“Love Thy Social Media!”: Hysteria And The Interpassive Subject, Jack Black Jan 2023

“Love Thy Social Media!”: Hysteria And The Interpassive Subject, Jack Black

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

According to the 2020 docudrama, The Social Dilemma, our very addiction to “social media” has, today, become encapsulated in the tensions between its facilitation as a mode of interpersonal communication and as an insidious conduit for machine learning, surveillance capitalism and manipulation. Amidst a variety of interviewees – many of whom are former employees of social media companies – the documentary finishes on a unanimous conclusion: something must change. By using the docudrama as a pertinent example of our “social media malaise,” and while remaining aware of the problems and unethical practices encompassing international digital/social media companies, this paper …

Stalking Oneself: The Fantasmatic Intersubjectivity Of Google, Alois Sieben Jan 2023

Stalking Oneself: The Fantasmatic Intersubjectivity Of Google, Alois Sieben

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This essay reads fictional and non-fictional accounts of digital stalking as signals of larger changes in intersubjectivity itself caused by Google. Most social media platforms trap users in imaginary relations, in which the other is encountered as a complete profile, but Google allows the searcher to locate an absence in the other in the form of a missing search result. As will be shown in an analysis of two contemporary novels whose first-person narrations center around Google-stalking, Caroline Kepnes’s You (2014) and Olivia Sudjic’s Sympathy (2017), Google’s mode of intersubjectivity amounts to an endless tunnel with no light at its …

Lacan And The Algorithm, Clint Burnham Jan 2023

Lacan And The Algorithm, Clint Burnham

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Exploring the development of algorithms in Lacanian theory, specifically the "R schema" in the 1950s, I argue that psychoanalysis, read through contemporary debates about the "algorithmic cult" of Netflix and other avatars of popular culture, can be said to reveal the inhuman, machinic essence of subjectivity. The etiology of algorithms, mathemes, and other formulae and diagrams in Lacan’s oeuvre has been under-studied, in part because for some readers they are not as attractive as his more bravura flourishes of word play as exegetical excess, and in part because they derive largely from the ‘hard’ structuralist moment of his work in …

From Extractivism To Adjacency. A Research Manifesto, Margarita Palacios, Anette Baldauf Jan 2023

From Extractivism To Adjacency. A Research Manifesto, Margarita Palacios, Anette Baldauf

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This essay concerns with the ways in which extractivism continues to be reproduced in academic frameworks despite innumerous initiatives of decolonization. Engaging with artistic research and embracing a materialist approach that emphasizes embeddedness and embodiment, as well as acknowledging the affective-aesthetic flows that accompany research, the authors locate the heart of the problem at the disjuncture between critical epistemology and research practices. This disavowed space of knowledge production, they argue, is where the logics of extractivism and its racialized epistemic dualism are reproduced. The authors put forward the notion of adjacency, as in their view, dwelling on the power of …

Cbx5 Loss Drives Egfr Inhibitor Resistance And Results In Therapeutically Actionable Vulnerabilities In Lung Cancer, Suresh Bugide, Yvonne J K Edwards, Romi Gupta, Michael R Green, Narendra Wajapeyee Jan 2023

Cbx5 Loss Drives Egfr Inhibitor Resistance And Results In Therapeutically Actionable Vulnerabilities In Lung Cancer, Suresh Bugide, Yvonne J K Edwards, Romi Gupta, Michael R Green, Narendra Wajapeyee

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Although epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFRi) are approved for treating EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), emergence of acquired resistance limits their clinical benefits. Several mechanisms for acquired resistance to EGFRi in LUAD have been identified; however, the molecular basis for this resistance remains unknown in ~30% of LUAD. Chromatin and DNA modifiers and their regulators play important roles in determining response to anticancer therapies. Therefore, to identify nongenetic mechanisms of EGFRi resistance in LUAD, we performed an epigenome-wide shRNA screen targeting 363 human epigenetic regulator genes. This screen identified loss of the transcriptional repressor chromobox homolog 5 …

Meaning In Parenting And Why It Matters, Dr Colm O'Doherty Jan 2023

Meaning In Parenting And Why It Matters, Dr Colm O'Doherty

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The central premise of this article is that parental choices are influenced by economic factors and associated cultural values. Intensive parenting repertoires such as helicopter parenting have come to the fore as social mobility has stalled and economic pressures resulting from neo liberal policies have increased. As a result child rearing has become more of a technical craft than a fulfilling act. Seeking a meritocratic bulwark against increasing inequality parenting has been recast as a technocratic approach to the rearing of successful offspring. Investing in children has become more technical and politicised in order to meet the demands of globalisation. …

