Deconstructing Social Constructs: Exploring Teachers’ Positionality When Teaching Race And Human Diversity In The Science Classroom, Uchenna Emenaha
Deconstructing Social Constructs: Exploring Teachers’ Positionality When Teaching Race And Human Diversity In The Science Classroom, Uchenna Emenaha
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
This article reports on how four urban high school biology teachers’ positionality impacts their experiences when teaching culturally responsive lessons on race and human diversity. Teachers in the study taught a two-week genetics intervention lesson on race and human diversity, then participated in individual and focus group interviews. Interview transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results reveal that teachers who were empowered by their racial positionality and had prior professional development in culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) were more likely to believe that science instruction can be used to address unscientific misconceptions amongst high school students. These findings give credence to …
The Animal In The Wild In Hwang Sun-Mi’S The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly, Sarah Yoon
The Animal In The Wild In Hwang Sun-Mi’S The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly, Sarah Yoon
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Hwang Sun-mi’s The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly has become a contemporary classic children’s story in Korea since its original publication in 2000. Since then, the story has been translated and redesigned with new illustrations in almost thirty different countries (Y. Kim). The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly centers on a hen that raises a duckling as her “baby,” with the story drawing upon a rich reservoir of cultural associations between humans and nature in East Asian traditions. In this story, the hen leaves the human-dominated barnyard, based on profit, exploitation, and competition, for a reconnection with moral …

Taking Curriculum Reform To The Next Level: The Need For Decolonising Work In Engineering Education, Gabrielle Orbaek White
Taking Curriculum Reform To The Next Level: The Need For Decolonising Work In Engineering Education, Gabrielle Orbaek White
Research Papers
As humanity is faced with unparalleled challenges, from the climate emergency to rising inequality, there is a renewed emphasis on the role of engineering professionals to contribute solutions to global problems. However, there is increasing recognition that the way that engineers are trained through higher education is inadequate to prepare them to address these grand challenges. This paper aims to deepen theoretical perspectives on why the engineering education status quo is falling short. Taking a British perspective, I outline how the epistemology and cultural ideologies, or the “episteme,” of engineering continues to shape our discourses within modern day engineering education, …

Research Papers
This paper aims to enrich the state of the art on engineering and management learning and education by shedding light on the barriers encountered during the COVID-19 crisis due to the imposed digital transformation. Our research question is: what were the barriers encountered in remote and hybrid learning during pandemic experiences and what lessons can be drawn for higher education in the context of Problem-Based Learning (PBL)? This paper aims to enrich the debate on how digitalization impacted the learning and teaching experience in teaching modules traditionally achieved face-to-face.

Can Oral Examinations Replace Written Examinations?, Zixuan Mu, Fred Marquis
Can Oral Examinations Replace Written Examinations?, Zixuan Mu, Fred Marquis
Research Papers
The purpose of any assessment is to determine students’ learning. While oral examinations have been adopted in many education systems, such as the PhD thesis viva and medical assessments (Huxham, Campbell, and Westwood 2012), they are rarely used in undergraduate engineering courses (Baghdadchi et al. 2022) which traditionally rely on written papers. This is not surprising given, generally, the large cohort sizes and the need to efficiently conduct such examinations in a timely manner. It has been shown that widening the range of assessments that a student experiences can lead to a more comprehensive development of the student (Rust 2005) …

Professional Identity Of Female Engineering Graduates: An Exploration Of Identity Status Through Life History Research, Natascha Van Hattum-Janssen, Maaike D. Endedijk
Research Papers
The number of students entering engineering programmes is too low to meet the need for engineering graduates. Still, many leave for jobs outside the technical sector right after graduation. Professional identity is a concept that helps to explain why they stay in or leave the technical sector (Cech 2014). It is the result of the process of professional socialisation. This study uses life history research to understand the professional socialisation of engineering graduates from kindergarten age until a few years after graduation. An analysis of the life experiences of male and female engineering graduates shows differences in how they describe …

Intrinsic Value For The Environmental Pragmatist, L. Pippa Callanan
Intrinsic Value For The Environmental Pragmatist, L. Pippa Callanan
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Motivated by the disconnect between the seeming impossibility of resolving deep metaphysical disputes, and the pressing need for environmental action, many environmental philosophers have embraced environmental pragmatism. Environmental pragmatists focus on the practical effects of philosophical arguments. With this as their agenda, environmental pragmatists have consistently endorsed anthropocentrism as the value system for discussing environmental issues, in order to achieve efficacious results. This is based on the notion that appeals to human goods are the best means for motivating humans to action. This essay will show some conceptual and empirical problems with this pretense, to argue that true environmental pragmatists …
Arousing “Arts Of Making” In Design: Cultivating Growing Material Societal Meanings For Sustainable Transitions, Ye Yang, Valentina Rognoli
Arousing “Arts Of Making” In Design: Cultivating Growing Material Societal Meanings For Sustainable Transitions, Ye Yang, Valentina Rognoli
IASDR Conference Series
Under the industrial mass production of the 20th century, “making” is controllable and directed by “thinking” in artifact design activities, which formalizes the dominant pattern of “reactive making”, meaning “making following thinking”. The initiative of “making” has been continually weakened and overlooked. Meanwhile, properties of the physical material are defined by the disciplines of Science and Engineering, acting as the “tags” or “surface textures” in CAD for designers to select after the conceptualizing process in design practices. We found tons of nameless and meaningless materials have been surged forth in an uncontrolled way, which has grown a cultural and societal …

