The lifespan extension induced by 40% caloric restriction (CR) in rodents is accompanied by postponement of disease, preservation of function, and increased stress resistance. Whether CR elicits the same physiological and molecular responses in humans remains mostly unexplored. In the CALERIE study, 12% CR for 2 years in healthy humans induced minor losses of muscle mass (leg lean mass) without changes of muscle strength, but mechanisms for muscle quality preservation remained unclear. We performed high-depth RNA-Seq (387–618 million paired reads) on human vastus lateralis muscle biopsies collected from the CALERIE participants at baseline, 12- and 24-month follow-up from the 90 …
Design And Modeling Of A Hybrid-Electric Drone System For Conversion, Mark Atttaalla
Design And Modeling Of A Hybrid-Electric Drone System For Conversion, Mark Atttaalla
Electrical Engineering
With the increased use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the need for long range high capacity (>1kg) drones has also increased. While these drones do exist, they use complicated and complex technology that proportionately increases the price and barrier to entry for these drones. The goal of this paper is to look at different designs for hybrid electric drones, model the series-hybrid design, and create a low-cost alternative drone that uses off the shelf components. A primary purpose for this document is to present the information required to recreate a similar

Evaluation Of A Cue Associated With Alternative Reinforcement To Mitigate Resurgence, Hayley Brown
Masters Theses
Treatment relapse due to the extinction of a previously reinforced alternative behavior is known as resurgence. Understanding the conditions under which resurgence is mitigated may be important for improving the maintenance of the effects of interventions. One method that has been found to effectively mitigate resurgence is pairing a cue or stimulus with alternative reinforcement and then continuing to present that cue when alternative reinforcement is terminated. Animal studies have found that cues must be paired with alternative reinforcement and target extinction to be effective. However, this finding has not yet been replicated with humans. Demonstration of a similar effect …
Proteomic Analysis Reveals Fkbp51 And Fkbp52 Interactors Implicated In Androgen Receptor-Mediated Castration Resistant Prostate Cancer, Olga Soto
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Aberrant signaling mechanisms by the Androgen Receptor (AR) are attributed as the main culprits for the initiation and progression of prostate cancer (PCa). Due to its dependence on androgens, research efforts have focused on developing strategies to directly target androgen-mediated receptor activity. However, given the recurrence and treatment resistance of PCa despite androgen targeted therapies, recent efforts have shifted to find novel targets against the disease. These efforts include further revealing the molecular components and their mechanisms underlying AR signaling in both normal and disease physiological settings. Hence, our lab's work is focused on characterizing and targeting molecular chaperones that …

Make The U In Uda Matter: Invariant Consistency Learning For Unsupervised Domain Adaptation, Zhongqi Yue, Qianru Sun, Hanwang Zhang
Make The U In Uda Matter: Invariant Consistency Learning For Unsupervised Domain Adaptation, Zhongqi Yue, Qianru Sun, Hanwang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Domain Adaptation (DA) is always challenged by the spurious correlation between domain-invariant features (e.g., class identity) and domain-specific features (e.g., environment) that do not generalize to the target domain. Unfortunately, even enriched with additional unsupervised target domains, existing Unsupervised DA (UDA) methods still suffer from it. This is because the source domain supervision only considers the target domain samples as auxiliary data (e.g., by pseudo-labeling), yet the inherent distribution in the target domain—where the valuable de-correlation clues hide—is disregarded. We propose to make the U in UDA matter by giving equal status to the two domains. Specifically, we learn an …
Cultural Control Tactics For Managing Spotted Wing Drosophila, Drosophila Suzukii, In New Hampshire Highbush Blueberry, Catherine Doheny Coverdale
Cultural Control Tactics For Managing Spotted Wing Drosophila, Drosophila Suzukii, In New Hampshire Highbush Blueberry, Catherine Doheny Coverdale
Master's Theses and Capstones
Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is an economically important pest that damages small, soft-skinned fruits. Female spotted wing drosophila (SWD) have a heavily sclerotized, serrated ovipositor which allows them to lay their eggs in ripe and ripening fruits. Woven polyethylene weed mat has been reported to influence ambient temperature and relative humidity within blueberry canopies. There is a lack of context-specific evidence regarding the mechanisms impacting its efficacy and how it may interact with other control methods, like crop sanitizer sprays containing peroxyacetic acid (PAA) and hydrogen peroxide (HP).This study was a two-year, split-plot field experiment in …

