An Active Voice Coil Negative Stiffness Vibration Isolator With Application To Mobile 3d Printing, Lucas M. Schloemp
An Active Voice Coil Negative Stiffness Vibration Isolator With Application To Mobile 3d Printing, Lucas M. Schloemp
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Equipment whose performance degrades when exposed to base vibration is often deployed in vibration-rich environments. Using 3D printers in mobile applications, such as vehicles and ships, are typical examples where the extruder and bedplate are easily excited by base vibration. A versatile active vibration isolator is considered in this thesis constructed using a voice coil actuator and a laser displacement feedback sensor to achieve a wide range of dynamic response characteristics, including negative stiffness. This approach permits transmissibility shaping to meet band-limited base isolation requirements without active damping vibration control. A combination of simulation and hardware validation is used to …
Programming The Bistable Dynamic Vibration Absorbers Of A 1d-Metastructure For Adaptive Broadband Vibration Absorption, Shantanu H. Chavan
Programming The Bistable Dynamic Vibration Absorbers Of A 1d-Metastructure For Adaptive Broadband Vibration Absorption, Shantanu H. Chavan
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This research addresses a critical challenge in structural engineering—achieving comprehensive vibration control and energy dissipation in meta-structures. Departing from the limitations of passive structures with fixed bandgaps, we propose an innovative approach utilizing active meta-structures capable of dynamically tuning their bandgaps. The primary goal is to introduce an efficient method for programming meta-structures with multiple variable bandgaps, thereby enabling effective vibration attenuation across a broad frequency spectrum.
The methodology involves transforming passive resonators into bistable adaptable Dynamic Vibration Regulators (DVRs) through a sophisticated switching mechanism. This adaptation sets the stage for numerous unique combinations by independently switching each resonator. A …
Correlation Of And Development Of Procedure To Use A Resonant Plate With Mechanical Excitation For Shock Testing Small-To-Medium Size Spacecraft And Provide Aerospace Shock Analysis And Testing Guidelines, Monty Kennedy
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
In the aerospace industry it is known that performing shock analysis and testing on spacecraft is difficult to do mostly because shock loads create a very short duration shock wave transient that can have high acceleration peak levels (1,000-5,000 g) and wide frequency content (100-10,000 Hz). FE (finite-element) shock analysis is difficult because implicit linear FE software commonly used for most vibration analysis in aerospace does not account for shock wave propagation, reflection, and attenuation that occurs based upon the distance from the shock source at the base of the spacecraft and the attenuations that occurs through mechanical joints. Spacecraft …
Lorax (1971) By Dr. Seuss, Megan Jane Laverty
Lorax (1971) By Dr. Seuss, Megan Jane Laverty
Picture Books
Megan Jane Laverty interprets Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax (the 1971 book, the 1972 television cartoon, and the 2012 feature film) as a multi-layered philosophical fable. First, she examines how the story reveals the dangers of our enthusiastic but short-sighted pursuit of innovation, success, and wealth—ambitions that can lead to far-reaching and often tragic consequences. Secondly, she explores how the narrative vividly illustrates the environmental devastation that results when commercial enterprises treat nature as an inexhaustible resource for production and progress. Laverty proposes several ways for students to engage with the story’s philosophical themes, including the aesthetic exploration of their local …

The Livornese Slaves In Algiers: The Jewish Question And Political Theatre In Late Eighteenth-Century Tuscany, Francesca Bregoli, Andrea Addobbati
Publications and Research
This essay analyzes a recently discovered French play, Les esclaves livournais à Alger, authored by François Gariel in Livorno in 1786. The protagonist of the piece, which is full of allusions to contemporary Tuscan and European events and subtle references to classics of French Enlightenment literature, is a virtuous, Algiers-based Jewish merchant who preaches toleration for all peoples and religions and greatly admires the grand duke of Tuscany. Important context for understanding Gariel’s play and the Jewish question in Livorno is provided by the relocation in the 1780s of prominent Algerian Jewish families who had built their fortunes on the …

Α-Glucosidase Inhibitors From Rhynchostylis Retusa, Winartiana -
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
α-Glucosidase inhibitors are a group of anti-diabetic drugs that can help control blood sugar levels by hindering the breakdown of oligosaccharides and disaccharides into monosaccharides such as glucose, thus preventing intestinal absorption. Recent studies have shown that several plants in the Orchidaceae family produce secondary metabolites with α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Rhynchostylis retusa, an orchid traditionally used for treating various diseases such as asthma, diabetes, and obesity, was investigated. The methanol extract of R. retusa showed significant inhibitory activity against the enzyme α-glucosidase, with 85.71% inhibition at a concentration of 100 µg/ml. The objective of this study was to isolate and …