Design Activating Agency: A Study On Rural Community Co-Creation In China Under Non-Anthropocentrism, Xin Zhao, Duoduo Zhang
IASDR Conference Series
Community co-creation, centered on human values, fosters favorable conditions for stakeholder participation in design collaboration. Sustainable development of local communities, including their culture, relies on the interaction between humans, artificial systems, and nature. Firstly, this article describes the trend of community co-creation in guidance frameworks, activity tools, and collaboration processes, pointing agency as the platform trigger for community co-creation development. Secondly, based on the bioinclusive involvement framework and practices in various countries, this article summarizes 3 co-creation models and their characteristics in rural communities, and the third model shows chances in local culture and multi-species stakeholders. Thirdly, this article analyzes …

Mapping Urban Regeneration Through Multiple Dimensions Of Temporality: A Visual Analysis Of Three Approaches To Theory Of Change, Hadas Zohar, Luca Simeone, Amalia De Götzen, Nicola Morelli
IASDR Conference Series
This paper analyses some visual aspects of three Theory of Change maps, i.e. logic planning models used to explore and abstractly represent a potential change in a way that reflects a complex and systemic understanding of development. Theory of Change emerged in the field of philanthropic initiatives and is based on two streams of work: evaluation and informed social practice. The Theory of Change maps analysed in this paper are created to support complex urban regeneration projects within the context of T-Factor, a four-year innovation action funded by the European Commission and taking place in six cities under regeneration across …

Tribal communities use locally available resources to fulfil their daily needs in India. Santhal and Mohli tribes in Jharkhand, India have an intergenerational skill of using bamboo and other natural fibres to make utility crafts like baskets and mats, which is used as a part of their lifestyle. However, it was limited in terms of product range and market reach, which resulted in the tribes’ livelihood stagnancy and other financial difficulties. Therefore, the objective of this research was design intervention and product development based on collaborative designing, as the researchers were outside of the tribal community. And also to propose …

Creating National Strategy For Circular Design Through Co-Design: An Australian Perspective, Simon Lockrey, Allister Hill, Liam Fennessy, Helen Millicer, Richard Collins, Juliette Anich, Karli Verghese
IASDR Conference Series
For years design has been touted as defining a significant portion of the environmental impacts of everyday products and systems. ‘Sustainability’ has been a lens often chosen to tackle related environmental issues that humanity faces; the Brundtland Report describes sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Design focused on reducing the environmental impacts of materials embedded within products necessitates an engagement in whole systems and aligns with the rise of global product stewardship arrangements, waste export bans, the right-to-repair movement, and the circular economy. …

Building Design Agency Through Bodystorming, Stefana Broadbent, Valentina Auricchio, Marta Corubolo, Vanessa Monna
IASDR Conference Series
When addressing urgent issues such as climate change and the social impacts this will have on our future living environments, as designers and design educators, we must critically ask ourselves if the mindsets, approaches, processes, methods, and tools we know are appropriate or need inquiry to evolve. This paper presents an experimental technique the authors have been applying in the past four years of teaching in an international design studio that aims to imagine products and services for future uncertain times. In planning the course the main challenge was to understand which would be the best method for designers to …

