Dyslexia is a learning disorder, characterized by impairment in the ability to read, spell, and decode letters. It is vital to detect dyslexia in earlier stages to reduce its effects. However, diagnosing dyslexia is a time-consuming and costly process. In this paper, we propose a machine-learning model that predicts whether a Turkish-speaking child has dyslexia using his/her audio records. Therefore, our model can be easily used by smart phones and work as a warning system such that children who are likely to be dyslexic according to our model can seek an examination by experts. In order to train and evaluate, …

Effect Of Sex And Cross-Sex Hormone Treatment On Renal Monocarboxylate-Transporter Expression In Rats, Hao Wei, Annie Lee, Qing Zhang, Melanie A. Felmlee
Pacific Faculty Work
Proton- and sodium-dependent monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs/SMCTs) are determinants of renal clearance through the renal reabsorption of monocarboxylate substrates. Prior studies with intact females and males, ovariectomized females and castrated males have revealed the hormonal regulation of renal monocarboxylate-transporter expression, prompting investigation into the regulatory role of individual hormones. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of exogenous sex and cross-sex hormones on renal MCT1, MCT4, CD147 and SMCT1 mRNA and membrane-bound protein expression. Ovariectomized (OVX) females and castrated (CST) male Sprague Dawley rats received estrogen and/or progesterone, testosterone, or a corresponding placebo treatment for 21 days …

Stepwise Dynamic Nearest Neighbor (Sdnn): A New Algorithm For Classification, Deni̇z Karabaş, Derya Bi̇rant, Peli̇n Yildirim Taşer
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Although the standard k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm has been used widely for classification in many different fields, it suffers from various limitations that abate its classification ability, such as being influenced by the distribution of instances, ignoring distances between the test instance and its neighbors during classification, and building a single/weak learner. This paper proposes a novel algorithm, called stepwise dynamic nearest neighbor (SDNN), which can effectively handle these problems. Instead of using a fixed parameter k like KNN, it uses a dynamic neighborhood strategy according to the data distribution and implements a new voting mechanism, called stepwise voting. Experimental …
An Improved Binary Quadratic Interpolation Optimization For 0-1 Knapsack Problems, Sara Salem
An Improved Binary Quadratic Interpolation Optimization For 0-1 Knapsack Problems, Sara Salem
Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal
This paper presents a new binary optimization technique for solving the 0–1 knapsack problem. This algorithm is based on converting the continuous search space of the recently proposed quadratic interpolation optimization (QIO) into discrete search space using various V-shaped and S-shaped transfer functions; this algorithm is abbreviated as BQIO. To further improve its performance, it is effectively integrated with a uniform crossover operator and a swap operator to explore the discrete binary search space more effectively. This improved variant is called BIQIO. Both BQIO and BIQIO are assessed using 20 well-known knapsack instances and compared to four recently published metaheuristic …

An Improved Light Spectrum Optimizer For Parameter Identification Of Triple-Diode Pv Model, Safaa Saber, Sara Salem
Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal
Over the last few decades, researchers have paid attention to finding an effective and efficient metaheuristic algorithm that can determine the ideal parameters for PV models. In this study, to determine the TDM’s nine unknown parameters, we will examine the efficacy of a recently proposed metaheuristic algorithm called light spectrum optimizer (LSO). To further enhance the effectiveness of LSO in estimating those unknown parameters, a new improved variant called ILSO is developed. This variant employs LSO in conjunction with two newly developed update systems to improve its exploration and exploitation operators. We compare the best fitness value, worst fitness value, …

Mitochondrial morphology, which is controlled by mitochondrial fission and fusion, is an important regulator of the thermogenic capacity of brown adipocytes. Adipose-specific peroxisome deficiency impairs thermogenesis by inhibiting cold-induced mitochondrial fission due to decreased mitochondrial membrane content of the peroxisome-derived lipids called plasmalogens. Here, we identify TMEM135 as a critical mediator of the peroxisomal regulation of mitochondrial fission and thermogenesis. Adipose-specific TMEM135 knockout in mice blocks mitochondrial fission, impairs thermogenesis, and increases diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance. Conversely, TMEM135 overexpression promotes mitochondrial division, counteracts obesity and insulin resistance, and rescues thermogenesis in peroxisome-deficient mice. Mechanistically, thermogenic stimuli promote association between …

Constitutively activated tyrosine kinase JAK3 is implicated in the pathogenesis of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL). The mechanisms of constitutive JAK3 activation are unknown although a JAK3 mutation was reported in a small portion of CTCL patients. In this study, we assessed the oncogenic roles of a newly identified JAK3-INSL3 fusion transcript in CTCL. Total RNA from malignant T-cells in 33 patients with Sézary syndrome (SS), a leukemic form of CTCL, was examined for the new JAK3-INSL3 fusion transcript by RT-PCR followed by Sanger sequencing. The expression levels were assessed by qPCR and correlated with patient survivals. Knockdown and/or knockout assays …

