Canada’S Cultural Property Export Controls: An Analysis Of The Colonial And Heritage Discourses That Animate The Cultural Property Export And Import Act, Madeline Anne Davis Dec 2023

Canada’S Cultural Property Export Controls: An Analysis Of The Colonial And Heritage Discourses That Animate The Cultural Property Export And Import Act, Madeline Anne Davis

LLM Theses

This thesis critiques Canada’s Cultural Property Export and Import Act (CPEIA) and its framing as a legal instrument intended to protect and preserve Canada’s cultural heritage. It focuses on the export provisions of the Act and the related experts and administrative bodies who oversee disputes under those provisions. I argue that colonial and capitalist heritage and property discourses are the foundation that underpins the CPEIA and as a result, the legislation both expressly and implicitly privileges colonial and capitalist ideas about heritage and property ownership. The legislation, on its face and through the limited examples of available application, leaves little …

Superhyperfunction, Superhyperstructure, Neutrosophic Superhyperfunction And Neutrosophic Superhyperstructure: Current Understanding And Future Directions, Florentin Smarandache Dec 2023

Superhyperfunction, Superhyperstructure, Neutrosophic Superhyperfunction And Neutrosophic Superhyperstructure: Current Understanding And Future Directions, Florentin Smarandache

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

The n-th PowerSet of a Set {or Pn(S)} better describes our real world, because a system S (which may be a company, institution, association, country, society, set of objects/plants/animals/beings, set of concepts/ideas/propositions, etc.) is formed by sub-systems, which in their turn by sub-sub-systems, and so on. We prove that the SuperHyperFunction is a generalization of classical Function, SuperFunction, and HyperFunction. And the SuperHyperAlgebra, SuperHyperGraph are part of the SuperHyperStructure. Almost all structures in our real world are Neutrosophic SuperHyperStructures since they have indeterminate/incomplete/uncertain/conflicting data.

Hating The Haters: Media, Polarisation And Class Conflict’ Media, Emotion, Society And Security Lightning Talks In Response To Dublin Riots, Edward Brennan Dec 2023

Hating The Haters: Media, Polarisation And Class Conflict’ Media, Emotion, Society And Security Lightning Talks In Response To Dublin Riots, Edward Brennan

Conference Papers

This 5-minute ‘lightning talk’ considered public and media responses to the Dublin riots of 2023, highlighting how hatred towards far-right agitators and rioters permeated not only social media discourse but also broadsheet journalism and government statements. Using Fintan O’Toole’s commentary as a key example, Brennan critiques the moral framing that legitimises hatred against “the haters,” suggesting it mirrors a pre-democratic cultural logic wherein ideas are seen as autonomous, malevolent forces shaping society. This ‘secular superstition’ constitutes an anti-sociology that erases economic and class contexts, replacing them with aesthetic politics rooted in identity, branding and lifestyle logics. The paper warns that …

Sex hormones exert a wide influence on several systems of the human body, especially in women, who undergo intense changes in the trans and postmenopausal periods. Different experimental models are used to mimic these conditions; however, the impact on hormonal profile may be different. This study aimed to analyze and compare vaginal cytology of different post-estropausal mice models, along with their microscopical ovarian features. Forty-six C57BL/6J female mice with the ages of 4, 6 and 18 months at the beginning of the experiment, weighing about 25–28 grams, constituted five groups: NC–(negative control) animals with no treatment, OVX-SHAM—sham ovariectomized, OVX–ovariectomized, VCD–medicated …

Modeling X-Linked Dystonia Parkinsonism (Xdp) In Patient-Derived Medium Spiny Neurons, Shivani Aryal

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism (XDP) is an adult-onset neurodegenerative disorder that results in the loss of striatal medium spiny neurons (MSNs). XDP is an X-linked disorder caused by disease-specific mutations around the TAF1 gene. This thesis highlights the utility of directly reprogrammed MSNs from fibroblasts of affected XDP as a platform that captures cellular and epigenetic phenotypes associated with XDP neurodegeneration. In addition, this thesis demonstrates the neuroprotective effect of SAK3 currently tested in other neurodegenerative diseases. XDP fibroblasts from three independent patients as well as age- and sex-matched control fibroblasts were used to generate MSNs using miRNA-9/9*-124 and the transcription factors …

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

The incursion of water hyacinth, Pontederia crassipes in Lake Okeechobee has resulted in management systems to be implemented to reduce the coverage of the invasive macrophyte. Its residence in the Lake Okeechobee ecosystem and the effects it has on organisms in the lake, whether it be positive or harmful is unknown. This study attempted to assess the potential effects that water hyacinth has on aquatic biota in Lake Okeechobee. Biotic data were collected on open water, water hyacinth covered, and native vegetation covered habitats via hook-and-line fishing, electrofishing, baited minnow traps, and the sampling of plant roots over a thirteen-month …

