Optimized Parameters Fitting Of A Poro-Elastic Acoustic Model With Ultrasonic Measurements For The Monitoring Of Corroding Rebar In Reinforced Concrete, Samuel Shaffer Jan 2023

Optimized Parameters Fitting Of A Poro-Elastic Acoustic Model With Ultrasonic Measurements For The Monitoring Of Corroding Rebar In Reinforced Concrete, Samuel Shaffer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Traditional techniques of observing cracking within reinforced structures can be invasive, leading to an increased risk of added corrosion to structures already undergoing corrosive processes. The research presented in this document improves upon a nondestructive method for detecting early crack formation in reinforced concrete. This method includes using acoustic signaling to add a layer of salt water between the sensor and analyzed sample. Following the collection of surface and rebar echo responses, an adapted version of the novel Biot-Stoll method is used to model sound propagation for poro-elastic mediums. Testing of model parameters and variables has improved the root mean …

Possible Morphological Advantages For Tolerating High Temperature And Humidity In A Subtropical Passerine (Peucaea Aestivalis), Billy Abbott Jan 2023

Possible Morphological Advantages For Tolerating High Temperature And Humidity In A Subtropical Passerine (Peucaea Aestivalis), Billy Abbott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Animals face both natural and sexual selection pressures, and at times, these pressures conflict with one another. This results in a tradeoff between sexual and natural selection. In my thesis, I examine aspects of Bachman’s sparrows’ behavior and morphology in relation to weather conditions in light of these two conflicting pressures. Large bill size is selected for by the natural selection pressures of thermoregulation. Smaller bills are selected for by the sexual selection pressures of song quality. Both thermoregulation and song are important behaviors/processes that have fitness implications. By looking at bill size in relation to thermoregulatory ability and song …

Porifera Biodiversity In The Indian River Lagoon: Evaluating The Latitudinal Ecotone And Similarities With Saint Lucie Reef, Greer Babbe Jan 2023

Porifera Biodiversity In The Indian River Lagoon: Evaluating The Latitudinal Ecotone And Similarities With Saint Lucie Reef, Greer Babbe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Sponges (Phylum Porifera) are hardy organisms persisting and predicted to become more dominant world-wide under climate change scenarios. However, we lack baseline knowledge on sponge biodiversity in transitional areas (subtropical to warm-temperate) that are more susceptible to climate change such as The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) (estuary) and Saint Lucie Reef (northern most coral reef) ecosystems in south Florida. The aims of this master’s thesis are to 1) evaluate if sponge assemblages reflect the previously defined ecotone between subtropical and warm-temperate biomes in the IRL (Chapter one), 2) determine how porifera communities are associated to their respective environment (temperature, water …

Power Of The People: How Four Gubernatorial Candidates Capitalized On The Collective Identity Found In Social Movements, Gail L. Choate Jan 2023

Power Of The People: How Four Gubernatorial Candidates Capitalized On The Collective Identity Found In Social Movements, Gail L. Choate

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Gubernatorial mansions are historically home to white men. Candidates with contrary identities, such as women and racial minorities have met limited success in their quest for office. Yet the number of women seeking executive level office has increased and these women represent a broader intersectional identity. The low percentage of women governors has been examined in detail, but that analysis largely holds gender as an isolated variable and does not consider the candidates' broader identity. This project posits gender is only one factor of candidate identity called into question when it is nonnormative and varies from historical office holders. I …

Preference For Normative And Informational Social Influence In Evaluation Of Academic Integrity Violation Appeals, Lauren Olson Jan 2023

Preference For Normative And Informational Social Influence In Evaluation Of Academic Integrity Violation Appeals, Lauren Olson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Social influence is sought to distribute information processing for decision-making when data is limited. Undergraduate students selected information with normative or informational wording to supplement a fabricated academic integrity appeal from their university and decided whether to affirm the charge. A novel measure, the Adaptive Scale of Preference for Normative Versus Informational Social Influence (ASPNVISI), was piloted in comparison with a Polish scale of influence preference, individual difference measures in motivation (e.g., Need for Closure), and behavioral measures of influence-seeking. Results did not support the hypotheses that psychological needs would predict behavioral social influence preferences, though Need for Cognition and …

Reading Transness In Ai Narratives: How Artificiality Constructs Transgender Identity, Tristan Sheridan Jan 2023

Reading Transness In Ai Narratives: How Artificiality Constructs Transgender Identity, Tristan Sheridan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Transgender identity and the concept of artificial intelligence are constructed and understood through dichotomies such as natural/unnatural and real/artificial, with each dichotomy informing the other; what is “unnatural” is often deemed to be a mimicry of the “natural,” therefore a false representation of what is “real.” By surveying various classic SF texts and their portrayal of AI characters through the lens of transgender studies—drawing upon scholars including Susan Stryker, Sandy Stone, and Florence Ashley—I assert that artificiality itself is a construction formed by cisnormative ideals and standards to exclude certain others (namely, transgender people) that requires reframing. I examine how …

Self-Touch In Henry James's Major Phase, James Martin Jan 2023

Self-Touch In Henry James's Major Phase, James Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The three novels of Henry James’s “major phase” have alienated many readers in James’s own time and today. I draw on the philosophical school of phenomenology, in particular the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and a recent extension by the philosopher Richard Kearney, to suggest that a lack of self-touch by characters in these novels has contributed in a significant but previously unnoticed way to many readers’ sense that these novels feel frustratingly intangible. I make a comparison to the instances of self-touch in other Edwardian novels to underline the difference. I suggest that James is putting forward a model of …