In a Kimberley place-based cultural story, Dangaba is a woman whose Country holds poison gas. Her story shows the importance of cultural ways of understanding and caring for Country, especially hazardous places. The authors contrast this with a corporate story of fossil fuel, illustrating the divergent discourses and approaches to place. Indigenous and local peoples and their knowledge, cultures, laws, philosophies and practices are vitally important to Indigenous lifeways and livelihoods, and critically significant to the long-term health and well-being of people and place in our locality, region and world. We call for storying and narratives from the pluriverse of …
The No-Self Thesis: Counterarguments From Abnormal Psychology, Elma Berisha
The No-Self Thesis: Counterarguments From Abnormal Psychology, Elma Berisha
UBT International Conference
The no-self thesis is said to originate in David Hume’s (1739) “bundle theory of self,” questioning the human self as a mere bundle of fleeting perceptions without ontological reality. In contemporary discourse, the self is sandwiched between top-down and bottom-up reductionisms: those with biological and cognitive arguments that reduce the self to a lower, ontological level, on the one hand, and those who hold cultural-linguistic constructionist positions, on the other hand, reducing the self to a higher level. In both cases, self reductionism is a prelude to complete self elimination. On these conceptions, what we call “self” may be nothing …
A Neurodevelopmental Perspective To Improve Innovation In Preventive Treatment Of Substance Use Disorders, Ismael Perez, John Vandeberg, Mario Gil
A Neurodevelopmental Perspective To Improve Innovation In Preventive Treatment Of Substance Use Disorders, Ismael Perez, John Vandeberg, Mario Gil
Research Symposium
Background: Midbrain dopaminergic neurons have been associated with substance use disorders (Blaess & Ang, 2015). Understanding their neurodevelopment during early stages of life is fundamental for innovating preventive care treatments. The animal model Monodelphis domestica has been proposed as an excellent candidate to study neurodevelopmental changes due to the ease of access to see changes in their embryonic development (Mate et al., 1994). The purpose of our study is to inform how brain cells, including and especially dopaminergic neurons, mature by quantifying their number during early development. Additionally, the study aims to compare different midbrain areas and track neurodevelopmental changes …

Research Symposium
Introduction: Cancer cachexia is a metabolic syndrome defined by an ongoing loss of adipose and muscular tissue and is characterized by a reduced food intake. Local b-3 adrenergic receptor activation in adipose tissue induces lipolysis, whereas b-3 signaling in tumors has been shown to be tumorigenic in some cancer models. Therefore, b-3 signaling may be a therapeutic target in cancer cachexia. The aim of this study was to assess the role of b-3 adrenergic signaling in feeding behavior, body composition, and tumor progression in the L5178Y-R murine lymphoma model.
Methods: In our study we used BALB/c mice of both sexes, …

For decades, cancer has been a major public health concern worldwide owing to its high mortality rate. Many therapeutic strategies have come up in the scientific world, but it's pitiful to know that synthetic chemotherapeutic agents either cause adverse effects or cancer cells develop resistance to these agents. Plant-derived chemotherapeutic agents present a wide range of therapeutics and most are yet to be discovered. In the current review, we have discussed the tumoricidal properties of Mucuna pruriens (seed), Withania coagulans (berry), Anacyclus pyrethrum (rhizome), Arachis hypogea (leaf), Rhizaoma polygoni (root) and Terminalia chebula (fruit). We have also tried to summarize …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
This work was aimed at the development of a sensitive electrochemical detection method for oxycodone in water. Molecularly imprinted electrodes were formed by electro-polymerization process using o-phenylenediamine as a monomer. The electro-polymerization was performed on glassy carbon electrodes in the presence of oxycodone before the extraction of entrapped oxycodone molecules. Various electrochemical techniques were employed to monitor the polymerization and response of the fabricated electrodes toward oxycodone. These techniques included cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The oxycodone concentration was determined using SWV by measuring the change in the oxidation …

Aspen Bibliography
Intraspecific genetic variations in foundation species such as aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) shapes their impact on forest structure and function. Identifying genes underlying ecologically important traits is key to understanding that impact. Previous studies, using single-locus genome-wide association (GWA) analyses to identify candidate genes, have identified fewer genes than anticipated for highly heritable quantitative traits. Mounting evidence suggests that polygenic control of quantitative traits is largely responsible for this "missing heritability" phenomenon. Our research characterized the genetic architecture of 30 ecologically important traits using a common garden of aspect through genomic and transcriptomic analyses. A multilocus association model revealed …
