The incidence of empyema is increasing and associated with a mortality rate of 20% in patients older than 65 years. Since 30% of patients with advanced empyema have contraindications to surgical treatment, novel, low-dose, pharmacological treatments are needed. A Streptococcus pneumoniae-induced rabbit model of chronic empyema recapitulates the progression, loculation, fibrotic repair, and pleural thickening of human disease. Treatment with single chain (sc) urokinase (scuPA) or tissue type (sctPA) plasminogen activators in doses 1.0–4.0 mg/kg were only partially effective in this model. Docking Site Peptide (DSP; 8.0 mg/kg), which decreased the dose of sctPA for successful fibrinolytic therapy in acute …

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies
This paper presents students’ ideas for job guarantee public service projects, developed in a Master's level course, Economic Social and Ecological Systems. Seven student proposals address local issues and their economic, social, and ecological aspects. The proposals build on social costs, stratification, and commodification; and identify locally needed public service jobs not provided by the business sector. As part of a federally funded, locally designed, and administered job guarantee program, they expand and improve public and non-profit sectors. The article describes the course and its focus on integrated systems, as well as the pedagogy of building on students’ interests, concerns, …

Migrants, Covid-19, And Italy: A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Construction Of And Resistance To Nationalist Discourses, Alessia Barbici Wagner, Theresa Catalano, Bryan Meadows
Migrants, Covid-19, And Italy: A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Construction Of And Resistance To Nationalist Discourses, Alessia Barbici Wagner, Theresa Catalano, Bryan Meadows
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Migration has historically been a controversial issue around the world and one that has often been harnessed by people in power (or people hoping to gain power) for their own political agendas. In times of a global pandemic, the scapegoating of migrants has only increased, often rooted in nationalist ideologies which lead to policies and practices that harm migrants and the larger society. The present paper employs multimodal critical discourse analysis to explore how nationalist ideologies supported by right-wing populism are constructed visually and verbally during COVID-19 on Italian social media in regard to migration. We analyze Giorgia Meloni’s (leader …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This study examined the home literacy practices of bilingual families. We were specifically interested in the literacy practices families developed to answer the challenge of biliteracy. Through the home visits and supplying high quality bilingual books, we listened, observed, and gained a deeper understanding of the children and their families which allowed us and educators reading this piece to make connections between children’s home literacy practices and literacy practices in the classroom. After discussing the use of bilingual books, the following four themes emerged from the data: families negotiating biliteracy using bilingual books, the role of Spanish, siblings and literacy …
Creating Light At Tunnel’S End: Ukraine’S Post-War Urban Recovery, Russell W. Glenn
Creating Light At Tunnel’S End: Ukraine’S Post-War Urban Recovery, Russell W. Glenn
Journal of Strategic Security
The US response to Iraq’s recovery in the aftermath of 2003 Operation Iraqi Freedom suffered from an initial conclusion that it was the country’s petroleum infrastructure rather than its electrical networks that were in greater need of recovery resources. The resulting misallocation of resources delayed power restoration to much of the country and frustrated those in affected regions.
Whether the cause is war or a catastrophe sparked by Mother Nature, accurately identifying and correctly prioritizing post-disaster requirements is fundamental to an effective and efficient response. Ukraine has demonstrated a commendable ability to repair war damage even as conflict continues, but …

Can Marketing Transcend Entrenched Gender Biases?, Thinh Nguyen
Can Marketing Transcend Entrenched Gender Biases?, Thinh Nguyen
Marketing Faculty Publications
Through a feminist lens, Maclaran and Chatzidakis (2022) challenge conventional assumptions about gender, emphasizing its performative nature shaped by social practices rather than inherent traits. This commentary extends analyses of key themes such as gender performativity, the male gaze, and subject-object binaries within marketing. It critiques how marketing strategies reinforce existing power imbalances and systemic biases rooted in historical narratives. The writing also reflects on media interpretations of gender issues through films like 'Turning Red' and 'Barbie'. By contextualizing gendered marketing within broader societal frameworks, this writing contributes to ongoing dialogues in media studies, sociology, and gender studies, highlighting the …
The New Fourth Era Of American Religious Freedom, John Witte Jr., Eric Wang
The New Fourth Era Of American Religious Freedom, John Witte Jr., Eric Wang
Faculty Articles
The U.S. Supreme Court has entered decisively into a new fourth era of American religious freedom. In the first era, from 1776 to 1940, the Court largely left governance of religious freedom to the individual states and did little to enforce the First Amendment Religion Clauses. In the second era, from 1940 to 1990, the Court “incorporated” the First Amendment into the Fourteenth Amendment Due Process Clause and applied both a strong Free Exercise Clause and a strong Establishment Clause against federal, state, and local governments alike. In the third era, from the mid-1980s to 2010, the Court softened the …

