Designer-Researcher’S Positionality; Materialities Matter, Amber De Coen, Niels Hendriks, Andrea Wilkinson
Designer-Researcher’S Positionality; Materialities Matter, Amber De Coen, Niels Hendriks, Andrea Wilkinson
IASDR Conference Series
With the rise of cross-cultural, participatory research projects, there is a growing need for reflexivity in the design research community. One way to address this need is by using positionality, which acknowledges the researcher's personal, social, cultural, political position in relation to the subject, participants, context, and process of a study. However, this paper argues that in design research, additional reflections should be made on the research materialities, seeing as these may also reflect the designer-researcher's biases and assumptions, which have implications for the research process and outcomes. Drawing on the example of a participatory design research project researching the …
Participatory Design For Craft Sustainability In Rural Areas: A Multi-Sited Approach, Peining Sheng
Participatory Design For Craft Sustainability In Rural Areas: A Multi-Sited Approach, Peining Sheng
IASDR Conference Series
This second-year ongoing doctoral research explores how participatory design can help rural-based craftspeople add value to their craft practice and balance selling prices against hidden costs, which will stimulate the development of a creative economy and reinforce local cultural identity. This research project aims to: a) contribute to implementing the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8, 11, and 13; b) reform stereotypes surrounding the ‘Made in China’ label; c) develop an effective strategy for rural craft development and sustainability. The need to achieve SDGs is urgent today, as COVID-19, an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, has impacted people’s daily lives …

Yearning For Revival_Using Healing As The Linking Strategy To Recreate Emotionally Resilient Communities, Tanhao Gao, Yujia Liu, Lingyu Zhu, Hongtao Zhou, Li Zhang
IASDR Conference Series
COVID-19 and Omicron variants have caused unprecedented impacts on global operating systems, society was forced to accept a painful coexistence with the pandemic, and the derived economic, social, and cultural disasters have left communities plagued by the "Long Covid" aftermath and psychological pressure. Worse still, society has witnessed an increasingly severe problem between spaces and services, including delayed regeneration, disorganization, and isolation. Therefore, it has become crucial and urgent to discover linking strategies between spaces and services, residents and communities, and the broader interrelated field during the recovery and change transition. Through comparative theoretical analysis, we identify the conceptual definition, …

E-Motioning: Exploring The Effects Of Emotional Generative Visuals On Creativity And Connectedness During Videoconferencing, Tianqin Lu, Jun Hu
IASDR Conference Series
Videoconferencing has become an essential part of business life, and the trend of remote collaboration is set to continue in the future. However, research has shown that the lack of social cues in videoconferencing negatively impacts human social connectedness and hinders the production of creative ideas. Therefore, E-Motioning has been proposed as a system that generates geometrical-based visuals according to users’ real-time emotions, and these visuals are used, as backgrounds for videoconferencing. An experiment was conducted with twenty-four participants to examine the effects of E-Motioning on creativity and connectedness in Microsoft Teams compared to a control condition that uses the …
Decolonizing Creativity In The Digital Era, Laura Herman, Payal Arora
Decolonizing Creativity In The Digital Era, Laura Herman, Payal Arora
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores the importance of decolonizing creativity in the digital era within the context of the platformised creator economy. We argue that technology has largely been designed for Western audiences by Western audiences, thereby overlooking an enormous segment of global Internet users who exist outside of the Global North. To take a truly inclusive approach to design research, it is imperative to consider local impacts and vernacular realities of designed platforms. Therefore, we share the results of fieldwork conducted with young people in India to produce a non-Western, decolonial perspective on digital creativity and algorithmic cultures. In sharing these …

Meet Me At The Local Shop: Designing Community Anchors For Customer Engagement, Eunji Woo, Chorong Kim, Hyejin Kwon, Yedam Ryu, Youngok Choi, Ki-Young Nam
IASDR Conference Series
Design plays a vital role in facilitating community-building by triggering interpersonal social interactions, enhancing a sense of attachment, and connecting individuals. This study aims to identify how local creators are currently casting community anchors for their customers and explore design opportunities to further enhance these practices. First, a literature review is conducted to establish the significance and concepts of ‘local creators’, ‘community anchors’ and ‘level of customer engagement’. Subsequently, 40 practical cases are thematically analysed to identify which and how local creators cast community anchors to engage customers for community-building. Consequently, fourteen types of community anchors and five ways of …
Exploiting Co-Design, Game Thinking And Citizen Science In A Workshop-Like Experience For Stimulating Reflections With Teens, Chiara Ceccarini, Tommaso Zambon, Catia Prandi
Exploiting Co-Design, Game Thinking And Citizen Science In A Workshop-Like Experience For Stimulating Reflections With Teens, Chiara Ceccarini, Tommaso Zambon, Catia Prandi
IASDR Conference Series
Teenagers are constantly overwhelmed with information and activities, both considering school activities and their free time. How can we actively engage them in educational experiences to stimulate discussions and reflections about social issues? To answer this question, we conceived a workshop-like experience where we put into practice three well know methods and concepts, such as co-design, citizen science, and game thinking. The final output of the activity is a low-fidelity prototype of a mobile application, co-designed by a group of students. By taking advantage of open-ended making to engage participants in the ideation of a gamified/game-based citizen science application, we …

