Despite the advent of highly active anti-retroviral therapy, people are still dying from HIV-related causes, many of whom are children, and a protective vaccine or cure is needed to end the HIV pandemic. Understanding the nature and activation states of immune cell subsets during infection will provide insights into the immunologic milieu associated with viremia suppression that can be harnessed via therapeutic strategies to achieve a functional cure, but these are understudied in pediatric subjects. We evaluated humoral and adaptive host immunity associated with suppression of viremia in rhesus macaques infected soon after birth with a pathogenic SHIV. The results …

Two Multilingual Regions In Southwestern Amazonia, Hein Van Der Voort Nov 2023

Two Multilingual Regions In Southwestern Amazonia, Hein Van Der Voort

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Southwestern Amazonia is one of the most linguistically diverse regions of the Americas. It is possible that traditional Indigenous small-scale multilingualism used to exist in two neighboring regions in what is now Rondônia, on the Brazilian side of the Guaporé River. Permanent contact with representatives of Western society from the beginning of the twentieth century onwards led to great demographic, social, cultural, and economic upheaval among the Indigenous societies in the Rio Branco-Colorado and the Apediá-Corumbiara river basins. Early ethnographic reports suggest that these societies were characterized by traditional small-scale multilingualism. In this article, I summarize the evidence for this …

Defragging Feminist Cyberlaw, Amanda Levendowski Nov 2023

Defragging Feminist Cyberlaw, Amanda Levendowski

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In 1996, Judge Frank Easterbrook famously observed that any effort to create a field called cyberlaw would be “doomed to be shallow and miss unifying principles.” He was wrong, but not for the reason other scholars have stated. Feminism is a unifying principle of cyberlaw, which alternately amplifies and abridges the feminist values of consent, safety, and accessibility. Cyberlaw simply hasn’t been understood that way—until now.

In computer science, “defragging” means bringing together disparate pieces of data so they are easier to access. Inspired by that process, this Article offers a new approach to cyberlaw that illustrates how feminist values …

Big Screen Heroes With Paper Voices: A Superhero Adaptation Research Essay, Zachary Green Nov 2023

Big Screen Heroes With Paper Voices: A Superhero Adaptation Research Essay, Zachary Green

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Superheroes may have taken over your phone, tablet, and television screens through the endless adaptations that pelt us from upon high mouse-shaped ears, but their rich history goes back much further than that; they have gripped the public imagination since their creation in comic strips published in newspapers almost one-hundred years ago. But, why exactly has their effect on popular culture, and their subsequent adaptations in various forms of media been so pervasive in the last twenty-five years? What makes these stories and comic book characters, and particularly Marvel comic book characters, so interesting to modern audiences? This essay demonstrates …

Device Closure Of Superior Sinus Venosus Atrial Septal Defects: A Single Centre Experience, Salim N. Al Maskari, Madan M. Maddali, Khalid Al Alawi, Sowmiya Raju, Abdulla Al-Farqani

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Sinus venosus atrial septal defects present a wide variety of anatomical features and are frequently associated with partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of one or more right pulmonary veins. Surgical correction used to be the standard treatment. In recent times, transcatheter correction of superior sinus venosus atrial septal defects has come into vogue. The transcatheter closure of these defects with covered stents at a tertiary care centre in Oman between 2018 and 2023 is reported.

Is Forced Coughing Effective In Reducing Pain During Cervical Biopsy?: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Yassamine Ouerdane, Aya Abd Elmegeed, Mohammed Tarek, Imane Bakhtaoui, Ahmed K. Awad, Nihal Al Riyami, Ahmed Saad

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

This review aimed to compare the potential analgesic effect of forced coughing (FC) with that of local anaesthetics (LA) or placebo during cervical biopsy. A total of 5 electronic databases—Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar—were systematically searched from inception till March 2021. Data were extracted from 6 randomised controlled trials and analysed. During cervical biopsy, the overall effect favoured LA over FC (mean difference [MD] = 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.58 to 1.54; P <0.0001). Compared to no pain management, pooled data were comparable between the two groups (MD = −1.2, 95% CI: −3.35 to 0.94; P = 0.27). Procedure duration was significantly longer in the LA group than in the FC group (MD = −1.94, 95% CI: −2.47 to −1.41; P <0.00001). FC and LA are both useful pain-lowering modalities during cervical biopsy, depending on the setting and their availability.

