaching and instruction to the forefront as a rhetorical situation in which the cultural politics of Black languages and literacies are prophetically addressed. Based on close reading of selected texts, this dissertation offers the development of three rhetorical frameworks: (a) womanist prophetic rhetoric, (b) Black prophetic fugitivity, and (c) prophetic rehabilitation. Each framework indexes a specific …

Antiracist Challenges To Whitewashed Pedagogies: Diversifying First-Year Writing Through A Position Of Whiteness, Angela Morris
Antiracist Challenges To Whitewashed Pedagogies: Diversifying First-Year Writing Through A Position Of Whiteness, Angela Morris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Within the current kairotic moment where political attacks against Critical Race Theory and “woke” curriculums continue to gain traction, this dissertation refutes such attacks by offering investigations on how to best implement more inclusive classrooms that explore and examine the intersections of race and writing using antiracist pedagogical approaches. This dissertation features three separate mixed-methods studies all set within first-year writing (FYW) classrooms. Each study engages with one of the three questions: (1) how do we challenge white language supremacy in our writing classrooms through encouraging and investigating code-meshing, (2) how do challenge predilections towards white meritocratic discourse through the …
Defending Whiteness: The Psychic Life Of Anti-Blackness On Grindr, Luis M. Andrade, Deven Cooper
Defending Whiteness: The Psychic Life Of Anti-Blackness On Grindr, Luis M. Andrade, Deven Cooper
Contemporary Argumentation and Debate
On September 19, 2018, Grindr, the most popular gay men’s dating application, released a video titled Kindr to increase consciousness about sexual racism and make the virtual space a comfortable environment for users. This essay archives users’ comments and conversations that occurred prior to and after the release of Kindr to showcase the specificity of and pervasiveness of anti-Blackness ideology, which goes hand in hand, but is more insidious than racism on Grindr that is not addressed by the video. Drawing from recent theorizations of racism and anti-Blackness ideology and “the psychic life of racism” as theoretical frameworks, we utilize …

Triggered By Socialbots: Communicative Anthropomorphization Of Bots In Online Conversations, Salla-Maaria Laaksonen, Kaisa Laitinen, Minna Koivula, Tanja Sihvonen
Human-Machine Communication
This article examines communicative anthropomorphization, that is, assigning of humanlike features, of socialbots in communication between humans and bots. Situated in the field of human-machine communication, the article asks how socialbots are devised as anthropomorphized communication companions and explores the ways in which human users anthropomorphize bots through communication. Through an analysis of two datasets of bots interacting with humans on social media, we find that bots are communicatively anthropomorphized by directly addressing them, assigning agency to them, drawing parallels between humans and bots, and assigning emotions and opinions to bots. We suggest that socialbots inherently have anthropomorphized characteristics and …
Archipelagic Human-Machine Communication: Building Bridges Amidst Cultivated Ambiguity, Marco Dehnert
Archipelagic Human-Machine Communication: Building Bridges Amidst Cultivated Ambiguity, Marco Dehnert
Human-Machine Communication
In this commentary, I call for maintaining the archipelagic character of human-machine communication (HMC). Utilizing the metaphor of the archipelago or a chain of connected islands indicates that HMC entails a variety of islands differing in shape, size, location, and proximity to one another. Rather than aiming for conceptual unity and definitional homogeneity, I call for embracing a cultivated ambiguity related to HMC key concepts. Ambiguity in the sense of allowing these concepts to be flexible enough to be explored in different contexts. Cultivated in the sense of demanding resonance across individual studies and theoretical lineages to allow for cumulative …
Positive Emotions And Sexual Desire Among Healthy Women, Elizabeth J. Brough
Positive Emotions And Sexual Desire Among Healthy Women, Elizabeth J. Brough
Dissertations
Sexual desire disorders are highly prevalent, account for a significant proportion of sexual problems, and affect important aspects of women's lives. Sexuality research has traditionally focused on dysfunction models, rather than human strengths approaches. Recently, positive psychologists have developed models and methods to examine human strengths. This study used Frederickson's Broaden and Build model to examine links between positive emotions and sexual desire among women. Positive emotions words were examined relative to sexual domains frequently cited in clinical studies, and compared to sexual cognitions which have been linked to positive sexual outcomes in past studies.

