This study recognises how Industry 4.0 is influencing labour market demands of graduating students and how ongoing discord between employers and educators regarding their preparation is driving work-integrated learning across the sector. Stakeholder involvement in capability development requires expected performance standards to benchmark students for learning and assessment purposes, especially in non-accredited contexts which lack defined standards of competency. Industry stakeholders were engaged to review, validate and extend an established capabilities framework to reflect mega-trends posed by contemporary work and to define dimensions of standardised assessment for the purpose of work-integrated learning. Findings highlighted the need for graduates that are …

Freshwater ichthyofauna is facing intensive stress as a result of urbanization and growing industries in Pakistan. The alien fish species are considered one of the major challenges due to their deleterious effects. Feeding habit analysis is a basic tool to evaluate the ecological stress on fish species residing in different habitats. The present study was designed to disclose the feeding overlap between Cyprinus carpio (Common Carp) and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Silver Carp) from Head Marala (river Chenab) and Mangla Dam (river Jhelum). For this purpose, 20 samples i.e. 10 from each site of each fish species out of total 40, were …

The range grazing livestock (cattles and goats) are afflicted by a significant skin/hide issue known as warble fly larval infestation, which is caused by the larvae of Hypoderma lineatum and Hypoderma bovis species which resulted in substantial economic losses to the leather industries. The life cycle of hypodermosis is complex, involving both ecto- and endoparasitic stages. Female warble flies deposit their eggs in rows of 5-8 on individual hairs of the host, often targeting the legs but also other areas. These eggs are securely attached to the hairs and a single female fly may lay as many as 800 eggs …

Co-transmission of multiple neurotransmitters from a single neuron increases the complexity of signaling information within defined neuronal circuits. Superficial short-axon cells in the olfactory bulb release both dopamine and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), yet the specific targets of these neurotransmitters and their respective roles in olfaction have remained unknown. Here, we implement intersectional genetics in mice to selectively block GABA or dopamine release from superficial short-axon cells to identify their distinct cellular targets, impact on circuit function, and behavioral contribution of each neurotransmitter toward olfactory behaviors. We provide functional and anatomical evidence for divergent superficial short-axon cell signaling onto downstream neurons …

Antimicrobial strategies for musculoskeletal infections are typically first developed with in vitro models. The In Vitro Section of the 2023 Orthopedic Research Society Musculoskeletal Infection international consensus meeting (ICM) probed our state of knowledge of in vitro systems with respect to bacteria and biofilm phenotype, standards, in vitro activity, and the ability to predict in vivo efficacy. A subset of ICM delegates performed systematic reviews on 15 questions and made recommendations and assessment of the level of evidence that were then voted on by 72 ICM delegates. Here, we report recommendations and rationale from the reviews and the results of …
Zirconia Implants: A Mapping Review, Steven J. Sadowsky
Zirconia Implants: A Mapping Review, Steven J. Sadowsky
Pacific Faculty Work
The advent of zirconia ceramics with excellent mechanical, biomechanical, and optical properties has made them attractive metal-free substitutes for titanium implants. Both animal and human studies have documented shortcomings with titanium implants. A mapping review of the current literature on three iterations of zirconia implant designs has been challenging due to heterogeneous success data and limited follow-up. Zirconia implants hold promise for a new generation of dental implants, but technical developments are needed for design and material enhancements that will need to be validated by long-term rigorous studies.

Enhanced Bmp Signaling In Cathepsin K-Positive Tendon Progenitors Induces Heterotopic Ossification, Hiroyuki Yamaguchi, Margaret Li, Megumi Kitami, Sowmya Swaminathan, Yuji Mishina, Yoshihiro Komatsu
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Heterotopic ossification (HO) is abnormal bone growth in soft tissues that results from injury, trauma, and rare genetic disorders. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are critical osteogenic regulators which are involved in HO. However, it remains unclear how BMP signaling interacts with other extracellular stimuli to form HO. To address this question, using the Cre-loxP recombination system in mice, we conditionally expressed the constitutively activated BMP type I receptor ALK2 with a Q207D mutation (Ca-ALK2) in Cathepsin K-Cre labeled tendon progenitors (hereafter “Ca-Alk2:Ctsk-Cre”). Ca-Alk2:Ctsk-Cre mice were viable but they formed spontaneous HO in the Achilles tendon. Histological and molecular …

