Recent technological advances in high-throughput phenotyping have created new opportunities for the prediction of complex traits. In particular, phenomic prediction using hyperspectral reflectance could capture various signals that affect phenotypes genomic prediction might not explain. A total of 360 inbred maize (Zea mays L.) lines with or without plant growth-promoting bacterial inoculation management under nitrogen stress were evaluated using 150 spectral wavelengths ranging from 386 to 1,021 nm and 13,826 single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Six prediction models were explored to assess the predictive ability of hyperspectral and genomic data for inoculation status and plant growth-related traits. The best models for hyperspectral prediction …

Integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the automotive industry has brought benefits as well as security challenges. Significant benefits include enhanced passenger safety and more comprehensive vehicle performance diagnostics. However, current onboard and remote vehicle diagnostics do not include the ability to detect counterfeit parts. A method is needed to verify authentic parts along the automotive supply chain from manufacture through installation and to coordinate part authentication with a secure database. In this study, we develop an architecture for anti-counterfeiting in automotive supply chains. The core of the architecture consists of a cyber-physical trust anchor and authentication mechanisms …
The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Exports In Africa: An Approach Based On Fractional Integration, Robert Mudida, Luis A. Gil-Alana, Gema Lopez
The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Exports In Africa: An Approach Based On Fractional Integration, Robert Mudida, Luis A. Gil-Alana, Gema Lopez
Journal of African Trade
This paper examines the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on exports in Africa. Fractional integration methods were applied to monthly African exports from 26 African countries from January 2011 to December 2020. We observe that the order of integration is found to be statistically smaller than 1 in all except a single country, Angola. For the rest of the African countries, shocks are transitory, showing mean reversion though with a large degree of heterogeneity across the countries, ranging from low levels of persistence with short memory behaviour in Sao Tome and Principle, the Seychelles and Kenya to high levels of …
Behavioral Diversity And Biomechanical Determinants Of The Outcome Of A Fish Predator–Prey Interaction, Milton Q.G.A., Iii, Philip Bergmann
Behavioral Diversity And Biomechanical Determinants Of The Outcome Of A Fish Predator–Prey Interaction, Milton Q.G.A., Iii, Philip Bergmann
Biology
Predator–prey interactions are ubiquitous and under strong selection because of the consequences experienced by both predator and prey if they lose the interaction. Biomechanics and behavior play important roles in the outcome of these interactions, but many studies focus on the prey, restrict the range of behaviors considered, and the role of prey boldness in the outcome is not understood. We used high-speed video to test for effects of multiple measures of performance and kinematics of both the predator and prey, and boldness of prey on the outcome of interactions between Pike Cichlids (Crenicichla sp.) and Guppies (Poecilia reticulata). We …

Modulatory Effects Of Deacetylated Sialic Acids (A Sugar Residue) In Nk-Mediated Cytotoxicity And Targeted Therapy By Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors, Mathias Tawiah Anim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The complex nature of the biology of cancer is still an unraveling science, yielding several biomarkers that have served as molecular targets for detection and treatment of the disease. How sugars, glycans, play a role has remained relatively uninvestigated. Sialic acid (Sia), a sugar residue on the surface of cells, has been identified as a hallmark of cancer and its progression. Sialic acid can be highly functionalized, but we became interested in acetylated Sias. This functional group is modulated by Sialate O- acetylesterase (encoded by the gene SIAE) and Sialate O-acetyltransferase (encoded by CASD1), enzymes that play a crucial role …
Relating Predator Community Ecology And Duck Nest Survival In Eastern South Dakota, Samantha R. Fino
Relating Predator Community Ecology And Duck Nest Survival In Eastern South Dakota, Samantha R. Fino
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As conversion of native grasslands and wetlands to croplands continues in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR), managers are tasked with maintaining sustainable waterfowl populations. Mesopredator community dynamics is a hypothesized mechanism driving spatiotemporal variation of waterfowl nest survival in the PPR, yet studies often lack detailed information on mesopredator species occurrence and abundance. Therefore, understanding spatial and temporal variation in behaviors of mesopredators provides valuable insights for understanding predator-prey interactions between mesopredators and upland duck nests. Further, differences in a predator community resulting from lethal removal of dominant species may influence composition and space use patterns of subordinate and non-target …
Fighting For What Is Right: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Fan Campaign To Save Anne With An E From Cancellation, Marie E. Anderson
Fighting For What Is Right: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Fan Campaign To Save Anne With An E From Cancellation, Marie E. Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Anne with an E fan campaign highlighted storylines of social issues that fans felt were important for society. Of particular interest to the fan community was a storyline from the series in which Anne and her friends organized a protest following incidents of sexual assault and censorship aimed at silencing girls from speaking out on gendered issues. This storyline was heavily referenced in the billboards that the fan-based campaign displayed in Toronto and New York City (Anne Nation, 2020). In this analysis, I used fantasy theme analysis (Bormann, 1972) and metaphorical criticism (Osborn, 2018) to conduct a visual and …