The Effects Of Target Facial Stimuli Race, Emotional Expression, And Time Delay On Facial Recognition Memory, Makayla Smullin Jan 2023

The Effects Of Target Facial Stimuli Race, Emotional Expression, And Time Delay On Facial Recognition Memory, Makayla Smullin

Theses and Dissertations

Emotional expression, race, and length of time between initially seeing the face and subsequent recognition potentially contribute to face recognition. In this study, race and emotional expression of the facial stimuli, and time delay between study and test were manipulated. A sample of 91 participants was recruited from Illinois State University. Participants completed a study session and two test phases evaluating facial recognition performance of racially Black and White facial stimuli. Target images from the RADIATE face stimulus set (Conley et al., 2018; Tottenham et al., 2009) were used in this study. Faces were presented with either a happy or …

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Fast Blue (FB) and Cholera Toxin-B (CTB) are two retrograde tracers extensively used to label alpha-motoneurons (α-MNs). The overall goals of the present study were to (1) assess the effectiveness of different FB and CTB protocols in labeling α-MNs, (2) compare the labeling quality of these tracers at standard concentrations reported in the literature (FB 2% and CTB 0.1%) versus lower concentrations to overcome tracer leakage, and (3) determine an optimal protocol for labeling α-MNs in young B6SJL and aged C57Bl/J mice (when axonal transport is disrupted by aging). Hindlimb muscles of young B6SJL and aged C57Bl/J mice were intramuscularly …

Molecular Characteristics Of Periodontal Health: Collagens: Defining The Healthy Human Gingival Collagen Transcriptome, Christina Zachariadou, Thomas Hart, Deborah Hooper, Angelo Mariotti Jan 2023

Molecular Characteristics Of Periodontal Health: Collagens: Defining The Healthy Human Gingival Collagen Transcriptome, Christina Zachariadou, Thomas Hart, Deborah Hooper, Angelo Mariotti

School of Dentistry Faculty Publications

Background: Defining periodontal health has been an ambitious and complex goal. The numerous and varied definitions of what constitutes periodontal health have resulted in a collection of subjective and unreliable clinical findings to diagnose and classify periodontal health and disease. The aim of this study was to fundamentally delineate the molecular characteristics of healthy periodontal tissues in men and women as they age, using the most abundant connective tissue component: Collagens. Methods: Healthy gingival biopsies were separated into “young” (aged 18–35 years, five men/five women) and “old” (≥60 years, five men/four women) age groups depending on biological sex. RNA was …

Portals To Learning: Threshold Concepts In Art History Teaching And Learning, Rhonda L. Reymond Jan 2023

Portals To Learning: Threshold Concepts In Art History Teaching And Learning, Rhonda L. Reymond

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

Threshold concepts are conceived of as portals to learning that open previously inaccessible ways of thinking. They encompass specific ideas within a discipline that must be mastered before the learner can progress. The process of identifying threshold concepts can reveal hidden or unacknowledged fundamental disciplinary beliefs and epistemology. Integrating a threshold concepts framework into the scholarship of teaching and learning in art history (SoTL-AH) can help faculty diagnose and anticipate when students are likely to encounter troublesome knowledge within an art history course. Distinguishing these thresholds can aid instructors in designing courses that prepare for specific stages that present conceptual …

Developing Critical Thinking And Effective Communication Skills In The Future Aviation Workforce, Cihan Aydiner, Tanya Buhler Corbin, Courtney Tan

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Critical thinking and effective communication are among the top skills necessary for developing a resilient future workforce across professional areas. Recent world events have led to an increase in the demand for these skills in disaster and emergency management professions, especially those in and adjacent to the aviation industry. As such, the importance of higher education settings in teaching the skills needed to equip the workforce to face future challenges cannot be overstated. However, there are gaps in how these skills are taught in higher education to meet the needs of aviation employers seeking disaster and emergency professionals. This paper …

Queer Ecologies: A Final Syllabus/Zine Product Of Our Independent Study, Yeh Seo Jung, Ray Craig Jan 2023

Queer Ecologies: A Final Syllabus/Zine Product Of Our Independent Study, Yeh Seo Jung, Ray Craig