ABSTRACT
Population Viability Analysis of a Remnant New England Cottontail Population in Southern New Hampshire
ByBrett Ferry University of New Hampshire, December 2023
Early successional forest in the northeastern United States provides habitat for a rich diversity of wildlife. Historically, weather events, beaver activity, and fires were continually creating a mosaic of early successional habitat. However, with modern land use very little early successional habitat is created, leading to the decline of the species’ that rely on it. New England cottontail (sylvilagus transitionalis) is an early successional obligate species whose population has been in decline since the mid-twentieth century. In …
Avian Functional Diversity Response To Changes In Forest Structure And Degradation In Northern New England, Michael Christopher Thompson
Avian Functional Diversity Response To Changes In Forest Structure And Degradation In Northern New England, Michael Christopher Thompson
Master's Theses and Capstones
Exploitative forest harvesting has led to widespread economic degradation of forests across the northeastern United States. Tree species composition and structure vary across degradation categories, which may lead to differences in wildlife communities and the ecosystem functions wildlife provide. Avian communities in particular respond quickly to changes in habitat, are easy to survey, and contribute to a variety of important ecosystem functions. Here, we investigated the relationship between economic degradation and avian functional diversity focusing on the ecosystem functions of seed dispersal, nutrient cycling, and pest control. We found that avian functional diversity responded to degradation in a unimodal manner …

Seasonality In Terminus Ablation Rates For The Glaciers In Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), Aman K. C.
Seasonality In Terminus Ablation Rates For The Glaciers In Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), Aman K. C.
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Since the 1990s, the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) has undergone accelerated mass loss, with a substantial portion due to the dynamic effects of terminus retreat. Conventional assessments of dynamic mass loss, however often overlook the critical aspect of terminus change, focusing primarily on inland ice flow. In this thesis, I construct and analyze mass loss due to both temporal variations in ice flow and detachment of ice from the glacier terminus, called terminus ablation, for 55 marine-terminating glaciers in Greenland over a ten-year period from 2013 to 2023. I calculated terminus ablation rates using openly accessible data for terminus positions, …
Predicting Flower Stalk Production Of A Native Shrub Using Uav Structure-From-Motion Photogrammetry, Ryan Scott Wickersham
Predicting Flower Stalk Production Of A Native Shrub Using Uav Structure-From-Motion Photogrammetry, Ryan Scott Wickersham
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Climate change is threatening rangeland ecosystems, including increasing frequency of extreme weather, wildfire, and drought. Identifying which native plants are likely to be resilient to these ongoing changes is crucial for developing climate-smart restoration plans. Sagebrush is a foundational species across western rangeland, with variation in flower phenology and success that may indicate a pattern of resilience for the shrub and associated species. Analyzing sagebrush resilience through flowering success will help us understand how vulnerable sagebrush populations and post-restoration sites will respond to extreme weather events. We applied high-resolution remotely sensed data to map flower stalk production in sagebrush plants …

Jonathan Edwards On The Experience Of The Creation, Qingjun Luo
Jonathan Edwards On The Experience Of The Creation, Qingjun Luo
Yale Divinity School Theses
This thesis examines Jonathan Edwards' (1703-1758) notion of the experience of the creation. It argues that for Edwards, the human experience of the good creation, in its essence, is experiencing God Himself, especially its beauty that resembles God's. The experience is comprehensive, involving human intellect, volition, and body, and will continue in some manner to the new creation. Meanwhile, Edwards' occasionalism raises potential theological and philosophical issues regarding the integrity of creation, the persistence of human identity, and the continuation of this world to the next.

