Gender As Occupation: The "Doing" Of Authentic Expression And Reciprocally Affirming Care For Transgender Individuals, Annie Derolf, Johnna Belkiewitz, Sally Wasmuth Oct 2023

Gender As Occupation: The "Doing" Of Authentic Expression And Reciprocally Affirming Care For Transgender Individuals, Annie Derolf, Johnna Belkiewitz, Sally Wasmuth

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

The current predominant view of gender as binary, alongside limited training of affirmative care practices, is severely and negatively impacting transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people. This paper urges the re-conceptualization of gender as an occupation, suggesting that gender is a doing that allows for positive identity development, roles, habits, and routines. Doing gender facilitates meaning-making and the ability to engage in other occupations. However, occupational injustices rooted in discrimination, stigma, and/or implicit biases impede TGD people’s ability to engage in the doing of gender and other occupations. Articulation of conceptual guidelines and interventions to support TGD people’s ability to …

Religious Reformation And The Law Of Unnatural Death In England, Trayce Hockstad Oct 2023

Religious Reformation And The Law Of Unnatural Death In England, Trayce Hockstad

Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)

This comment was written as a supplement to a previous article, The Wrong, the Wronged, and the Wrongfully Dead: Deodand Law as a Practice of Absolution, 101 Neb. L. Rev. 731, (2023).

The men and women of Tudor England were, by and large, pragmatists. Grumbling, they sold off as much of their Catholic past as they could not hide or keep, and called in the carpenters to set boards on trestles and fix the forms round the communion tables.

Berman wrote that an essential element of each of the great revolutions that shaped the Western legal tradition was an apocalyptic …

Anthropological And Photospectrometry Analysis Of Natural Dyes In Banana Textiles Of The Philippines, Bitha Beji Oct 2023

Anthropological And Photospectrometry Analysis Of Natural Dyes In Banana Textiles Of The Philippines, Bitha Beji

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

Banana (Musa spp. ) plants have long been valued for their many usages, such as for fruit or for cooking purposes. However, a specific species of the banana plant (Musa textilis) has been utilized in the Philippines, its native region, to produce strong and durable textiles. Abaca, as it is commonly known in the country, is mainly woven on backstrap and floor looms in village-based communities nationwide. It can then be used to make bags, clothes, sandals, and more. This paper summarizes textile weaving and usage within indigenous groups in the southern island of Mindanao of the Philippines, as well …

Review Of Making Livable Worlds: Afro-Puerto Rican Women Building Environmental Justice, Ava L. Corey-Gruenes Oct 2023

Review Of Making Livable Worlds: Afro-Puerto Rican Women Building Environmental Justice, Ava L. Corey-Gruenes

Feminist Pedagogy

Making Livable Worlds: Afro-Puerto Rican Women Building Environmental Justice, by Hilda Lloréns, highlights Black Puerto Rican women’s efforts to create equitable futures for their communities in the face of capitalism, racism, colonization, and ecological collapse. This review covers key concepts in Making Livable Worlds, including matriarchal dispossession, decolonizing ethnography, the myth of a homogenous Puerto Rico, and myths of inherent economic self-interest. Analyses of these concepts through an absence lens are suggested to enrich formal and informal feminist learning spaces.

What Outfit Shall The Protagonist Wear? New Models Of Revenue Creation In Online Fiction Platforms, John Rodzvilla Oct 2023

What Outfit Shall The Protagonist Wear? New Models Of Revenue Creation In Online Fiction Platforms, John Rodzvilla

Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators

Online fiction platforms like Wattpad, Tapas, Choices, and Episode have created new models of digital storytelling that serve billions of readers a month who access the content through apps and websites. Through a free-to-read (F2R) model these platforms offer access to thousands of online prose narratives. Instead of requiring money upfront for access, they have found a way to monetize narrative through ad-supported serialization and paywalls. Some companies have also begun to offer reader customization through microtransactions similar to those in the mobile game world. This paper examines how these platforms are using the F2R model to create a compelling …

Augmented Reality Experience And Perception Theory: A Quantitative Study Using Eye Tracking To Investigate How Mobile Phone Users Perceive Multiple Layered Depths, Donna C. Templeton Oct 2023

Augmented Reality Experience And Perception Theory: A Quantitative Study Using Eye Tracking To Investigate How Mobile Phone Users Perceive Multiple Layered Depths, Donna C. Templeton

