Executive Functioning Among The Karyotypes In Turner Syndrome And Implications For Interventions, Sara Scull Jan 2023

Executive Functioning Among The Karyotypes In Turner Syndrome And Implications For Interventions, Sara Scull

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic disorder seen in phenotypically female (pf) individuals who have either a complete or partial absence of the second sex (X) chromosome. TS includes different karyotypes, and it presents with a variety of phenotypic and genotypic features. In general, the neuropsychological profiles for individuals diagnosed suggest that TS can contribute to challenges in various aspects of daily life, including social and emotional functioning. With regard to academic performances, individuals with TS often present with relative strengths in a range of verbal abilities and relative weakness in visual-spatial/perceptual abilities, nonverbal memory, motor function, processing speed, executive …

Relationship Goals: How Do Relational Therapists Conceptualize Cases And Treatment Plan When Working With Consensually Non-Monogamous Clients?, Caitlyn Burns Jan 2023

Relationship Goals: How Do Relational Therapists Conceptualize Cases And Treatment Plan When Working With Consensually Non-Monogamous Clients?, Caitlyn Burns

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study aimed to explore how relational therapists in the United States conceptualize cases and treatment plan when working with consensually non-monogamous clients and how dominant discourses about relationships (mononormativity) influence relational therapists during this process through a queer theory lens. This was a grounded theory study and surveyed a sample of thirty relational therapists or therapists-in- training. Results showed relational therapists conduct conceptualization and treatment planning through a two-part process. Therapists intend to treat CNM clients the same as any other client, but are unable to do so due to dominant discourses of mononormativity. Furthermore, mononormative discourses influenced relational …

China Informs A 21st Century Definition Of The Rule Of Law, Ashley Topel Jan 2023

China Informs A 21st Century Definition Of The Rule Of Law, Ashley Topel

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

Politicians, lawyers, and academics alike have long been fascinated with the rule of law, but this fascination has never immunized them from the challenges of defining just what the rule of law is. Indeed, defining the rule of law by citing an example, such as the United Kingdom or the United States, remains easier than articulating why those nations have the rule of law and how other nations can advance the ideal within their own boundaries. Still, modern scholarship has led to the creation of three alternative theories of the rule of law–formalist, procedural, and substantive conceptions. A formalist theory …

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

The article provides an in-depth comparative legal analysis of the fundamental digital trade provisions in three modern trade agreements: the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (CP-TPP), Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP), and Joint Statement Initiative on electronic commerce (eJSI) draft text. It features new, diverse regulatory priorities and approaches to govern digital trade. The comparative analysis will enable policymakers and civil society to appreciate the underlying regulatory concerns in negotiating digital trade agreements. The analysis aims to support an advancement of such digital trade provisions and make these deliberations more inclusive in future.

Second Chance Pell Experiment: How The United States Is Starting To Recognize Education As A Right, Brittany Walker Jan 2023

Second Chance Pell Experiment: How The United States Is Starting To Recognize Education As A Right, Brittany Walker

Human Rights Brief

For decades, education as a right has been an issue between U.S. citizens and U.S. courts. U.S. courts maintain that education is not a right, as it was not explicitly stated in the U.S. Constitution. Since the U.S. Constitution is silent about education, U.S. courts have applied the 14th Amendment to defer educational matters, such as compulsory school requirements, to each state. Currently, education in the United States is generally a right until middle school. After middle school, the American government allows parents and students to determine whether additional education is necessary in their situation. This view causes disparities for …

The Failure Of The Italian Government To Honor The Human Rights Of Migrants, John Kerins Jan 2023

The Failure Of The Italian Government To Honor The Human Rights Of Migrants, John Kerins

Human Rights Brief

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Parliament, feckless in the harsh waters of European politics, looks to be breaking on the very beaches where Allied forces once landed almost 80 years ago. The small island of Lampedusa remains a pricking thorn in the Italian government’s side, further complicating the testy waters with migrants coming in from the Mediterranean. To solve this, the Italian government has begun to violate the human rights of migrants and workers alike. Giorgia Meloni’s government has called for an ‘EU Naval Blockade’ of the Mediterranean, prompting outcry from human rights groups who correctly see what the rest …

Principles On Effective Investigative Interviews: A New Instrument Of International Law, Juan E. Mendez, Matthew Ilsley Jan 2023

Principles On Effective Investigative Interviews: A New Instrument Of International Law, Juan E. Mendez, Matthew Ilsley

Human Rights Brief

International law absolutely prohibits torture and ill-treatment, yet such abuses remain prevalent and widespread. It most frequently occurs in the questioning of individuals by law enforcement, intelligence officials, and military personnel in the context of “fighting crime,” obtaining confessions, controlling detainees, and “counterterrorism.” The “Torture Memorandums,” exemplifying the deeply misguided practices used in the global fight against terror following the attacks of September 11, 2001, illuminated the pervasiveness of these practices.

