Adolescent Well-Being And Exclusionary Discipline: A Resiliency Model, Rachel L. Ballard
Adolescent Well-Being And Exclusionary Discipline: A Resiliency Model, Rachel L. Ballard
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adolescents, especially those with a mental illness, often behave in ways judged to be impulsive, overly emotional, and irresponsible (Gogtay et al., 2004; Lawrence et al., 2015; Tamnes et al., 2010). Many teen behaviors which concern adults can be related to underdeveloped skills or competencies, rate of brain development, or expressions of mental disorders (Casey et al., 2011; Serbin et al., 2011; Spear, 2000). Behaviors commonly associated with adolescence, such as impulsivity, risk-taking, and efforts to fit in with peers, are often seen as a serious threat to school harmony, learning, and student safety, necessitating a disciplinary response from school …
An Examination Of The Legal Responses By United States To Technological Advances In Organized Drug Smuggling, Abdulwahab Aldossary
An Examination Of The Legal Responses By United States To Technological Advances In Organized Drug Smuggling, Abdulwahab Aldossary
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent advances in technology have aided terrorists in their ability to smuggle drugs in order to finance their operations. Drug trading routes have changed and so have methods of transportation and financial transaction. This study investigates the improved technology utilized by transnational organized crime groups and how the present laws and policies address the use of the improved technology for drug smuggling. The study will first look into the current models, such as the Counter-Terrorist Funding and Money Laundering model, and understand its weaknesses regarding drug smuggling within the United States. Moreover, the paper will focus on the current laws …
Explaining Organisational Business Process Adoption Mechanisms - A Critical Realist Perspective On Social Reflexivity And Process Affordances, Andreas Brönnimann
Explaining Organisational Business Process Adoption Mechanisms - A Critical Realist Perspective On Social Reflexivity And Process Affordances, Andreas Brönnimann
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The implementation of new business processes can be problematic for organisations. Employees tend towards reluctant behaviour when confronted with organisational change that requires adoption of new workflows and work tasks. The crucial importance of people affected by change has been highlighted in past research. While the adoption of new processes is beneficial to the organisation, deviations from or rejections of new processes can lead to increased risks, missed process goals, increased waste leading to lost revenue, and other unforeseeable outcomes.
However, the adoption of proposed processes by individuals only is less desirable, because the collective nature of processes requires choreographed …
Deconstructing Motherhood And Fatherhood: An Exploration Of Same-Sex Parents’ Experiences And Construction Of Their Parenting Roles, Jenine M. Giles
Deconstructing Motherhood And Fatherhood: An Exploration Of Same-Sex Parents’ Experiences And Construction Of Their Parenting Roles, Jenine M. Giles
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Dominant discourses regarding motherhood and fatherhood are entrenched in Australian culture and are often implied during public discussions of families with same-sex parents. Using a post structuralist approach, this project aimed to identify how parents in same-sex relationships experience and construct their parenting roles through combinations of dominant and alternative discourses of families, motherhood, and fatherhood. Following ethics approval, participants were recruited primarily through communication with Australian LGBTQIA+ community organisations and publications. Twenty-nine respondents each participated in one one-on-one semi-structured interview, which was audio- and video-recorded with their consent. The participants were eighteen years of age or older, in a …
Comparison Of Methods For Metabolite Extraction From Rat Polycystic Kidney Tissue For Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics, Matthew Oosthuizen
Comparison Of Methods For Metabolite Extraction From Rat Polycystic Kidney Tissue For Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics, Matthew Oosthuizen
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study included a series of experiments focussed on comparing extraction protocols for metabolomics-based analysis of Lewis rat polycystic kidney (LPK) tissue samples and healthy Lewis rat tissue samples. Firstly, the optimal sample loading (mass of tissue) was investigated. Based on previous studies, the appropriate mass to test was approximately 5 mg. Three different volumes of tissue extract equivalent to 1, 2.5 and 5mg of pooled healthy kidney tissue and pooled polycystic kidney tissue were trialled to see how they differed in terms of the number of reproducible, uniquely identified peaks captured after metabolite extraction, derivatisation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry …