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This research explores how mobile augmented reality experiences are perceived and interacted with by using a quantitative eye-tracking study to record user eye movement behavior. Visual communication is vital in today’s increasingly visual society and current technology gives evidence of much promise in adding additional engagement, information, and interactivity through augmented reality. Though smartphone technology allows all smartphone users to access and experience browser-based augmented reality, there is little research on design aspects from a user experience perspective, such as the influence of layered depths in an augmented scene. The purpose of this study was to explore the variable of …

Paul And Economics: A Theology Of The Gospel And Economics, Brent Allen Myers Oct 2023

Paul And Economics: A Theology Of The Gospel And Economics, Brent Allen Myers

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

An often overlooked biblical theology that the Apostle Paul addresses is economics. Economics impacts every area of an individual's life and even more so in the ancient world. Paul's chief concern is with the gospel of Jesus and one of the chief components of a believer's new life in Christ is how they handle their own economic situation. This work seeks to analyze the writings of Paul and explore his comments on the economic realities of individuals based on God's authority.

The Inability Of Negative Higher Criticism To Undermine The Biblical Portrait Of Jesus Christ, Brett Arthur Seybold Oct 2023

The Inability Of Negative Higher Criticism To Undermine The Biblical Portrait Of Jesus Christ, Brett Arthur Seybold

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Paul Tillich described, the attempt of historical criticism to find the empirical truth about Jesus of Nazareth as a failure. John Dominic Crossan described this lack of consensus among critical scholars regarding the person of Jesus as “a bad joke.” This lack of consensus by skeptics, as well as their shared reluctancy to abandon the task of attempting to make sense of who Jesus Christ truly was historically serves as the backbone of this dissertation where I argue that Jesus transcends negative higher criticism in particular and the post-Christian mindset in general. I argue that He constitutes a suis generis …

A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Lack Of Baptist Church Participation In Seminole County, Florida, Ismael Melendez Oct 2023

A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Lack Of Baptist Church Participation In Seminole County, Florida, Ismael Melendez

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This phenomenological study explores the reasons for a lack of participation in in-person Baptist churches and the rise of participation in online Baptist churches in Seminole County, Florida. The theory guiding this study was Martin Heidegger’s hermeneutical framework which focuses on the commonality of experiences. Heidegger believed that to arrive at the essence of a phenomenon a researcher must go through the revisionary process of what Heidegger termed the Hermeneutic Circle. The principal research question in this study explored existing relationship(s) between in-person and online Baptist church leaders and how such relationship(s) contributed to a lack of church participation. The …

Archaeology And Hauntology: An Ongoing, Stalled Conversation, Colby Dickinson Oct 2023

Archaeology And Hauntology: An Ongoing, Stalled Conversation, Colby Dickinson

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

It is certainly possible that we might learn to better acknowledge the spirits of our ancestors who came before us, as well as to recognize them in such ways that we also learn to embrace the ‘woven density’ of our own lives, our histories and our communities. By doing so, we might begin to discover that the spirits we had thought were removed from our modern, secularized world never fully left us, just as the irrationality of our humanity cannot be fully tamed via a reductive, rational and scientific outlook on life. There are, as Bruno Latour had frequently argued, …

Effects Of An Isotonic Medinilla Speciosa During And After Exercise, Nur Azis Rohmansyah, Fafa Nurdyansyah, Ashira Hiruntrakul, Mancharee Phumphitarkpanya

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 16(2): 1269-1283, 2023. Maintaining an adequate fluid balance is crucial during extended physical activity. It is currently unknown how drinking an isotonic medinilla speciosa beverage affects the autonomic regulation of heart function during and after exercise. The purpose of this study is to examine how drinking isotonic beverages affects heart rate variability (HRV) during and after intense exercise. A maximal exercise test to assess protocol loading, a control group, and an experimental group were all carried out by twenty-one young man (19.3 ± 1.2 years) over the course of three distinct protocols, with a 48-hour …

On Time, Chengquan Xiang Oct 2023

On Time, Chengquan Xiang

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Contemporary philosophy discussions on the nature of time begin with McTaggart, who introduces two ways of describing temporal relation between events: the A-series, focusing on the past, present and future, is about positions of time; and the B-series, which an event’s position in the series is described only in relation to other events: “earlier than,” “later than,” or “simultaneous with.” Along with McTaggart’s objection to the reality of time, I provide a detailed exposition of why change can be expressed within the A-series and why the A-series contains a contradiction. In addition, I demonstrate step by step that time does …

