Clinical Practice Skills For Incorporating Animal-Assisted Therapy In Occupational Therapy, Erin Wilhelm
Clinical Practice Skills For Incorporating Animal-Assisted Therapy In Occupational Therapy, Erin Wilhelm
Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstones
The aim of my capstone project was to advance the field of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and promote the incorporation of AAT within occupational therapy (OT) services. Existing research notably supports the implementation of AAT in OT practice in many settings and for a wide variety of diagnoses to promote occupational performance, build therapeutic rapport, and encourage motivation and engagement in therapy, but stronger evidence is needed to promote the incorporation of AAT (Andreason et al., 2017; Fine et al., 2019b). Despite the growth of AAT over the past two decades, there are few resources tailored specifically to the implementation of …
Applications Of Causal Inference Methods For The Estimation Of Effects Of Bone Marrow Transplant And Prescription Drugs On Survival Of Aplastic Anemia Patients, Yesha M. Patel
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This dissertation provides an in-depth exploration into the treatment effectiveness for aplastic anemia using causal inference methods, structured around three pivotal research papers. Each paper contributes to a nuanced understanding of treatment impacts, specifically focusing on bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and prescription drugs, and the identification of optimal treatment strategies.
The first paper, "Causal Inference Analysis for Assessing the Effect of Bone Marrow Transplantation on the One-Year Survival of Adult and Pediatric Aplastic Anemia Patients," sets the foundation. It examines the short-term effectiveness of BMT in both adult and pediatric patients, providing crucial insights into how this treatment affects survival …
Novel Implementation Of Additive Manufacturing To Visualize The Human Brain Connectome, Greg Tyler
Novel Implementation Of Additive Manufacturing To Visualize The Human Brain Connectome, Greg Tyler
Computational and Data Sciences (MS) Theses
Additive manufacturing (AM) is an emerging technology with diverse areas of application. In this paper we explore a new application of AM that uses a subset of AM known as 3D printing, to create real life models of the human connectome. The human connectome is a color coded map of the connections in the human brain where directions are indicated by colors and the density of connections are indicated by color intensity.
There are several different algorithms for mapping the connections and describing the output. The Neu- roImaging Tools and Resource Collaboratory (NITRC) provides one such algorithm. It uses probabilistic …

Disinfection Of Foodborne Bacteria Using The Contamination Sanitization Inspection And Disinfection (Csi-D) Device, Jennifer Mccoy Sanders
Food Science (MS) Theses
Foodborne pathogens, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and Listeria monocytogenes, are major causes of gastrointestinal disease globally. The Contamination Sanitization Inspection and Disinfection (CSI-D) device is a new handheld fluorescence-based imaging system designed to disinfect food contact surfaces contaminated with microorganisms using ultraviolet-C (UVC) illumination. This study aimed to determine the optimal parameters for the disinfection of foodborne bacteria using the CSI-D device. The following bacterial strains were tested: generic E. coli; enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) O157:H7; enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) O78:H11; S. enterica serotypes Enteritidis, Newport, Typhimurium, and Javiana; and L. monocytogenes serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b, and 4b …
Keeping And Challenging Familial Attachments: The Bakla Within Contemporary Mainstream Filipino Film, Abraham James A. Mata
Keeping And Challenging Familial Attachments: The Bakla Within Contemporary Mainstream Filipino Film, Abraham James A. Mata
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Throughout Filipino television and film, it is difficult to ignore the almost always apparent bakla. The bakla, often portrayed as either an effeminate gay man or a trans woman, largely appears as a side character in many Filipino films. Many depictions of this queer figure in the past have cast them as merely comedic relief or perverted figures. However, within the past two decades of the 21st century, many Filipino films have been produced with a central bakla character. Through an analysis of five mainstream films from the years of 2013-2023, this project is seeking to answer how mainstream depictions …