My Guy Sa Malakanyang: Ang Mga Internal At Eksternal Na Problema At Hamong Tinugunan At Kinaharap Ng Administrasyon Ni Pangulong Ramon Magsaysay (My Guy In Malacañang: The Internal And External Problems And Challenges Addressed And Faced By The Administration Of President Ramon Magsaysay), Jeremiah Montejo
Mabini Review
One of the most celebrated personalities in the political arena, both domestically and internationally, is the 7th President of the Philippines Ramon del Fierro Magsaysay Sr., Most known as “My Guy.” He gained mass support and almost a cult-of-personality status thanks to his unique campaign jingle, “Mambo Magsaysay,” composed by Sen. Raul Manglapus in 1953. Despite holding the highest position in government, he is remembered as a president who look for and cared for the Common tao (common people) due to his down-to-earth personification. Tracing roots into his humble begginings being raised in simple way of life in the town …

Public Pedagogy, Autotheory, And Egyptian Female Podcasters, Yasmeen Ebada, Kim Fox
Faculty Journal Articles
This research examines six Egyptian female podcasters whose work sits at the theoretical intersection of public pedagogy and autotheory, loosely defined as a first-person narrative form of feminist expression used to challenge hegemonic discourses as a means of activism. The two theories supplement each other, especially since feminism aims to abolish sexism, and public pedagogy is a means to obtain that result. The researchers adopted American-Canadian cultural critic Henry Giroux’s (2004) theory of public pedagogy because it allows for critical dialogue to address discrimination and push for egalitarian transfiguration. Autotheory was chosen for its relation to the podcasters' life experiences …
Angat Buhay Lahat? A Review On The State Of Philippine Politics And The Frame Of Democracy During The 2022 Philippine National Elections, Arvin John Ramirez
Angat Buhay Lahat? A Review On The State Of Philippine Politics And The Frame Of Democracy During The 2022 Philippine National Elections, Arvin John Ramirez
Mabini Review
The 1987 Philippine Constitution describes the Philippines as a “democratic and republican State”. The same constitution upheld sovereignty of the country resides in the Filipino people and such that the government authority emanates from them. This provision clearly describes how democracy should work in the Philippines. However, election-related violence and vote buying are still happening around the country. These incidences are backed up by various theories about how democracy is operated in the Philippines such as elite democracy, patron-client framework and utang na loob. These two concepts may be the reason why political dynasties exist in the country, which leads …

Grounding History Instruction: Engaging Place And Scale Through Iterative Local Inquiry Design, Megan Vangorder
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Teaching local history is often an afterthought in the high school history classroom. It is difficult to find enough instructional time to incorporate local stories and there are often gaps in resource development and approach from a local lens. This article seeks to help teachers articulate a locally driven inquiry approach. Using Illinois as the local framework and the C3 Inquiry Design Model as the tool, teachers can begin to map out how to implement the competing mandates to promote disciplinary skill development, demonstrate content expertise using state mandated units of study, drive student-oriented history, and foster civic competence all …

A Portable And Low-Cost Incubator System Enabling Real-Time Cell Imaging Based On A Smartphone, Ari̇f Engi̇n Çeti̇n
Turkish Journal of Physics
Incubators serve as essential tools for maintaining optimal temperature, humidity, and atmospheric gas composition for cell cultures. Their applications span across various fields like cell biology, microbiology, and molecular biology. However, in many cell-based studies, observing cellular changes often necessitates moving cells out of the incubator for microscope examination. Unfortunately, exposing cells to an environment that does not support healthy growth can undermine the reliability of test outcomes. In this article, we present a groundbreaking solution: a cost-effective, portable incubator system seamlessly integrated with a smartphone for real-time characterization tests. This innovation offers comparable imaging capabilities and maintains an environment …

From Patriarchal Stereotypes To Matriarchal Pleasures Of Hybridity: Representation Of A Muslim Family In Berlin, Rahime Özgün Kehya Dr
Journal of Religion & Film
Sinan Çetin’s blockbuster Berlin in Berlin (1993) is a Turkish-German co-production. In contrast to certain representational tendencies with German orientalism or Turkish occidentalism, it deconstructs the intersectional structures of migration, religion, and gender. The portrayal of religion in films about Turkish-German labour migration is a kind of cultural narcissism often projected into national cinema by denigrating the faith of the other and glorifying one’s own religion. However, perspectives at such intersections are critical and require sensitivity in filmmaking, as films can create prejudice or help build peaceful relationships around these sensitive issues. The paper employs discourse analysis in linking Derrida’s …