Thinly Rooted: Dobbs, Tradition, And Reproductive Justice, Darren L. Hutchinson
Faculty Articles
In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey. These two cases held that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment encompassed a right of women to terminate a pregnancy. Roe reflected over 60 years of substantive due process precedent finding and reaffirming a constitutional right of privacy with several animating themes, including bodily integrity, equality, and dignity. The Court’s substantive due process doctrine had established that the analysis in such cases would involve multiple points of inquiry, such as tradition, contemporary practices, and …
The Effects Of Nausea And Vomiting On Mother And Child, Mayane Bensoussan
The Effects Of Nausea And Vomiting On Mother And Child, Mayane Bensoussan
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Nausea and vomiting are common side effects that can occur during pregnancy. On one hand, it can lead to its severe form called hyperemesis gravidarum, which can lead to hospitalization for electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, muscle weakness, or arrhythmias. On the other hand, nausea and vomiting may be an indication of a statistically healthier fetus. Benefits of maternal nausea and emesis to the developing fetus include improved neural development, decreased risk for congenital heart defects, and decreased incidence of miscarriages. Additionally, benefits to the mother include decreased risk for lung, cervical, and rectal cancer. The mothers also had an overall decreased …
Effects Of Microdosing With Psilocybin Mushrooms, Chavivah Davis
Effects Of Microdosing With Psilocybin Mushrooms, Chavivah Davis
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Microdosing with psilocybin, a psychoactive compound found in certain species of mushrooms, has gained popularity in recent years as a means of enhancing mood, cognition, and creativity without inducing the full-blown psychedelic experience. There are many potential benefits associated with microdosing with psilocybin. Although studies do show many positive effects of microdosing with psilocybin, long-term research is required to make a conclusive statement regarding this topic. Furthermore, there are risks and concerns involved that need to be considered, including the illegality of psilocybin and the lack of research. This paper will review the available literature on microdosing with psilocybin. It …
Epinephrine And Cardiac Arrest: The Catch-22, Shaina Friedman
Epinephrine And Cardiac Arrest: The Catch-22, Shaina Friedman
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Epinephrine has been a standard of care treatment for cardiac arrest for the last century; however, the use of epinephrine began without a significant amount of research. In recent years, many have started to question whether epinephrine is an appropriate treatment for cardiac arrest. While epinephrine causes vasoconstriction of the blood vessels and directs much-needed blood flow to the heart, it has also been shown to harm the microvessels of the brain, causing ischemia and neurological damage. Many trials, studies, and surveys were conducted to determine the correct course of action involving the use of epinephrine during cardiac arrest. Additional …
The Impact Of Maternal Health On Breastfeeding Duration, Yael Weinberg
The Impact Of Maternal Health On Breastfeeding Duration, Yael Weinberg
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
The mechanism of breastfeeding is a complex biological process beginning with hormone production from the pituitary gland and ending with the ejection of milk from the breasts. Mothers are recommended to breastfeed exclusively for six months and then continue for another six with the addition of solid food. However, despite the countless health benefits associated with lengthened breastfeeding for both mother and infant, many women dismiss this recommendation. This paper aims to research the aspects of maternal health that can derail the recommended duration of breastfeeding, focusing on emotional health, nutritional intake, and various diseases or surgeries. It is found …
Do The Benefits Of Growth Hormone Outweigh The Risks?, Michael D. Goodstein
Do The Benefits Of Growth Hormone Outweigh The Risks?, Michael D. Goodstein
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Growth hormone treatment was introduced in the 1950s to confront growth hormone deficiency and metabolic irregularities. In 2003, however, the FDA approved growth hormone treatment for patients with abnormal growth rates unlinked to growth hormone deficiency. The treatment has become largely available to the general public, making the safety of growth hormone treatment an extremely important subject. This paper clarifies the benefits and efficacy of growth hormone treatment and analyzes the potential associated risks, including cancer and diabetes.
Smells Like Money: A Proposal To Re-Examine The Illinois Right-To-Farm Act, Callah Wright
Smells Like Money: A Proposal To Re-Examine The Illinois Right-To-Farm Act, Callah Wright
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Since 1973, every state has passed a Right-to-Farm Act (“RTFA”). These Acts are in place to (1) strengthen the legal position of farmers when neighbors take legal action for private nuisance; and (2) to protect farmers from local and state ordinances that restrict agriculture production. This Note argues that Illinois’ RTFA should be amended as the statute lacks clarity on many aspects and consistency throughout the state’s circuit courts. Further, the statute is silent on many issues that other states have included in their Acts, such as zoning, damage caps, a statute of limitations, and management requirements. Three states––North Carolina, …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) is a prominent freshwater fish in Thai aquaculture. It has long been afflicted by severe bacterial diseases, ulcerative syndrome, and hemorrhagic septicemia, primarily caused by Aeromonas veronii. Vaccination is a key strategy for control and prevention. In this study a chitosan nano-immersion vaccine has been developed using a nanoemulsion technique and surface modification method with chitosan polymers. The physicochemical properties, mucoadhesive properties, immune response assays, and vaccine efficacy were investigated. The results showed that the vaccine is spherical-shaped, nanometer-sized, and having monodispersed positive charge. The mucoadhesive characterization, observed by SEM and fluorescence microscope imaging, demonstrated that …