The diagnosis and prognosis of teeth with endo-perio lesions present a major challenge for dentists. Proper diagnosis is critical in determining treatment and the long-term prognosis. However, treating complex endodontic and periodontal lesions is one of the most common challenges in current clinical practice. The coexistence of pulpal and periodontal tissue damage may complicate diagnosis and further influence dental prognosis. This article consists of a case report evaluating the efficacy of xenografts and resorbable membrane pericardium in treating bifurcation lesions associated with periodontal lesions of the left mandibular first molar. A 22-year-old female patient was referred by conservative dentistry with …

Background: The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has been associated with structural brain changes, consistent with its neurological manifestations. Recent studies showed a specific predilection for brainstem glial activation and hypometabolism, possibly indicating involvement of the locus coeruleus. The locus coeruleus (LC) modulates many cognitive functions and behaviors and its norepinephrine projections regulate both immune responses and vascular reactivity. We aimed to examine differences in LC integrity between COVID-19 survivors and controls.
Method: Participants are enrolled across 3 US and 1 UK sites using harmonized cognitive and 7T MR-imaging protocols. Here, we analyzed data from 18 participants enrolled at Houston Methodist (12 COVID-19 …

Background: Recent research suggests that differences in the gut microbiome composition may contribute to the pathogenesis of neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Animal studies have shown that fecal microbiota transplantation reduces amyloid plaques in mouse AD models. However, whether the buildup of Aβ and tau deposits in the brain are associated with shifts in the human gut microbiota composition is understudied.
Method: We used stool specimens and neuropathological measures from 140 middle-aged individuals (Table 1: mean age 56, 54% Female) from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) to assess the link between the gut microbiome composition and Aβ Positron …

High unpredictability has emerged as a dimension of early-life adversity that may contribute to a host of deleterious consequences later in life. Early-life unpredictability affects development of limbic and reward circuits in both rodents and humans, with a potential to increase sensitivity to stressors and mood symptoms later in life. Here, we examined the extent to which unpredictability during childhood was associated with changes in mood symptoms (anhedonia and general depression) after two adult life stressors, combat deployment and civilian reintegration, which were assessed ten years apart. We also examined how perceived stress and social support mediated and /or moderated …
When Deliberation Is Not Possible: Moral Dilemmas In Fundraising, Jessica Burgess, Jane Hudson, John White
When Deliberation Is Not Possible: Moral Dilemmas In Fundraising, Jessica Burgess, Jane Hudson, John White
Plymouth Business School
Extant literature highlights the importance of ethical fundraising, exacerbated by recent increased public attention and media criticism. Arguably this increased attention calls for a deeper examination and understanding of the types of moral scenarios and dilemmas fundraisers encounter. Furthermore, fundraisers are often under intense time pressure to solve the dilemma and thus require quick, on-the-spot decisions formulated from intuition. Currently there are limited resources and training to help fundraisers implement ethical fundraising in their work; additionally, there is negligible education or skills training to help guide them in scenarios requiring intuition. Moreover, current literature fails to examine what these situations …

The Fineview Dataset: A 3d Scanned Multi-View Object Dataset Of Fine-Grained Category Instances, Suguru Onda
Theses and Dissertations
In the past decade state-of-the-art deep learning models have shown impressive performance in many computer vision tasks by learning from large and diverse image datasets. Most of these datasets consist of web-scraped image collections. This approach, however, makes it very challenging to obtain desirable data such as multiple views of the same object, 3D geometric information, or camera parameters for a large-scale image dataset. In this paper, we propose a 3D-scanned multi-view 2D image dataset of fine-grained category instances with accurate camera calibration parameters. We describe our bi-directional, multi-camera and 3D scanning system and the data collection pipeline. Our target …

Role-Reversible Judgments And Related Democratic Objections To Ai Judges, Amin Ebrahimi Afrouzi
Role-Reversible Judgments And Related Democratic Objections To Ai Judges, Amin Ebrahimi Afrouzi
JCLC Online
In a recent article published by this journal, Kiel Brennan-Marquez and Stephen E. Henderson argue that replacing human judges with AI would violate the role-reversibility ideal of democratic governance. Unlike human judges, they argue, AI judges are not reciprocally vulnerable to the process and effects of their own decisions. I argue that role-reversibility, though a formal ideal of democratic governance, is in the service of substantive ends that may be independently achieved under AI judges. Thus, although role-reversibility is necessary for democratic governance when human judges are on the job, it may not be so when AI judges replace them. …

