The Hidden History Of The Norseman And Celts, Amber Nicole Johnson Dec 2023

The Hidden History Of The Norseman And Celts, Amber Nicole Johnson

Whittier Scholars Program

When people hear the word Celts or Vikings there seems to be a common stigma or romanticization of them. This seems to stem from the early iron age and has shifted over to the 21st century with the production of movies and franchises. They are often depicted as being savage, barbaric, or warrior based (a term used to describe them) when there is a whole other side to these people. In the Spring of 2023, I took an independent study course that allowed me to examine the available archaeological and other evidence to understand the identities of the Germanic and …

Comparative Functional And Genomic Analysis Of Protein Targets Of Sexual Selection In Primates, Brianna Ports Dec 2023

Comparative Functional And Genomic Analysis Of Protein Targets Of Sexual Selection In Primates, Brianna Ports

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sexual selection is driven by the differential reproductive success of individuals, which is influenced by competition for mates and mate choice. In primates, this selective pressure has been attributed to the development of distinct anatomical, physiological, and behavioral characteristics. By employing comparative functional and genomic methodologies, this study aimed to assess the repercussions of primate sexual selection. To better understand the mechanisms driving sexually selected traits, an unbiased genome-wide analysis was used to associate rates of protein evolution with relative testes size and sexual size dimorphism. While previous research focused on the rapid evolution of male reproductive proteins in response …

Role Of The Anti-Viral Immune Response In Neural Cell Modulation And Neurological Sequelae Of Childhood Viral Infections, Yashika Kamte Dec 2023

Role Of The Anti-Viral Immune Response In Neural Cell Modulation And Neurological Sequelae Of Childhood Viral Infections, Yashika Kamte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Viral infections of the central nervous system (CNS) often result in neurological sequelae and are considered a risk factor for the development of neurological disease. Moreover, the outcomes of a viral infection are largely dependent on the age of the host, with younger hosts developing more profound neuropathology. Perhaps the developing brain coupled with an immature immune system contributes to worse outcomes in the very young. Children suffering from brain infections are more prone to develop enduring neurological impairments even after recovery from the infection. Although majority of the brain growth occurs in utero, neurodevelopment continues throughout the juvenile …

Characterization Of Trafficking And Metabolic Functions Of The Endocytic Regulator Ehd1 In Ewing Sarcoma, Sukanya Chakraborty

Theses & Dissertations

Ewing sarcoma (EWS) is the second most common bone malignancy in children and adolescents. Despite improvement in survival due to advances in multimodality treatment strategies, patients with metastatic or recurrent disease have very poor outcomes. Overexpression of the EPS15 Homology Domain containing 1 (EHD1) protein has been linked to tumorigenesis but whether its core function as a regulator of intracellular traffic of cell surface receptors plays a role in oncogenesis remains unknown.

Studies presented in this dissertation establish that EHD1 overexpression is a feature of nearly 90% EWS patient tumors with high EHD1 expression specifying shorter patient survival. ShRNA-knockdown and …

Investigating And Targeting Iron Metabolism In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa And Klebsiella Pneumoniae, Zachary Scott

Theses & Dissertations

Antimicrobial resistance is an incredibly pressing issue in modern medicine. Because of that many researchers are pursuing just as many avenues for treatment of these pathogens. However, due to the nature of bacteria many of these methods are stop gaps and the bacteria can develop typically within years of their deployment. Therefore, more robust methods of treating infections of antimicrobial resistant bacteria that are difficult or impossible to develop resistance to are required. To produce this effect the treatment would need to target and alter or inhibit functions or structures essential to the bacteria that could not be altered, additionally …
