At The Intersection Of Functionality And Beauty: A Study Of The Carrara Herbal, Anna Grace Robinson
At The Intersection Of Functionality And Beauty: A Study Of The Carrara Herbal, Anna Grace Robinson
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
The Carrara Herbal is a manuscript that sits at the cusp between medieval and early Renaissance work in Padua, Italy. With medical “simples,” or singular ingredients to be combined, as its primary focus, the Herbal is heavily illustrated and illuminated (the process of decorating a manuscript with color and even precious metals like gold), demonstrating the commissioner’s intentions and establishing him as a leader in the field of botanical medical knowledge. However, the intent and practical use seem to be at odds in the case of the Carrara Herbal. As six centuries passed, the manuscript was actively used and revised …
Can Superman Save The Supreme Court After Dobbs? Using Analogical Reasoning To Teach The American People The Superpower Of Stare Decisis, Brandon Stump
Cleveland State Law Review
In this Article, I propose that in this post-Dobbs America, if Americans are ever able to believe in, or even understand the magnitude of the Supreme Court’s power, practitioners, scholars, and educators should rely on the power of analogical reasoning, something attorneys are taught beginning their first weeks of law school. Using the power of analogy, we should take the simple story of Superman to explain the magnitude of the power held by the Supreme Court and the critical role that stare decisis must play in the Court’s decision-making. Perhaps if we explain legal principles and the judiciary by …

At Noon: (Post)Nihilistic Temporalities In The Age Of Machine-Learning Algorithms That Speak, Talha Issevenler
Publications and Research
This article recapitulates and develops the attempts in the Nietzschean traditions to address and overcome the proliferation of nihilism that Nietzsche predicted to unfold in the next 200 years (WP 2). Nietzsche approached nihilism not merely as a psychology but as a labyrinthic and pervasive historical process whereby the highest values of culture and founding assumptions of philosophical thought prevented the further flourishing of life. Therefore, he thought nihilism had to be encountered and experienced on many, often opposing, fronts to be fully consumed and left behind. Thus, just as Nietzsche captured the subtle reinventions of nihilism in new forms …

Economic Governance And Violence: A Cross-National Analysis, Steven Mccain
Economic Governance And Violence: A Cross-National Analysis, Steven Mccain
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding how economic governance influences routine activities is crucial within the field of criminology to better understand how grounds for violence emerge. Literature of cross-national studies concerning the effects of economic governance has recently developed to study its relationship with violence, specifically homicide. However, there is a deficit of frameworks related to criminological theory in this literature. Using a routine activity framework, the current dissertation seeks understand how different degrees of economic governance in general and, more specifically, the five areas of economic governance – size of government, legal system and property rights, sound money, freedom to international trade, and …

The Power Or Words: Increasing Student Vocabulary Acquisition, Kelly M. Tiers
Masters Projects
A lack of vocabulary knowledge may have an influence on student reading comprehension. Reading comprehension, a fundamental, skill, hinges on understanding unknown vocabulary. The research highlights the significant correlation between reading comprehension and vocabulary knowledge, stressing its increasing importance as students encounter more complex text. This project explores the importance vocabulary plays in reading comprehension and its link to overall academic success. It further explores strategies to effectively increase student vocabulary and comprehension. The project is designed for elementary classrooms (K-6) to be integrated into existing lessons and routines. An in-service session, part of a district-wide professional development day, will …
Structural Basis Of Gating In Msl Channels, Jingying Zhang
Structural Basis Of Gating In Msl Channels, Jingying Zhang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
All living organisms experience exogenous and endogenous mechanical stress that are fundamental to their growth, survival, and development. A prominent strategy to manage these stresses and ensure efficient physiological responses is through mechanosensitive (MS) ion channels by transforming mechanical forces into electrochemical signaling. However, given their structural diversity and the inherent challenges of applying membrane tension during structural study, how MS channels sense mechanical force and transit into different functional states remain unclear. MSL channels in plants, members of the mechanosensitive ion channel of small conductance (MscS) superfamily, provide a compelling avenue for studying the structural basis for gating of …

