The Ups And Downs Of Early Dark Energy Solutions To The Hubble Tension: A Review Of Models, Hints And Constraints Circa 2023, V. Poulin, Tristan L. Smith, T. Karwal

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We review the current status of Early Dark Energy (EDE) models proposed to resolve the “Hubble tension”, the discrepancy between “direct” measurements of the current expansion rate of the Universe and “indirect measurements” for which the values inferred rely on the Λ CDM cosmological model calibrated on early-universe data. EDE refers to a new form of dark energy active at early times (typically a scalar-field), that quickly dilutes away at a redshift close to matter-radiation equality. The role of EDE is to decrease the sound horizon by briefly contributing to the Hubble rate in the pre-recombination era. We summarize the …

Enhancing Indoors Robotic Traversability Estimation With Sensor Fusion, Christos Sevastopoulos Dec 2023

Enhancing Indoors Robotic Traversability Estimation With Sensor Fusion, Christos Sevastopoulos

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Generally speaking, traversability estimation illustrates the ability to navigate or move through a particular environment (indoors or outdoors). Indoor environments are governed by uncertainty and stochasticity arising from their complex structures encapsulating both static elements like furniture and walls, as well as entities such as moving humans. In our research, we underline the importance of blending semantic and spatial information for ensuring secure navigation for a mobile robot. We show that RGB sensors suffer from constrained situational awareness of the surroundings, thus highlighting the need to incorporate spatial and geometric data, which can collaborate synergistically to enhance overall perception and …

Cognition is the mental process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and senses. Fatigue is a loss in cognitive or physical performance due to physiological factors such as insufficient sleep, long work hours, stress, and physical exertion. It adversely affects the human body and can slow reaction times, reduce attention, and limit short-term memory. Hence, there is a need to monitor a person's state to avoid extreme fatigue conditions that can result in physiological complications. However, tools to understand and assess fatigue are minimal. This thesis primarily focuses on building an experimental setup that induces cognitive fatigue (CF) …

Investigation Of Rate Pressure Product As A Metric To Quantify Cardiac Workload In Sleep Apnea Events, Carlos Cruz

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

An investigation on the use of rate pressure product (RPP) to measure the cardiac workload in sleep apnea patients is presented. RPP is the product of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate (HR). The application of RPP to quantify cardiac workload is combined with the detection of respiratory events occurring in close proximity (less than 30 seconds apart). These two combined factors provide a unique framework for analyzing sleep apnea events and are the primary novelty of the study. Close proximity events are referred to as respiratory event chains (RECs). Statistical analyses were conducted on various RPP metrics as …

External Debt Pass-Through To Inflation In Nigeria, Emmanuel A. Asue, James V. Ikyaator

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study examines external debt pass-through to inflation in Nigeria using annual data from 1981 to 2020 based on structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) model. The results reveal that an increase in external debt service leads to a significant depreciation of the exchange rate, which leads to a contemporaneous increase in inflation, while the direct response of inflation to external debt is statistically not significant. The impulse response confirms these results. The forecast error variance decomposition depicts that future values of official exchange rate depend on external debt, inflation and external debt service. The study recommends that the Nigerian government should …

Development Of S.T.E.A.M. Daises In Formal And Informal Environments For Educating Primary I Learners, Frances Neville

Masters Theses

The federal government has made education a competition among ourselves. Learning is not a rivalry to be imposed on our physical and cognitive development as humans. Escalating beliefs recognize education is more encompassing than CCSS, assessments and the grade level time frames in which standards are to be taught. On the precipice of anti-intellect, low expectations, and what has been termed “The Dumbing of America” an investigation into what it would take to close the achievement gap and increase student learning is overdue.

The goal for my Michigan based project, S.T.E.A.M. Daises, was to develop a program focusing on the …