Solving V.I. Arnold’S Problem About Asymptotic Enumeration Of Morse Functions On The 2-Sphere: A Combinatorial And Analytic Approach With Computer Assisted Proofs, Bishal Dhakal Jan 2023

Solving V.I. Arnold’S Problem About Asymptotic Enumeration Of Morse Functions On The 2-Sphere: A Combinatorial And Analytic Approach With Computer Assisted Proofs, Bishal Dhakal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The goal of this dissertation is to estimate the precise asymptotics for the number of geometric equivalence classes of Morse functions on the 2-sphere. Our approach involves utilizing the Lagrange inversion formula, Cauchy’s coefficient formula, and the saddle point method for the asymptotic analysis of contour integrals to analyze the generating function derived by L. Nicolaescu, expressed as the inverse of an elliptic integral. We utilize complex analysis, nonlinear functional analysis in infinite sequence spaces, and interval arithmetic to write all the necessary MATLAB programs that validate our results. This work answers questions posed by Arnold and Nicolaescu, furthering our …

Singing Frogs, Wormy Interlopers, And Hungry Cannibals: An Investigation Of Complex Life Cycles And Multi Hostparasite Interactions, Sarah R. Goodnight Jan 2023

Singing Frogs, Wormy Interlopers, And Hungry Cannibals: An Investigation Of Complex Life Cycles And Multi Hostparasite Interactions, Sarah R. Goodnight

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Complex life cycles are common across parasite taxa and frequently require trophic transfer of parasites from prey to predator; however, studies on parasite-host interactions often neglect variation in parasite life histories. Here I use two focal freshwater digenetic trematode species, Halipegus occidualis tongueworms and Haematoloechus complexus lungworms, as an empirical system to investigate how parasite life history traits drive host-parasite interactions across the life cycle. To examine how parasite life history and host ecology influence parasite genetic patterns, I characterized the genetic diversity of within-host infrapopulations, as well as overall population genetic structure, of sympatric tongueworm and lungworm populations. Infection …

The Causal Role Of Theta Oscillations In The Frontoparietal Network On Cognitive Flexibility, Yosun Yoon Jan 2023

The Causal Role Of Theta Oscillations In The Frontoparietal Network On Cognitive Flexibility, Yosun Yoon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Cognitive flexibility is crucial for efficient goal-directed behavior, especially in rapidly changing environments. While recent studies have consistently shown enhanced theta power and synchronization in the frontoparietal network during flexible task-switching, direct evidence establishing a causal link between theta-rhythm brain oscillation and cognitive flexibility remains limited. In this study, we applied transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to the frontoparietal network at a theta frequency (6 Hz) with a phase difference of either 0° (inphase) or 180° (antiphase) to explore its impact on task-switching performance. The results showed no significant tACS modulation effects on switch costs or neural oscillatory synchronization in …

The Dynamic Ph Landscape At The Drosophila Nmj Synaptic Cleft And Its Implication In Neurotransmission, Roberto X. Hernandez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The intricate processes governing cellular pH and its impact on protein and cellular function have been extensively explored. However, our understanding of the pH fluctuations that occur during routine cellular activities and their potential to modulate cell function remains, particularly within the highly dynamic pH landscape of a synapse. Investigating the scale, directionality, and temporal characteristics of these activity-dependent pH fluctuations at synapses is of paramount interest, as it carries profound implications for neurotransmitter release and signal transduction. Employing both empirical and computational modeling methods, our research explores the dynamic pH environment within the synaptic cleft of Drosophila glutamatergic motor …

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Β-Hairpin Peptides As Covalent Inhibitors Of The Pd-1/Pd-L1 Immune Checkpoint, Sarah Naylon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Protein─protein interactions (PPIs) are essential for cell─cell interactions and cellular signal transduction, which play a crucial role in various human diseases. PPIs involved in cancer immunology pathways, known as immune checkpoints, have been intensely studied, leading to a new approach to cancer therapy. The PD1:PDL1 interaction is one of the most essential immune checkpoints. Studies on PD1:PDL1 showed over ten clinical monoclonal antibodies (mAb) used to treat cancer patients. Unfortunately, antibodies do not penetrate the tumor microenvironment well, and clearance from the body is slow, leading to unwanted side effects. There is a significant gap in the drug market between …

Is It Time To Switch To Bivalirudin For Ecmo Anticoagulation?, Amir Navaei, Vadim Kostousov, Jun Teruya

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

For decades, unfractionated heparin (hereafter, heparin) has been the primary anticoagulant used for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. More recently, however, bivalirudin, a direct thrombin inhibitor, has emerged as an alternative. This systematic review based on PRISMA guidelines, aims to summarize 16 comparative studies and 8 meta-analysis and review articles published from January, 2011 till May, 2023 which directly compares ECMO courses using heparin versus bivalirudin as the anticoagulant. While this comparison is complicated by the lack of a standardized definition of major bleeding or thrombosis, our overall findings suggest there is no statistical difference between heparin and bivalirudin in …
