Appraising Rufaidah Al-Aslamia, First Muslim Nurse And Pioneer Of Islamic Nursing: Contributions And Legacy, Mustafa M. Bodrick, Mutlaq B. Almutairi, Fatma S. Alsolamy, Hisham M. Alfayyadh

Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia

Global advancement in nursing is attributed mainly to western pioneers with negligible recognition of Rufaidah Al- Aslamia, who was the first Muslim nurse, and pioneer in Islamic nursing more than 1,400 years ago in Madinah (Medina, Saudi Arabia). She responded to the need for the provision of organized nursing care to injured soldiers in the Islamic battles during the time of Prophet Mohammed (Peace & Blessings Upon Him). The paucity of focus on Rufaidah Al-Aslamia triggered this scientific study to appraise her contributions and legacy as the pioneer of Islamic nursing. A qualitative, historical research inquiry was conducted using a …

Hospital-Acquired Malnutrition In The Pediatric Population: A Cross-Sectional Study, Annida Falahaini, Dessie Wanda

Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia

Malnutrition is a global problem, from which hospitalized patients are not exempt. Hospital-acquired malnutrition (HaM) is associated with adverse outcomes in pediatric patients. Therefore, health professionals need to understand the factors related to the issue in such patients. This study aims to identify the factors associated with the prevalence of HaM in pediatric patients. It employed a cross-sectional design involving children from one month to 18 years old who had been hospitalized for at least 72 hours. HaM was determined by a weight loss of more than 2% by the fourth day of hospitalization. The final sample was 373, from …

The Book Of Revelation In Nafe (Kwamera): William Watt’S Translations And Loanwords, Lamont Lindstrom

Pacific Studies

William Watt, Presbyterian missionary on Tanna (1869–1910), published a Nafe (Kwamera) language translation of the KJV New Testament in 1890. He had earlier produced Kwamera versions of the Gospels as soon as linguistic skills permitted, but the full New Testament translation was not completed until the late 1880s and printed in Glasgow during a mission leave (1889–1890). Watt worked with island pundits, and he relied on his wife Agnes’s linguistic expertise. Revelation’s allusions and obscurities presented significant difficulties of translation. I offer a close reading of Watt’s translated book of Revelation—Nari Kenamsasani (sasani means “display”)—tracking his grammatical choices, his …

“Chinese Pacificism?” Exploring Chinese News Media Representations Of Pacific Island Countries, Shuo Luan Dec 2022

“Chinese Pacificism?” Exploring Chinese News Media Representations Of Pacific Island Countries, Shuo Luan

Pacific Studies

China has ramped up its engagement with Pacific Island countries and established itself as a major cooperative partner and assistance provider. However, the Pacific Islands remain a blind spot for many Chinese people, whose perceptions of island countries are inevitably shaped by dominant discourses at home. Although island countries are aware of China’s growing presence, they are largely uninformed about their images circulated in China. This article seeks to fill this gap by exploring Chinese news media representations of Pacific Island countries. It argues that Chinese news media paint a broad and superficial portrait of island countries because of the …

Crafting A Different Kind Of Story: Experiences Of Creative Writers Leading In Higher Education, Meredith L. Dodson Dec 2022

Crafting A Different Kind Of Story: Experiences Of Creative Writers Leading In Higher Education, Meredith L. Dodson

Dissertations

Connections between creativity and leadership often focus on how fostering creativity can help an organization. Despite the value that creativity can bring to organizations, Mueller et al. (2011) found that creative people themselves are not seen as leadership material. Yet many people with creative backgrounds do take on leadership roles, particularly in higher education.

This qualitative study explores the experiences of higher education leaders who have a background in creative writing and how those leaders perceive the interaction of the leadership role with their creative experience. The sample included 12 mid-level leaders in higher education who had an MFA or …

Clinical Lab Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: In 2019, the American Thoracic Society and Infectious Diseases Society of America updated clinical practice guidelines for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). In contrast to guidelines published in 2007, macrolide monotherapy for outpatients was made a conditional recommendation based on resistance levels. Local knowledge of current antimicrobial susceptibility is needed to guide management of CAP and other bacterial respiratory pathogens. The purpose of this study was to investigate antimicrobial susceptibility profiles and trending for Wisconsin Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates.