Crossings: Swarthmore Undergraduate Feminist Research Journal

This zine is the product of our independent study course Queer Ecologies, which is an exploration of bio-social systems using a queer and feminist theoretical lens. We aim to look critically at knowledge formation and construct alternative visions for more just and sustainable relationships between science, nature, and ourselves. While queer theory most directly interrogates the normative structure of heterosexuality both in humans and in biology more broadly, these studies include analyses of hierarchy, power, and value. Queer Ecology can be used to examine phenomena such as climate change, extinction, pollution, species hierarchies, agricultural practices, resource extraction, and human population …

A Narrative Review Of Student Evaluations Of Teaching In Decolonial Praxis: Implications For Occupational Therapy Higher Education, Fatima Hendricks, Michaele Singleton, Asia Clark, Marina Mishin, Marissa Epps

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Student evaluations of teaching (SETs) are the primary source for evaluating teaching effectiveness and are used for deciding tenure and promotion. However, as efforts to engage in a decolonial critique of higher education amplify, the use of SETs in teaching and learning requires scrutiny. A narrative review was used to address the research question of SET biases in decolonial praxis and what insights may be useful for OT decolonial praxis. We identify and describe two content areas: (a) SET biases and (b) recommendations for alternatives promoting OT decolonial praxis. A total of 92 articles were sourced from five databases. Of …

“I Am Not Going To Hide Who I Am”: How Jewish Girl Activists Navigate Their Relationship To Voice, Visibility, And Representation, Cheryl Weiner

Educational Studies Dissertations

This dissertation examined how 32 Jewish activist girls, aged 14 to 18, who were affiliated with Jewish communities navigated their relationship with voice, visibility, and representation. A primary goal of the study was to understand the challenges they faced in their everyday lives and to make their knowledge known. Research questions that guided the study included: 1) How do Jewish activist girls navigate their relationship to voice, visibility, and representation?; 2) What are the unique challenges experienced by Jewish girl activists?; and 3) How do Jewish girl activists exercise resistance against the challenges they experience? The literature that informed this …

Renewing Historical Criminology: Scope, Significance, And Future Directions, Iain Channing, David Churchill, Henry Yeomans Jan 2023

Renewing Historical Criminology: Scope, Significance, And Future Directions, Iain Channing, David Churchill, Henry Yeomans

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Recent years have seen increasing interest in, and scholarly discussion of, historical criminology. Yet there remains at present no clear, settled view as to what historical criminology entails, how it is best pursued, and what its future might hold. This article explores the several conceptions of historical criminology found in the present literature, which associate it variously with archival research, practical inquiry, a concern with temporality, and a certain approach to interdisciplinary scholarship. Adopting the view that historical criminology entails a special regard for historical time, the review goes on to assess its significance to the wider field, examining its …

Dinitrogen Emissions Dominate Nitrogen Gas Emissions From Soils With Low Oxygen Availability In A Moist Tropical Forest, Maya Almaraz, Peter M. Groffman, Whendee L. Silver, Steven J. Hall, Yang Lin, Christine S. O'Connell, Stephen Porder

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Lowland tropical forest soils are relatively N rich and are the largest global source of N2O (a powerful greenhouse gas) to the atmosphere. Despite the importance of tropical N cycling, there have been few direct measurements of N2 (an inert gas that can serve as an alternate fate for N2O) in tropical soils, limiting our ability to characterize N budgets, manage soils to reduce N2O production, or predict the future role that N limitation to primary productivity will play in buffering against climate change. We collected soils from across macro- and micro-topographic gradients …

Raymond Williams' Significance To Current Literary And Cultural Studies, Ning Wang Jan 2023

Raymond Williams' Significance To Current Literary And Cultural Studies, Ning Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Raymond Williams' Significance to Current Literary and Cultural Studies
Abstract: Raymond Williams was introduced to China in the latter 1980s, and he is still considered prominent in his influence on China's research on world literature and culture studies. Williams' works cover some fundamental issues of Marxist literary theory, such as “hegemony,” “ideology,” “culture,” “materialism,” and “common culture,” and develop the contemporary form of Marxist literary theory with his dynamic construction of cultural materialism, thus bridging Marxist socio'historical and aesthetic criticism and cultural and linguistic issues. When literary and cultural theory is on the decline in the West, Williams' legacy is …