Assessing The Core Construct? A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Positive Symptomology In Mmpi-2 Clinical Scale 8 And Restructured Clinical Scale 8, Aubrie R. Musselman
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transition from the MMPI-2 clinical scales to the restructured clinical (RC) scales sparked controversy and debate on several levels of analysis. At the psychometric level, the RC scales have been criticized for alleged construct drift, poor sensitivity, and potential redundancy due to their factor analytic construction. The first issue of construct validity, one of the most essential components of any psychometric tool, was the primary focus of this investigation. Specifically, claims have been made that because the RC scales demonstrate stronger correlations with the content scales than they do with their parent clinical scales, they do not adequately assess …

Admixpipe V3: Facilitating Population Structure Delimitation From Snp Data, Steven M. Mussmann, Marlis R. Douglas, Tyler Chafin, Michael E. Douglas
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Quantifying genetic clusters (=populations) from genotypic data is a fundamental, but non-trivial task for population geneticists that is compounded by: hierarchical population structure, diverse analytical methods, and complex software dependencies. AdmixPipe v3 ameliorates many of these issues in a single bioinformatic pipeline that facilitates all facets of population structure analysis by integrating outputs generated by several popular packages (i.e. CLUMPAK, EvalAdmix). The pipeline interfaces disparate software packages to parse Admixture outputs and conduct EvalAdmix analyses in the context of multimodal population structure results identified by CLUMPAK. We further streamline these tasks by packaging AdmixPipe v3 within a Docker container to …
The Ali Principles Of The Law Of Family Dissolution: Addressing Inequality Through Functional Regulation, Linda C. Mcclain, Douglas Nejamie
The Ali Principles Of The Law Of Family Dissolution: Addressing Inequality Through Functional Regulation, Linda C. Mcclain, Douglas Nejamie
Faculty Scholarship
As part of a volume commemorating the American Law Institute on its centennial, this Essay reflects on the ALI Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution. We show how the Principles’ drafters intervened in cutting-edge issues at a time of flux in family law in ways that elaborated a progressive agenda that would continue to gain traction in the years after the Principles’ publication in 2000. Beginning from the assumption that family law should reflect how people actually live, the drafters developed a functional, rather than formal, approach to legal regulation. Such an approach, they believed, could vindicate commitments to …
Abandoning Animus, Robert L. Tsai
Abandoning Animus, Robert L. Tsai
Faculty Scholarship
This Essay presents a preliminary set of arguments against the legal concept of animus grounded in actual practice. After considering the major reasons advanced in support of the animus approach as well as the main objections, I argue that the end of animus may come once we confront the limits of judicial capacity. First, judges have not been willing or able to resort to the animus rationale to call out bigotry where the evidence of hostility is robust. These failures suggest that projects founded upon judicial review to reduce hateful motivations may be overly optimistic. Second, on the occasions the …
Heterotopic Sports Coaching: Facilitating Epistemic Revolution, Sebastian D. L. Harvey
Heterotopic Sports Coaching: Facilitating Epistemic Revolution, Sebastian D. L. Harvey
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Sports culture, including its traditional coaching practices and norms aligned with orthodox masculinity, has profound negative implications for the mental health and well-being of athletes. To improve athlete mental health and well-being sports coaching must challenge harmful cultural norms. Sports coaching has repeatedly been problematized through a poststructuralist Foucauldian lens; however, predominantly absent from the literature is Foucault’s concept of heterotopia that enables rule-breaking practices to exist. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is two-fold: (a) to explore Foucault’s heterotopia within the context of sports coaching and (b) to demonstrate its use in altering the culture of sports. I begin …
Alexander Hamilton And Administrative Law: How America’S First Great Public Administrator Informs And Challenges Our Understanding Of Contemporary Administrative Law, Rodger D. Citron
Scholarly Works
Alexander Hamilton’s recognition and reputation have soared since the premiere of “Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical about him in 2015. For lawyers, Hamilton’s work on the Federalist Papers and service as the nation’s first Treasury Secretary likely stand out more than other aspects of his extraordinary life. Politics and economics were fundamental concerns addressed by the Framers in a number of ways, including what we now refer to as administrative law—the laws and procedures that guide government departments (or, as we say today, agencies). Indeed, “Hamilton” reminds us that questions of administration and administrative law have been with us since the …