Comparison Of Molecular Methods For Absolute Quantification Of Low-Abundant Bacterial Communities In Milk, Carmina Chavez, Janet E. Williams, Michelle K. Mcguire, Mark A. Mcguire Dec 2023

Comparison Of Molecular Methods For Absolute Quantification Of Low-Abundant Bacterial Communities In Milk, Carmina Chavez, Janet E. Williams, Michelle K. Mcguire, Mark A. Mcguire

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Milk was historically thought to be generally sterile. However, use of culture-dependent and culture-independent methods has provided strong evidence that milk has a microbiome (Figure 1). Culture-independent methods (e.g., high-throughput sequencing) have demonstrated the diversity of microbes in milk but provide relative abundance data. Culture-dependent methods have indicated microbial communities in milk are of low abundance, but it is challenging to measure absolute quantities accurately. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) has been used to quantify bacterial taxa in milk, However, concentrations often fall below the detection limit (Figure 2 & 3). Digital droplet PCR (ddPCR) allows detection of low-abundant …

An Assessment Of Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda L.) Mortality And The Impact Of Habitat Fragmentation On Southern Pine Beetle (Dendroctonus Frontalis Zimmerman) Infestation In Mississippi, Usa, Damilola M. Taiwo

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis has two data chapters that consider factors affecting loblolly pine health in localized regions of Mississippi. The first data chapter investigated the abiotic and biotic factors contributing to loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) mortality on private timberland in Mississippi. This assessment considered temperature and precipitation variations, bark beetle populations, foliar and root pathogen tests, and drone survey. The results revealed that the loblolly pine mortality resulted from combination of factors. The second data chapter examined the impact of habitat fragmentation on southern pine beetle (SPB; Dendroctonus frontalis) infestation in Homochitto National Forest (HNF). This was assessed through remote sensing …

Pathogenicity Of Acinetobacter Calcoaceticus, Kaitlan A. Sullivan Dec 2023

Pathogenicity Of Acinetobacter Calcoaceticus, Kaitlan A. Sullivan

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Acinetobacter is a genus of gram-negative bacteria that have been appearing frequently in hospitals contributing to infections in the blood, lungs, urinary tract, and other parts of the body. It infects patients with weakened immune systems that are placed on ventilators, after the use of catheters, or have any other open wounds produced by prolonged hospital stays. This genus of bacteria is problematic due to its high probability of becoming resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics. Thus, we are determining the pathogenicity of clinical isolates of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus using the organism Caenorhabditis elegans as a model.

We are testing …

Time To Heal: Trauma's Impact On Rape & Sexual Assault Statutes Of Limitations, Jillian Miller Purdue, Fredrick E. Vars Dec 2023

Time To Heal: Trauma's Impact On Rape & Sexual Assault Statutes Of Limitations, Jillian Miller Purdue, Fredrick E. Vars

Texas A&M Law Review

Short statutes of limitations for sex crimes ask the impossible of many victims: report the crime before they have recovered from the trauma. Perpetrators go free as a direct result of the injury they caused. Nearly a third of victims of rape and sexual assault have PTSD during their lifetimes. PTSD is associated with three symptoms pertinent to reporting a crime: avoidance coping (avoiding distressing thoughts, feelings, or reminders of the attack), dissociative amnesia (forgetting important or all aspects of the attack), and depression. These symptoms all affect a victim’s psychological ability to report a crime before a short statute …

Redefining "Beneficial Use" To Combat Water Scarcity, Genene Adams Dec 2023

Redefining "Beneficial Use" To Combat Water Scarcity, Genene Adams

Texas A&M Law Review

Many western states in the U.S. are experiencing severe or exceptional drought, where water shortages are common, widespread, and have created troubling emergency conditions. How long these droughts plaguing the West will last is unknown. What is evident, however, is water use under a wellestablished doctrine must change in order to ensure communities do not run out of water. As a decades-long drought persists, frequent higher-than-average temperatures linger due to climate change, and population growth skyrockets, the need to implement a narrower standard for water use in the West is critical.

The purpose of this Comment is to propose an …

Once Upon A Time, Again: Exploring The Function Of Fairy Tale Retellings, Mackenzie A. Parsons Dec 2023

Once Upon A Time, Again: Exploring The Function Of Fairy Tale Retellings, Mackenzie A. Parsons

Theses and Dissertations

With the invention of the printing press, fairy tales became limited by the idea of an "original" (Pettitt, 2009; Blamires, 2003). However, in the past century, the retelling and changing of fairy tales has become incredibly popular in all forms of media, such as print, film, ballet, musicals, etc. Despite Western populations' familiarity with these tales, the demand for such retellings continues to rise, with the storytellers finding great financial success with each "new" version they provide. Researchers have many varying opinions on the reasons for such intense responses to retold fairy tales, but there is a gap of research …