Reframing Space: Religion, History, And Memory In The Early Documentary Film Of The Yugoslav Space, Milja Radovic
Journal of Religion & Film
This paper examines cinematic representations of religion and religious communities in the early cinema of the Yugoslav space. This paper introduces the readers to the rich heritage of the cinema of the Yugoslav space by providing 1) the first study of the representations of religion and the concepts of faith in the early film, and 2) novel approaches in reading religion and history through film. Film is used as a primary rather than supplementary source in historical research on diverse religious and ethnic communities in this part of the Balkan Peninsula. This is the first study that investigates the importance, …

Marginalized Students Need To Write About Their Lives: Meaningful Assignments For Analysis And Affirmation, Nancy G. Mack
Marginalized Students Need To Write About Their Lives: Meaningful Assignments For Analysis And Affirmation, Nancy G. Mack
English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications
Abstract: The bias against personal experience manifests in writing courses as privileging the citation of scholars, fearing emotional writing, and equating argumentation with democratic ideals. To value the lives and knowledges of marginalized students, the curricular goals, assignments, and activities for writing courses needs to be reconsidered. Culturally sustaining pedagogy explores, extends, and examines the experiences of students. Meaningful, experience-based, narrative writing assignments are suggested: memoir essays, ethnographic research reports, and multigenre interview projects. Analysis activities challenge students to examine a chosen experience through several scholarly lenses. By adding complex analysis to their writing, students gain a challenging new experience …

'Poor Unfortunate Souls': Acculturation And Reception Of Womanhood In Fairy Tales, Dalton C. Whitby
'Poor Unfortunate Souls': Acculturation And Reception Of Womanhood In Fairy Tales, Dalton C. Whitby
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
This essay examines traditional fairy tales, symbolized by Perrault’s “Blue Beard,” and contemporary ones, illustrated by Disney’s animated film Brave (2012), with the implementation of ideas from theorists Marcia Lieberman and Hans Robert Jauss, to demonstrate that dated conceptions of womanhood prevail in these stories and continue to be received and acculturate children today. Although it is reasonable to assume social changes brought on by feminism would echo in twenty-first-century fairy tales, an investigation of Disney's animated fairy tale films, the modern storyteller aimed at acculturating children, reveals that these stories subversively persist in presenting traditional ideas of womanhood, depicting …
The Dark Side Of Iconicity: How Controversial Icons Become Lightning Rods For Passionate Audiences, Vanessa Kristin Bittner
The Dark Side Of Iconicity: How Controversial Icons Become Lightning Rods For Passionate Audiences, Vanessa Kristin Bittner
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation delves into the dynamic interplay between controversial public figures, audiences, and the creation of icons today. Through three distinct articles, it explores how icons emerge and evolve within contentious political discourse. The first article introduces the concept of "dialectic icons," exemplified by figures like Colin Kaepernick, demonstrating their ability to evoke emotional responses and drive social polarization. The second article examines the role of antagonistic audiences in magnifying negative iconization, using Greta Thunberg as a case study to reveal the conflict potential of these figures. The third article introduces the notion of "iconic extensions" using the MAGA hat …

Concluding Athletic Careers: Post-Athletic Transitions In The Atlantic Coast Conference, Eric Sabin, Sarah Stokowski, Chris Corr, Brennan K. Berg, Michael Hutchinson
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Due to the pervasiveness of athletic role engulfment and a salient athletic identity, collegiate athletes often experience difficulties upon conclusion of their competitive athletic career. Such engulfment and fixed athletic identity are detrimental to an athlete’s post-athletic transition. Given the role of athletic department institutional members (e.g., administrators, coaches, staff) in the formative development of collegiate athletes’ lives, athletic departments occupy an integral position to assist athletes in their post-athletic transition. To examine the practices currently implemented among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletic departments relative to holistic athlete development, semi-structured interviews were conducted with institutional members at nine ( …

Unveiling The Impact: Mexico's Decree On Genetically Modified Corn And Its Ramifications On Food Security, Lauren Mcshea
Unveiling The Impact: Mexico's Decree On Genetically Modified Corn And Its Ramifications On Food Security, Lauren Mcshea
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research delves into the repercussions of Mexico's presidential decree in late 2020, which imposed a ban on the human consumption of genetically modified (GM) corn by January 2024. In a trade dispute under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the decree has sparked tensions between Mexico and the United States, particularly concerning the disruption of GM corn exports. Beyond trade dynamics, the study aims to address the broader impact on Mexico's food security landscape, exploring the intricate connections between the ban and various factors, including agricultural practices, economic implications, and shifts in the corn market dynamics. This research seeks to …
