Pedagogies Of Rhetorical Empathy-In-Action: Role Playing And Story Sharing In Healthcare Provider Education, Lillian Campbell, Elisabeth L. Miller
Pedagogies Of Rhetorical Empathy-In-Action: Role Playing And Story Sharing In Healthcare Provider Education, Lillian Campbell, Elisabeth L. Miller
English Faculty Research and Publications
Since successful healthcare relies heavily on a practitioner’s ability to empathize with the patient, the allied health professions—like nursing and speech therapy—have long considered the possibilities and limitations of a pedagogical practice that centers empathy. In this essay, we analyze two such pedagogies: role playing with simulated patients in nursing and story sharing in a multimodal memoir group with aphasic clients in communicative sciences and disorders (CSD). Comparing theories of empathy in these fields as well as interviews with the future nurses and speech therapists participating in these experiences, we show how students engage in what we call “empathy-in-action” through …

Negotiating Scientific Identity And Agency: Graduate Student Perspectives On A Public Communication Of Science Course, Lillian Campbell
English Faculty Research and Publications
Drawing on interviews with nine graduate science students, this article explores perspectives on a Public Communication of Science (PCS) course designed to help students translate their research for a public talk given at a local town hall. I first outline the history of the student-run course and then discuss three course components—public rhetoric of science; improvisation; and audience awareness. Within each component, I describe one student’s particular experience with the course. I describe how students transferred rhetorical lessons from the course to their academic writing but could also transfer rigid views of communication from their scientific work back into their …
Feeling For Deaf Resonance In The Eighteenth Century And Beyond, Jason S. Farr
Feeling For Deaf Resonance In The Eighteenth Century And Beyond, Jason S. Farr
English Faculty Research and Publications
The article examines how resonance has anchored deaf self-representation in the eighteenth century and the present. Through an interdisciplinary framework that foregrounds Deaf and sound studies in the context of the eighteenth century, the article conducts a close reading of writing from two of the first published deaf authors, Pierre Desloges and Charles Shirreff. The argument is that synchronous vibration figures centrally into their sentimental self-fashioning at a time when organized deaf education was first being implemented in Europe. The article also reveals personal stakes in examining resonance alongside John Bulwer's seventeenth-century multisensory model of perception in Philocophus: or the …
Disability (Book Chapter), Jason S. Farr
Disability (Book Chapter), Jason S. Farr
English Faculty Research and Publications
This chapter illuminates the historical and literary contexts of disability in Defoe’s time. The essay argues that, though disability is a modern category, Defoe’s writing demonstrates trans-historical continuity by representing it as the product of social relations with political consequences. For instance, in A Journal of the Plague Year (1722), contracting disease transforms characters in highly visible ways, challenging Cartesian views of mind/body duality. At the same time, impairment and epidemic disease facilitate an imaginative reworking of kinship. All of this foregrounds Defoe’s political views about how England should confront the plague. Meanwhile, in The Dumb Philosopher: Or, Great Britain’s …

Globally, pests (invertebrates, vertebrates, pathogens, weeds) can cause estimated annual losses of between 20% and 40%, but higher losses are disproportionately experienced by many low-income countries, as agriculture is the mainstay of the majority of the people and of national economies. Pests pose a major barrier to these countries’ ability to meet the aims of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG2, “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.” However, solutions, in the form of pest risk alert systems, coupled with major advances in technology, are now providing opportunities to overcome this barrier in …
Promoting Positive Patient Outcomes Through A Standardized Handoff Communication Process, Elizabeth Morgan Rowland
Promoting Positive Patient Outcomes Through A Standardized Handoff Communication Process, Elizabeth Morgan Rowland
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Abstract
The lack of proper handoff communication between frontline staff has prohibited a true alignment of a partnership of care, which has the potential to affect the safe quality of care. In 2016, The Joint Commission showed that over a five-year span, communication failures led to thirty percent of malpractice claims, 1,744 deaths, and $1.7 billion dollars in malpractice costs (The Joint Commission, 2017). To improve team performance and teamwork between the nurses and the nursing assistants, the implementation of an evidence-based handoff communication SBAR format and process will allow for essential information to be shared that promotes quality, safety, …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
HIV is a preventable disease when steps are taking to decrease transmission. Health care providers are on the forefront of curving the HIV epidemic. Provider confidence related to HIV screening and testing can increase with proper intervention and education. The Check List screening tool is a tool that providers can use in practice to screen those patients who might be at risk for acquiring HIV even if they have already been screened once in their lifetime. The goal of the DNP project was to increase the confidence and practice of the health care providers at the White House Clinics through …

Tsetse flies are exclusively hematophagous and vectors of trypanosomes, which cause human and animal African trypanosomiasis. They are widely distributed in Africa, with 33 extant taxa and 22 species in three sub-genera. Despite a low reproductive rate, tsetse can maintain populations large enough to cause the restriction of the economic use of large areas of tropical Africa through the transmission of trypanosomiases. This success is largely due to their ability to navigate in their environments, using olfactory signals, which elicit critical behavioural phenotypes, such as attraction to hosts for blood meals, larviposition and resting sites, as well as avoidance of …