Government Lawyers May Be Prime Candidates For College And University Presidencies, Patricia E. Salkin
Government Lawyers May Be Prime Candidates For College And University Presidencies, Patricia E. Salkin
Scholarly Works
With roughly 4,000 institutions of higher education in the United States, there is a body of literature on leadership in higher education and presidents have been studies and critiqued by biographers and by scholars, yet up until now there has been scarce attention to the documented trend of lawyers leading higher education. Within the subset of lawyer presidents, one major commonality is government law experience in their career prior to the campus presidency. This article explores the unique skills and leadership that government lawyers can offer colleges and universities and provides examples of presidents with former government experience at all …
“The Cruelty Is The Point”: Using Buck V. Bell As A Tool For Diversifying Instruction In The Law School Classroom, Tiffany C. Graham
“The Cruelty Is The Point”: Using Buck V. Bell As A Tool For Diversifying Instruction In The Law School Classroom, Tiffany C. Graham
Scholarly Works
Instructors who are looking for opportunities to expose their students to the ways in which intersectional forms of bias impact policy and legal rules can use Buck v. Bell to explore, for instance, the impact of disability and class on the formation of doctrine. A different intersectional approach might use the discussion of the case as a gateway to a broader conversation about the ways in which race and gender bias structured the implementation of sterilization policies around the nation. Finally, those who wish to examine the global impact of American forms of bias can use this case and the …

The Case Against The Case For Zoning, Michael Lewyn
The Case Against The Case For Zoning, Michael Lewyn
Scholarly Works
Critiques an article defending zoning. In particular, the article notes that a traditional justification for zoning is that it conserves community character. This argument fails because when people priced out of exclusive neighborhoods move to other areas, they change the character of the receiving area. Similarly, the argument that zoning prevents infrastructure from being overloaded overlooks the fact that if people priced out of one area move to a cheaper area, the latter area's infrastructure is equally burdened. A third argument is that zoning allows local governments to push the costs of growth to developers- but the sluggish growth of …
Zoning And The Bar Exam, Michael Lewyn
Zoning And The Bar Exam, Michael Lewyn
Scholarly Works
The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE), which develops American bar examinations, recently released a proposed outline of the subjects to be tested on future examinations. NCBE's property outline omits zoning law. This article argues that the NCBE's proposal is unwise, because zoning law is more frequently litigated than many subjects included in the NCBE outline.
Codifying Antisemitism, Mark Goldfeder
Codifying Antisemitism, Mark Goldfeder
Scholarly Works
Antisemitic harassment and discrimination are unlawful in many contexts, but without a standard definition of what 'antisemitism' includes, that idea is almost meaningless. This has led to an equal protection problem for members of the Jewish community, which is why states across the country have started to pass laws adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance ("IHRA") Definition of antisemitism for use in clarifying the application of existing legal protections for Jewish people from crime and discrimination. Thus far, the bills that have passed have for the most part been overwhelmingly bipartisan, but there have been minor pockets of pushback in …
Once The Jury Sees It, The Jury Can’T Unsee It: The Challenge Trial Judges Face When Authenticating Video Evidence In The Age Of Deepfakes, Taurus Myhand
Scholarly Works
The proliferation of deepfake videos has resulted in rapid improvements in the technology used to create them. Although the use of fake videos and images are not new, advances in artificial intelligence have made deepfakes easier to make and harder to detect. Basic human perception is no longer sufficient to detect deepfakes. Yet, under the current construction of the Federal Rules of Evidence, trials judges are expected to do just that. Trial judges face a daunting challenge when applying the current evidence authentication standards to video evidence in this new reality of widely available deepfake videos. This article examines the …
Predicting Lower Millennial Turnover Intentions: Examining Work Benefits Factors And Organizational Environment Factors As Sets, Lyric W. Fortson
Predicting Lower Millennial Turnover Intentions: Examining Work Benefits Factors And Organizational Environment Factors As Sets, Lyric W. Fortson