Science Communication Through Cool Critters: An Informal Learning Experience For Youth, Jamila Bajelan
Communication Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
There are numerous methods to communicate science, and one such method aims at increasing participants’ personal responses (awareness, enjoyment, interest, opinion, and understanding) of science. Informal science learning experiences, such as summer camps, are excellent settings to communicate science to young people. In addition, summer camps offer several opportunities to decrease the negative effects of the summer slide, a phenomenon that refers to the loss of students’ math and reading skills over the summer. For this study, I sought to build on this foundation and develop an informal learning experience for young people to communicate the science of native animals …

Palmitate Induces Integrated Stress Response And Lipoapoptosis In Trophoblasts, Prakash Kumar Sahoo, Chandan Krishnamoorthy, Jennifer R. Wood, Corrine Hanson, Ann Anderson-Berry, Justin L. Mott, Sathish Kumar Natarajan
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Maternal obesity increases the risk of childhood obesity and programs the offspring to develop metabolic syndrome later in their life. Palmitate is the predominant saturated free fatty acid (FFA) that is transported across the placenta to the fetus. We have recently shown that saturated FFA in the maternal circulation as a result of increased adipose tissue lipolysis in third trimester of pregnancy induces trophoblast lipoapoptosis. Here, we hypothesized that palmitate induces integrated stress response by activating mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and granular stress and lipoapoptosis in trophoblasts. Choriocarcinoma-derived third-trimester placental trophoblast-like cells (JEG-3 and JAR) referred …
The Effect Of Hedgerow Age On Vegetative Species Diversity, Matthew Blogg
The Effect Of Hedgerow Age On Vegetative Species Diversity, Matthew Blogg
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Hedgerows are a distinctive part of the English countryside and provide many ecological benefits and services. Over recent history, hedgerows have been removed and replanted, resulting in a matrix of different aged hedgerows across the country. In this study, the effect of hedgerow age on vegetative species diversity was tested to see if older hedgerows contained a higher species diversity than younger hedgerows. Four hedgerows of varying ages were tested on an urban farm in Plymouth, Southwest England. Percentage cover of each species was measured across ten samples in each hedgerow, with a Shannon’s diversity score being calculated for each …
Evaluating To What Extent The ‘Scientific Exemption Clause’ Acts As A Loophole And Influences International Whaling, Amy Wick
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The purpose of the study was to identify if the scientific exemption clause of the international whaling ban is a loophole for commercial hunting to continue under disguise and to evaluate the level of public perception towards whaling exemptions and longevity of policy. The study used secondary data from the International Whaling Commission to calculate total catch data for commercial and scientific brackets. It also used primary data in the form of questionnaires to identify public knowledge and belief. From the results, it was identified that Japan had the most consistent scientific programme and Norway the most consistent commercial programme. …

How Can Informal Education Settings Be Best Used To Influence Engagement With Environmental Issues?, Hayley L. Hill
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Increasing global impacts of environmental issues will affect children’s futures. Formal primary school curriculums are insufficient in providing the information children need to understand these issues which increases the need for informal education settings, such as extracurricular eco clubs. By studying how classroom-based clubs engage primary school children with environmental issues through motivations to join, activities undertaken within clubs, and level of engagement they inspire outside the sessions, recommendations can be made to maximise knowledge and engagement opportunities for children both in and out of sessions. Primary school children attending an after school eco club over five weeks were given …

A Landmark Environmental Law Looks Ahead, Robert L. Fischman
Articles by Maurer Faculty
In late December 1973, the United States enacted what some would come to call “the pitbull of environmental laws.” In the 50 years since, the formidable regulatory teeth of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) have been credited with considerable successes, obliging agencies to draw upon the best available science to protect species and habitats. Yet human pressures continue to push the planet toward extinctions on a massive scale. With that prospect looming, and with scientific understanding ever changing, Science invited experts to discuss how the ESA has evolved and what its future might hold.