Fuzzycsampling: A Hybrid Fuzzy C-Means Clustering Sampling Strategy For Imbalanced Datasets, Abdullah Maraş, Çi̇ğdem Erol

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Classification model with imbalanced datasets is recently one of the most researched areas in machine learning applications since they induce to the emergence of low-performing machine learning models. The imbalanced datasets occur if target variables have an uneven number of examples in a dataset. The most prevalent solutions to imbalanced datasets can be categorized as data preprocessing, ensemble techniques, and cost-sensitive learning. In this article, we propose a new hybrid approach for binary classification, named FuzzyCSampling, which aims to increase model performance by ensembling fuzzy c-means clustering and data sampling solutions. This article compares the proposed approaches' results not only …

Vaupés Multilingualism And The Substance Of Language, Stephen Hugh-Jones Nov 2023

Vaupés Multilingualism And The Substance Of Language, Stephen Hugh-Jones

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

By focusing on ordinary conversational language, relying on a notion of “group” derived from unilineal descent theory, and neglecting mythology and ritual, studies of Vaupés Tukanoan multilingualism have inadvertently tended to reproduce a Western ideology of language as marking national identity and concerned with conveying meaning. This paper suggests that attention to musical, ritual, and shamanic contexts reveals multilingualism in a different light, with ritual speech acts as constitutive of social groups, names as vehicles of reproduction, and breath as a substance-like bodily element and source of vitality. The more esoteric, rhetorical, musical, or visual ornamentation is given to breath, …

Clever Animals: Naturalcultural Interactions In Karitiana Hunting Practices (Rondônia, Brazil), Felipe Vander Velden Nov 2023

Clever Animals: Naturalcultural Interactions In Karitiana Hunting Practices (Rondônia, Brazil), Felipe Vander Velden

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article addresses hunting practices and human-animal relations among the Karitiana, a Tupi-Arikém-speaking indigenous people in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon, asserting that if humans can learn from animals in long-lasting hunting experiences in the forest, animals can also learn how to deal with their human predators as well as their knowledge and techniques. Furthermore, animals must be understood here as species and individuals. This is an almost natural conclusion drawn from Amazonian ethnography, which suggests that distinctions between humans and the nonhumans that we call animals are not classified according to a categorization in which human beings have resourcefulness and …

Wilms tumors are highly curable in up to 90% of cases with a combination of surgery and radio-chemotherapy, but treatment-resistant types such as diffuse anaplastic Wilms tumors pose significant therapeutic challenges. Our multi-omics profiling unveils a distinct desert-like diffuse anaplastic Wilms tumor subtype marked by immune/stromal cell depletion, TP53 alterations, and cGAS-STING pathway downregulation, accounting for one-third of all diffuse anaplastic cases. This subtype, also characterized by reduced CD8 and CD3 infiltration and active oncogenic pathways involving histone deacetylase and DNA repair, correlates with poor clinical outcomes. These oncogenic pathways are found to be conserved in anaplastic Wilms tumor cell …

Attempts To Understand Oral Mucositis In Head And Neck Cancer Patients Through Omics Studies: A Narrative Review, Erin Marie D San Valentin, Kim-Anh Do, Sai-Ching J Yeung, Cielito C Reyes-Gibby

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Oral mucositis (OM) is a common and clinically impactful side effect of cytotoxic cancer treatment, particularly in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) who undergo radiotherapy with or without concomitant chemotherapy. The etiology and pathogenic mechanisms of OM are complex, multifaceted and elicit both direct and indirect damage to the mucosa. In this narrative review, we describe studies that use various omics methodologies (genomics, transcriptomics, microbiomics and metabolomics) in attempts to elucidate the biological pathways associated with the development or severity of OM. Integrating different omics into multi-omics approaches carries the potential to discover links among host …

How Are We Supposed To Respond To This?: Me Too As A Social Transformation Movement, Julia Dolfo De Castro Nov 2023

How Are We Supposed To Respond To This?: Me Too As A Social Transformation Movement, Julia Dolfo De Castro

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

This paper attempts to demonstrate how the Me Too movement is crucial in social transformation precisely because it demands a rethinking of current normativities, such as those surrounding gender and sexual norms, power relations, and culture. Through Nikolas Kompridis’s “reflective disclosure,” this paper argues that the Me Too movement as a critique employs a stance of receptivity to reinvigorate its critical perspectives and fuel its political commitments to freedom and transformation. This paper aims to accomplish two things: (1) to tackle the “burden” of hearers/listeners of “me too” to respond; (2) to introduce the possibilities of receptivity in social transformation …

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: The book presents an attempt to revisit and recontextualize approaches to contemporary Philippine Studies. It seeks to locate the field of study locally and globally, noting that there are different ways of interrogating and therefore, extending the discussions to cover the Philippines’s place in the global community. There is a growing global scholarship on Philippine Studies, making it possible to have a continuity of discussion from the past that is not limited to an essentialist approach but one that is cognizant of the plurality entailed by the global nature of contemporary discourse. Caroline Hau writes in the foreword that …

Arboreal Methodologies: Getting Lost To Explore The Potential Of The Non-Innocence Of Nature, Jayne Osgood, Suzanne Axelsson, Tamsin Cavaliero, Máire Hanniffy, Susan Mcdonnell