Monitoring The Competitiveness Of The Australia Awards, Debbie Wong, Yung Nietschke
Monitoring The Competitiveness Of The Australia Awards, Debbie Wong, Yung Nietschke
Global education monitoring
The Australia Awards are prestigious international scholarships and short courses funded by the Australian Government to contribute to the achievement of development outcomes and the promotion of prosperity, resilience and stability in partner countries. The closure of Australia’s borders during COVID-19 caused a decline in international student numbers and prompted concerns about Australia’s competitiveness in the global scholarship market. This paper provides a framework and proposed methodology for systematic monitoring of Australia Awards competitiveness to provide DFAT’s Global Education and Scholarships section with data to inform ongoing policy and programming decisions. This paper uses theories of capital as a conceptual …
Genomics-Based Taxonomic Rearrangement Of Achlyodini And Carcharodini (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae: Pyrginae), Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Jinhui Shen, Leina Song, Nick V. Grishin
Genomics-Based Taxonomic Rearrangement Of Achlyodini And Carcharodini (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae: Pyrginae), Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Jinhui Shen, Leina Song, Nick V. Grishin
Insecta Mundi
Genomic analysis of Pyrginae Burmeister, 1878 (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae Latreille, 1809) with an emphasis on the tribes Achlyodini Burmeister, 1878 and Carcharodini Verity, 1940 reveals many inconsistencies between the resulting phylogeny and the current classification. These problems are corrected by proposing new taxa, changing the ranks of others, or synonymizing them, and transferring species between genera. As a result, five subtribes, one genus, 20 subgenera, and one species are proposed as new: Cyclosemiina Grishin, new subtribe (type genus Cyclosemia Mabille, 1878), Ilianina Grishin, new subtribe (type genus Iliana E. Bell, 1937), Nisoniadina Grishin, new subtribe (type genus Nisoniades Hübner, [1819]), …
Defensive Behaviors Of The Mealybug Nipaecoccus Nipae (Maskell, 1893) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) And The Green Lacewing Ceraeochrysa Claveri (Navás, 1911) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), With Videos Of Dorsal Packet Loading And Mealybug Ostiole Function, Erin C. Powell
Insecta Mundi
The interactions between the lacewing Ceraeochrysa claveri (Navás) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) larva and the coconut mealybug Nipaecoccus nipae (Maskell) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) were recorded. The third-instar lacewing larva constructed a dorsal packet using mealybug wax from both male pupal cases and the bodies of adult females. Surprisingly, live nymphs were also frequently placed into the dorsal packet. Prey mealybugs were discarded and not incorporated into the packet after consumption. When disturbed, adult female mealybugs reflex bled from their dorsal ostioles, contacting the mouthparts of the lacewing. The lacewing quickly retreated to clean the mouthparts on the substrate, providing further evidence that ostiolar …

A century and a half since the time of Hewitson, we are experiencing a renaissance in species discovery fueled by whole genome sequencing. A large-scale genomic analysis of Hesperiidae Latreille, 1809 (Lepidoptera), including primary type specimens, reveals a deluge of species new to science. One hundred of them (one in a new genus) are described here from the New World (type localities are given in parenthesis): Drephalys (Drephalys) diovalis Grishin, new species (Ecuador: Napo), Euriphellus panador Grishin, new species (Ecuador: Esmeraldas), Euriphellus panamicus Grishin, new species (Panama: Panama), Cecropterus (Thorybes) viridissimus Grishin, new species (Ecuador: Zamora-Chinchipe), …
Where Is The Action? Choosing Securities Joinder Action Over Securities Class Action In Korea, Joon Buhm Lee
Where Is The Action? Choosing Securities Joinder Action Over Securities Class Action In Korea, Joon Buhm Lee
Journal of International Business and Law
Investor plaintiffs, or the attorneys who represented such plaintiffs, could pursue securities fraud claims as a joinder or class action after Korea enacted the Securities-related Class Action Act of 2005 (“SCAA”). Nevertheless, as time revealed, not many class action cases were filed. Research shows that investors are filing securities fraud actions as joinder actions. Not only are the investor plaintiffs filing, but many of them are winning. This article argues that such filings are rational choices made by risk-neutral plaintiffs and plaintiffs’ attorneys. Because the rules for filing a joinder action and a class action differ in various aspects, the …

A universal, and possibly one of the most frequent symptomatic motives to explore professional medical attention, is pain. Pain is defined as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage” by The International Association for the Study of Pain. Additionally, over the years, local field potential (LFP) has grown in interest for many researchers. The LFP is known to demonstrate the activity of neurons around the recording electrode in a localized area, and can be subdivided into 5 frequency bands of delta (0.1 – 3 Hz), theta (3 – 7 …

From Leanstore To Learnedstore: Using A Learned Index To Improve Database Index Search, Sujit Maharjan
From Leanstore To Learnedstore: Using A Learned Index To Improve Database Index Search, Sujit Maharjan
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive
In the realm of database systems, optimizing B+-tree index performance is of paramount importance to overall database performance. LeanStore, a high-performance OLTP storage engine, has extensively optimized its in-memory B+-tree component as well as its B+-tree -indexed database on the disk. However, B+-tree's lookup time increases linearly with the tree height. This is especially problematic when all or part of its lookup path is on the disk. Recently proposed learned index technique has the potential to significantly improve the performance of the B+-tree -based index by predicting location of the search key, instead of the level-by-Ievel path walk. However, this …

