A Problem At Any Age: A Case Report Of Congenital Malrotation With Bowel Ischemia In An 84-Year-Old, Marisa E. Schwab, Sage P. Kramer, Aya Bashi, Taehyun P. Chung, Claudia M. Mueller
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: Malrotation with bowel ischemia is classically thought of as a disease of infants. However, the true prevalence of malrotation in both the pediatric and adult population is unknown due to the unclear number of asymptomatic patients. Case presentation: A previously healthy 84-year-old man with no prior abdominal surgeries presented with an acute abdomen and was found on CT to have small bowel located in the right hemiabdomen and an abnormal SMA-SMV relationship suggestive of intestinal malrotation, as well as pneumatosis intestinalis. He underwent an exploratory laparotomy, where he was found to have a paraduodenal space which did not contain …

Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) is a major determinant of morbidity and mortality following lung transplantation. Delineating basic mechanisms and molecular signatures of PGD remain a fundamental challenge. This pilot study examines if the pulmonary volatile organic compound (VOC) spectrum relate to PGD and postoperative outcomes. The VOC profiles of 58 bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and blind bronchial aspirate samples from 35 transplant patients were extracted using solid-phase-microextraction and analyzed with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The support vector machine algorithm was used to identify VOCs that could differentiate patients with severe from lower grade PGD. Using …
Evolution Of The Repression Mechanisms In Circadian Clocks, Jonathan Tyler, Yining Lu, Jay Dunlap, Daniel B. Forger
Evolution Of The Repression Mechanisms In Circadian Clocks, Jonathan Tyler, Yining Lu, Jay Dunlap, Daniel B. Forger
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: Circadian (daily) timekeeping is essential to the survival of many organisms. An integral part of all circadian timekeeping systems is negative feedback between an activator and repressor. However, the role of this feedback varies widely between lower and higher organisms. Results: Here, we study repression mechanisms in the cyanobacterial and eukaryotic clocks through mathematical modeling and systems analysis. We find a common mathematical model that describes the mechanism by which organisms generate rhythms; however, transcription’s role in this has diverged. In cyanobacteria, protein sequestration and phosphorylation generate and regulate rhythms while transcription regulation keeps proteins in proper stoichiometric balance. …

Association Between Chiropractic Care And Use Of Prescription Opioids Among Older Medicare Beneficiaries With Spinal Pain: A Retrospective Observational Study, James M. Whedon, Sarah Uptmor, Andrew W.J. Toler, Serena Bezdjian, Todd A. Mackenzie, Louis A. Kazal
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: The burden of spinal pain can be aggravated by the hazards of opioid analgesics, which are still widely prescribed for spinal pain despite evidence-based clinical guidelines that identify non-pharmacological therapies as the preferred first-line approach. Previous studies have found that chiropractic care is associated with decreased use of opioids, but have not focused on older Medicare beneficiaries, a vulnerable population with high rates of co-morbidity and polypharmacy. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the association between chiropractic utilization and use of prescription opioids among older adults with spinal pain. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study in …

Work And Family Pathways And Their Associations With Health For Young Women In Korea, Yujin Kim, Hyeyoung Woo, Sinn Won Han
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The aim of this study is two-fold: to discern patterns in pathways of work and family transitions among young women (aged 24–39 years) whose decisions and behaviors toward labor force participation, marriage, and parenthood are considerably shaped by social constraints and gender norms; and to examine whether and to what extent work and family pathways are associated with later health. Using data from a longitudinal survey based on a large sample of adult women in Korea (N = 2418), we identified eight dominant pathways of employment, marriage, and parenthood among young women and found that educational attainment and family values …

TREC Final Reports
The transit industry is rapidly transitioning to battery-electric fleets because of the direct environmental and financial benefits they could offer, such as zero emissions, less noise, and lower maintenance costs. Yet the unique spatiotemporal characteristics associated with transit system charging requirements, as well as various objectives when prioritizing the fleet electrification, requires the system operators and/or decision-makers to fully understand the status of the transit system and energy/power system in order to make informed deployment decisions. A recently completed NITC project, No. 1222 titled An Electric Bus Deployment Framework for Improved Air Quality and Transit Operational Efficiency, developed a bi-objective …

Religion And Spirituality As A Coping Mechanism For Racial Microaggressions: A Literature Review, Ashia Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Racial discrimination is still very prevalent in the United States. People of color continue to face racism despite efforts to eradicate it. Sometimes it comes in a more subtle form known as a microaggression which can be an everyday occurrence for many people (Lewis & Neville, 2015). This is a unique stressor in that it targets an aspect of an individual that cannot be changed, and it requires the individual to decide to either confront their offender or handle it in a different manner. The goal of this paper is to perform a literature review to investigate if African Americans …

The 1970s were a period of political and social turmoil. Many women left the domestic sphere and entered public life to work, seek higher education, and pursue a career. Yet many factors worked against them. They entered a workforce that treated them poorly or went to a university with limited degrees for women. The seventies were also a time of social, cultural, and political upheaval marked by a deep recession in which quality jobs were harder to find and layoffs were common. This oral history project seeks to document the experiences of East Texan women during this tumultuous period. And …
The Cost Of Survival For Insulin-Dependent Diabetics, Nikol Nesterenko
The Cost Of Survival For Insulin-Dependent Diabetics, Nikol Nesterenko
UC Law Journal
Insulin, an injectable drug discovered about 100 years ago that now costs less than $5 to manufacture, is currently sold between $300 and $500 in the United States. The continuously growing price forces many insulin-dependent diabetics to forego their lifesaving medication, which can result in death. Although insulin manufacturers are a significant cause of insulin unaffordability in this country, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), such as CVS Caremark, OptumRx, and Express Scripts, are essential in the insulin market and pressure insulin manufacturers to provide higher rebates, leading to higher prices for consumers.

Intersectionality Pertaining To The Disproportionate Rates Of Black Women In Prisons And Jails, Mackenzie Heller
Intersectionality Pertaining To The Disproportionate Rates Of Black Women In Prisons And Jails, Mackenzie Heller
University Honors Theses
The incarceration rates of Black women in America surpass even all other demographics. Yet, Black women are often not on the news when discussing prison rates in the United States. Rather we see Black men, Hispanic men, and so forth. While these people do make up large portions of the prison system they are seeing a decline in their incarceration rates. Black women are often pushed to the sidelines when discussing matters that can be seen as central to their livelihoods.
This thesis addresses the intersectionality that only Black women experience and how that affects their imprisonment rates and experiences …