Occasional Paper Series

This paper recounts a workshop that took place in a polytunnel in a forest school in Sligo, North-West Ireland on a cold day in early-December. The event sought to materialize ‘arboreal methodologies’ (Osgood, 2019; Osgood & Odegard, 2022; Osgood & Axelsson, 2023) which are characterized by the enactment of feminist new materialist praxis to engage in world-making practices (Haraway, 2008) intended to unsettle recognizable tropes of biophilia that have come to frame both child and nature in narrow ways. The arboreal methodologies that participants were invited to mobilise were situated, material, affective, and involved metaphorical and material practices of ‘getting …

Trees In Our City How A Tree And A Small Patch Of Dirt Inspired A Classroom, Zuleika Hines

Occasional Paper Series

As a new Director in a new school, I knew that I wanted the children to have a curiosity for nature. But to lead the children to a place of discovery, they would need the opportunity to observe, play, and engage in elements of nature that would support hands-on activities both in the classroom and outside. When the opportunity came for me to build my own early childhood program, I knew that I had a unique opportunity to incorporate elements of nature in the design of the classroom. But I wanted nature to be local and the trees of our …

Forests, groves, parks as well as any area with fewer or more trees can be a suitable field for students' environmental awareness. Even a single tree as a subject of thoughtful observation can give children opportunities for discussion around many issues such as those of environmental protection, endangered species, human's relationship with nature and many more. Ιn addition to environmental awareness, trees can also contribute to the intercultural awareness of students. In all cultures without exception, trees and plants have a particularly important place and there are many myths, stories and traditions associated with them. Also, the great variety of …

Singing In Dark Times: Improvisational Singing With Children Amidst Ecological Crisis, Stephanie Schuurman-Olson

Occasional Paper Series

Through this research-creation project -- which is represented by a process-driven ten-minute video -- the author asks what ways of knowing emerge when children and adults, more-than-human, and inhuman engage in improvised singing together in an urban park? This project recognizes our current "dark times" within ecological collapse and operates from a space that hopes to build relationality with sonic ecologies through listening-and-singing experiences, while centering the voices of children and other singers within the ecologies we sing in-and-with.

Painting Our Treescapes: A Visual, Gretel Olson, Ingrid Olson, Stephanie Schuurman-Olson

Occasional Paper Series

Two children (ages 6 and 9) represent an afternoon spent in their urban, wintery treescape through visual art, photo documentation, and written narrative. The first piece, "My Imaginary Forest", considers the seasons, animals, and issues of artistic representation of nature. The second piece describes the relationship between a favourite tree and a child, and considers others -- both present and future -- who also occupy "Our Knotty Tree". All of the words, visual art, and photo selection are those of the children.

Engaging children and young people with the natural world has never been more important. The benefits of outdoor learning span from increased nature connection to improved self-esteem and physical wellbeing. But with so many potential risks and barriers, how can we help practitioners feel confident and capable in an outdoor setting and therefore improve access to green space for children and young people? The education team at the National Forest Company set out to tackle this challenge. The National Forest was established in the early 1990s in a post-industrial area of the English Midlands. It covers 200 square miles and …

Making Kin With Trees: Three Educators And Children Entangled With Treescapes, Stephanie Jones, Lindsey Lush, Sarah Whitaker Nov 2023

Making Kin With Trees: Three Educators And Children Entangled With Treescapes, Stephanie Jones, Lindsey Lush, Sarah Whitaker

Occasional Paper Series

In this article, three educators from one small U.S. city draw on Donna Haraway’s feminist, posthumanist idea of making kin to explore their personal relations with trees and their work as educators to support children’s entanglements with trees. Working in three very different contexts with children: a working-class neighborhood, a public school kindergarten, and a forest kindergarten, the three authors illuminate the “magical” emergences of making kin with trees that fundamentally shifts what becomes possible to do and be. Their writing contributes to the fields of critical childhood geographies, feminist posthumanist pedagogies in early childhood education, and writing in affect …

In recent years, there is a growing interest for attending to children’s voice in environmental research. The theoretical developments in knowledge about children view them as social agents who can make sense of their own experiences in relation to the environment surrounded them. In this report, we add reflections from an ongoing project “voices of the future” which aims to reimagine future of treescapes in the UK. Using examples from two primary schools in the northwest of England, we discuss children’s knowledge about trees and how children talk about their lived experiences with trees. Centring on our field work experiences, …

Traces Of Worms, Zoey Ashcroft

Occasional Paper Series

The setting was a day spent planting trees outside the school grounds. As Zoey and her classmates planted the trees, they also recorded the activity in their notebooks. The children noticed the worms that were wriggling in the ground. Zoey recorded an activity in which leaves and then worms were lifted from the earth, and the worms then explored the page where they were put. Afterward, the worms were lifted off the page and put back on the ground. The traces of the worms were left on the page. We were left with traces of worms.