Master's Theses
Millennials make up the majority of the working population now, however organizations are struggling to retain them, as they tend to turnover in their job roles after an average of just a few years. The purpose of this study was to examine what workplace variables could predict lower turnover intentions in Millennials. This study examined a set of two work benefits factors, satisfaction with salary and satisfaction with career advancement, and a set of three organizational environment factors, satisfaction with feedback, satisfaction with supervisor, and satisfaction with work-life balance, as predictors of lower turnover intentions in Millennials. A survey was …
Bubble Detection Under Microgravity In A Closed-Loop Microchannel Perfusion System, Max S. Kim
Bubble Detection Under Microgravity In A Closed-Loop Microchannel Perfusion System, Max S. Kim
Master's Theses
Altered gravitational conditions result in changes in biological function. Studies in microgravity have shown irregularities in fluid redistribution within the vascular system. In order to study these irregularities, a cell culture perfusion system is necessary. Bubbles can proliferate in closed-loop systems and are detrimental to cells. However, the effects of bubbles in a closed-loop system in microgravity are unknown. Accordingly, the hypothesis of this investigation is that the absence of a constant-direction gravitational body force will exacerbate the presence of bubbles in a closed-loop microfluidic perfusion system. In order to examine the hypothesis, a closed-loop microfluidic cell culture perfusion system …
Accident Prediction On E-Bikes Using Computer Vision, Rohith Puvvala Subramanyam
Accident Prediction On E-Bikes Using Computer Vision, Rohith Puvvala Subramanyam
Master's Theses
Micro Mobility refers to small, confined pace range, and lightweight modes oftransportation, which include e-Bikes and e-Scooters. Micro Mobility riders are prone to harm and deadly injuries on city streets. Statistics show that on average 27 out of 82 (33%) humans, in the United States get injured every day in e-motorcycle injuries, which is rapidly increasing as compared to previous years. The current accident prediction strategies have been rather technically complicated to be incorporated onto micromobility vehicles which are lighter in weight and smaller in size. Current strategies bring key challenges to light. First, as micro-mobility vehicles are small and …
Where And Why Do Ecosystem-Based Adaption Projects Take Place In California?, Daniel K. Jacobson
Where And Why Do Ecosystem-Based Adaption Projects Take Place In California?, Daniel K. Jacobson
Master's Theses
California is experiencing the harmful impacts of climate change and will continue to do so for generations. As a result, municipalities have been forced to turn to adaptation solutions to help local residents adjust to inevitable impacts such as sea level rise, extreme heat, and extreme weather. Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA), the use of nature and ecosystem services to help human systems adapt to climate change impacts, is an increasingly popular, cost-effective, and multi-benefit adaptation strategy. While prior research has shown that other forms of adaptation, often referred to as ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ strategies, disproportionately benefit whiter and wealthier populations, there …
Advertisement Blindness In Social Media Apps, Nora Szladovics
Advertisement Blindness In Social Media Apps, Nora Szladovics
Master's Theses
Advertisement blindness (ad blindness) is a general term that refers to people’s tendency to automatically and unconsciously ignore advertisements. The phenomenon was originally identified in banner ads, then later in text and native ads on websites. Today, social media is an effective tool for advertisers, yet research investigating users’ interaction habits with social media ads in mobile applications (apps) is unexplored. This study expands the ad blindness concept to mobile social media apps, examining its presence and whether target position has an influence. Further, it investigates the relationship between social media use and ad blindness. Employing a novel approach, the …
Reconstructing Auditory Evoked Cortical Response With Fewer Trials, Zoey Y. Zhang
Reconstructing Auditory Evoked Cortical Response With Fewer Trials, Zoey Y. Zhang
Master's Theses
Auditory evoked fields (AEF) paradigm is a common research tool to study human auditory responses by using Magnetoencephalography (MEG), a neuroimaging tool. AEF paradigm requires repetition over many trials to achieve adequate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), but Autistic children and some other populations cannot tolerate prolonged exam time due to various reasons. To address these challenges, this project uses a novel machine learning algorithm, Champagne with baseline noise learning, to reconstruct AEF data with fewer trials (80%, 60%, 40%, 20%) but produce the same results as using all AEF trials (100%). The results show that this novel machine learning algorithm can …