Structural Analysis And Design Of Semi-Submersible Platform For Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, Qi Ye
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
To solve the issues of energy shortages and environmental pollution, renewable energy is increasingly exploited. As one of the most promising new energy resources, wind energy is actively developed and utilized around the world. To increase the use of offshore wind, there is a need to develop floating platforms to support wind turbines in deep water. However, the cost of floating platform needs to be reduced sharply to be competitive with the traditional energy sources and fixed wind turbines. Moreover, the design code for floating wind turbines (FWTs) is primarily based on offshore ships, oil & gas industry, which still …

Introduction Severe asthma is a complex, multidimensional disease. Optimal treatment, adherence and outcomes require shared decision-making, rooted in mutual understanding between patient and clinician. This study used a novel, patient-centred approach to examine the most bothersome aspects of severe asthma to patients, as seen from both perspectives in asthma registries. Methods Across seven countries, 126 patients with severe asthma completed an open-ended survey regarding most the bothersome aspect(s) of their asthma. Patients’ responses were linked with their treating clinician who also completed a free-text survey about each patient’s most bothersome aspect(s). Responses were coded using content analysis, and patient and …

The presence and effects of nanoplastics (NPs; <1 μm) in the aquatic environment are a growing concern. In this study, a model tooth-carp fish, Aphaniops hormuzensis, has been exposed to different concentrations of fluorescent polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NP) in its diet (up to 5 mg kg−1) over periods of 28 d and the particle accumulation in different tissues determined. Accumulation was observed in both digestive and non-digestive organs, with concentrations greater in the gut, liver and gill (up to 400 μg kg−1 dw) than in the skin and muscle (<180 μg kg−1 dw), but no dependency on exposure time or dose was evident. The presence of the organic contaminant, triclosan (TCS), in the diet and at concentrations up to 0.5 μg kg−1 did not affect PS-NP uptake by A. hormuzensis, while TCS accumulation in the whole body increased with time (up to 10 μg kg−1) and, likewise, appeared to be unaffected by the presence of PS-NPs. These observations suggest that the two contaminants do not interact with each other or that any interactions have no impact on accumulation. The results of this study add to the growing body of evidence that NPs can be translocated by aquatic organisms after ingestion, and reveal that, for the species and conditions employed, nanoplastics are accumulated more readily than a widely used organic chemical.
Agricultural Systems Regulate Plant And Insect (Beetle) Diversity And Induce Ecosystem Novelty, Jessie Woodbridge, Ralph Fyfe
Agricultural Systems Regulate Plant And Insect (Beetle) Diversity And Induce Ecosystem Novelty, Jessie Woodbridge, Ralph Fyfe
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Land-use change plays an important role in shaping plant and insect diversity over long time timescales. Great Britain provides an ideal case study to investigate patterns of long-term vegetation and insect diversity change owing to the existence of spatially and temporally extensive environmental archives (lake sediments, peatlands, and archaeological sites) and a long history of landscape transformation through agrarian change. The trends identified in past environmental datasets allow the impacts of land-use change on plant and insect diversity trends to be investigated alongside exploration of the emergence of ecological novelty. Using fossil pollen, insect (beetle), archaeodemographic, archaeobotanical and modern landscape …

Contact lens (CL) practice is an ever-changing field with clinical knowledge, techniques and equipment continuously evolving. These new developments are backed with clinical trials and research to ensure that practitioners feel confident that there is an evidence base to support these advances. Evidence-based practice is now a crucial part of CL practice, and its importance also filters down to CL education. For example, lectures are one of the most popular tools for an educator but, is standing at the front of a lecture theatre full of students a more effective way of teaching than providing the same material for students …

This narrative review summarises “alternative” or “natural” over-the-counter (OTC) mouthwashes not covered elsewhere in this supplement and newly emerging products, as potential mouthwashes of the future. The “natural” mouthwashes reviewed include saltwater, baking soda, coconut oil, charcoal, propolis, seaweeds, and probiotics. Other than essential oils, it is apparent that their clinical effectiveness is still under debate, but there is some evidence to suggest that propolis reduces plaque and gingivitis. This review also covers the host immune response, via novel anti-inmmunomodulant mouthwashes, such as erythropoietin to reduce inflammation with oral mucositis (OM) after radiotherapy. The emerging concept of nanoparticle-containing mouthwashes, such …

Determining Optimal Traffic Opening Time Through Concrete Strength Monitoring: Wireless Sensing, Zhihao Kong, Na Lu
JTRP Technical Reports
Construction and concrete production are time-sensitive and fast-paced; as such, it is crucial to monitor the in-place strength development of concrete structures in real-time. Existing concrete strength testing methods, such as the traditional hydraulic compression method specified by ASTM C 39 and the maturity method specified by ASTM C 1074, are labor-intensive, time consuming, and difficult to implement in the field. INDOT’s previous research (SPR-4210) on the electromechanical impedance (EMI) technique has established its feasibility for monitoring in-situ concrete strength to determine the optimal traffic opening time. However, limitations of the data acquisition and communication systems have significantly hindered the …

Departments of Transportation (DOTs) need to mobilize workers under harsh weather conditions for winter operations. Traditional snowplow driver training at INDOT is usually conducted annually before the snow season; therefore, it does not replicate the conditions which drivers will be exposed to during winter operations. To this point, some state DOTs have incorporated simulators in their snowplow driver training. Despite this raised interest, few studies have (1) surveyed other state DOTs about the use of this equipment in winter operations driver training, or (2) provided a systematic consideration of all factors involved in the decision to use driving simulators in …
