“Ib For All” From Idea To Implementation: A Literature Review Of Participation, Perception, And Student Support In The Ib Diploma Programme, Gina L. Graham

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme’s (IBDP) expansion over the last two decades demonstrates its potential in US schools; however, it is important to analyze the implications of programme implementation. The following literature review aims to answer the question: What efforts have been made within US schools to ensure the IBDP is more equitably accessible by diverse groups of students and that its support of those students’ academic and social-emotional needs is likewise expanded? Relevant recent studies focused on who participates in the IBDP shed light on enrollment and access gaps related to ethnicity, gender, and school location. An analysis of …

The Impact Of Teacher Attrition On Equitable Education For Students From Underserved Communities, Marian Alicia Williams Jan 2023

The Impact Of Teacher Attrition On Equitable Education For Students From Underserved Communities, Marian Alicia Williams

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT The current teacher shortage has created a looming crisis in education in the United States that most frequently impacts students from underserved communities. Receiving an equitable education in our country should not be assumed because the data tells us a different story. Too often, students from underserved communities are taught by less qualified teachers who lack both experience and expertise. The research paints a picture of primarily children of color living in urban settings who don’t receive the same level of education as their suburban counterparts. Much research has been done to determine the cause of these inequities and …

Tesol Programs In Flux, Priyanvada Abeywickrama, Stefan Frazier, David Malinowski, Scott Phillabaum

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

TESOL graduate programs in the U.S. have seen a steady decline in international and domestic student applications over the past several years. Among the possible causes of this decline are economic turmoil, changing immigration policies and politics, and broader social turbulence, issues that were present before the COVID-19 pandemic but which have been exacerbated by its persistence, forever changing education and learning. As we look forward, TESOL graduate programs must rethink, re-envision, and reconsider how they prepare teachers for a changing world. This chapter discusses ways that two well-established graduate TESOL programs have confronted the changes mentioned above, and presents …

Chastity And Celibacy: A Rhetorical History Of A Rhetoric Of Sex And The Priest In The Catholic Church, Teresa Morales Jan 2023

Chastity And Celibacy: A Rhetorical History Of A Rhetoric Of Sex And The Priest In The Catholic Church, Teresa Morales

Iowa Journal of Communication

The seemingly never-ending instances of reported sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests is commonly thought to be a matter of deviancy and crime. This is true; but there is more to the story. The RC Church has, for two thousand years, known of the sexual behaviors and deviancies of its priests, yet has accomplished little in controlling the situation. The rise of the lawsuit against the Church has led, finally, to the need to examine more deeply the reasons for this ongoing criminal behavior. This paper uses a method of rhetorical history to uncover and understand how and why this …

The Use Of Artificial Intelligence In Crisis Communication: A Study Of Public Perceptions And Trust Of Ai, Travis Loof, Rachel Ehlers, Julia Lobo Paes, Prah Haider, Rachel Spinks

Iowa Journal of Communication

Organizational crises can be detrimental if not offset with an appropriate communication strategy. The Situational Crisis Communication Theory (Coombs, 2007) has been studied as a framework for understanding how organizations can respond to crises. The current study explores the effectiveness of a nontraditional message source, artificial intelligence (AI), when delivering a rebuilding crisis response strategy. The current study empirically tests and discusses future research in AI trust building and crisis communication response strategies.

Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Activities And Communications In Response To The Covid Crisis: Evidence From The U.S., Hyun Ju Jeong, Deborah S. Chung

Iowa Journal of Communication

This study investigates how corporations responded to the COVID-19 crisis through their fulfillment of corporate social responsibility (CSR). We quantitatively analyzed a total of 60 CSR news stories published during the year of 2020. We then provided context through the close readings of all 60 news stories. CSR news coverage was selected as the focal content because it is considered to be a more objective communication of CSR compared to corporations’ self-disclosed CSR reports. Results show that CSR was provided throughout the year as corporations’ timely responses to the unprecedented pandemic. Specifically, corporations emphasized philanthropic CSR activities to support health …

Enabling Customization Of Discussion Forums For Blind Users, Mohan Sunkara, Yash Prakash, Hae-Na Lee, Sampath Jayarathna, Vikas Ashok

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Online discussion forums have become an integral component of news, entertainment, information, and video-streaming websites, where people all over the world actively engage in discussions on a wide range of topics including politics, sports, music, business, health, and world affairs. Yet, little is known about their usability for blind users, who aurally interact with the forum conversations using screen reader assistive technology. In an interview study, blind users stated that they often had an arduous and frustrating interaction experience while consuming conversation threads, mainly due to the highly redundant content and the absence of customization options to selectively view portions …