Sustainable Development Goals, Between Politics And Soft Law: The Emergence Of “Political Normativity” In International Law, Ilias Bantekas, Katerina Akestoridi Jan 2023

Sustainable Development Goals, Between Politics And Soft Law: The Emergence Of “Political Normativity” In International Law, Ilias Bantekas, Katerina Akestoridi

Emory International Law Review

International lawyers tend to draw sharp distinctions between law and politics. Yet, despite the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its predecessors being a product of politics, the commitments undertaken therefrom suggest a new brand of politics where functionality overrides the search for normative characteristics. The political dimension of the SDGs overshadows its legal dimension because the implementation of the key stakeholders’ political commitments is crucial in achieving the SDGs’ stated aims. As international law and international relations are moving towards universal common interests and away from strict international normativity, the SDGs can best be described as a hybrid between soft …

Crossing The Abyss: A Comparative Analysis Of The Enforceability Of Preliminary Agreements, Marta Infantino, Larry A. Dimatteo, Jingen Wang, Eleni Zervogianni Jan 2023

Crossing The Abyss: A Comparative Analysis Of The Enforceability Of Preliminary Agreements, Marta Infantino, Larry A. Dimatteo, Jingen Wang, Eleni Zervogianni

Emory International Law Review

A major unresolved issue in international business transactions relates to the enforceability of preliminary agreements. Preliminary agreements cover a long list of instruments commonly used in most sectors of the economy. The common presumption is that these agreements are not enforceable. The correct answer is much more nuanced. For example, a preliminary agreement may be held to be unenforceable but at the same time be the basis for legal liability. There are strong differences between the civil and common laws on the issues of good faith negotiations and the enforceability of preliminary agreements, but there is also sustained uncertainty within …

Smart Regulation: Lessons From The Artificial Intelligence Act, John Hillman Jan 2023

Smart Regulation: Lessons From The Artificial Intelligence Act, John Hillman

Emory International Law Review

The European Union (EU) has recently announced that it will consider a proposal to systematically regulate artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This regulation will add to the legacy of other data regulation acts adopted in the EU and move the EU closer to a comprehensive framework through which it can address rapidly evolving technologies like AI. The United States has yet to implement data regulation or AI regulation legislation at the federal level. This inaction by the United States could negatively impact global cooperation with the EU and China and innovation within the United States. The United States is currently the …

Extending The Nno Ballistic Limit Equation To Foam-Filled Dual-Wall Systems, William P. Schonberg Jan 2023

Extending The Nno Ballistic Limit Equation To Foam-Filled Dual-Wall Systems, William P. Schonberg

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A key component in the quantitative assessment of the risk posed to spacecraft by the micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) environment is frequently referred to as a ballistic limit equation (BLE). A frequently used BLE for dual-wall configurations (which are commonly used on spacecraft to protect them against the MMOD environment) is the New Non-Optimum, or "NNO", BLE. In design applications where a BLE is needed for a new structural system that has not yet been tested, but resembles to a fair degree a dual-wall system, it is common practice to equivalence the materials, thicknesses, etc., of the new system …

Artificial Intelligence In Government: Risks And Challenges Of Algorithmic Governance In The Administrative State, Jose Vida Fernandez

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This article analyzes the legal implications of using artificial intelligence in government and how it is challenging the foundations of the administrative state. It begins by demonstrating that a new model of government is emerging, based on information and intelligence (i-Gov). To understand the nature and scope of this new i-Gov model, this article will explain what artificial intelligence really is and analyze the applications that are currently being carried out in the US and the EU. Next, it will review the regulatory framework that is emerging that regulates government use of artificial intelligence in both the US and the …

Qatar V. Uae-- The Weight Of Words, Samantha H. Hughes Jan 2023

Qatar V. Uae-- The Weight Of Words, Samantha H. Hughes

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

In 2021, the International Court of Justice decided, in Qatar v. United Arab Emirates, that the term "national origin" does not include current nationality as used in the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination ("CERD"). While the Court's decision is supported by various legal arguments, the majority's approach seems to stray from practices regarding interpreting ambiguous terms, and is contradictory to some of its earlier opinions. This Note uses CERD, other International Court of Justice opinions, and the dissenting opinions to the Qatar v. United Arab Emirates decision to critically analyze the strength of …

Comparative Immigration Policies For Unaccompanied Minors: A Shared Challenge, Diana Ramirez Jan 2023

Comparative Immigration Policies For Unaccompanied Minors: A Shared Challenge, Diana Ramirez

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

Unaccompanied minors from the Northern-Triangle and Mexico have been arriving at the United States border in large numbers over the past decade as a result of forced migration movements. Although the arrival of unaccompanied minors is not a new phenomenon in the United States, recent administrations have responded in ways that have made the country's immigration system increasingly hostile towards them.