Uit-Adrone: A Novel Drone Dataset For Traffic Anomaly Detection, Tung Minh Tran, Tu N. Vu, Tam Nguyen, Khang Nguyen
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Anomaly detection plays an increasingly important role in video surveillance and is one of the issues that have attracted various communities, such as computer vision, machine learning, and data mining in recent years. Moreover, drones equipped with cameras have quickly been deployed to a wide range of applications, starting from border security applications to street monitoring systems. However, there is a notable lack of adequate drone-based datasets available to detect unusual events in the urban traffic environment, especially in roundabouts, due to the density of interaction between road users and vehicles. To promote the development of anomalous event detection with …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Different genotypes of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) in poultry are circulating worldwide. The most efficient classification system for IBV genotypes is based on the complete sequencing of S1 gene, and the target organ can be trachea, kidney, oviduct, lung, esophagus, proventriculus, intestine, liver, spleen, bursa, cecal tonsils, cloaca, and testis. In Iran, IBV genotyping is usually performed by partial sequencing of S1 gene, and the trachea is often selected for sampling. This study applies a different genotyping method, and compares the results with the routine method of genotyping. Samples were collected from the trachea and kidneys of 50 broiler flocks …

Halloween 2023: It's A Barbie World!, Jin-A Choi, Yi Luo, Bond Benton, Keith Green
College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works
Move over, black and orange, and step aside for the color that is going to dominate Halloween this year, “Barbie Pink.” And yes, Ken, “it won’t matter what you do, you will always be number two,” at least when it comes to Halloween costumes in 2023. And those wildly popular Star Wars and Marvel character costumes traditionally seen during the “spookiest” time of the year? It seems they won’t match the popularity of the fictional character, Barbie, who reemerged this year on the pop culture scene after the incredible success of the Warner Bros. film “Barbie” released in July.

Property And The Right To Enter, Bethany Berger
Property And The Right To Enter, Bethany Berger
Faculty Articles and Papers
On June 23, 2021, the Supreme Court decided Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid, holding that laws that authorize entry to land are takings without regard to duration, impact, or the public interest. The decision runs roughshod over precedent, but it does something more. It undermines the important place of rights to enter in preserving the virtues of property itself. This Article examines rights to enter as a matter of theory, tradition, and constitutional law, arguing that the law has always recognized their essential role. Throughout history, moreover, expansions of legal exclusion have often reflected unjust domination antithetical to property norms. …

Recent controversy over the FDA's approval of the Alzheimer's therapy Aduhelm (aducanumab) and the Duchenne muscular dystrophy therapy Exondys 51 (eteplirsen) called into question the impartiality and independence of high-level FDA regulators. Atypical associations between FDA regulators and pharmaceutical company sponsors, in addition to fierce internal disputes over the adequacy of the evidence, elicited criticism and triggered concern about potential undue influence at the FDA. The revolving door is one persistent source of undue influence that overshadows the discharge of FDA regulators' duties to the public. Exit from government to private-sector employment via the "revolving door" is a frequent occurrence …

Satire As Confirmation Bias: South Park Meets The Simpsons, Nicholas Antonoff
Research Days Posters 2023
In this paper, I contrast The Simpsons and South Park to highlight how differing satirical strategies have the potential to spread disinformation through confirmation basis. The creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, employ a satirical strategy that does not seek approval or input from the objects of their satire. In contrast, the creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening, seeks approval and agreement from the objects of their satire. Their different approaches to how they present their content to their audience coupled with the concepts of confirmation bias serve as yet another way for the possible spreading of …

Chronic Wasting Disease: Crossing The Species Barrier Into Human Populations, Stephanie Barrett, Shruti Venkatesh, Robert Johnson
Research Days Posters 2023
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a prion disease causing degeneration of the centralnervous system within various species of deer, elk, moose and caribou, collectively known as cervids. CWD originated in Colorado in the 1960s and has spread to 29 states, four Canadian provinces, three Scandinavian countries and South Korea. Prions are excreted through bodily fluids, waste, and decomposing carcasses that remain inthe environment, posing a potential threat to other species. A significant number of people are directly exposed to CWD prions through handling and consumption of contaminated cervid carcasses and using cervid brains for tanning. Similar exposure, through incorporation of …

While football (soccer) is widely known for its captivating atmospheres and immense camaraderie, one must not be blinded to the sinister behavior of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) [International Federation of Association Football] in recent times, especially amid the sought-after World Cup, hosted in Qatar, involving massive projects made possible through irresistible sums of money. Capitalism operates as a double-edged sword being that it is more than capable of bringing about growth and prosperity while simultaneously producing social conflict and human degradation, which is often disregarded by the former. The power-hungry Gulf-state has prioritized enticing profits over the …