The Bronze Harvester: Ravaging And Plundering In Greek Warfare, Nicholas Lindberg
The Bronze Harvester: Ravaging And Plundering In Greek Warfare, Nicholas Lindberg
Classics
This article argues that the purpose of ravaging in Greek warfare was not to goad the enemy into fighting or to cause systematic economic harm but to facilitate plundering. The cereal harvest was commonly chosen as a time for invasion, because it maximized the amount of plunder an invading force could expect to find in the enemy countryside. While ravagers were unlikely to cause permanent economic harm to a community as a whole, they could imperil the livelihoods of individual farmers, both directly through theft and destruction and indirectly by preventing farmers from processing the harvest in a timely fashion. …

Knowledge Engineering and Data Science
Classifying plant species within the Liliaceae and Amaryllidaceae families presents inherent challenges due to the complex genetic diversity and overlapping morphological traits among species. This study explores the difficulties in accurate classification by comparing 11 supervised learning algorithms applied to DNA barcode data, aiming to enhance the precision of species family classification in these taxonomically intricate plant families. The ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase large sub-unit (rbcL) gene, selected as a DNA barcode locus for plants, is used to represent species within the Amaryllidaceae and Liliaceae families. The experimental results demonstrate that nearly all tested models achieve accurate species classification into the appropriate …

Motion Simulation And Risk Assessment Of Dropped Objects In Offshore Operations, Hanqi Yu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Subsea pipelines are a cost-effective and reliable way to transport hydrocarbons in offshore oil and gas development. However, dropped objects can pose hazards and cause damage to pipelines. This dissertation briefly introduces the hazards and hidden dangers caused by dropped containers, discusses motion simulation methods for different object shapes, and reviews risk assessment procedures for handling dropped objects in offshore operations. Ongoing research at the University of New Orleans' towing tank on dropped container models is also discussed. Using ANSYS Fluent, we simulate trajectories of container models and calculate relevant hydrodynamic coefficients for different dropped angles. We then apply risk …

Seagrass Epibiont Biodiversity In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Kathryn Wyssmann
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Epibionts on seagrass leaves contribute substantially to productivity and trophic interactions in seagrass ecosystems. Differences in epibiont assemblages and factors that contribute to epibiont diversity have been little studied on the seagrass Halodule wrightii in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM). We used a metabarcoding approach to describe epibiont assemblages on H. wrightii leaves in four bays across the nGoM and to test whether epibiont assemblages differed spatially at local levels (within bays) or regional levels (from west to east). Furthermore, we tested if epibiont diversity was related to environmental conditions and/or seagrass productivity. Epibiont assemblages differed significantly between bays …

Single-cell analyses parse the brain’s billions of neurons into thousands of ‘cell-type’ clusters residing in different brain structures1. Many cell types mediate their functions through targeted long-distance projections allowing interactions between specific cell types. Here we used epi-retro-seq2 to link single-cell epigenomes and cell types to long-distance projections for 33,034 neurons dissected from 32 different regions projecting to 24 different targets (225 source-to-target combinations) across the whole mouse brain. We highlight uses of these data for interrogating principles relating projection types to transcriptomics and epigenomics, and for addressing hypotheses about cell types and connections related to genetics. …

Recurrent Session Approach To Generative Association Rule Based Recommendation, Tubagus Arief Armanda, Ire Puspa Wardhani, Tubagus M. Akhriza, Tubagus M. Adrie Admira
Knowledge Engineering and Data Science
This article introduces a generative association rule (AR)-based recommendation system (RS) using a recurrent neural network approach implemented when a user searches for an item in a browsing session. It is proposed to overcome the limitations of the traditional AR-based RS which implements query-based sessions that are not adaptive to input series, thus failing to generate recommendations. The dataset used is accurate retail transaction data from online stores in Europe. The contribution of the proposed method is a next-item prediction model using LSTM, but what is trained to develop the model is an associative rule string, not a string of …