This paper compares three finite element-based methods used in a physics-based non-rigid registration approach and reports on the progress made over the last 15 years. Large brain shifts caused by brain tumor removal affect registration accuracy by creating point and element outliers. A combination of approximation- and geometry-based point and element outlier rejection improves the rigid registration error by 2.5 mm and meets the real-time constraints (4 min). In addition, the paper raises several questions and presents two open problems for the robust estimation and improvement of registration error in the presence of outliers due to sparse, noisy, and incomplete …

Recent advances in computer vision (CV) and natural language processing have been driven by exploiting big data on practical applications. However, these research fields are still limited by the sheer volume, versatility, and diversity of the available datasets. CV tasks, such as image captioning, which has primarily been carried out on natural images, still struggle to produce accurate and meaningful captions on sketched images often included in scientific and technical documents. The advancement of other tasks such as 3D reconstruction from 2D images requires larger datasets with multiple viewpoints. We introduce DeepPatent2, a large-scale dataset, providing more than 2.7 million …

A Structure-Aware Generative Adversarial Network For Bilingual Lexicon Induction, Bocheng Han, Qian Tao, Lusi Li, Zhihao Xiong Jan 2023

A Structure-Aware Generative Adversarial Network For Bilingual Lexicon Induction, Bocheng Han, Qian Tao, Lusi Li, Zhihao Xiong

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Bilingual lexicon induction (BLI) is the task of inducing word translations with a learned mapping function that aligns monolingual word embedding spaces in two different languages. However, most previous methods treat word embeddings as isolated entities and fail to jointly consider both the intra-space and inter-space topological relations between words. This limitation makes it challenging to align words from embedding spaces with distinct topological structures, especially when the assumption of isomorphism may not hold. To this end, we propose a novel approach called the Structure-Aware Generative Adversarial Network (SA-GAN) model to explicitly capture multiple topological structure information to achieve accurate …

Identifying The Serious Clinical Outcomes Of Adverse Reactions To Drugs By A Multi-Task Deep Learning Framework, Haochen Zhao, Peng Ni, Qichang Zhao, Xiao Liang, Di Ai, Shannon Erhardt, Jun Wang, Yaohang Li, Jiianxin Wang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) have a direct impact on human health. As continuous pharmacovigilance and drug monitoring prove to be costly and time-consuming, computational methods have emerged as promising alternatives. However, most existing computational methods primarily focus on predicting whether or not the drug is associated with an adverse reaction and do not consider the core issue of drug benefit-risk assessment-whether the treatment outcome is serious when adverse drug reactions occur. To this end, we categorize serious clinical outcomes caused by adverse reactions to drugs into seven distinct classes and present a deep learning framework, so-called GCAP, for predicting the …

Closing The Cracks And The Courts: A Comparative Analysis Of Debt Collection Regulation In The United Kingdom And The United States, Tasia S. Harris Jan 2023

Closing The Cracks And The Courts: A Comparative Analysis Of Debt Collection Regulation In The United Kingdom And The United States, Tasia S. Harris

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Consumers who borrow from a lender today cannot count on dealing with that same lender later if they default on their debt. In today's world of debt collection, the lender will outsource collection to a thirdparty debt collector, or those consumers' defaulted debt will be bought and sold numerous times for pennies on the dollar until eventually a debt buyer decides to pursue payment. Either way, under the current US debt collection laws and regulations, both third-party debt collectors and debt buyers can act outside the scope of debt collection regulation in the United States, and many will take that …

Promoting Female Sporting Opportunities Without Title Ix: The Spanish Experience, Stephen Ross, Maria Josefa Garcia Cirac

Faculty Scholarship

This article compares the American approach to improving sporting opportunities for females – Title IX – with approaches taken by Spain. Because of the singular American dedication to elite interscholastic and intercollegiate sports, Title IX’s requirement of equal treatment requires that elite female athletes have equivalent opportunities to elite male athletes. The Spanish approach looks instead on the social benefits of athletics participation for boys, men, girls, and women.

Energy management and efficient asset utilization play an important role in the economic development of a country. The electricity produced at the power station faces two types of losses from the generation point to the end user. These losses are technical losses (TL) and non-technical losses (NTL). TLs occurs due to the use of inefficient equipment. While NTLs occur due to the anomalous consumption of electricity by the customers, which happens in many ways; energy theft being one of them. Energy theft majorly happens to cut down on the electricity bills. These losses in the smart grid (SG) are the …