That Thing Ain't Human: The Artificiality Of "Human Authorship" And The Intelligence In Expanding Copyright Authorship To Fully-Autonomous Ai, Ernest Oleksy
Cleveland State Law Review
The U.S. Copyright Review Board (the "Board") decided that works entirely created by fully-autonomous artificial intelligence ("AI") are not entitled to copyright protections. The Board based its decision on a copyrightability requirement referred to as “human authorship.” However, the Copyright Act of 1976 (the "Act") never mentions a “human” requirement to copyright authorship, nor do most of the Board’s cited authorities. Denying authorship to intellectually-impressive and economically-valuable works under a poorly-established legal subelement is antithetical to copyright law’s history and to Congress’s constitutional mandate to “promote . . . [the] useful [a]rts . . . .” It leaves creators who …

University Business Students As Charity Trustees: A Win-Win For All?, Carl Evans, Nigel Jackson
Plymouth Business School
Charities are facing a crisis in recruiting board trustees. Additionally, boards have been criticised for lacking diversity and being unrepresentative of society. The purpose of this paper is to propose a solution to the problem of trustee recruitment, by considering university business students as trustees. Through an analysis of advertised trustee jobs, the proposal is evaluated against degree subject benchmark statements. The findings identify some key person characteristics specified by charities when recruiting trustees. The generic criteria could be met by most students and many of the personal skills are developed by students while at university. However, to address some …

Cardiac Arrest occurs outside of the hospital setting more than you think. According to MyCares.net, 15% of OHCA happened in a public setting in 2020. Even if you are a trained healthcare professional, it may not be accessible at times in these situations due to different factors such as equipment availability, trained assistance, etc... Having an alternative option to conventional mouth-to-mouth rescue breath CPR would encourage trained and untrained bystanders to perform life-saving interventions to patients until local EMS responders can arrive. The covid pandemic affected everyone inside and outside the medical world. The general population got a real …

Jun Upregulation Drives Aberrant Transposable Element Mobilization, Associated Innate Immune Response, And Impaired Neurogenesis In Alzheimer’S Disease, Chiara Scopa, Samantha Barnada, Maria Cicardi, Mo Singer, Davide Trotti, Marco Trizzino
Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers
Adult neurogenic decline, inflammation, and neurodegeneration are phenotypic hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Mobilization of transposable elements (TEs) in heterochromatic regions was recently reported in AD, but the underlying mechanisms are still underappreciated. Combining functional genomics with the differentiation of familial and sporadic AD patient derived-iPSCs into hippocampal progenitors, CA3 neurons, and cerebral organoids, we found that the upregulation of the AP-1 subunit, c-Jun, triggers decondensation of genomic regions containing TEs. This leads to the cytoplasmic accumulation of HERVK-derived RNA-DNA hybrids, the activation of the cGAS-STING cascade, and increased levels of cleaved caspase-3, suggesting the initiation of programmed cell death …

Empowering New Ob Nurses To Combat Racial Disparities Through Education, Tabitha Poole
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Minority patients are experiencing maternal morbidity and mortality at rates three to four times higher than white patients in America (Valerio et al., 2023). The project aims to measure the impact of anti-racism training on new OB nurses' understanding of racial disparities and their impact on maternal health outcomes. A three-hour educational course, in alignment with evidence-based practices, was provided to the participants. Utilizing a Likert Scale, pre- and post-intervention assessments were administered via Microsoft Forms to measure participants' perception of knowledge of implicit bias and structural racism. Gender, age range, and race/ethnicity were also collected to allow for further …

Identifying The Drivers Of Pollen Limitation In Apples (Malus Domestica) Within The Urban Orchards Of St. Louis, Mo, Jordan Hathaway
Theses
The human population is projected to continue growing throughout the remainder of the 21st century. Thus, agricultural production will need to increase drastically in order to ensure global food security. Management strategies aimed at enhancing crop pollination by promoting pollinator diversity have shown potential as an environmentally sustainable method of increasing yields. Optimizing the design and implementation of these strategies will require us to expand our understanding of the processes which influence crop pollen limitation. In this study, we examined pollen limitation in self-incompatible apple trees (Malus domestica) within urban orchards located in St. Louis, MO. In our first field …