The Radical Power Of Education, Arindam Nandi, Nicole Haberland, Thoai Ngo
Gender, Education, Justice, and Equity (GEJE)
When education works, people thrive and societies flourish alongside economies. We have made real progress on primary enrollment on the global scale, with 90% of children enrolling in school. However, completion rates lag far behind—only 77% of children complete lower secondary school and 58% complete upper secondary. Those numbers decline sharply for those living in poverty, for girls, and for Indigenous communities, with 44% of adolescent girls in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) either dropping out of primary school or never attending at all.
Low educational attainment and illiteracy exclude children from the freedoms that come with learning and also …

“This Forum Is Not A Democracy”: The Role Of Norms And Moderation In Cultivating (Anti)Democratic Incel Identities, Jennifer Forestal
Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Incels (short for “involuntarily celibate”) have recently gained notoriety for their aggressive, often violent, misogyny, yet incels were not al- ways an antidemocratic social group. They thus pose a challenge for thinking about democracy and identity in (anonymous) digital environments: how can we create spaces for marginalized social groups while ensuring the resulting identities remain democratic? While many scholars point to technological affordances or corporate content moderation policies as providing some solutions, in this article I propose a more democratic approach. Drawing from incel wikis and archived forum posts from two early incel communities—IncelSupport and LoveShy—I argue that a community’s …

The Open Web Versus Dark Web: Examining User Engagement In Online Illicit Opioid Markets, Ciara Wildes
The Open Web Versus Dark Web: Examining User Engagement In Online Illicit Opioid Markets, Ciara Wildes
Honors Theses
The state of the modern-day opioid epidemic produces the need to understand how people choose to engage in opioid markets on the web. Specifically, it is important to understand why people choose to use the open web rather than the dark web to engage in online opioid markets. Applying the theoretical frameworks of Cohen and Felson’s (1979) Routine Activity Theory and Clarke’s (1999) CRAVED principles, the decision making processes of individuals was examined using three separate Experimental Vignette Methodology surveys (EVM) administered through Connect CloudResearch. The decision-making processes of individuals engaging in online illicit opioid markets was measured using a …

Searching For Standing: Are Improper Acquisition Or Threatened Misappropriation Of Trade Secrets Cognizable Injuries Sufficient For Article Iii Standing?, Josh J. Leopold
University of Chicago Law Review
Trade secret litigation is on the rise. Meanwhile, modern standing cases have forced courts and commentators to reevaluate what sorts of legal injuries bring factual injuries with them, such that federal courts can adjudicate them as a “case” or “controversy” under Article III of the Constitution.
his Comment studies the intersection of Article III standing and federal trade secret law. It is the first piece to provide a taxonomy of trade secret violations and factual injuries in the shadow of standing doctrine’s demand for an injury-in-fact. This Comment submits a bold yet plausible claim: Article III standing should be in …
Seizure Or Due Process? Section 1983 Enforcement Against Pretrial Detention Caused By Fabricated Evidence, Jorge Pereira
Seizure Or Due Process? Section 1983 Enforcement Against Pretrial Detention Caused By Fabricated Evidence, Jorge Pereira
University of Chicago Law Review
Can an individual who was held in pretrial detention but not criminally convicted as a result of fabricated evidence raise a due process claim under 42 U.S.C. § 1983? The answer is unclear. In 2017, the Supreme Court in Manuel v. City of Joliet held that claims for unlawful pretrial detention are governed by the Fourth Amendment. Since then, the Seventh Circuit has asserted that the Fourth Amendment is the only source of redress under § 1983 for wrongful pretrial detention caused by fabricated evidence. By contrast, several circuits have opined that Manuel does not foreclose the possibility that individuals …

Closing A Loophole In Exchange Act Enforcement: A Framework For Assessing The Enforceability Of Delaware Forum Selection Bylaws In The Context Of Derivative § 14(A) Claims, Amanda K. Williams
University of Chicago Law Review
Over the past decade, a growing number of Delaware corporations have adopted forum selection bylaws. These bylaws often require that all derivative claims against a company’s officers or directors be resolved in Delaware state courts. But what happens when a shareholder brings a derivative claim that Delaware courts do not have jurisdiction to adjudicate?
This issue arises when Delaware forum selection bylaws are applied to derivative claims arising under § 14(a) of the Securities and Exchange Act of 1934, because the Exchange Act instructs that only federal courts may resolve such claims. In this context, Delaware corporations may seek to …

Older adults often suffer an accidental fall when navigating challenging surfaces during common locomotor tasks, such as walking and ascending stairs. This study examined the effect of slick and uneven surfaces on lower limb joint work in older and younger adults while walking and ascending stairs. Fifteen young (18–25 years) and 12 older (>65 years) adults had stance phase positive limb and joint work quantified during walking and stair ascent tasks on a normal, slick, and uneven surface, which was then submitted to a two-way mixed model ANOVA for analysis. The stair ascent required greater limb, and hip, knee, …