Disruption of epithelial barriers is a common disease manifestation in chronic degenerative diseases of the airways, lung, and intestine. Extensive human genetic studies have identified risk loci in such diseases, including in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and inflammatory bowel diseases. The genes associated with these loci have not fully been determined, and functional characterization of such genes requires extensive studies in model organisms. Here, we report the results of a screen in

Some Special Refined Neutrosophic Ideals In Refined Neutrosophic Rings: A Proof-Of-Concept Study, Murhaf Riad Alabdullah

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

In this research, we created notions of a refined neutrosophic prime (completely prime, semiprime, and completely semiprime) ideal in a refined neutrosophic ring. If R(I1, I2) is a refined neutrosophic ring, then each ideal of R(I1, I2) has the form J+KI1+LI2 are ideals of the classical ring R. The objective of this work is to find the necessary and sufficient condition on classical ideals J, L and K that makes J+KI1+LI2 a prime (completely prime, semiprime, and completely semiprime) ideal in R(I1, I2). We studied some of the elementary properties of these concepts and the most important properties that link …

Ncmpy: A Modelling Software For Neutrosophic Cognitive Maps Based On Python Package, Ilanthenral Kandasamy, Divakar Arumugam, Aryan Rathore, Ateeth Arun, Manan Jain, Vasantha .W.B, Florentin Smarandache

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Cognitive maps are a vital tool that can be used for knowledge representation and reasoning. Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) are popular soft computing techniques used to model large and complex systems, and they can aid in explainable artificial intelligence (AI). FCMs, however, cannot model the indeterminacy that arises in a system due to various uncertainties. Neutrosophic Cognitive Maps (NCMs), upgraded FCMs that could model indeterminacy, were introduced to address this issue. NCMs are a generalization of FCMs, a field of cognitive science firmly based on neural networks. NCMs have been used to solve a wide range of problems. NCMs were …

A Genetic Screen For Metabolic Modulators In Drosophila Melanogaster, Victoria Campos, Logan Kazimer, Brandon Polimeni, Katelyn Niswonger, Matthew Meiselman

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

When environments become unfavorable, to preserve energy, animals will attenuate reproduction and limit growth. This evolutionary strategy requires perceiving and assessing a complex environment, a long-standing role of the nervous system. However, the nervous system’s control over endocrine states remains a monumental challenge. Here, we propose to exploit the genetic accessibility and cellular resolution readily found in Drosophila melanogaster, to fully explore how the brain controls metabolic and reproductive states. This project relies on the Meiselman Lab’s established unbiased neural activation screen, which located new neural circuits that participate in metabolic control. The project proposes the use of the split …

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

This study used survivorship pop-up archival tags (sPAT) tags to determine the post-release survival and habitat use from twenty-four undersized swordfish captured in the northwest Atlantic Ocean during normal operation within the commercial U.S pelagic longline industry. From these deployments, sixteen tags were used to determine post-release survival, and eight of the surviving tags were used to analyze short-term habitat utilization. Mortality was estimated to be 43.8% and was not significantly affected by variables such as fish size, latitude caught, or horizontal distance traveled. The relatively high mortality, in combination with the high at-haulback mortality reported in previous studies, does …

A Phenotypically Robust Model Of Spinal And Bulbar Muscular Atrophy In Drosophila, Kristin Richardson, Medha Sengupta, Alyson Sujkowski, Kozeta Libohova, Autumn C. Harris, Robert Wessells, Diane E. Merry, Sokol V. Todi Dec 2023

A Phenotypically Robust Model Of Spinal And Bulbar Muscular Atrophy In Drosophila, Kristin Richardson, Medha Sengupta, Alyson Sujkowski, Kozeta Libohova, Autumn C. Harris, Robert Wessells, Diane E. Merry, Sokol V. Todi

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is an X-linked disorder that affects males who inherit the androgen receptor (AR) gene with an abnormal CAG triplet repeat expansion. The resulting protein contains an elongated polyglutamine (polyQ) tract and causes motor neuron degeneration in an androgen-dependent manner. The precise molecular sequelae of SBMA are unclear. To assist with its investigation and the identification of therapeutic options, we report here a new model of SBMA in Drosophila melanogaster. We generated transgenic flies that express the full-length, human AR with a wild-type or pathogenic polyQ repeat. Each transgene is inserted into the same safe …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

The concepts of open sets, closed sets, the interior of a set, and the exterior of a set are the most basic concepts in the study of topological spaces in any setting. When we turn our attention to the concept of anti-topological spaces, we encounter analogous fundamental concepts, such as the definition of anti-open sets, anti-closed sets, anti-interior, anti-exterior, etc. These concepts have already been introduced and studied by mathematicians worldwide. In this article, we introduce and study the concepts of b-anti-open set, b-anti-closed set, anti-b-interior, and anti-b-closure in the context of anti-topological spaces and investigate some of their basic …