How Might We Design Alternative Worldviews? Assessing A Design Education Program For Business Professionals, Tomohide Mizuuchi, Daijiro Mizuno, Yasuhiro Yamasaki, Mizuki Tajima, Masafumi Kawachi
IASDR Conference Series
In recent years, there has been a need for design that contributes to "futuring" as Tony Fry points out. The emergence of educational programs that promote futuring, such as transition design seminars at Carnegie Mellon University, is beginning to be observed globally. Yet their business applications have not been fully designed in many cases, and effective design education on defuturing/futuring is urgently needed. Keeping the status quo while challenging the global environmental crisis has contradictions and limitations. To drive business, it is imperative to transition the underlying worldview itself. For such a transition to succeed, business professionals with the necessary …
Social Innovation Through Regenerative Perspectives: A Theoretical Approach On Gender-Based Violence System, Raquel Lima
Social Innovation Through Regenerative Perspectives: A Theoretical Approach On Gender-Based Violence System, Raquel Lima
IASDR Conference Series
Regenerative theories are used in human and non-human dynamics in a sustainable perspective; however, their potential can flourish new applications to deal with other social challenges. This article explores a theoretical approach to possible uses of regenerative theories applied to the gender-based violence (GBV) system and its relevance in social innovation. The answers in GVB are conducted by the government and civil society institutions that collectively act on the field. Despite the efforts to end violence against women, there is a long road to deconstructing inequalities, and social and cultural structures that evidence and contribute to maintaining the phenomenon. Since …
Is Gift A Token Of Gratitude Or An Imposition Of Identity? Facilitating Positive Consequences Of Gift-Giving With Receiver-Centred Design, Houjiang Liu, Miso Kim
Is Gift A Token Of Gratitude Or An Imposition Of Identity? Facilitating Positive Consequences Of Gift-Giving With Receiver-Centred Design, Houjiang Liu, Miso Kim
IASDR Conference Series
Gifts are more than things; they represent and tie together human relationships. While people often treat it as a token of social interactions, the presentation of a gift could impose an identity that reflects gift-givers’ images of gift-receivers. Because gift-giving is a social behaviour situated in the cultural and economic context, the perceived value of gifts is greatly affected by the social norms and the consumer market, in which design plays an important role. In this paper, we first discuss how commodities can be transformed into gifts and what kinds of design activities influence such transformations. We found that most …
More Than Human Empathy: A Caring Approach To Ecosystemic Design, Mariana Pestana
More Than Human Empathy: A Caring Approach To Ecosystemic Design, Mariana Pestana
IASDR Conference Series
This paper argues for a caring approach to design based on more-than-human empathy. It proposes that such an empathic turn can provide a useful framework for eco-systemic thinking and practice in design, because it takes into consideration the wellbeing and the rights of people but also that of non-human bodies. To do that, this paper reports on a study concerning the conception and delivery of a design Biennial, entirely created and experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which gathered thinkers, practitioners, researchers and community groups to collectively discuss, scrutinise and rehearse the role of design in a post-anthropocentric, more-than-human paradigm. For …

The Ripple Framework: A Co-Design Platform (A Thousand Tiny Methodologies), Luis Soares, Sarah Kettley, Chris Speed
IASDR Conference Series
The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted long-standing issues in the healthcare sector in the UK, including difficulties in retaining and recruiting staff. These are complex and interconnected problems, making them difficult to solve. We identify this as a methodological challenge that needs to be addressed. We illustrate a possible way of achieving this through the Healthier Working Lives (HWL) research initiative funded by the Healthy Ageing Challenge, Social, Behavioural and Design Research Programme (SBDRP). The SBDRP is an interdisciplinary, intersectorial programme aiming to find ways of improving working conditions for care workers. The HWL study took place in 6 care homes in …

Changing Heritage, Rodolfo Maffeis, Trocchianesi Raffaella, Franzato Carlo, Mason Marco
IASDR Conference Series
The paper deals with changing processes of the cultural heritage through different perspectives: how the power of the change can be recognized both in the historic art masters approach and in their representations? How these historic art masters have triggered iconographic and conceptual agents of innovation? How Design for Cultural Heritage can envision new sustainable scenarios taking into account sociopolitical, cultural and climatic changes? In this complex context and age, what are new models of cultural experiences? What is the role of digital in museums transformation? Herein we will explore new definitions of contemporary museology and museography, like the digitally …
Co-Creating Narratives Of Usefulness, Elisa Cardamone
Co-Creating Narratives Of Usefulness, Elisa Cardamone
IASDR Conference Series
Health and social care are moving increasingly towards digital platforms and greater knowledge of people’s lifestyles and habits through numbers (Sharon 2016, 2017; Sharon & Zandbergen 2017; Rooksby et al. 2014; Swan 2013). However, among ageing populations, digital devices often enter households just to be forgotten in cupboards due to their lack of “usefulness” (Kim et al. 2022; Spann and Stewart 2018). Research shows that people aged 65 and older tend to use fewer technologies and to do so less frequently than younger individuals (Smith 2014). How can we empathise with the lived experience of ageing populations, designing devices that …

Exploring And Facilitating Daoism's Contributions To Design Prototype, A Case Study From A "More-Than-Human" Social Innovation Project: Hokkhi, Jixiang Jiang, Shu Zhang, Yizao Wu
IASDR Conference Series
In the face of the current environmental crises and the emergent debate over how we as a species should respond to it, local-context discussions, research, and practice are rapidly growing in a number of regions. Within the confines of the design community, there is an ever-growing view of these discussions as representing a culturally diverse perspective on design, as opposed to the current Western-centric design shaped by modernism and capitalist market economies, and as representing the emergence of an emerging design scene of pluriverse. This study extends the concept of the oyster reef conservation project referred to as "Hokkhi," produced …

Global Important Agriculture Heritage Systems (GIAHS) is a form of heritage published by FAO that integrates cultural, ecological, economic, and agricultural factors. Formerly, the digital transformation of GIAHS mainly concerned object models or data storage. A significant part of its intangible heritage, such as cultural stories and traditional skills, was not adequately preserved digitally. The Metaverse is now offering an innovative approach which can build interactive systems and provide powerful possibilities for the digital transformation of the GIAHS. We, therefore, conducted a six-week design workshop in which 10 groups designed the GIAHS Metaverse to summarize this approach's advantages and design …