Answering The Call Of Revolutionary Love Through Literature: A Collaborative Autoethnography Framed In Toni Morrison's Beloved, Shekema S. Dunlap, D'Andrea N. Wright
Student Publications
Toni Morrison's Beloved challenges Western sensibilities about love, kinship, sacrifice, and spirituality. A Black teacher's dissertation study about revolutionary love (RL) for her Advanced Placement Literature students inspired this chapter. In it, the authors discuss two Black women teachers' kinship relationship and love for literature as revolutionary. Their collaborative autoethnographic account explores the influence of RL on mitigating the impact of intersectional oppression on our lived experiences. Moreover, the chapter illuminates the endarkened feminist underpinnings of their personal and spiritual connections: first, within a high school English classroom and now as colleagues and co-researchers. The chapter provides teaching strategies to …
Disruption And Emergence: How To Think About Human Rights Futures, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick
Disruption And Emergence: How To Think About Human Rights Futures, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick
School of Peace Studies: Faculty Scholarship
This article suggests that humanity may be approaching a critical juncture, since a confluence of macro-historical changes might—individually or collectively—fundamentally transform the field of human rights, and usher in a second human rights era. In particular, it suggests that the confluence of tectonic geopolitical changes, system-wide shifts in climate and energy, and fundamentally new developments in science and technology might lead to a rupture of the same scale as the cluster of events that heralded the onset of the current rights regime. This argument builds on a number of literatures, especially those focused on norms cycles, rights generations, and what …

Rapid Species Identification Of Meretrix Lusoria And Three Other Meretrix Clams Using Pcr And Rflp Analysis Of The Mitochondrial Coii Gene., Chia-Hsuan Sung, Liang-Jong Wang, Chang-Wen Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Meretrix clams are among the most economically important species of bivalves in Eastern Asia and Taiwan. In the past, the identification of these hard clams depended on the shell morphology; however, species identification based on shell markings and shapes confuses the taxonomy of the Meretrix genus. The DNA molecular information is useful and can easily identify them accurately and quickly, especially the sequence of mitochondrial DNA. In this study, a PCR method to analyze the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase II (COII) gene was developed to rapidly identify of M. lusoria, M. lamarckii, M. lyrata and M. petechialis. Four different species …

From A Humble Cry To A Holy Chaconne: The Background, Analysis, And Performance Guide To Chaconne For Tokkae, Op. 96 By M. W. Johann Kim, Jurang Kim
Theses and Dissertations--Music
The cries of animals have been used as motivic material in classical music literature throughout history. This project considers the Cambodian tocay gecko’s cry as the motif which embodies the harmonic structure in Chaconne for Tokkae for Violin and Piano, Op. 96 by Dr. Myung Whan Johann Kim. It reveals how Dr. Kim adapts unique compositional style and technique such as the bell harmony of Dr. Kurt Anton Hueber, to develop the theme into 39 colorful variations. The essential elements of the chaconne and the composer’s intentions are examined through personal interviews and correspondence with the composer. These elements are …

Gesture And The Auditory Impact On The Perception Of Sound: A Performance Guide For Understanding Gestural Function On Percussion Pedagogy And Performance, Emily Lane Durocher
Theses and Dissertations--Music
I will address the concept of physical gestures and discuss how they are applicable to the way percussionists visually and audibly perceive music. Through my research, I will focus on performance and pedagogy, seeking new possibilities for introducing percussionists at all ability levels to different articulations. Percussionists have traditionally been led to believe that they do not have the versatility over the initial musical attack and sustain that wind and string players do. This document has been developed to provide a more in-depth approach to how physical and musical gestures can function to create a more versatile and musical percussionist. …
A Defense Of Psalm Singing: Solutions To Contemporary Practice, Philip W. Webb
A Defense Of Psalm Singing: Solutions To Contemporary Practice, Philip W. Webb
Theses and Dissertations--Music
The history of singing the Biblical Psalms from the Old Testament goes back thousands of years. Early Jewish worship by the nation of Israel was centered upon singing the Psalms, and this formed the early musical worship of the first-century Christian church as well. Yet today this practice is only observed by a few denominations and has fallen out of style among mainline evangelical churches. There are Psalters being printed, but for the most part they still contain many of the traditional musical and lyrical structures that go back several hundred years. For many, these sacred texts have too much …