Semiotic Exograms: Extending The Mind Fully, Robert Reimanis Oct 2023

Semiotic Exograms: Extending The Mind Fully, Robert Reimanis

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

This essay is an analysis and expanded defense of John Sutton’s essay “Exograms and Interdisciplinarity: History, the Extended Mind, and the Civilizing Process.” The first section of the essay surveys the extended mind literature, following the first and second waves of the Extended Mind theory. The second section explains Sutton’s exograms as external representations of internal thought. This section also details his argument that exograms extend the mind because, historically, exograms play a role in the internal functioning of a mind. The third section defends Sutton’s argument from objections against their place in mental processes, namely memory. The fourth section …

A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of The Relationship Between Crime And Community Gardens: A Case Study Of Seattle’S P-Patches From 1996 To 2006, Taylor L. Frazier, Jin-Kyu Jung Oct 2023

A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of The Relationship Between Crime And Community Gardens: A Case Study Of Seattle’S P-Patches From 1996 To 2006, Taylor L. Frazier, Jin-Kyu Jung

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Urban community gardens have been shown to have positive affects social capital, yet like many public spaces, are open to negative activities like crime. Contrary to this idea, most of the literature has indicated that urban green spaces are associated with a reduction in crime. This study utilized a mixed-methods research design to explore the hypothesis that areas around Seattle’s “P-Patch” community gardens are associated with a reduction in crime. We employed spatio-temporal GIS (Geographic Information Systems) analyses, statistical analyses, and qualitative interviews with gardeners. Yearly violent and property crime rates for 132 census tracts in Seattle, locations of 84 …

Sellars’ Paradox And Language Games, Jiayi Lu Oct 2023

Sellars’ Paradox And Language Games, Jiayi Lu

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

In “Some Reflections on Language Games,” Wilfrid Sellars contemplates whether there is a genuine paradox in learning a first language. It seems that we must know a metalanguage in order to learn a first language, and a meta-metalanguage in order to learn a metalanguage, and so on, because we cannot learn the linguistic expression of a thing without grasping its matching concept. The idea of language as a language game paves the way to a solution to this paradox by presenting an account of pre-conceptual base-level language acquisition.

Assessing The Mental Health Of Older Hispanic/Latinx Adults: Focus On The Impact Of The Hispanic Cultural Value Of Fatalismo On Depressive Symptomatology, Anna J. Prado, Amie Bostic, Mario Gil

Research Colloquium

Introduction: The impact of depression in older Hispanic/Latinx adults in the United States is poorly understood. The influence of the deeply embedded Hispanic/Latinx cultural value of fatalismo, referring to the belief that one’s future is predetermined and related to feelings of helplessness, has been found to negatively impact their psychological health [1, 2]. The present study explores the association between the Hispanic/Latinx cultural value of fatalismo and mental health.

Objective: To contribute to the identification and understanding of psycho-social-cultural determinants of depression in the Hispanic/Latinx population.

Methods: Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) …

Late Pleistocene Herpetofauna From Two High-Elevation Caves In The Upper Gunnison Basin, Colorado, Jim I. Mead, Steven D. Emslie, David J. Meltzer

Western North American Naturalist

Cement Creek and Haystack caves in Colorado have produced a diverse record of high-elevation late Quaternary mammals. Intermixed with the abundant mammalian remains were rare occurrences of amphibian and reptile fossils reported here. Cement Creek Cave (2860 m elevation) contained the fossils of only a few anurans and a limited number of snakes, whereas Haystack Cave, at a substantially lower elevation (2450 m), contained the fossils of a salamander, a larger number of snakes, and an extensive number of lizard remains, yet no anurans. The 2 faunas are overall distinct in composition, and, although not diverse or abundant in terms …

Decolonizing The Clock: Non-Western Time Constructs In Central American Art And Literature, Eden Van Saun, Julia Medina

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Given how entrenched Western systems of time have become in our quotidian lives, it has become increasingly important to broaden our perspective of what time is and can be. This year-long project will explore the intersection of time -- from both a textual and a technical perspective -- in Central American literature and art, focusing specifically on non-Western ontological perspectives and Indigenous and Black voices. My project will demonstrate how Central American voices have worked to question and decolonize the dominant Western narrative of time, and -- by bridging forms of often competing epistemes -- my project would consider these …