However, this issue is not exclusive to the United States. Unaccompanied minors traveling alone to Europe, Australia, South Africa, Canada, or the United States face similar dangers and are particularly vulnerable to abuse and trafficking. Regardless of jurisdiction, the …

Blockchain And The Right To Good Administration: Adding Blocks To Or Blocking Of The Globalization Of Good Administration?, Migle Laukyte Jan 2023

Blockchain And The Right To Good Administration: Adding Blocks To Or Blocking Of The Globalization Of Good Administration?, Migle Laukyte

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

In this article, the author addresses the complex and multifaceted relationship between the right to good administration enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the uses of blockchain technology by the public administration, which is in charge of making the right to good administration real. The opportunities and threats come hand in hand, and there is an urgent need to push forward a public debate on the uses and misuses of blockchain to guarantee public services, so much so that many aspects of blockchain are not compatible with citizens’ expectations in relation to the public …

INTRODUCTION: Vascular damage in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has shown conflicting findings particularly when analyzing longitudinal data. We introduce white matter hyperintensity (WMH) longitudinal morphometric analysis (WLMA) that quantifies WMH expansion as the distance from lesion voxels to a region of interest boundary. METHODS: WMH segmentation maps were derived from 270 longitudinal fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) ADNI images. WLMA was performed on five data driven WMH patterns with distinct spatial distributions. Amyloid accumulation was evaluated with WMH expansion across the five WMH patterns. RESULTS: The preclinical group had significantly greater expansion in the posterior ventricular WM compared to controls. Amyloid significantly …

Lasa: Location-Aware Scheduling Algorithm In Industrial Iot Networks With Mobile Nodes, Marco Pettorali, Francesca Righetti, Carlo Vallati, Sajal K. Das, Giuseppe Anastasi

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Synchronized Single-hop Multiple Gateway (SHMG) is a framework recently proposed to support mobility into 6TiSCH, the standard network architecture defined for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) deployments. SHMG supports industrial applications with stringent requirements by adopting the Shared-Downstream Dedicated-Upstream (SD-DU) scheduling policy, which allocates to Mobile Nodes (MNs) a set of dedicated transmission opportunities for uplink data. Such allocation is performed on all the Border Routers (BRs) of the network without considering the location of MNs. Transmission opportunities are reserved also in BRs far from the current location of the MN, resulting in a waste of resources that limits …

The Clinical Utility Of The Brief-2 Emotional Regulation Index (Eri) In Predicting Psychiatric Disorders Comorbid With Pediatric Adhd, William Alexander Anastasiadis Jan 2023

The Clinical Utility Of The Brief-2 Emotional Regulation Index (Eri) In Predicting Psychiatric Disorders Comorbid With Pediatric Adhd, William Alexander Anastasiadis

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent research suggests that consideration of emotional regulation (ER) may help assess psychiatric disorders that commonly co-occur with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In clinical settings, ER in youth is typically assessed using an informant report such as the Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF). Advances in psychometric assessments, such as the recently updated BRIEF-2, assist clinicians in diagnosing conditions comorbid with ADHD. There is little research on the BRIEF-2, with even less considering the new Emotional Regulation Index ( ERI ) on the BRIEF-2. The present study examined the clinical utility of the BRIEF-2 ERI and its associated scales in …

The Vulnerability And Resilience Of Seagrass Ecosystems To Marine Heatwaves In New Zealand: A Remote Sensing Analysis Of Seascape Metrics Using Planetscope Imagery, Ken Joseph E. Clemente, Mads S. Thomsen, Richard C. Zimmerman Jan 2023

Zimmerman

OES Faculty Publications

Seagrasses are foundation species that provide ecosystem functions and services, including increased biodiversity, sediment retention, carbon sequestration, and fish nursery habitat. However, anthropogenic stressors that reduce water quality, impose large-scale climate changes, and amplify weather patterns, such as marine heatwaves, are altering seagrass meadow configurations. Quantifying large-scale trends in seagrass distributions will help evaluate the impacts of climate drivers on their functions and services. Here, we quantified spatiotemporal dynamics in abundances and configurations of intertidal and shallow subtidal seagrass (Zostera muelleri) meadows in 20 New Zealand (NZ) estuaries that span a 5-year period (mid/late 2016–early 2022) just before, …

Systemic Analyses Of Radiocarbon Ages Of Coexisting Planktonic Foraminifera, Jörg Lippold, Julia Gottschalk, Jean Lynch-Stieglitz, Matthew W. Schmidt, Sönke Szidat, Andre Bahr Jan 2023

Systemic Analyses Of Radiocarbon Ages Of Coexisting Planktonic Foraminifera, Jörg Lippold, Julia Gottschalk, Jean Lynch-Stieglitz, Matthew W. Schmidt, Sönke Szidat, Andre Bahr

OES Faculty Publications

We compare radiocarbon (14C) ages of coexisting planktonic foraminifera species from sediment cores VM12-107 and KNR166-2-26JPC from the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean for three time periods (Holocene, Heinrich Stadial 1, last glacial maximum). We find a maximum inter-species difference of 1200 14C yr. On average, the 14C ages deviate by ∼300 yr between Globigerinoides ruber and other species. In most cases, this exceeds the analytical uncertainty range of the measurements and thus renders the choice of species for generating age models as important as sample weight. While modern stratified water-column profiles imply an increase in 14C …