From Counter-Strike To Counterterrorism: How The Cheater Reconfigures Our Understanding Of Asymmetric Warfare, Enya C. Silva
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Around the turn of the century, as the United States increased its military presence in the Middle East in what was widely known as the War on Terror, computer games were also rising in popularity. Military inspired narratives and settings are very common in video games, especially in the genre known as the first person shooter – characterized by a single player, first person point of view. Alexander Galloway provides a vocabulary for understanding the video game, and the first person shooter in particular, derived from the framework of game studies. Scholarship around video games usually either seeks to affirm …

The Changing Contours Of The Indian Public Sphere: Courtesans, Culture, And The British Invasion Of Oudh In Kenizé Mourad’S In The City Of Gold And Silver, Anurag Kumar, Isha Malhotra, Rishav Bali
Journal of International Women's Studies
The article explores the role of women in the Indian freedom struggle, particularly Begam Hazarat Mahal of Lucknow through Kenizé Mourad’s In the City of Gold and Silver (2010). The text explicitly and implicitly foregrounds the role of tawaifs (courtesans) in the culture and the literature of the public sphere prior to 1857 or the first Indian freedom struggle. Their participation in the freedom struggle was a response to the British attempt to reduce their role to strictly economic and sexual purposes. The article imbricates the issues of nationalism, gender, and sexuality by mining the invisible contributions of various groups …

Excavation Of Silenced Voices: (Re)Visiting Menka Shivdasani’S Frazil Through The Modern Feminist Discourse Of Indian Writing In English, Rangnath Thakur, Binod Mishra
Journal of International Women's Studies
The postmodernist phase of Indian English writing is characterized by the voices of many strong women expressing a feminist exploration of alternative discourses in women’s writing which are distinguished from the patriarchal framework of literary discourse. Along with Kamala Das, Meena Alexander, Imtiaz Dharkar, and Eunice de Souza, Menka Shivdasani is an active voice in contemporary Indian English poetry. Shivdasani is a prolific poet who has written poetry on various social, cultural, religious, and personal issues. Her four poetry collections include Nirvana at Ten Rupees (1990), Stet (2001), Safe House (2015), and Frazil (2018). Through her poetry, she has endeavored …

Assertion Or Transgression: A Critical Study Of Surpankha As An Unwelcomed Girl Child In Kavita Kané’S Lanka’S Princess, Nancy Sharma, Smita Jha
Journal of International Women's Studies
Kavita Kané’s Lanka’s Princess is the retelling of Ramayana3 from the perspective of the often misrepresented and misunderstood character of Surpankha,4 the daughter of rishi (sage) Vishravas and rakshasi (monster) Kaiskesi. Kavita Kané uses myths as a pretext to defy the idea of an ideal femininity in her book. Kané’s representation humanizes the character of Surpankha (translation: woman with sharp fingernails) who was born as the beautiful princess Meenakshi, but her defiant demeanor caused her brother Ravan to give her the name of Surpankha. Kané’s work exhibits the inner thought process of an unwelcome girl child in the family who …