Design: Multi-center laboratory surveillance, with testing at a central location utilizing standardized susceptibility testing protocols.

Methods: Data published by the Wisconsin Department of …

Experiences Of Mothers And Significant Others In Accessing Comprehensive Healthcare In The First 1000 Days Of Life Post-Conception During Covid-19 In Rural Uganda, Grace Nakate, Sean Mackay, Eunice Ndirangu, Valerie Fleming

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: COVID-19 presented an unprecedented global public health challenge because of its rapid and relentless spread, and many countries instituted lockdowns to prevent the spread of infection. Although this strategy mayhave been appropriate to reduce infection, it presented unintended difficulties in rural Uganda, especially in maternal and born newborn care. For example, some services were suspended, meaning the nearest health facility was at a considerable distance. This study explored the experiences of mothers and their significant others of comprehensive care in the first 1000 days of life post-conception during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bunghokho-Mutoto sub-county, Mbale District, Uganda.

Comparative Genomics Of Five Valsa Species Gives Insights On Their Pathogenicity Evolution, Guangchao Sun, Shichang Xie, Lin Tang, Chao Zhao, Mian Zhang, Lili Huang Dec 2022

Comparative Genomics Of Five Valsa Species Gives Insights On Their Pathogenicity Evolution, Guangchao Sun, Shichang Xie, Lin Tang, Chao Zhao, Mian Zhang, Lili Huang

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Valsa is a genus of ascomycetes within the Valsaceae family. This family includes many wood destructive pathogens such as the well known Valsa mali and Valsa pyri which cause canker diseases in fruit trees and threaten the global fruit production. Lack of genomic information of this family is impeding our understandings about their evolution and genetic basis of their pathogenicity divergence. Here, we report genome assemblies of Valsa malicola, Valsa persoonii, and Valsa sordida which represent close relatives of Valsa mali and Valsa pyri with different host preferences. Comparative genomics analysis revealed that segmental rearrangements, inversions, and translocations …

Does Social Pension Buy Improved Mental Health And Mortality Outcomes For Senior Citizens? Evidence From South Africa's 2008 Pension Reform, Cyprian Mostert, Diana Mackay, Alex Awiti, Manasi Kumar, Zul Merali Dec 2022

Does Social Pension Buy Improved Mental Health And Mortality Outcomes For Senior Citizens? Evidence From South Africa's 2008 Pension Reform, Cyprian Mostert, Diana Mackay, Alex Awiti, Manasi Kumar, Zul Merali

Brain and Mind Institute

In South Africa, men were traditionally eligible to receive government pensions at 65 years. However, that eligibility criterion was changed in 2008 to allow men to receive a pension payout at 60 years. This study is designed to quantify the impact of the 2008 pension reform on mental health outcomes (depression and traumatic stress) and deaths among 60-year-old men from disadvantaged households without advanced education. This analysis used secondary data issued by Statistic South Africa- General Household Survey. Men who reported earning a pension at 60 years from 2008 to 2014 were exposed to the 2008 pension reform and thus …

Brain and Mind Institute

Background: Peripartum adolescents experience signifcant interpersonal transitions in their lives. Depression and emotional distress are often exacerbated by adolescents’ responses to these interpersonal changes. Improved understanding of pregnancy-related social changes and maladaptive responses to these shifts may inform novel approaches to addressing the mental health needs of adolescents during the perinatal period. The paper aims to understand the sources of psychological distress in peripartum adolescents and map these to Interpersonal Psychotherapy’s (IPT) problem areas as a framework to understand depression.

Method: We conducted interviews in two Nairobi primary care clinics with peripartum adolescents ages 16–18 years (n=23) with …

Introduction: There is paucity of culturally adapted tools for assessing depression and anxiety in children and adolescents in low-and middle-income countries. This hinders early detection, provision of appropriate and culturally acceptable interventions. In a partnership with the University of Nairobi, Nairobi County, Kenyatta National Hospital, and UNICEF, a rapid cultural adaptation of three adolescent mental health scales was done, i.e., Revised Children’s Anxiety and Depression Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and additional scales in the UNICEF mental health module for adolescents.

Materials and methods: Using a qualitative approach, we explored adolescent participants’ views on cultural acceptability, comprehensibility, relevance, and completeness of …