The Expressions Of Mhc Class I And Class Ii In Biopsy Tissues By Immunohistochemistry And The Effect Of Interferon-Gamma (Ifn-Γ) On In Vitro Established Canine Cutaneous Mast Cell Tumors, Sudchaya Bhanpattanakul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Canine mast cell tumors (MCT), common skin tumors in dogs, present difficulties in treatment, emphasizing the need for effective therapeutic protocols. The cancer-immunity cycle's complex interactions between cancer and the immune system play a crucial role in tumor growth. Tumors often evade immune response by downregulating MHC expression, hindering T-cell recognition. Cancer immunotherapy is a promising approach that utilizes the patient's immune system for combating cancer. Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), a potent immune substance, plays a crucial role in enhancing MHC expression and immune functionality, crucial for T-cell recognition and cancer cell elimination. Limited research exists on MHC expression, tumor immune response, …

Upscale Production Of Canine Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Exosomes For Wound Healing In Vitro, Yudith Violetta Pamulang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-derived exosomes) have been previously reported to enhance wound healing across different phases. However, its practical application has been hindered due to challenges regarding low productivity and the lack of efficient production protocol. Additionally, the usage of exosome-based regenerative treatments in the veterinary field remains relatively unexplored. Hence, this study aimed to address these gaps by establishing a potential upscaling protocol producing canine adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (cAD-MSC-exosomes) and exploring their wound healing potential in vitro. To facilitate production protocol establishment, an in-house exosome-collecting media, designated as VSCBIC-3, was preliminarily developed. Building upon this foundation, …

Development Of A Latex Agglutination Test Based On Vh Antibody Fragment For Detection Of Streptococcus Suis Serotype 2, Kiratika Chidkoksung
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (S. suis 2) is an important porcine pathogen that causes diseases in both swine and humans. For rapid S. suis 2 identification, a novel latex agglutination test (LAT) based on heavy-chain variable domain antibody (VH) was developed. Firstly, the soluble 47B3 VH antibody fragment from a phage display library, in which cysteine residues were engineered at the C-terminus, was expressed in Escherichia coli. The purified protein was then gently reduced to form monomeric soluble 47B3 VH subsequently used to coat with latex beads by means of site-specific conjugation. The detection sensitivity was found to be as …

Introduction As a result of several military coups and internal armed conflicts, Myanmar has the longest history of civilian wars in the world. Human rights violations, gender-based violence, and sexual violence have become more widespread as a result of extensive conflicts and humanitarian crises. The United Nations is concerned about the detrimental consequences of sexual violence in military situations. A community-based program designed to prevent sexual violence is crucial in mitigating risk factors and enhancing protective factors Methods The two-group quasi-experimental study evaluated the impact of a community-based program to prevent sexual violence and examined the experiences of survivors among …
Role Of Grb2 Intracellular Localization In Progesterone Receptor Positive Breast Cancer, Nattamolphan Wittayavimol
Role Of Grb2 Intracellular Localization In Progesterone Receptor Positive Breast Cancer, Nattamolphan Wittayavimol
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Progesterone receptor (PR) extranuclear signaling mediates mainly through PR polyproline domain (PPD) interaction with SH3 domain of cytoplasmic signaling molecules. PR-PPD interfered with Grb2-SOS binding through SH3 interaction resulting in decreased cell proliferation and correlates with a good prognosis in PR positive breast cancer. Grb2 is a key adaptor molecule and expressed in both nucleus and cytoplasm. We hypothesized that change in Grb2 localization alters PR transcription resulting in better clinical outcomes in PR positive breast cancer. BT-474 breast cancer cells expressing inducible Grb2-SV402x (nuclear Grb2, nuGrb2) or Grb2-MYR (membrane Grb2, memGrb2) were constructed. MemGrb2-BT-474 showed higher levels of PR …

Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction Of Cannabis Sativa And Biological Activities Assessments For Dermatological Application, Pannita Kongtananeti
Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction Of Cannabis Sativa And Biological Activities Assessments For Dermatological Application, Pannita Kongtananeti
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cannabis sativa L. is a medicinal plant that has long been used in Thai traditional medicine and is still widely used today, with many uses in pharmaceuticals, including the treatment of skin infections. It contains a complex mixture of secondary metabolites, including cannabinoids and non-cannabinoid-type constituents, especially detla-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and terpenes. However, fewer studies of cannabis have been reported regarding its anti-aging potential by investigating tyrosinase inhibition activity. In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of 5 different parts of Cannabis sativa L., the determination of bioactive compounds using GC–MS/MS and the assessment of their biological properties related to …