Language Contact And The State Of Multilingualism In The Linguistic Landscape Of Tete Province In Mozambique, Crisófia Langa Da Da Câmara, Amani Lusekelo
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Mozambique is a multilingual country that adopted Portuguese as the language of official communication right from Independence Day in 1975. Later in the 1990s it adopted 19 Bantu languages as the media of instruction in lower education. This move opened an avenue for Bantu languages to be used in public domains in the country. Since the Metropolitan Maputo had been the centre of previous research of languages of public spaces, this paper looks at the language uses that unfold in the signposts of Tete Province to determine the manifestations of the Bantu languages in urban public spaces. Firstly, the findings …
Writing Trauma At Home: The Poetics Of Testimony In Iraq’S Literary And Cultural Production, Imran Alkhalifah
Writing Trauma At Home: The Poetics Of Testimony In Iraq’S Literary And Cultural Production, Imran Alkhalifah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation explores the unconventional forms of testimony to trauma in Iraq. Due to a long history of war and/or sectarian violence, Iraq’s literary and cultural production provide unique ways of representing traumatic experience. These representations, I argue, challenge the predominate western notions of representing trauma. The unique ways of writing/expressing trauma examined in this dissertation offer a new perspective of reading trauma as opposed to the postmodern trauma aesthetics that highlights fragmentation, repetition, and dissociation as symptoms of traumatic experience. This hegemonic approach has led to a deprived investigation of the unique social and historical contexts in which trauma …
American Exceptionalism As/In Constitutional Interpretation, Lucy Williams
American Exceptionalism As/In Constitutional Interpretation, Lucy Williams
Georgia Law Review
American exceptionalism—the idea that America is superior, chosen, and tasked with a unique mission—is a foundational part of America’s political culture. Its themes regularly appear in political speeches, at campaign rallies, and at national celebrations. But exceptionalism also appears frequently in another, less obvious place: Supreme Court opinions. Scholars and pundits routinely scour these opinions to identify the jurisprudential theories and political leanings that drive case outcomes. But as yet, legal scholars have paid little attention to the exceptionalist themes in the Court’s case law. Some legal scholars study the ways American constitutional law is distinctive, or exceptional, when compared …
From Archive To Anarchive: How Bereal Challenges Traditional Archival Concepts And Transforms Social Media Archival Practices, Mandi Li
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
BeReal, an “anti-Instagram” photo-sharing app, not only challenges the performative culture of social media but also revolutionizes the very concept of ‘archives.’ By employing the technical walkthrough method grounded in software studies, this research found that BeReal can be conceptualized as an anarchive that consists of diverse storytellers, decentralized micro-narratives, and interdependent contexts. More specifically, although some classical archival elements can be found in BeReal, the platform challenges the traditional archival industry in two ways: one, its ordinary record subjects and high level of accessibility shatter the centralization of traditional archives; two, it challenges the humanist value of archivists by …
Women's Interracial Friendships: Cultivating Coalitional Possibilities Across Difference Through Dialogue, Akie Fukushige Wenk
Women's Interracial Friendships: Cultivating Coalitional Possibilities Across Difference Through Dialogue, Akie Fukushige Wenk
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In my dissertation, I thread through the macro-structure as well as micro-operations of hegemonic ideologies, namely white-supremacist capitalist cis-hetero patriarchy (hooks, 1995, Valdes, 1996), that has historically plagued the United States, eventually gaining a global reach over time. I center interracial friendship between Black and White cis-women, where I locate coalitional possibilities that begin at the grassroots level. I situate this interracial relationship within the socio-ecological system where the personal meets the social (including racialized backgrounds). I use a series of analogies to equate these ideologies as toxins in the air, water, and soil. Soil is where we can work …

Finding The Why: Trauma's Origins And Effects In Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Hope Lopez
Finding The Why: Trauma's Origins And Effects In Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Hope Lopez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the effects of Toni Morrison’s first novel, The Bluest Eye, on its readers and the public discourse surrounding the central issue of systemic racism and incest. The central focus of the analysis is trauma in the novel: how Morrison captures that trauma in writing, how the reader encounters and interprets that trauma, and the effects of that trauma on the narrative and the reader. To construct this argument, I apply the lenses of reader response criticism, psychoanalysis, and trauma studies to the novel.
Morrison expressed concern that readers would miss the crucial message of why the …

Computer Science Student Research
In the age of globalization, international students from developing countries (for brevity, we term them as ‘international students’ in this paper, unless otherwise specified) have become an integral part of the U.S. education system. After relocation to the USA, first-generation international students undergo not only societal differences but also experience changes in the technology space – posing unique challenges for them. Our semi-structured interviews with 26 participants who were pursuing education at the time of our study, or had recently graduated informed us of their adaptation to the technology landscape in the USA; our analysis revealed the underlying challenges in …

With over 1.4 billion users of Windows 10, it is the most widely used operating system in the world. In Windows, applications from unknown publishers are popular due to mass availability and ease of access. Installing such applications can lead to malware infection, including viruses and ransomware. Therefore, we explored the design of interventions to prevent the users from installing applications from unknown publishers. To this end, we conducted a lab study with nine participants to understand the perceptions and behavior of users toward the designed interventions. Then, we conducted an online study with 256 participants to evaluate the impact …
